How to become a remote legal assistant from Nigeria
You do not need a law degree to become a remote legal assistant for a US firm. Most ads ask for excellent English, strong organisation, some admin or client service experience and comfort with case management software. Experience in a Nigerian chambers or company legal department helps, but a good virtual assistant or customer service record can be enough to start.
The trade-off is the hours. US firms want you during their office day, which means afternoons and late evenings in Lagos, and some roles involve a lot of phone work with clients. If you can handle that, legal assisting is one of the more accessible remote legal jobs, and a common first step towards paralegal work.

What a remote legal assistant does
A remote legal assistant is often the first person a client speaks to. You take the intake call or form, collect the facts and documents the attorney needs, open the matter in the firm's system and book the consultation. After that, you keep the client informed, chase missing documents and make sure nothing sits unanswered.
The rest is office management for lawyers you never meet in person. You manage calendars and court dates, file and name documents properly in Clio or MyCase, prepare standard letters and forms from templates, save email attachments to the right matter, and sometimes e-file documents the attorney has signed. In family law firms, one 2026 ad mentioned electronic filing with Oregon and Washington courts.
The difference from a paralegal is depth. A paralegal drafts substantive documents and manages a caseload; a legal assistant supports the process around them. In small firms the line blurs.
A day in the role
- Answer new client enquiries by phone and web form, and complete intake notes for the attorney
- Book consultations, hearings and deadlines into the shared calendar and send confirmations
- Save the morning's email attachments to the correct matters in Clio with consistent file names
- Prepare engagement letters and standard court forms from templates for attorney review
- Call clients to collect missing documents, such as pay slips or medical bills
- E-file signed documents and save the court's confirmation to the file
- Send the attorney an end-of-day note listing what is done, what is waiting and what needs them
Skills you need
Core skills
- Client intake
Firms win or lose clients at the first call. You need to collect the right facts politely and quickly.
- Calendar and deadline management
Hearings, consultations and filing dates all run through you. Missed dates hurt clients.
- Document management
Ads ask for strong data entry and document skills. A file the attorney can navigate without asking is the standard.
- Practice management software
Clio and MyCase are named in remote legal assistant ads, alongside Dropbox and Microsoft 365.
- Professional phone manner
Several roles list phone etiquette as a key skill; you speak to clients, courts and insurers on a US number.
- Template drafting
Letters, forms and simple pleadings from the firm's templates, with names, dates and figures correct.
- Fast, accurate typing
Intake notes, emails and documents all depend on it.
Soft skills
- Discretion
Family law, immigration and injury clients share deeply personal information.
- Empathy without promises
Clients are often stressed. You reassure them without telling them how their case will end.
- Asking when unsure
One ad listed "ability to take direction and ask questions when needed" as a requirement. Guessing in a law firm is expensive.

Getting hired from Nigeria
US legal staffing companies are the main route. Job Duck, for example, advertised several legal assistant roles in October 2026 open to candidates from all countries, from family law to personal injury, with experience preferred but often not required. Some needed Spanish or Portuguese; many did not. Nigerian companies that supply foreign firms, such as Outcess, also post remote legal assistant roles restricted to Nigeria, asking for a related degree and two years as a legal virtual assistant.
Your CV should show organisation and client handling. If you have worked in a Nigerian chambers, list what you managed: "Maintained diary for three counsel and 80 active matters; prepared processes for filing at the High Court". If you come from customer service, show call volumes and satisfaction scores.
Prepare your setup before you apply. Expect questions about a quiet room, headset, internet speed and backup power. For US Eastern roles, 8:30am to 5:30pm is 2:30pm to 11:30pm in Lagos in winter and 1:30pm to 10:30pm in summer. Pacific roles finish around 1am or 2am Lagos time.
You will usually be paid monthly in dollars through the staffing company. Ask which platform they use and whether US public holidays are paid.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Answering clients' legal questions yourself. Take a message for the attorney every time.
- Accepting a Pacific time role without planning your sleep, power and family time around it.
- Sloppy file naming. Attorneys judge you on whether they can find a document in seconds.
- Applying to bilingual roles when you do not speak the language well. It shows in the first call.
- Paying anyone for a "placement". Legitimate staffing companies do not charge candidates.
Questions people ask
Can I become a remote legal assistant without a law degree?
Yes. Most remote legal assistant ads we saw in 2026 did not require a law degree; they asked for strong English, organisation, and preferably some legal or admin experience.
What is the difference between a legal assistant and a paralegal?
A legal assistant handles the administration of cases: intake, scheduling, documents and client contact. A paralegal does more substantive legal work, such as drafting discovery or building settlement demands, under an attorney's supervision.
How much does a remote legal assistant earn from Nigeria?
Remote legal assistant roles open to all countries were advertised at $1,150 to $1,220 a month in October 2026, about $13,800 to $14,640 a year. Our legal assistant salary page has the sources and benchmarks.
Do US firms hire Nigerians as legal assistants?
Yes, directly and through staffing companies, as long as you can work US hours and communicate clearly. Some roles prefer Spanish speakers, but English-only roles exist.
What equipment do I need?
A reliable laptop, a noise-cancelling headset, a quiet room, power backup that lasts into the night, and two internet connections on different networks.

- Paralegal
A paralegal does legal work under a lawyer's supervision: drafting documents, managing case files and deadlines, preparing filings and handling discovery or records. US law firms hire remote paralegals from Nigeria and other countries, mostly in litigation, personal injury and immigration, but you work under US attorneys and cannot give legal advice, even if you are called to the Nigerian Bar.
- Executive Assistant
An executive assistant is the right hand of one founder or senior leader, managing their calendar, inbox, travel, meetings and follow-ups with a high level of trust. Remote EA roles are open to Nigerians, mostly at $12,000 to $18,000 a year in 2026 ads, and they usually want a year or more of assistant experience first.
- Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant runs a client's admin from a distance: inbox, calendar, bookings, CRM updates, simple graphics and follow-ups. It is one of the most realistic remote jobs to land from Nigeria without a degree, but honest starting pay in 2026 agency ads is $6 to $7 an hour.
- Administrative Assistant
An administrative assistant keeps an office's paperwork, records, scheduling and correspondence in order. Remotely, Nigerians usually do this work for US law firms, clinics and small businesses through staffing agencies, under titles like legal assistant, intake specialist or admin coordinator, at roughly $1,060 to $1,220 a month in 2026 ads.
