Remote ERP consultant jobs exist, and they pay well, but most are open only to people in particular countries. Few are open to applicants living in Nigeria. The realistic way in is to build experience on one ERP platform (usually with a Nigerian implementation partner or a company's finance team), get the vendor certification, and then target partner firms, freelance contracts and the smaller number of global roles that accept Africa-based consultants.

This guide explains what ERP consultants do, how the functional and technical tracks differ, and which platform makes sense to learn first from Nigeria. It also covers what certifications cost as of October 2026, what the pay benchmarks mean for you, and why so many "remote" ERP ads exclude Nigeria. You'll find a practical plan for landing your first remote ERP role, a checklist for reading job ads and the mistakes that keep good candidates stuck.

Quick answer

An ERP consultant sets up and supports enterprise resource planning software such as SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 or Odoo, so that a company can run its finance, inventory, purchasing and operations in one system. The work can be done remotely, but many remote ERP ads restrict candidates to one country. Nigerians usually get in through local partner experience, a vendor certification and contract or freelance work.

What an ERP consultant actually does

ERP stands for enterprise resource planning: software that puts a company's accounting, purchasing, inventory, sales, payroll and sometimes manufacturing into one shared system. An ERP consultant helps a company choose, set up, change or support that system.

A typical implementation project runs in stages, and the consultant has work in every one:

  1. Discovery. Workshops with the finance, warehouse and sales teams to map how they work now (the "as-is" process) and how they should work in the new system (the "to-be" process).
  2. Design and configuration. Setting up the chart of accounts, tax codes, approval workflows, item records, warehouses and user roles.
  3. Data migration. Cleaning and loading opening balances, customers, vendors and stock from spreadsheets or the old system.
  4. Testing. Writing test scripts and running user acceptance testing with the client.
  5. Training and go-live. Training users, supporting the first month-end close, and fixing what breaks.
  6. Support. Ongoing tickets, small changes and upgrades. This is often called "managed services" or "AMS" (application management services).

The last stage matters for Nigerians. Support and managed-services work is the most remote-friendly part of ERP consulting, because it rarely needs anyone in the client's office.

Functional vs technical ERP consultants

ERP consulting splits into two tracks. Job ads usually say which one they want, and the skills are different.

TrackWhat you doTypical background
FunctionalMap business processes, configure modules, train usersAccounting, supply chain, HR, business analysis
TechnicalWrite scripts, integrations, reports, data migrationsSoftware development, SQL, databases
Techno-functionalA mix of both, common in smaller firmsEither, plus the other side picked up on the job

A functional consultant on Dynamics 365 Finance needs to understand general ledger, payables, receivables, budgeting and fixed assets. Those are the areas Microsoft's MB-310 exam tests. A technical NetSuite consultant works with SuiteScript (NetSuite's JavaScript-based scripting) and the platform's integration tools. If you're an accountant, the functional track is the natural fit. If you're a developer, start technical.

Which ERP platform to learn first from Nigeria

The platform you pick decides the clients you can serve, the certificate you'll take and how easy it is to practise. Here is how the main options compare for someone starting from Nigeria.

PlatformUsual clientsPractice access for a beginner
SAP S/4HANALarge companies, multinationalsHard without an employer or partner
Oracle Fusion Cloud ERPLarge companies, public sectorHard without an employer or partner
Oracle NetSuiteFast-growing mid-sized firms, many US-basedUsually through a partner or employer
Microsoft Dynamics 365 (Finance, Business Central)Mid-sized to large firmsFree learning paths on Microsoft Learn
OdooSmall and mid-sized firmsOpen-source Community edition you can install yourself
Sage (Intacct, 300)Small and mid-sized firms, strong in South Africa and the UKUsually through a partner

Some honest guidance on choosing:

  • If you already work somewhere that runs SAP or Oracle, stay with that platform. Nigeria's banks, oil and gas firms, telecoms companies and large manufacturers have used these systems for years, so hands-on experience at one of them is worth more than any course. Our guides to remote SAP consultant jobs and remote Oracle consultant jobs cover those two platforms in detail.
  • If you're starting from zero, Odoo and Dynamics 365 are the easiest to practise on yourself. You can install Odoo Community on a laptop and build a test company, and Microsoft publishes free study material for its Dynamics exams.
  • If you want US mid-market clients, NetSuite is worth a look. Many NetSuite partners are in North America, which means good pay but also US-hours work and frequent country restrictions (see the examples below).

Pick one platform and get good at it. Recruiters hire "a NetSuite consultant with two implementations", not "someone who knows a bit of four ERPs".

Can you do ERP consulting remotely from Nigeria?

Yes, but you need to know which kinds of remote ERP work are actually open to you. ERP hiring is more location-bound than, say, software development, for three reasons.

First, partners usually hire where their clients are. A partner that serves South African mid-sized companies wants consultants who know South African tax and can attend a workshop in person. Second, many implementations still involve some on-site time. Third, ERP consultants handle sensitive financial data, and some clients' contracts require the people touching that data to be in a particular country.

Two live ads we opened in October 2026 show how this looks in practice:

  • TydeCo, a Sage partner, advertised a remote Senior ERP Consultant role (posted 17 August 2026) for Sage Intacct and Sage 300. "Remote" here means South Africa: the ad offers the Cape Town or Durban office or remote work from Gauteng, with travel to Cape Town as needed. Its ERP Consultant role has the same conditions.
  • Beyond Cloud Consulting advertised a remote NetSuite Senior Consultant role that says candidates must be based in India and work 9am to 5pm US Eastern time.

Neither is open to Nigeria. Both are labelled "remote". This is normal in ERP hiring, so read the location line before you read anything else.

During our research (October 2026), we also searched Greenhouse, Lever and Workable boards for ERP consultant ads that explicitly accepted applicants in Nigeria, Africa or worldwide, and we couldn't verify a current one. That doesn't mean they never appear. It means you shouldn't expect a steady supply of them, and you should plan to combine several routes.

The four kinds of remote ERP work

Type of workOpen to Nigeria-based people? What to check
Remote employee of a foreign partner, single country onlyNo, unless you live thereThe location line in the ad
Remote employee of a firm hiring across several countries (EMEA, Africa)SometimesWhether Nigeria is on the country list
Contractor or subcontractor to a foreign partnerOften, if you have experienceContract terms, payment method, time zone
Freelance support for small businessesYesPlatform rules, scope, payment protection

If an ad says "EMEA", it covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa in principle, but many employers only hire in the EMEA countries where they have a legal entity or an employer-of-record set-up. Our article on what EMEA means in a remote job description explains how to read it, and how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents gives the full checking process.

Being hired as a contractor or as an employee through an employer of record (EOR) changes your benefits, notice period and tax position. Our guide to contractor vs employee arrangements from Nigeria covers the differences.

Skills employers look for in ERP consultants

Look across remote ERP ads and the same requirements keep appearing. The two TydeCo ads ask for three or more years of ERP implementation experience with configuration and delivery responsibility, plus experience in a multi-client, multi-time-zone environment. The Beyond Cloud ad asks for three or more years of hands-on NetSuite configuration and consulting, plus a background in finance, accounting or supply chain.

In plain terms, a hiring manager wants evidence of:

  • Business process knowledge. For finance modules, this means double-entry bookkeeping, month-end close, accruals, VAT and withholding tax, bank reconciliation and multi-currency. For supply chain modules, it means procure-to-pay, order-to-cash and inventory costing.
  • Platform configuration. Setting up workflows, approval rules, saved searches or reports, and user roles without needing a developer.
  • Data work. Excel (lookups, pivot tables, Power Query) and basic SQL for cleaning and checking migration data.
  • Written communication. Process documents, test scripts and training guides that a client's finance team can follow. Remote consultants live and die by their documentation.
  • Workshop skills. Running a two-hour discovery call on Teams or Zoom with a sceptical finance director and coming out with clear decisions.
  • Project discipline. Tracking tasks in Jira, Asana or Monday.com (TydeCo's ad names Asana and Monday as a plus) and meeting go-live dates.

Technical consultants also need a scripting language for their platform (SuiteScript for NetSuite, X++ or AL for Dynamics 365, Python for Odoo, ABAP for SAP), REST APIs and integration tools.

If you come from business analysis, our business analyst career guide covers requirements gathering and process mapping, which carry straight over to functional ERP work. Accountants should look at the remote accountant career guide for the finance side.

ERP certifications and what they cost (as of October 2026)

Vendor certification matters more in ERP than in most IT fields, because partners need certified staff to keep their partner status. A certificate won't replace project experience, but it gets your CV past the first filter, especially when the hiring manager has never heard of your Nigerian employer.

CertificationCost we foundNotes
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate (exam MB-310)Priced by country where you sit it100-minute proctored exam; free renewal every 12 months
NetSuite ERP Consultant$250 per exam, $150 retakeTwo exams; NetSuite recommends about 2 years of implementation work
NetSuite SuiteFoundation$250, $150 retakeEntry-level exam; 80 minutes, 66 questions
Odoo 17 CertificationShown as £200 when we checked125 questions in 90 minutes; 70% pass mark
SAP certificationsVaries by exam and regionFree SAP preparation courses; check prices on SAP's site

Details from the official pages:

  • Microsoft. The MB-310 exam page says the exam covers financial management, accounts receivable and collections, accounts payable and expenses, budgeting and fixed assets. It's offered in English and Japanese and booked through Pearson VUE. The price depends on the country where the exam is proctored, so check the Nigerian price when you book. You renew free by passing an online assessment every 12 months.
  • NetSuite. NetSuite's certification page lists a $250 registration fee and $150 retake fee for the ERP Consultant exam (120 minutes, 80 questions). It recommends the equivalent of at least two years of NetSuite implementations in a consulting role. That makes it a certificate for proving experience, not for starting out. SuiteFoundation is the realistic first step.
  • Odoo. The Odoo 17 certification page showed £200 when we opened it (the page displays prices in the visitor's local currency, so you may see dollars). The exam covers modules including Accounting, Inventory, Sales, Purchase, CRM, MRP and HR. Wrong answers cost half a point, so guessing is penalised. The page was last updated in June 2024, so check whether a newer version's exam has replaced it.
  • SAP. SAP's certification page points to free preparation material on learning.sap.com. Exam prices vary by exam and region, and we couldn't confirm a current official price, so check SAP's site before budgeting.

Paying for exams in dollars from Nigeria usually means a dollar card, and some naira cards fail on international exam portals. Our guide to receiving and spending dollars in Nigeria covers the main dollar card and account options.

How much remote ERP consultants earn

We couldn't find published pay data for ERP consultants based in Nigeria and working remotely, so treat the figures below as benchmarks, not offers.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't track ERP consultants as a separate job. The two closest occupations are:

  • Computer systems analysts: median pay of $105,850 a year in May 2025, according to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook. BLS projects employment to grow 8% from 2025 to 2035. These analysts design and configure business systems and train end users, which is close to technical and techno-functional ERP work.
  • Management analysts: median pay of $101,860 a year in May 2025, per BLS, with 10% projected growth from 2025 to 2035. This is closer to the process-consulting side of functional work.

These are US medians for people living and working in the US. A Nigeria-based consultant working remotely for a foreign firm will usually be offered less than US local pay, often a lot less. Pay depends on your platform, your certification, how many go-lives you've delivered, whether you can cover US or UK hours, and your contract type (contractor or employee). The fact that most remote ERP ads are single-country ads also tells you something: firms that do hire internationally often do it to reduce cost.

For a sense of what related remote roles pay Nigeria-based workers, see our business analyst salary guide.

Example (hypothetical): checking a contract offer

Say a UK partner offers you a $2,000 a month contract for NetSuite support. At the CBN official rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026), that's about ₦2,724,000 a month before any deductions. Before you accept, work out:

  • what you lose in withdrawal fees and exchange spreads (compare the options in our dollar payments guide)
  • your Nigerian tax on that income (see tax for remote workers in Nigeria)
  • your monthly cost of backup power and a second internet connection
  • whether the hours mean working into the night

That last point leads to time zones.

Time zones, power and the Nigerian working day

ERP work comes in bursts. Month-end close, go-live weekends and year-end are when clients need you, and they need you in their hours.

Nigeria is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year. Here is what common client hours look like from Lagos:

Client locationClient's 9am to 5pm in Lagos
UK, winter (GMT)10am to 6pm
UK, summer (BST)9am to 5pm
Central Europe, winter9am to 5pm
US Eastern, winter (EST, from 1 November 2026)3pm to 11pm
US Pacific, winter6pm to 2am
Dubai6am to 2pm

UK, European, South African and Middle Eastern clients fit the Nigerian day well. US clients mean evening and night work, like the 9am to 5pm Eastern requirement in the Beyond Cloud ad. If you go after NetSuite work, many of whose partners are American, be honest with yourself about whether you can keep up US hours for years.

A go-live weekend or a payroll run with a client is the worst time for NEPA to take light. Before you take client work, have an inverter or solar set-up that can run your laptop and router for a full working day, and two internet routes (a primary ISP plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network). ERP systems are web-based, so a dropped connection mid-data-load can cost you hours.

How to get your first remote ERP consultant role from Nigeria

Here is a realistic plan. Most people take a couple of years to get from step 1 to step 6, and you can't skip the experience.

  1. Pick your track and platform. Functional if you come from accounting, audit, supply chain or HR. Technical if you code. Choose one platform using the table above.
  2. Get hands-on access. The best route is a job with a Nigerian ERP implementation partner, or a super-user or finance-systems role at a company running the platform. If neither is open to you yet, install Odoo Community or use Microsoft's free learning material and build a fictional company end to end: chart of accounts, a purchase cycle, a sales cycle, inventory, a month-end close.
  3. Take the entry certificate. SuiteFoundation for NetSuite, MB-310 (or the relevant module exam) for Dynamics 365, the Odoo certification, or an SAP associate exam if your employer runs SAP.
  4. Document your work. Write up two or three case studies, each with the business problem, what you configured, the data you migrated, what went wrong and the result. Leave out client names and data you're not allowed to share. Our guide to presenting personal projects on a remote job application shows how to do this.
  5. Deliver real go-lives. Two full implementations is the line many ads draw (the TydeCo ads ask for three years of implementation experience). Support tickets count too, so keep a log of the problems you solved.
  6. Go after remote work in this order: subcontracting for foreign partners (they often need extra hands at go-live), freelance support for small businesses on Odoo, Business Central or NetSuite, and then global remote roles that explicitly list Nigeria, Africa or worldwide.
  7. Rewrite your CV for ERP buyers. Lead with the platform, modules, version, number of go-lives, industries and certification. "Configured NetSuite OneWorld for a three-entity distributor, migrated 4,000 items and ran the first two month-end closes" beats "ERP experience".

Where to find remote ERP openings

  • Partner directories. Microsoft, Oracle NetSuite, SAP and Odoo all publish partner listings. Go through them, look for partners serving the UK, Europe, the Middle East or Africa, and check their careers pages directly. Our guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages explains how.
  • Job boards. Search with the platform name plus "remote", then filter by location. On WorkRemote.ng, the tech job listings show where applicants may live on each listing, which saves you reading ads you can't apply for.
  • LinkedIn. ERP is a small world. Partners' delivery managers post subcontracting needs before they post jobs, and a Nigerian consultant with visible go-lives gets approached.
  • Freelance platforms. Small businesses post short NetSuite, Odoo and Business Central fixes. They make good first foreign clients, but the pay is lower and you need to agree the scope carefully.

Mistakes and risks to avoid

  • Collecting certificates without go-lives. Four exams and no implementation looks weaker than one certificate and two real projects. NetSuite itself recommends two years of implementation work before its ERP Consultant exam.
  • Applying to every "remote" ERP ad. As the examples above show, many are single-country. Check eligibility first, and if the ad doesn't say, ask before you invest time in an assessment.
  • Ignoring local tax knowledge. Functional consultants are expected to configure tax correctly. If you serve UK clients, learn VAT basics there. If you serve Nigerian or African clients from abroad, your knowledge of Nigerian VAT and withholding tax is a selling point, so say so.
  • Underpricing fixed-price projects. ERP scope grows. Write the scope down, and price changes separately.
  • Paying for "guaranteed ERP placement" courses. Some training sellers promise a job after their course. No legitimate employer requires you to pay a recruiter or trainer to be hired. Our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.
  • Treating data carelessly. You'll handle payroll, bank details and customer data. Use the client's systems and VPN, never personal email, and turn on two-factor authentication on every account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I become an ERP consultant without an accounting degree?

Yes. Many technical consultants have computing backgrounds, and functional consultants come from supply chain, HR and operations as well as accounting. For finance modules, though, you need to understand double-entry bookkeeping and month-end close, whatever your degree says. A professional qualification such as ICAN or ACCA helps functional finance consultants, but delivered projects matter more.

Which ERP should a Nigerian beginner learn first?

If your employer already runs SAP or Oracle, learn that. If you're starting from scratch, Odoo and Microsoft Dynamics 365 are the easiest to practise on alone: Odoo Community is open source, and Microsoft publishes free study material. Choose based on the clients you want. NetSuite partners are often US-focused, while Sage and Odoo are common with small and mid-sized firms.

Do ERP consultants need to code?

Functional consultants usually don't. They configure the system with its built-in settings and workflows, plus Excel and some SQL. Technical consultants do code, in the platform's language (SuiteScript, X++ or AL, Python for Odoo, ABAP for SAP) and with APIs for integrations.

How much do remote ERP consultants earn?

We found no published data for Nigeria-based remote ERP consultants. As a US benchmark, BLS reports a median of $105,850 a year for computer systems analysts in May 2025. Nigeria-based remote consultants are usually offered less than US local pay, and the amount depends on platform, certification, go-live experience and contract type.

Can a fresh graduate get a remote ERP consultant job?

It's rare. Remote ERP ads usually ask for two or three years of implementation experience. Fresh graduates do better joining a Nigerian ERP partner or a company's finance-systems team as a junior or graduate trainee, then moving to remote work after delivering projects. See our remote jobs for Nigerians with no experience for more accessible starting roles.

Is the NetSuite ERP Consultant certification worth it from Nigeria?

Yes, once you have the experience it assumes. NetSuite lists the exam at $250, with a $150 retake fee, and recommends about two years of implementation work first. Before that, SuiteFoundation ($250) is the better first step. Check current fees on Oracle's site before paying.

What is the difference between an ERP consultant and an ERP administrator?

A consultant usually works for a partner or as a contractor, serving several clients through implementations and changes. An administrator works inside one company, keeping its ERP running: user access, small changes, reports and first-line support. Administrator roles are a common stepping stone into consulting.

Key takeaways

  • ERP consultants set up and support systems such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Dynamics 365, Odoo and Sage, on either a functional (business process) or a technical (code and integration) track.
  • Many remote ERP ads are limited to one country. The two we opened in October 2026 required South Africa and India. Check the location line first.
  • Pick one platform, get hands-on access through a Nigerian partner or employer (or a self-built Odoo or Dynamics practice company), and certify.
  • Certification costs we found, as of October 2026: NetSuite $250 per exam, Odoo shown at £200, Microsoft priced by country with free annual renewal.
  • US benchmarks (about $106,000 median for computer systems analysts) are not what Nigeria-based consultants are offered. Expect less, and price in fees, tax, power and night hours.
  • Subcontracting for foreign partners and freelance support are the most accessible remote routes from Nigeria. Global roles open to Nigeria come later.
