A remote operations assistant keeps a company's day-to-day processes running from a laptop. That means updating order and vendor records, chasing follow-ups, keeping trackers clean and sending end-of-day reports. You can become one from Nigeria without a degree in operations. You need strong spreadsheet and written English skills, proof that you can run a process without being reminded, and a setup that survives NEPA (the grid) and a dead network.
The job sits between a virtual assistant and an operations coordinator. That's why many people apply for the wrong roles, or describe themselves badly on their CV. This guide covers what operations assistants actually do and how the role differs from VA and admin work. It also covers pay, with real sourced figures, and which ads Nigerians can realistically apply to. Then comes a step-by-step plan, including a small portfolio project that shows a hiring manager you can do the work before they hire you.
Quick answer
To become a remote operations assistant, learn Google Sheets or Excel well (filters, lookups, simple dashboards), get comfortable with a project tool such as Asana, ClickUp or Trello, and build one sample tracker and SOP (standard operating procedure) that shows process thinking. Then apply to remote roles open to Nigeria-based applicants. Check the location line first, and expect many roles to require US or UK business hours.
What a remote operations assistant actually does
Operations is the part of a business that makes sure things happen: orders go out, vendors get paid, new staff get accounts, reports land on the manager's desk. An operations assistant does the repetitive, detail-heavy work that keeps those processes moving, usually under an operations manager or a founder.
A live Nigerian example shows the work clearly. A remote "Customer Care & Delivery Operations Assistant" ad for the e-commerce brand Homebovo, posted through Jobgam Technologies on jobnow.ng (posted 21 October 2026, closing 21 November 2026, checked October 2026), lists these duties:
- confirming orders with customers and contacting delivery agents
- following up on delayed, rescheduled or returned orders
- recording order status and notes in the company's order and accounting records
- reconciling delivery updates against the order list and flagging discrepancies
- sending an end-of-day report
That is operations work in plain form: a process, a record of it and a report on it. With foreign companies, the same pattern shows up with different nouns. Instead of deliveries, you might track candidate applications, vendor invoices, software subscriptions or customer onboarding steps.
Typical tasks and the tools behind them
| Task | What it looks like | Common tools |
|---|---|---|
| Tracker upkeep | Updating order, vendor or candidate status | Google Sheets, Excel, Airtable |
| Task follow-up | Chasing overdue items with colleagues | Asana, ClickUp, Trello, Slack |
| Invoices and expenses | Logging bills, collecting approvals | Sheets, QuickBooks, Xero |
| Documentation | Writing and updating SOPs | Notion, Google Docs |
| Reporting | Daily or weekly status summaries | Sheets, Looker Studio, email |
| Scheduling | Booking meetings, managing calendars | Google Calendar, Calendly |
The exact mix depends on the company. A recruitment firm's operations assistant spends hours in pipelines. An e-commerce brand's spends them on orders and couriers.
Operations assistant vs virtual assistant vs admin assistant
These titles overlap, and employers use them loosely. The difference is mostly who you serve and what you're measured on.
| Role | Main focus | Usually reports to |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual assistant | One person's inbox, calendar and errands | A founder or executive |
| Administrative assistant | Office support, documents, scheduling | A team or office manager |
| Operations assistant | Keeping business processes and records accurate | An operations manager |
| Operations coordinator | Owning processes and improving them | Head of operations |
In short, a virtual assistant is measured on whether their boss's day ran smoothly. An operations assistant is measured on whether the process ran smoothly: were the records right, were the delays caught, was the report on time?
That difference matters for your CV. If you've done VA work, rewrite it as process outcomes ("kept a 120-row vendor tracker current daily") rather than personal support ("managed CEO's calendar"). If the personal-support side suits you better, our virtual assistant career guide and the planned roundup of VA jobs for Nigerians cover that route.
Skills and tools employers ask for
Operations assistant ads repeat the same small set of requirements. The Homebovo ad asks for strong spoken and written communication, good record keeping, basic spreadsheet skills, and a reliable laptop, internet and power with a backup plan. A Sophilabs "Operations Assistant (Remote)" ad on Dynamite Jobs (updated 1 July 2026 and closed when checked in October 2026) asked for English at B2 level, time management and prioritisation, and independent problem-solving.
The skills that get you hired
- Spreadsheets beyond the basics. Sorting and filtering are expected. What separates candidates is XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, conditional formatting for overdue items, data validation drop-downs and a simple summary tab with COUNTIF or pivot tables.
- Clear written English. Most of the job is Slack messages, emails and short reports to people in other countries. Short, specific updates beat long polite ones.
- Following a process, then improving it. Hiring managers want someone who does the checklist every day. They also want someone who notices when step 4 keeps failing and says so.
- Confidentiality. You'll see customer details, invoices and sometimes salaries. The Homebovo ad specifically asks applicants to keep customer information confidential.
- Comfort on calls. Plenty of operations roles include phone or chat follow-ups with customers, couriers or candidates.
Tools worth learning first
Learn Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Drive, Calendar) and one project tool before anything else. Asana, ClickUp and Trello all have free plans, and an hour of building a real board in any of them teaches more than a certificate. A recruiting firm, Somewhere, lists G Suite, Microsoft 365, Asana, ClickUp and Trello as the certifications and tools it looks for in remote assistants, along with Notion and CRM familiarity.
After that, add what matches the industry you're targeting: QuickBooks or Xero for finance-heavy roles, HubSpot for sales operations, an applicant tracking system for recruitment firms. The planned guide on tools for managing assistant tasks compares the options.
Can you become an operations assistant with no experience?
Yes, but you need to replace experience with evidence. Some ads are open to beginners. The Sophilabs ad above listed no years of experience, only skills and availability. Many others ask for prior admin, customer service or VA work, and the Homebovo ad lists customer service, dispatch, e-commerce or admin experience as "an advantage" rather than a must.
The experience that counts is often hiding in jobs you've already done:
- running stock records in a family shop
- coordinating logistics for a church, student association or NYSC CDS group
- handling dispatch for a small online business on Instagram or WhatsApp
- keeping attendance or fee records as a teacher or class rep
- bank or POS operations, where reconciliation is a daily habit
Write these up honestly as operations work with numbers attached. If you have nothing like this yet, the portfolio project in the steps below fills the gap. For more beginner-friendly options, see our page on remote jobs that hire beginners.
How much remote operations assistants earn
Pay depends heavily on where the employer is, where they're willing to hire and how they engage you: as a local employee or as an overseas contractor. There's no reliable published salary survey for Nigeria-based operations assistants, so the figures below are benchmarks from named sources rather than a market average.
| Source | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| US BLS, May 2025 | $48,310 a year median | US-based secretaries and admin assistants |
| US BLS, May 2025 | $76,590 a year median | US executive secretaries and executive admin assistants |
| Sophilabs ad, 2026 | $700 to $850 a month | Published range, remote, full-time |
| Somewhere calculator | $1.7K to $3.7K a month | Recruiter's estimate for South Africa-based VAs |
Notes on the table:
- The US Bureau of Labor Statistics figure is for people working in the US. It is a ceiling for comparison, not what a Nigeria-based remote worker is offered. The same BLS page lists the median as $23.23 an hour and expects employment in the occupation to decline 2% over 2025 to 2035, though it still projects about 314,400 openings a year from people leaving the job.
- The Sophilabs ad didn't state country restrictions or a time zone for its 9am to 6pm hours. At the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), $700 to $850 a month is roughly ₦953,000 to ₦1,158,000 a month before any fees or tax.
- Somewhere's figures are its own estimates for virtual assistants it places, and the page doesn't list Nigeria at all. South Africa is the closest African comparison it gives.
Realistically, Nigeria-based operations assistants hired by foreign companies are usually paid well below US local pay. Local remote roles with Nigerian companies, like the Homebovo one, often don't publish pay ("competitive; shared with shortlisted candidates"). Ask for the figure before investing hours in tests. For a broader picture of admin pay, see the administrative assistant salary guide.
Which remote operations assistant jobs Nigerians can apply for
Not every "remote" ad is open to you. Before reading the duties, read the location line. The common patterns are:
- Nigeria or Africa-based remote. Open to you by design. The Homebovo ad specifies Nigeria.
- Worldwide or "anywhere". Usually open, but check for hidden conditions such as required hours or "must have a US bank account".
- Single-country remote (US only, South Africa only). Not open to Nigerian residents, however well you fit. During research, several operations assistant ads on Lever and Workable said "remote" but were limited to South Africa.
- Region-based (EMEA, Europe). Sometimes open to Nigeria, often limited to specific countries in the small print.
When an ad says nothing about location, ask the recruiter one direct question: "Are you able to hire someone based in Nigeria for this role?" It saves both of you time. The planned guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents covers this in more detail.
Also check how you'd be engaged. Most foreign companies hire Nigeria-based assistants as independent contractors, sometimes through a platform such as Deel. A few use an employer of record. The difference affects leave, notice and tax, and our page on contractor versus EOR employment explains it.
Step-by-step: becoming a remote operations assistant from Nigeria
This plan assumes you can give it about 6 to 8 weeks of evenings. Move faster if you already use spreadsheets at work.
- Pick one industry to target. E-commerce, recruitment, real estate and SaaS (software as a service) companies all hire operations assistants, but their tools differ. Choosing one makes your portfolio and CV specific.
- Get properly good at Google Sheets. Learn lookups, drop-downs, conditional formatting, filters, COUNTIF/SUMIF and a basic pivot table. Google's own Sheets help pages and free YouTube tutorials are enough.
- Learn one project tool. Set up a free Asana, ClickUp or Trello board with recurring tasks, assignees and due dates.
- Build a portfolio project (example below). One tracker, one SOP and one weekly report, all about the same process.
- Rewrite your CV around processes and numbers. Lead with a short summary ("Operations assistant focused on order tracking, vendor records and daily reporting"), then bullets with outcomes. The planned guide to a VA CV that gets interviews has formats that work for this role too.
- Fix your setup before you apply. Ads now ask about power backup and internet in the application itself (more on this below).
- Apply to 5 to 10 well-matched roles a week. Read the location line first and tailor the first three CV bullets to each ad's duties.
- Prepare for the practical test. Expect a short exercise. Homebovo's ad says shortlisted candidates may complete a sample customer follow-up and order-status update.
Example (hypothetical): a portfolio project for an e-commerce operations role
Create a Google Sheet called "Order tracker: sample Lagos skincare brand" with 50 made-up orders. Use columns for order ID, customer area, courier, dispatch date, status (drop-down: pending, out for delivery, delivered, failed, returned), follow-up date and notes. Add conditional formatting that turns a row red when the follow-up date has passed. Add a summary tab counting orders by status and listing failed deliveries by courier.
Next, write a one-page SOP in Google Docs: "How to handle a failed delivery", in numbered steps, including who to contact and what to record. Finally, write a five-line end-of-day report as you'd post it in Slack: totals, problems, what you need from the manager.
Share all three as view-only links on your CV. This takes a weekend and answers the hiring manager's real question: will this person keep our records right without supervision?
Example (hypothetical): turning past work into CV bullets
Weak: "Responsible for record keeping and customer communication."
Stronger: "Tracked about 40 weekly orders for a small online fashion store in a shared Google Sheet; followed up on failed deliveries within 24 hours and sent the owner a Friday summary."
Only use numbers you can defend in an interview.
Your setup in Nigeria: hours, power, internet and pay
Working hours across time zones
Many foreign operations roles follow the employer's office hours, because your job is to keep things moving while the team works. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time (EST) is 6 hours behind Lagos, so a 9am to 5pm New York shift runs from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. US Pacific hours start at 6pm Lagos time. UK hours are easier: in winter (GMT), 9am to 5pm London is 10am to 6pm in Lagos, and in summer (BST) it's the same clock time. Be honest with yourself about whether you can sustain a late shift for months.
Power and internet
The Homebovo ad asks applicants to describe their laptop, internet and power backup in the application, and many foreign employers ask the same on calls. Plan for:
- an inverter with batteries, solar, or at minimum a generator, so a grid outage doesn't end your shift
- two internet sources, for example a home ISP or Starlink plus a MiFi, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network
- a quiet corner for calls, since many operations roles include phone follow-ups
Write one line in your cover note describing this setup. It answers a question the recruiter is already wondering about.
Getting paid
Foreign employers usually pay contractors in dollars through platforms such as Deel or through direct transfers to dollar-receiving apps or a domiciliary account. Fees and exchange rates differ a lot between options, so compare them using our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria. Remote income is also taxable. Read tax rules for remote workers in Nigeria before your first payment arrives.
Common mistakes and warning signs
Mistakes that cost applicants interviews
- Applying to US-only or South Africa-only roles. It wastes your best hours. Read the location line first.
- A VA-style CV for an operations role. Calendar management bullets don't show process ownership. Rewrite them as records kept, errors caught and reports sent.
- Claiming tools you've never opened. Practical tests expose this within minutes.
- Ignoring the setup question. "I have constant light" is not a plan. Name your backup.
- Slow replies during hiring. Operations hiring managers read your response time as a preview of your work.
Scam signs specific to assistant roles
Operations and admin titles are popular with fraudsters because the duties sound simple. Walk away if a "recruiter" asks you to pay for training, equipment or a "starter kit". Do the same if they ask you to receive money into your account and forward it, or to buy gift cards for the "CEO". The same goes for anyone who wants your BVN or bank login before a contract exists, or who only interviews on Telegram or WhatsApp text. Our page on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists more patterns.
Where the role can lead
An operations assistant role is a good first rung because you see how the whole business runs. People commonly move up to operations coordinator, project coordinator or operations manager, or sideways into specialist work such as finance operations, recruiting operations or customer success. Our operations manager career guide describes the senior end, and the planned article on growing from virtual assistant to operations manager covers the progression in detail. If you enjoy the reporting side more than the follow-ups, the planned guide to remote operations analyst jobs for beginners is the analytical route.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree to become a remote operations assistant?
Usually not. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry education for administrative assistants, and the operations assistant ads reviewed for this guide asked for skills rather than degrees. A degree can help with some employers, but a working sample tracker and clear written English matter more.
What is the difference between an operations assistant and a virtual assistant?
A virtual assistant mainly supports one person's inbox, calendar and tasks. An operations assistant supports a business process, such as orders, vendors or hiring pipelines, and is judged on accurate records and timely follow-ups. The skills overlap, so many people move from VA work into operations roles.
How much does a remote operations assistant earn in Nigeria?
There's no reliable published average for Nigeria-based remote operations assistants. One published remote ad (Sophilabs, 2026) offered $700 to $850 a month, roughly ₦953,000 to ₦1,158,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026). US-based admin assistants earned a median of $48,310 a year in May 2025, which is a benchmark rather than an expected offer.
Can I do an operations assistant job part-time?
Sometimes. Some small businesses hire part-time operations help, but many operations roles are full-time because the work runs alongside the team's whole day. If you need part-time hours, look for project-based ad hoc support or VA roles with a defined weekly hours cap.
Will I have to work at night?
Often, if the employer is in the US. From November 2026, a 9am to 5pm US Eastern shift is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. UK-based roles mostly fit Nigerian daytime hours, and Nigerian or African companies hiring remotely usually work on WAT.
What should I put in an operations assistant portfolio?
Put in one realistic tracker with status drop-downs and overdue highlighting, one written SOP and one short sample report, all about the same process. Share them as view-only links. Three connected documents show more skill than ten unrelated certificates.
Are operations assistant jobs on Telegram or WhatsApp safe?
Treat them with extra caution. Genuine employers can share links on these apps, but you should be able to trace the ad to a company website or a known job board. Never pay any fee or move money for a "recruiter".
Key takeaways
- A remote operations assistant keeps business processes and records accurate: trackers, follow-ups, invoices, SOPs and daily reports.
- Strong spreadsheet skills, clear written English and one project tool matter more than a degree.
- A small portfolio (tracker, SOP and report) replaces missing experience better than certificates do.
- Read every ad's location line first. Many "remote" operations roles are limited to one country.
- Pay varies widely. Published remote figures seen for this guide ranged from $700 a month, while US local medians are far higher and only a benchmark.
- Employers now ask about power and internet backup, so have a clear answer ready.
