Remote social media virtual assistant jobs are easiest to find in three places: job ads that list Nigeria, Africa or "worldwide" as eligible, VA staffing agencies that recruit from Africa, and freelance platforms where you pitch clients directly. The hard part is that many of these jobs aren't called "social media virtual assistant". They show up as general VA, marketing assistant, content assistant or community support roles, and a lot of the agencies posting them only hire from the Philippines, Latin America or South Africa.
This guide shows you which job titles to search, how to tell within a minute whether an ad accepts someone living in Nigeria, what pay looks like (local naira ads and offshore dollar ads, with sources), and how to put together an application that gets answered. We also cover the time-zone and power realities of US-hours social media work from Lagos or Enugu, and the red flags that turn up most in this corner of the job market.
Quick answer
To find a remote social media VA job from Nigeria, search several job titles at once ("social media assistant", "marketing VA", "content assistant", "community support"). Then filter for ads that list Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide, and confirm eligibility in the ad text itself. Apply with a short portfolio of real posts, Canva designs and a content calendar. Expect US working hours in most dollar-paying roles, and never pay to apply.
What a social media virtual assistant actually does
A social media virtual assistant (social media VA) handles the routine work behind a brand's social accounts, working remotely for a business owner, agency or marketing lead. A social media manager owns the strategy and results. The VA usually carries out the plan.
A typical week looks like this:
- scheduling posts in Meta Business Suite, Later, Buffer or Hootsuite
- designing graphics and carousels in Canva
- writing first-draft captions and hashtags
- replying to comments and DMs, and flagging complaints
- updating a content calendar in Notion, Trello, Asana or Google Sheets
- pulling simple weekly numbers (reach, saves, follower growth)
- researching trends, competitors and influencers
Real ads match this list closely. A Social Media Assistant ad from Wing, a VA staffing company, lists uploading content, managing daily interactions, building content calendars, writing captions, moderating reviews, researching influencers and supporting the ad manager (Wing job ad on Lever, checked October 2026).
Many ads mix social media with admin. A founder who wants "someone to post on Instagram, manage my inbox and book my calls" is hiring a social media VA, even if the ad says "general virtual assistant". For the wider role and skills path, see our virtual assistant career guide. If you want to grow into owning strategy, the social media manager career guide covers that step.
The job titles to search (most ads don't say "social media VA")
Searching only for "social media virtual assistant" misses most of the market. Employers use whatever title fits their org chart, so search these variations as well:
| Title used in ads | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Social media assistant | Closest match; scheduling, Canva, replies |
| Marketing virtual assistant | Social plus email, light ads support |
| Content assistant / content production assistant | Graphics, short video edits, posting |
| Community support / community assistant | Replies, moderation, DMs |
| General VA or executive assistant | Admin first, "social media updates" second |
| Social media coordinator | Slightly more senior; calendars and reporting |
When we opened DailyRemote's Nigeria VA page in October 2026, several listings tagged "social media" were titled "General Virtual Assistant", "Project & Administrative Support Virtual Assistant" or "Executive Assistant". The social media duties were buried in the description ("maintain social media activity", "social media updates"), and the company names were hidden (DailyRemote, VA jobs in Nigeria, checked October 2026). A job board can't show you a role your title search never matches.
Example (hypothetical): If you search a job board for "social media assistant" and get 6 results, run "marketing assistant", "content assistant" and "virtual assistant Instagram" as well. Then read only the ads whose duties list posting, Canva or community replies.
Where to find social media VA jobs open to Nigerians
There are four realistic sources. Each has a different level of pay, competition and risk.
1. Remote job boards with location filters
Job boards that show where applicants may live save you the most time. On WorkRemote, each listing on our remote jobs board shows the company, its website and where applicants may live, and the content and social media category groups these roles together. Global aggregators such as Remote Rocketship, Remotive and DailyRemote also have Nigeria or worldwide filters.
Treat an aggregator's filter as a starting point, not proof. When we opened Remote Rocketship's Nigeria social media page in October 2026, the results mixed several kinds of listing (Remote Rocketship, social media jobs in Nigeria, checked October 2026):
- Nigeria-only remote roles paid in naira
- "Anywhere in the World" roles that needed Dutch or German
- an entry-level internship whose apply link mentioned an unpaid trial
- a listing that turned out to be volunteer work
Read the original ad before you spend time on any of them.
2. VA staffing agencies (check which countries they hire from)
Staffing agencies find VAs for small businesses abroad, mostly in the US. They handle the contract and payroll, and you work for one client. They post constantly, which makes them the biggest source of social media assistant jobs. The catch is that many recruit only from named countries.
As of October 2026:
- Wing's careers page filters roles by India, Latin America, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United States, with no Africa option visible (Wing careers).
- Toplent's Social Media Virtual Assistant ad says it places professionals from Southeast Asia, Latin America and South Africa (Toplent job ad).
Neither lists Nigeria. Applying anyway usually gets you an automatic rejection, however good your portfolio is.
Some agencies do include Africa. On the Remote Rocketship page above, a staffing firm called Scale Army Careers had a "Content and Social Media Manager" ad ($1,400 to $1,800 a month) and a "Graphic Design, Social Media Specialist" ad ($1,100 a month). Both were listed for a small group of countries, and the aggregator showed Nigeria among them. We couldn't open the original ads, so check the current ad's country list before applying.
The habit to build: before applying to any agency, find its careers page or a current ad and look for the country list. If Nigeria, "Africa" or "worldwide" isn't there, move on.
3. Freelance marketplaces and direct pitching
Upwork, Fiverr and similar platforms let you sell social media VA services to clients worldwide. You need a profile, samples, and patience while you win your first reviews. Fees and the cost of bidding change, so check each platform's current help pages before signing up. Our guide on finding international VA clients covers pitching in detail.
Direct outreach also works for this role. Small brands with weak Instagram pages are easy to spot, and a short message showing one redesigned post often gets more replies than a cold CV.
4. Nigerian businesses hiring remote social media assistants
Local businesses hire remote social media assistants too, paid in naira. Pay is much lower, but competition is lighter and it's a fair way to build your first portfolio. As examples:
- OpportuNation advertised a part-time "Virtual Assistant (Social Media Manager)" role at ₦70,000 a month. It needed Canva samples, Facebook and Instagram ads experience, and evening availability from 8pm to midnight WAT. The ad was posted on 5 May 2026 and closed on 7 May 2026 (Jobnow listing).
- On the Remote Rocketship page, Nigeria-only remote social media roles ranged from ₦200,000 to ₦250,000 a month (a social media manager) up to ₦450,000 a month (a growth marketing manager covering SEO, email and social media), as of October 2026.
How to check whether a social media VA job accepts Nigerians
An ad accepts you only if the text says so, or says nothing that rules you out. Work through these checks in order, and stop at the first "no".
- Location line. Look for "Nigeria", "Africa", "EMEA" or "Worldwide/Anywhere". "Remote (US)" or "Remote (Philippines)" means those countries only. Our guide on what "worldwide remote" really means explains the edge cases.
- Description text. Phrases like "must be located in", "authorised to work in" or "apply only if you are located in" decide it. Wing runs separate US, India and Latin America versions of its Social Media Assistant ad for this reason.
- Agency country list. For staffing agencies, check their careers page as shown above.
- Hours. "US hours" or "graveyard shift" doesn't exclude you, but it decides your sleep (see the time-zone section below).
- Payment route. "Paid via Deel" or a named payroll platform is a good sign. Vague promises of "flexible payment options" are not.
If an ad passes all five, apply. If it's unclear, a one-line question to the recruiter ("Is this role open to candidates based in Nigeria?") is fine and saves you both time. Our guide on verifying whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents goes further.
What social media VA jobs pay: naira vs dollar roles
Pay splits sharply into two tiers. Local Nigerian ads mostly pay in the low hundreds of thousands of naira a month. Offshore agency roles paid in dollars can pay several times more, but they ask for more experience and US hours.
All figures below are from job ads, as of October 2026 unless stated. Naira equivalents use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). These are gross figures before any platform, transfer or tax deductions.
| Example ad (source) | Pay stated | Approx. naira or dollar value |
|---|---|---|
| Nigerian part-time social media VA, May 2026 (Jobnow) | ₦70,000 a month | about $51 |
| Nigeria-remote social media manager (Remote Rocketship) | ₦200,000 to ₦250,000 a month | about $147 to $184 |
| Wing Social Media Assistant, Latin America | $675 to $950 a month | about ₦919,000 to ₦1,294,000 |
| Agency social media specialist listed for Nigeria (Remote Rocketship) | $1,100 a month | about ₦1,498,000 |
| Agency content and social media manager listed for Nigeria | $1,400 to $1,800 a month | about ₦1,907,000 to ₦2,452,000 |
Two points to keep in mind:
- The Wing figures are for a Latin America-only role. We include them as a benchmark for what agencies pay offshore social media assistants, not as an offer open to Nigerians. Wing pays up to $675 for 1 to 3 years' experience, up to $785 for 3 to 5 years and up to $950 for 5 or more years (Wing job ad).
- Higher-paying roles usually want 2 or more years' experience and a portfolio. Beginners tend to start with naira clients, part-time VA work or low-priced freelance gigs.
For role-by-role pay, see our social media manager salary guide and our virtual assistant salary guide. Our planned article on social media jobs that pay in dollars covers higher-level roles.
What employers ask for (and how to show it)
Social media VA ads repeat the same requirements, and you can prepare for most of them before you apply.
Skills and tools that appear again and again
- Canva (sometimes Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator). The Wing ad lists Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. The OpportuNation ad wanted "strong Canva skills" shown through samples.
- Scheduling tools: Meta Business Suite, plus one of Later, Buffer or Hootsuite.
- Written English. Wing asks for at least B2 level, written and spoken.
- Basic analytics: reading reach and engagement and summarising them weekly. Toplent's ad asks for familiarity with social media analytics tools.
- Short-form video editing in CapCut or similar is increasingly common in "content assistant" ads.
Equipment and internet standards
Agency ads often state hardware rules. Wing's ad asks for:
- a noise-cancelling USB headset and a working webcam
- a computer with at least a 1.8 GHz processor and 4 GB RAM
- main internet of at least 25 Mbps
- backup internet of at least 10 Mbps
In Nigeria that backup line matters. Plan for two internet providers, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot, and an inverter, solar setup or generator so a NEPA outage doesn't cost you a scheduled post or a client call.
Certificates: helpful, not required
No ad we opened required a certificate. Meta runs a Community Management certification at beginner level and a Digital Marketing Associate certification, with free preparation courses and practice tests; the exams themselves are paid (Meta certification page, checked October 2026). Check the exam price on Meta's registration page before booking. A finished certificate can help when you have no client history, but a portfolio does more.
Building an application kit that gets replies
A social media VA application is judged mostly on visible work. A strong kit has four parts:
- A one-page CV focused on social media tasks, tools and numbers. "Scheduled 20 posts a week for a skincare brand; Instagram reach rose from X to Y" beats "social media enthusiast". See our guide to writing a virtual assistant CV.
- A portfolio link (Google Drive folder, Canva site or Notion page) with 6 to 10 designs, 3 caption samples, one content calendar and one before-and-after page audit. No clients yet? Build samples for real brands without claiming you worked for them. Our guide to building a VA portfolio shows how.
- A 60 to 90 second video, which some agencies ask for. Talk through one piece of work and say when you can work in the client's hours.
- A short, specific cover note that answers the ad's own questions.
Example (hypothetical) cover note:
"Hi Sarah, I'm a social media assistant based in Lagos (WAT, UTC+1), available 9am to 5pm US Eastern. I schedule in Meta Business Suite and Later and design in Canva. Here's a 7-day Instagram calendar I built for a bakery like yours, plus three carousel drafts: [link]. I've read the ad and I'm comfortable with the 2pm to 10pm Lagos shift. Happy to do a paid test task."
If you want someone on our team to rewrite your CV and optimise your LinkedIn profile for these roles, that's part of WorkRemote Premium's CV review.
Working US or UK hours from Nigeria
Most dollar-paying social media VA roles serve US clients, so the hours matter as much as the pay. Wing's ad mentions US working hours and asks applicants to be able to work a graveyard shift.
| Client hours | Lagos time now (late October 2026) | Lagos time from 1 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| UK, 9am to 5pm | 10am to 6pm | 10am to 6pm |
| US Eastern, 9am to 5pm | 2pm to 10pm | 3pm to 11pm |
| US Pacific, 9am to 5pm | 5pm to 1am | 6pm to 2am |
UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026, so London is now one hour behind Lagos until the end of March. US Eastern moves to winter time on 1 November 2026, which pushes an Eastern shift an hour later in Lagos. A part-time role (around 20 hours a week) on US Eastern hours fits around a day job or classes. A full-time Pacific role means working well past midnight, with your power backup on all night.
Social media work does allow some flexibility. Posts can be scheduled ahead, so some clients only need a few overlapping hours for replies and calls. Ask about overlap before you accept. Our guide to jobs suited to different time zones has more on this.
Red flags in social media VA job ads
Social media VA roles attract scammers because they're entry-friendly and popular with beginners. Watch for these signs:
- Pay that doesn't add up. One "Nigeria & West Africa" VA listing we opened in October 2026 showed a budget of $35 to $40 an hour while the description said $1,300 a month. That is an hourly rate several times higher than the monthly figure implies. The client was a new account with no hires (Remoworkers listing). A mismatch like that isn't proof of fraud, but slow down and ask questions.
- "Unpaid trial" or "volunteer" that runs for weeks. A short paid test task is normal. Weeks of free posting for a brand is free labour.
- Requests for money: training fees, "tool access" fees or "account activation". Applying is always free.
- Being asked to log into accounts with your own personal details, or to receive money and send it on.
- Hiring only on Telegram or WhatsApp, with no company website or named person you can check on LinkedIn.
Our full guide on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the wider patterns, and the planned guide on avoiding VA job scams focuses on this role.
Getting paid once you land the job
Agency roles often pay through payroll platforms such as Deel, or by bank transfer. Freelance clients pay through the marketplace or direct invoices. Either way you'll need a way to receive dollars and convert them sensibly. Our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares Grey, Raenest, Cleva, Payoneer, Wise and others.
Most social media VAs hired from Nigeria are independent contractors, not employees. You won't get leave or benefits unless the contract says so, and you handle your own tax. Read contractor vs employee for Nigerians and our remote work tax guide before you sign.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a social media virtual assistant job from Nigeria with no experience?
Yes, but usually not a dollar-paying agency role at first. Agencies such as Wing ask for one or more years' experience and a portfolio. Beginners do better starting with Nigerian small businesses, part-time VA roles or small freelance gigs, then using those results to apply for offshore roles. Our guide to remote jobs with no experience lists other beginner-friendly routes.
How much does a remote social media VA earn in Nigeria?
It depends mostly on whether the client is local or foreign. Nigerian ads we found ranged from ₦70,000 to about ₦450,000 a month. Offshore agency social media roles listed $675 to $1,800 a month (about ₦919,000 to ₦2,452,000 at ₦1,362 to $1, CBN rate of 23 October 2026). Not all of those offshore roles were open to Nigerians.
Is a social media virtual assistant the same as a social media manager?
No. A social media VA mainly carries out the plan: scheduling, designing, replying and reporting. A social media manager sets strategy, owns results and often manages ad budgets. Many people start as VAs and move up once they can show growth they produced.
Do I need a certificate to get hired?
No ad we reviewed required one. Employers ask for a portfolio, Canva skills and good written English. A Meta certification, such as Community Management, can support an application with no work history, but it won't replace samples of real posts and calendars.
Can I do social media VA work part-time while studying or working?
Yes. Part-time roles of around 20 hours a week are common, and posts can be scheduled ahead. Check the overlap hours first: a US Eastern role means afternoon and evening work in Lagos. Our guide for students and fresh graduates covers balancing remote work with school and NYSC.
Why do VA agencies keep rejecting my application?
Often because the agency doesn't recruit from Nigeria at all. Many list only the Philippines, Latin America, India or South Africa. Check the agency's careers page for its country list before you apply, and spend your effort on ads that name Nigeria, Africa or worldwide.
Are social media VA jobs posted on Telegram and WhatsApp real?
Some are, but these channels carry a high share of scams. Treat any job you only hear about on Telegram or WhatsApp as unverified until you find a company website, a named recruiter and an ad that doesn't ask you for money.
Key takeaways
- Search several job titles (social media assistant, marketing VA, content assistant, general VA), because social media work is often hidden inside broader ads.
- Many VA staffing agencies hire only from named countries that exclude Nigeria; check the country list before applying.
- Naira-paid local roles we found were mostly ₦70,000 to ₦450,000 a month; offshore dollar roles we found listed $675 to $1,800 a month but needed experience and US hours.
- A portfolio of designs, captions, a content calendar and a page audit matters more than certificates.
- Plan for US hours, backup power and a second internet connection, and never pay to apply.
Next steps
Start on the content and social media listings and read each listing's "where applicants may live" line before applying. Run a search such as "social media assistant" on the jobs board and click "Get email updates" to get new matching roles by email each day. Applying is always free. While you wait, build two portfolio pieces this week: a 7-day content calendar and three Canva carousels for a real brand you admire. Then read our virtual assistant interview questions before your first call.
