How to Get a Remote Job After NYSC (or Straight After Graduation)
How to get a remote job after NYSC or straight after graduation: which roles hire fresh graduates, NYSC certificate rules and a service-year plan.

You can get a remote job after NYSC without any formal work experience. To do it, pick one entry-level role that companies abroad hire fresh graduates for, build proof that you can do it, and apply only to vacancies open to people living in Nigeria. Start during your service year, not after passing out.
Most graduates lose months after NYSC by sending the same CV to hundreds of jobs that were never open to Nigeria in the first place. This guide shows you how to avoid that. It covers:
- where your NYSC certificate matters and where it does not
- which remote roles realistically hire fresh graduates
- real graduate programmes accepting worldwide applicants as of October 2026
- a month-by-month plan for your service year
- what to set up at home before your first offer arrives
If you have just graduated and are still waiting for mobilisation, the same plan works. You simply start earlier.
Quick answer
To get a remote job after NYSC, choose one entry-level remote role such as customer support, sales development, virtual assistance or junior software engineering. Build two or three work samples, and write a one-page CV that shows results from school, your PPA and projects. Then apply only to ads marked worldwide, Africa, EMEA or Nigeria. Keep your NYSC certificate, because Nigerian employers must ask for it. Expect the search to take months, and never pay to apply.
Does a remote employer need your NYSC certificate?
It depends on where the employer is hiring you from. For employers in Nigeria, yes. Many foreign employers hiring you as a contractor will not ask, but you should still have the certificate ready.
Section 12 of the NYSC Act says that for employment anywhere in the Federation, every prospective employer must demand and obtain a copy of a graduate's Certificate of National Service or exemption certificate before hiring them. Employers must also show these documents to the police on demand, as Dubawa's fact-check of the NYSC Act quotes. In practice, any Nigerian company hiring you for a remote role, including a Lagos fintech with a fully remote team, will ask for the certificate.
Foreign companies are different. A US or European startup paying you as an independent contractor usually asks for your CV, your degree and sometimes a background check, not an NYSC discharge certificate. A Nigerian employer of record (EOR) or a foreign company with a Nigerian subsidiary may still ask for it. Treat the certificate as a document you will need sooner or later:
- Scan your certificate (or exemption or exclusion letter) and save a PDF copy in two places.
- Keep your statement of result, your degree certificate and a valid international passport with it.
- If your certificate is delayed after passing out, tell recruiters the date you expect it. Do not tell them you have it.
Graduating and waiting for mobilisation
If you have just graduated and are still waiting to be called up, you can start applying right now. Be honest about your timeline. A part-time or contract remote role that fits around your service year is easier to keep than a full-time role with fixed daytime hours.
Graduates under 30 from full-time programmes are expected to serve. Skipping NYSC to take a remote job abroad can close doors later, because Nigerian employers must ask for the certificate, and so can government roles. Exemption (usually for people who graduated at 30 or older) and exclusion (for part-time graduates, among others) are handled through the official NYSC portal. Check your own status there rather than on forums.
Which remote jobs hire fresh graduates from Nigeria?
Roles where companies can train you quickly and measure your output from day one hire fresh graduates most often. Senior-sounding titles such as "product manager" or "data scientist" rarely hire straight out of NYSC.
| Role | Why graduates get hired | What to show |
|---|---|---|
| Customer support | Training is usually provided | Writing samples, typing speed, tool basics |
| Sales development (SDR) | Hiring is based on drive and communication | A mock cold email and call script |
| Virtual or admin assistant | Organisation matters more than a degree | A sample schedule, report or spreadsheet |
| Content moderation or AI data work | Task-based, with test-based hiring | Passing the platform's own tests |
| Junior software engineering | Graduate programmes exist | Personal projects on GitHub |
| Content writing | Samples matter more than a CV | Three published or sample articles |
Each role has its own guide covering skills, tools and cheap ways to learn. Start with the customer support specialist career guide, the sales development representative guide, the virtual assistant guide or the AI data annotator guide. The software engineer guide covers the developer route.
Pick one role. Graduates who apply for customer support on Monday, data analysis on Tuesday and UX design on Wednesday rarely have strong proof for any of them.
Graduate programmes and internships open from Nigeria
A few employers run remote graduate programmes and accept worldwide applicants. They are competitive, but they are real, and they reward the preparation described below. We checked the examples here in October 2026. Open the live ad before applying, because eligibility and openings change.
Canonical graduate roles (home based, worldwide)
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, lists several graduate roles on its Greenhouse careers board with the location "Home based - Worldwide", as of October 2026. Some of its other graduate roles are limited to the Americas, APAC or EMEA, or are office-based in London, so read each location line.
- The Graduate Customer Success Manager ad says the role "will be based remotely worldwide". It targets people who are freshly graduated with little or no work experience.
- The Graduate Sales Development Representative ad is "Home based - Worldwide". It asks for excellent academic results and asks applicants to commit to international travel for company events several times a year.
- The Graduate Software Engineer ad describes "a Globally remote role" for people whose first degree was completed or expected in 2025 or 2026. It wants a STEM degree with programming coursework and personal software projects.
Three details matter for Nigerian applicants:
- Canonical asks about your university result and your secondary school performance in mathematics and your native language, so have your WAEC results and class of degree ready.
- The application forms say that AI-generated or plagiarised answers will disqualify you. Write your answers yourself.
- The roles involve in-person events abroad, so you need a valid international passport and must be able to get visas.
None of the three ads lists a salary. All of them mention an annual learning budget of $2,000.
Outreachy: a paid remote internship for newcomers to open source
Outreachy is a remote, paid internship for people from groups underrepresented in tech. It is open to applicants around the world, students and non-students alike. As of October 2026:
- Pay: the stipend is $7,000 for three months. That is about ₦9,534,000 at WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM, 23 October 2026), before transfer fees and tax.
- Hours and work: interns work 30 hours a week on projects in programming, documentation, design or data science.
- Restrictions: you cannot hold a full-time job or another internship during the internship.
- Dates: applications for the December 2026 round have closed. Initial applications for the May to August cohort usually open in early February.
Outreachy fits a graduate who has finished NYSC, or one whose PPA leaves enough free hours. You can check whether yours does in your PPA arrangements.
Training programmes are not jobs
Nigerian virtual programmes such as the HNG Internship can give you deadlines, team projects and something to point to on a CV. As of October 2026, its site says the programme starts at ₦9,000. It is a training bootcamp, not employment. Treat any programme that charges you as an investment in skills, never as a route to a guaranteed job.
Use your service year as a 12-month runway
The graduates who leave camp with a plan usually start their first remote job sooner after passing out. This timeline assumes a weekday PPA and evenings or weekends for job preparation.
| Months of service | Focus | Output by the end |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Choose one role, read its career guide | A written list of the skills and tools in five real ads |
| 3 to 5 | Learn the core tools and build proof | Two or three work samples |
| 6 to 7 | CV, LinkedIn, portfolio page | One-page CV and a link you can share |
| 8 to 10 | Apply every week, take assessments | A tracker of applications and replies |
| 11 to 12 | Interviews and offers | A start date after passing out |
Make your PPA count
Your place of primary assignment (PPA) is work experience, even if it is a school or a local government office. Write it on your CV like any other job, with numbers where you can:
- "Managed attendance and results records for 240 students in Google Sheets" reads as admin and data skills.
- "Answered parents' enquiries by phone and WhatsApp for the school office" reads as customer support.
- "Built a simple website for the CDS group's health campaign" reads as a portfolio project.
Your community development service (CDS) group can produce similar evidence. Use these examples only if they are true for you. Recruiters ask follow-up questions.
Can you work remotely during NYSC?
Many corps members do part-time remote work during service, but your PPA and NYSC duties come first. A remote job with fixed daytime hours will clash with a weekday PPA. Look at evening shifts for US companies or flexible task-based work instead. Our planned guide to the best remote jobs for NYSC corps members lists roles that fit around service.
Build proof that replaces work experience
A remote employer hiring a fresh graduate is trying to answer one question: will this person do the work without being supervised in person? Your proof should answer that before the interview.
Work samples beat certificates for most entry-level roles. Free courses help you learn, but a hiring manager would rather see one finished piece of work than five course badges.
| Target role | Proof that works |
|---|---|
| Customer support | Three written replies to realistic complaints, and a typing test result |
| SDR | A five-email outreach sequence for a real product |
| Virtual assistant | A sample travel itinerary and a weekly report template |
| Junior developer | One deployed app with a README, on GitHub |
| Content writer | Three samples in the style of the target company's blog |
Example (hypothetical): a fresh graduate's CV summary
"Economics graduate (Second Class Upper, 2025), completed NYSC in October 2026 at a secondary school in Kaduna, where I kept results records for 240 students in Google Sheets. Trained in Zendesk and HubSpot through free courses. Available to work UK or US East Coast hours from Lagos, with inverter and backup internet."
This summary does several things well:
- It mentions the class of degree because some graduate programmes ask for it.
- It describes PPA work in measurable terms.
- It names the tools the candidate has trained in.
- It answers the time-zone and power questions before the employer asks.

Apply only to jobs that are open to Nigeria
Fresh graduates waste the most time on ads they were never eligible for. A company being fully remote does not mean you can work for it from Lagos. Many fully remote ads are open only to people with the right to work in the US, UK or Canada.
Read the location line before the job description:
- "Worldwide", "Anywhere" or "Globally remote": usually open, but read the full ad for exceptions.
- "EMEA" (Europe, Middle East and Africa): often includes Nigeria, but some companies list only certain countries.
- "Africa" or "Nigeria": open to you.
- "US only", "UK only" or "must be authorised to work in…": not open from Nigeria, however entry-level the role is.
Job boards with experience filters help. For example, DailyRemote's Nigeria page tags some listings as entry-level (0 to 2 years). Still open each employer's own ad to confirm. For a fuller method, see the planned guides on what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria and how to verify that a job accepts Nigerian residents.
How many applications a week?
Quality matters more than volume. Ten tailored applications a week, each with a CV adjusted to the ad's wording, usually beat fifty identical ones. Keep a simple tracker with the company, role, date, link and reply. If you have applied to forty roles and got no response, change your CV or your target role before applying to forty more.
Get your home set-up ready before the offer
Remote employers sometimes ask about your set-up at interview. Some ask you to do a short test task on a live call. If you sort these out during service, your offer will not stall later.
- Power: grid supply is unreliable in most areas, so plan for an inverter, a solar kit or at least a generator for working hours.
- Internet: keep two connections, such as a home ISP plus a MiFi, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network. Starlink is available in Nigeria. Check the current price before budgeting for it.
- Laptop: a laptop that can run video calls and several browser tabs without freezing. A phone alone is not enough for most roles.
- Time zones: Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is 6 hours behind Lagos, so a 9am New York start is 3pm in Lagos. London is 1 hour behind Lagos in winter and on the same time in summer.
- Getting paid: foreign employers pay through platforms such as Deel or Remote, or direct to accounts you open through Payoneer, Grey or Wise. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares them.
- Employment status: most first remote jobs with foreign companies are contractor roles, not employee roles. Read contractor vs employee for Nigerians before you sign. Our page on tax for remote workers in Nigeria covers what you owe.
Scams that target fresh graduates
New graduates are a favourite target because scammers know you are eager and short on cash. Walk away if you see any of these:
- A "training fee", "registration fee" or "equipment deposit" before you start.
- An interview held only on Telegram or WhatsApp chat, with no video call and no company email address.
- An offer made without any interview or test.
- A request for your BVN, bank login or card PIN before a contract is signed.
- Pay far above what similar ads offer for a role that needs no skills.
Legitimate employers do not charge you to get a job. See how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria for more warning signs and what to do if you have already paid.
Common mistakes after passing out
- Waiting until passing-out parade to start learning, then facing months without income.
- Listing every course you have taken while showing no real work.
- Leaving out PPA and CDS experience because it "doesn't count".
- Applying to US-only ads and reading the silence as rejection of your skills.
- Using AI to write whole application answers. Some employers, Canonical among them, say this disqualifies you.
- Accepting the first offer without checking the payment method, contract type and working hours.
Frequently asked questions
Do foreign remote employers ask for an NYSC certificate?
Often they do not. Section 12 of the NYSC Act puts the duty on employers hiring within Nigeria, so Nigerian companies, including remote-first ones, will ask. A foreign company paying you as a contractor usually asks for your CV and degree instead, but a Nigerian EOR or subsidiary may ask for the certificate. Keep a scanned copy ready either way.
Can I get a remote job straight after graduation, before NYSC?
Yes, but choose roles that can coexist with service. Part-time, contract or evening-shift work survives mobilisation better than a full-time daytime role. Be upfront with the employer about your call-up timing, because disappearing for camp three weeks into a new job ends contracts.
Can I skip NYSC and just work remotely for a foreign company?
You can physically do the work, but skipping service when you are required to serve creates problems later. Any Nigerian employer must ask for your certificate, and government and political roles require it. If you graduated at 30 or older, or from a part-time programme, check whether you qualify for an exemption or exclusion letter on the official NYSC portal.
Do international employers care about my class of degree?
Some do and many don't. Graduate programmes such as Canonical's ask for your degree result and school grades, as of October 2026. Most contractor roles in support, sales and admin care far more about your work samples, communication and test results than your class of degree.
How long does it take to get a remote job after NYSC?
There is no reliable average, and anyone quoting one is guessing. Graduates who chose a role and built proof during service usually move faster than those who start from scratch after passing out. Plan for several months of steady applications and keep some income in the meantime.
How much do remote jobs for fresh graduates pay?
Pay varies widely by role, company and country. Remote pay offered to Nigeria-based workers is usually below what the same company pays staff in the US. Check the role's page on the remote salary guides for sourced figures, and compare any offer against published ranges in similar ads.
Do I need my own laptop to get a remote job?
For most roles, yes. Some large employers send equipment after hiring, but you will need a working laptop for assessments, video interviews and your first weeks. A phone is enough for some task-based AI data work but not for most full-time roles.
Key takeaways
- Start preparing for a remote job during your service year, not after passing out.
- Nigerian employers must ask for your NYSC certificate. Many foreign contractor roles will not, but keep the certificate and your other documents ready.
- Pick one entry-level role and build two or three work samples. These persuade hiring managers more than a list of courses.
- Graduate programmes open to worldwide applicants exist. Canonical and Outreachy are verified examples as of October 2026, and they are competitive.
- Read the location line first, and apply only to ads open to people living in Nigeria.
- Sort out power, internet and a payment method before your first offer.
