Most people who get remote IT consultant jobs from Nigeria do it in one of three ways. Some join a software vendor or consultancy as an implementation or technical consultant. Some contract with a foreign firm. Some build an independent practice around one platform they know deeply. Very few are hired on a general "IT consultant" title. Clients pay consultants to fix a specific problem, such as moving to Azure, configuring Salesforce or cleaning up a Microsoft 365 tenant, so a specialism gets you in.

This guide explains what remote IT consultants actually do and which job titles to search. It covers how to tell whether an ad accepts applicants in Nigeria, what employers and clients check, what pay benchmarks really mean for you, and a step-by-step plan for both salaried roles and building your own client base. Expect honesty about the limits: many consultant ads are restricted to the US, UK or EU, and entry-level consulting roles are rare.

Quick answer

To get a remote IT consultant job from Nigeria, specialise in one platform (for example AWS, Azure, Microsoft 365, Salesforce or an ERP). Get the relevant certification and write two or three anonymised case studies showing problems you solved. Then apply for implementation, technical or solutions consultant roles that list Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide eligibility, or offer project work directly to clients. Most roles expect two or more years of hands-on experience.

What a remote IT consultant actually does

An IT consultant advises an organisation on its technology, then usually helps deliver the change. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the closest standard occupation, computer systems analyst, as someone who reviews an organisation's systems and procedures, weighs costs and benefits, designs improvements, and oversees installation, testing and user training. The BLS also notes that these analysts may work as contractors or consultants, often for an IT firm, and that smaller firms often contract the work out instead of hiring.

Day to day, remote consulting means discovery calls with the client, written recommendations, configuration work in the client's systems, documentation and handover training. All of it happens over Zoom or Teams, with the client's tickets and documents in Jira, Confluence, SharePoint or Notion.

Job titles to search instead of "IT consultant"

Search "IT consultant" alone and you mostly get Lagos on-site roles and recruitment agencies. The remote work sits under more specific titles.

Platform consulting has its own guides in this series: remote ERP consultant jobs, remote SAP consultant roles and remote security consultant work. If you prefer designing systems to delivering them, read about remote solutions architect careers.

Three routes into remote IT consulting from Nigeria

The route decides who your client is, how you get paid and what you need before you apply. Most people start on one route and later add a second.

Route 1: employee at a software vendor or consultancy

SaaS companies hire implementation consultants to onboard their customers. Consultancies and IT partners hire technical consultants to deliver projects. You get a salary, a product to master and a steady stream of client projects. The catch is eligibility. Many of these roles are tied to one country because of payroll and client contracts (see the location section below).

Route 2: contractor to a foreign firm

Some consultancies and vendors take on consultants abroad as independent contractors, or employ them through an employer of record (EOR), which is a company that legally employs you in Nigeria on the foreign firm's behalf. Contracts often run for a project or six to twelve months. Our guide to being hired as a contractor or as an EOR employee explains the difference in rights, benefits and tax.

Route 3: independent consultant with your own clients

Here you find the clients yourself through referrals, LinkedIn, platform marketplaces or talent networks. Toptal, for example, lists "Management Consultant" and "Project Manager" among its applicant categories on its talent application page. That page does not say which countries are eligible or how screening works, so check before investing time. This route pays only when you sell, but it is the least restricted by location.

Can you apply from Nigeria? Read the location line first

Yes, when the ad lists Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or "anywhere", and nothing else in it conflicts. Plenty of consultant ads that say "remote" are remote only inside one country. Check the location and work authorisation lines before reading anything else.

A real example: as of October 2026, Greenhouse (the recruiting software company) is advertising a Senior Implementation Consultant role. The company calls itself remote-first. The ad still requires current authorisation to work in the United States and a base in the US Eastern or Central time zone, and it lists a US national pay range of $79,300 to $97,200. A Nigeria-based applicant cannot take that job, however strong their CV. The ad's anticipated closing date is 20 November 2026.

Quick rules for reading consultant ads:

  • "Remote (US)", "Remote UK" or "must be authorised to work in" means you need that country's work rights.
  • "EMEA" covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but some EMEA ads quietly mean a shortlist of countries where the company has entities. Our explainer on what EMEA means in a job ad goes into detail.
  • "Anywhere" or "worldwide" is the best sign, but read the contract type: it is often a contractor role.
  • Client-site travel ("up to 25% travel to customer sites in Germany") usually rules out applicants without a visa.

If an ad is unclear, ask the recruiter one direct question: "Can you hire someone based in Nigeria for this role, as an employee or contractor?" Our guide on checking whether a job accepts Nigerian residents has more ways to confirm.

Skills and credentials clients and employers check

Consulting pay rewards two things together: deep skill in one platform, and the ability to run a client conversation without supervision. Most hiring managers will test both.

Depth in one platform

Pick the platform you already use at work. A cloud consultant should be able to design a landing zone, set up identity and access, estimate costs and run a migration. A Microsoft 365 consultant should be comfortable with Entra ID, Intune, Exchange Online migrations and conditional access. If you are not there yet, the cloud engineer career guide and the guide to moving from IT support into cloud engineering set out the path.

Consulting skills

These are what separate a consultant from an engineer:

  • Discovery: asking the questions that reveal the real problem, budget and decision-maker.
  • Writing: a one-page recommendation a non-technical director can approve.
  • Scoping: turning a vague request into a statement of work (SOW) with deliverables, assumptions and exclusions.
  • Change management: training users and handing over documentation so the client isn't dependent on you.
  • Saying no politely when a request is outside scope.

Business analysts already do much of this, which is why the business analyst career guide is a useful companion if you come from the functional side.

Certifications worth paying for

A certification won't replace experience, but it gets a cloud or platform consultant past the first screen. Two common examples, as of October 2026:

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate: the exam costs $150 (about ₦204,300 at ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN NFEM rate on 23 October 2026). It has 65 questions in 130 minutes, and AWS recommends at least a year of hands-on AWS design experience. AWS notes that foreign exchange costs may apply.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (exam AZ-104): Microsoft prices the exam by the country where it is proctored, so check the price for Nigeria when you schedule. The certification page says it must be renewed every 12 months, and the renewal is a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

Our planned round-up of IT certifications for remote jobs compares more options, including ITIL and vendor CRM certificates.

How much remote IT consultants earn

No reliable public dataset covers pay for Nigeria-based remote IT consultants, so treat every figure below as a benchmark, not an offer.

BenchmarkFigureWhat it represents
BLS, computer systems analysts$105,850 a yearUS median, May 2025, all US workers
Greenhouse implementation consultant ad$79,300 to $97,200 a yearUS base range, US-authorised staff only

The BLS median of $105,850 is about ₦144 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM, 23 October 2026). That is what US-based workers earn, and a Nigeria-based consultant will usually be offered less. Employers often set pay by location, and contractor rates don't include benefits, pension or paid leave.

Pay rises with how specialised and in-demand your platform is, your role on the project (lead or team member), how you're paid (by the hour, by the project or a salary), and the client's size (large enterprise or small business). For the factors behind the gap, see what determines salary differences between remote workers.

A step-by-step plan to get your first remote consulting role

This sequence assumes you already have about two years of hands-on IT experience. If you don't, build that first in an IT support or junior sysadmin role. The IT support specialist guide is the usual starting point.

  1. Choose one specialism and one buyer. For example, "Microsoft 365 security for UK firms with 20 to 200 staff" or "AWS cost reduction for US startups." Narrow is easier to sell.
  2. Close your skills gaps in that specialism. Use the vendor's free learning paths (Microsoft Learn, AWS Skill Builder) and a personal lab account set to a strict budget alert.
  3. Get the matching certification. One relevant certificate beats four unrelated ones.
  4. Write two or three anonymised case studies (format below). They are your portfolio.
  5. Rewrite your CV and LinkedIn around outcomes. "Migrated 140 mailboxes to Exchange Online in a weekend with zero lost mail" says more than "responsible for email."
  6. Search the specific titles from the table above, filter for Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide, and read the location line first.
  7. Work your network for contract and independent work. Former managers, colleagues who moved abroad, and Microsoft or AWS partner firms that need delivery help are the warmest leads.
  8. Prepare for a case interview. Consultant interviews often include a scenario ("A client's Azure bill doubled. Walk us through your first week."). Practise thinking aloud, asking clarifying questions and ending with a recommendation. The business analyst interview questions cover many of the discovery and stakeholder questions you'll face.

Example (hypothetical): a short outreach message to a partner firm

"Hello Sarah, I'm a Lagos-based Microsoft 365 consultant (AZ-104, MS-102). I've led tenant migrations and conditional access rollouts for firms of 50 to 300 users. If your team ever needs extra delivery capacity on UK projects, I work UK hours (same time as London in summer, one hour ahead in winter) and can share two case studies. Would a 15-minute call next week be useful?"

It works because it names the platform, the proof, the time-zone fit and a small, specific next step.

How to build proof when client work is confidential

Consulting clients rarely let you publish their names, which leaves new consultants with an empty portfolio. The fix is an anonymised case study: describe the client by industry and size, then show the problem, your approach and a measurable result.

Example (hypothetical): a one-page case study

  • Client: a 120-staff logistics company in Lagos.
  • Problem: staff shared passwords, there was no multi-factor authentication (MFA), and laptops weren't managed.
  • What I did: a two-week assessment, then a phased rollout of MFA, conditional access and Intune device enrolment, with user training sessions in three batches.
  • Result: MFA coverage went from none to all staff accounts within six weeks, and lost laptops can now be wiped remotely.
  • Tools: Microsoft Entra ID, Intune, Defender for Business.

Use only real work you did, with figures you can defend in an interview. If you have no client work yet, a lab project written up honestly ("built in a personal test tenant") is acceptable. Don't pass a lab off as a client engagement.

Working as a remote IT consultant from Nigeria

Clients abroad will forgive a Nigerian address. They won't forgive a dropped call during a cut-over weekend. Sort out the practical side before your first contract.

Power and internet

  • Run your laptop, router and monitor on an inverter or solar setup that lasts a full working day, with a generator as last resort. Grid supply varies widely, even between DisCo tariff bands.
  • Keep two internet routes: a fixed line or Starlink as primary, plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network. Test the failover before a live migration, not during it.

Time zones

Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. London is on GMT from 25 October 2026, so Lagos is one hour ahead until the UK moves to BST in spring. Central Europe is on the same time as Lagos in winter. US Eastern is five hours behind until 1 November 2026, then six. Go-lives and cut-overs often happen outside the client's business hours, so a US migration weekend can mean working through a Lagos night. Agree on core overlap hours in the contract.

Getting paid and tax

Employees paid through an EOR receive salary in their local arrangement. Contractors and independents usually invoice in dollars and withdraw through Payoneer, Wise, Grey, Raenest or a domiciliary account. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and fees. Consulting income is taxable in Nigeria. Read how tax works for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 before you set your rates.

Contracts

For independent work, put a short SOW in writing for every project: deliverables, timeline, assumptions, what is out of scope, payment schedule (a deposit is normal) and who owns the documentation. A one-page SOW prevents most disputes about unpaid extra work.

Mistakes and scams to avoid

  • Applying on title alone. "IT consultant" ads from staffing agencies often mean on-site work in Lagos or Abuja. Read the location and work mode first.
  • Being a generalist. "I can do networking, cloud, web design and data" makes clients unsure what to hire you for. Lead with one specialism.
  • Ignoring work authorisation lines. No cover letter fixes a "must be authorised to work in the US" requirement.
  • Underpricing to win the first client. Very low rates attract clients who expect unlimited scope. Price by deliverable where you can.
  • Fake consulting "partnerships". Be wary of anyone asking you to pay for onboarding, a mandatory course, equipment or "certification fees" before you start, or asking for your BVN or bank login. Genuine firms don't charge consultants to join. See our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
  • Giving away free consulting. A short discovery call is normal. A full written architecture before any agreement is unpaid work.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian work as an IT consultant for a foreign company?

Yes, when the company can hire or contract someone based in Nigeria. Many do it through contractor agreements or an employer of record. Roles that require US, UK or EU work authorisation are not open to you, so check the location line in every ad.

Do I need a degree to become a remote IT consultant?

Not always. The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry route for computer systems analysts, but consulting clients care more about proven delivery and platform certifications. A degree still helps with some large consultancies and with visa-linked roles.

How many years of experience do I need?

Usually at least two years of hands-on work in your specialism, and often more. The Greenhouse implementation consultant ad, for example, asks for 2+ years working with enterprise customers. Genuine entry-level remote consulting roles are rare.

Which certification should an IT consultant get first?

The one that matches the platform you want to consult on. For AWS work, the Solutions Architect Associate ($150 exam, as of October 2026) is a common first step. For Microsoft cloud and 365 work, AZ-104 or a Microsoft 365 administrator certification fits better.

How much does a remote IT consultant earn from Nigeria?

There is no reliable public figure for Nigeria-based remote IT consultants. As a benchmark, US computer systems analysts had a median of $105,850 a year in May 2025 (BLS), and Nigeria-based workers are usually offered less. Your rate depends on your specialism, your seniority and your contract type (employee or contractor).

Is freelancing or a full-time role better for IT consulting?

A full-time role at a vendor or consultancy is better for building experience and steady income. Independent consulting pays more per hour once you have a reputation and a referral network, but income is uneven. Many consultants start employed and add independent work later.

What is the difference between an IT consultant and a solutions engineer?

An IT consultant usually advises on and delivers a change for a client after the sale. A solutions engineer supports the sales process with demos and technical answers before the deal closes. Our guide to getting a remote solutions engineer job covers that role.

Key takeaways

  • Remote IT consulting work sits under specific titles such as implementation, technical, cloud, Microsoft 365, ERP and solutions consultant.
  • There are three routes: vendor or consultancy employee, contractor, and independent consultant. They differ mainly in eligibility, income stability and who finds the clients.
  • Many "remote" consultant ads require US, UK or EU work authorisation, so read the location line before anything else.
  • Specialise in one platform, earn the matching certification and build anonymised case studies with real, defensible results.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks only. Offers to Nigeria-based consultants are usually lower and depend on specialism and contract type.
  • Backup power, two internet routes, agreed overlap hours and a written SOW protect your reputation with clients abroad.

Next steps

Pick your specialism this week and write your first anonymised case study. Then search remote tech jobs on WorkRemote for "implementation consultant", "technical consultant" or your platform's name. Each listing shows where applicants may live, but still confirm eligibility on the employer's own ad. Save that search with "Get email updates" to get a free daily digest of new matching jobs. If you want help presenting consulting work, the CV and LinkedIn rewrite included in Premium is done by a person on our team. Premium also includes interview prep, and Premium members are invited to a job interview within their first week (an interview invite, not a job offer).
