People practicing social integration workspace

Yes, you can do social science research remotely from Nigeria, but the openings are not spread evenly. Remote phone surveys, data analysis, qualitative coding, evaluation work and research consultancies are realistic. Most tenured academic posts and government research jobs abroad are not, because they usually require you to live in that country.

That split matters if you studied sociology, economics, psychology, political science, demography or geography. Search for remote social science research jobs and the first results are US job boards full of roles that ask for American residence or five or more years of experience. You can waste weeks on those.

This guide covers the research roles that can be done from Nigeria, who hires for them, the skills and software that appear in real ads, what the pay benchmarks mean for you, and a step-by-step way to get your first paid research project. Where we name an employer, it's because we opened their own ad or careers page in October 2026.

Quick answer

Remote social science research jobs open to Nigerians include phone survey enumerator, research assistant, quantitative research analyst, qualitative coder and transcriber, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) analyst, UX or market researcher, and freelance research consultant. Development research organisations, NGOs and market research firms hire for these most often, usually as contractors. Expect to need English, a statistics package such as Stata or R, survey tools such as SurveyCTO or ODK, and a quiet, powered workspace.

What counts as social science research work

Social science research is the systematic study of people and societies: how they behave, what they believe, how they live, and how policies and programmes affect them. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes sociologists as people who design research, collect and analyse data, publish findings and propose ways to address social problems.

In practice, paid social science research work falls into four stages, and every remote job sits somewhere in them:

  • Design: writing research questions, sampling plans, survey instruments and interview guides.
  • Data collection: running surveys (by phone, online or face to face), interviews and focus groups.
  • Analysis: cleaning data, running statistical models, coding interview transcripts.
  • Reporting: writing reports, briefs, dashboards and academic papers.

Data collection by phone, analysis and reporting move online easily. Face-to-face fieldwork does not, although Nigerian researchers are often hired locally for it. Design roles are usually held by senior staff, who may well be remote but are rarely entry-level.

Remote does not always mean "open to Nigeria"

A job can be remote and still closed to you. When you read a research vacancy, work out which of these it is:

  • Remote within one country: for example "Remote, US". You normally need the right to work there and an address there.
  • Remote within a region: "Remote, Africa", "EMEA" or "East or West Africa". Nigeria is often included, but check.
  • Remote with an office anchor: "Nairobi or remote" or "Dakar, remote considered". The employer prefers the office but may accept you.
  • Project-based contractor work: short contracts paid per day, per interview or per deliverable. This is where most Nigerians start.

For a longer explanation of these labels, see what "worldwide remote" really means for Nigerian applicants.

The main remote social science research roles

The table compares the roles you'll see most often. "Access from Nigeria" is our own assessment, based on the ads we opened and the usual hiring patterns in each area. It is a guide, not a rule.

RoleWhat you mostly doAccess from Nigeria
Phone survey enumeratorCall respondents, run structured surveys, enter dataGood, short contracts
Research assistantLiterature reviews, data entry, cleaning, adminGood for contract work
Quantitative research analystClean data, run models, build dashboardsGood with Stata, R or Python
Qualitative researcher or coderInterviews, transcripts, thematic codingModerate, often project-based
M&E analystTrack programme indicators, support evaluationsGood with NGOs and donors
UX or market researcherCustomer interviews, usability tests, surveysModerate, commercial firms
Research consultantLead a study or report end to endGood once you have a record
University faculty or government researcher abroadTeaching, publishing, official statisticsPoor, residence usually required

Phone survey enumerator: the most accessible entry point

A survey enumerator collects data by asking respondents a fixed set of questions and recording their answers exactly as given. Remote enumerators do this by phone.

60 Decibels, an impact measurement company, is one employer that hires this way. Its Survey Enumerator page (checked October 2026) describes the role as fully remote, with short-term contracts tied to its project pipeline. Contracts are usually based on daily targets for completed surveys, and pay is based on hours worked or interviews completed. The page lists no pay rates. Applicants need clear English, a stable phone, a laptop or computer, reliable internet and a quiet workspace. They apply through a webform, complete a mandatory online training course if shortlisted, and are then onboarded to specific projects.

The company says it hires globally, but its form shows which countries it is actively recruiting in. Nigeria is not named on the page, so enter your real country of residence and see what the form offers. Don't claim a country you don't live in to get past the filter: researchers check where respondents and enumerators are, and data integrity is the whole job.

Enumeration is irregular income, not a salary. Its value is the experience: survey protocols, consent scripts, data quality checks and a reference from a research organisation.

Research assistant

Remote research assistants support a lead researcher. The work covers literature searches, organising references, cleaning spreadsheets, transcribing, formatting reports and coordinating schedules. Academic research assistant roles, which are usually tied to a professor's grant, are covered in how to get a remote academic research assistant job. General non-academic research assistant work is covered in how to become a remote research assistant.

Quantitative research analyst

This is the role with the clearest route to steady remote pay. Analysts take survey or administrative data and turn it into findings.

Example (from a live ad, October 2026): Lafiya Nigeria advertised a full-time remote Data and Research Analyst role (posted 31 August 2026, deadline 11 October 2026, so now closed). Its mandatory requirements were:

  • a bachelor's degree in econometrics, statistics, data science, public health, economics or a related field
  • experience designing sampling strategies for evaluations
  • coding in R, Python or Stata
  • spreadsheet skills
  • professional English

It preferred a master's degree, SurveyCTO or ODK experience, DHIS2 data, SQL, Power BI or Tableau, and Hausa. The work included difference-in-differences models and analysis "rigorous enough for academic publication". Applicants faced an online application, a 20-minute quiz, a test task of one to three hours and a one-hour interview.

Two lessons from that ad apply widely. First, a social science degree alone wasn't enough: the coding and sampling skills were mandatory. Second, the pay line mixed a dollar sign and a naira sign, so the currency was unclear. Always confirm the currency and the gross figure in writing before you accept. Graduate-level analyst routes are covered in remote research analyst jobs for graduates. If you lean towards the data side, the remote data analyst career guide covers the technical skills in more depth.

Qualitative researcher and coder

Qualitative work means interviews, focus groups, open-ended responses and the slow job of coding transcripts into themes. Remote qualitative contracts often go to people who can interview in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Nigerian Pidgin or French as well as English, because the respondents are in Nigeria or West Africa. See how to become a remote qualitative researcher for the full route. If you are starting from transcription, the transcriptionist career guide explains that adjacent work.

Monitoring and evaluation (M&E)

Monitoring and evaluation means tracking whether a programme is doing what it promised (monitoring) and testing whether it caused the change it claims (evaluation). Donor-funded projects in Nigeria employ large numbers of M&E staff, and data review, dashboards and reporting are often remote or hybrid. The full role is covered in the remote monitoring and evaluation career guide.

UX and market research

Commercial companies hire social researchers under other names: user researcher, UX researcher, consumer insights analyst, market research analyst. The methods are the same (interviews, surveys, observation), applied to products and customers. Nigerian fintechs and global tech firms both hire for these roles. Some are on-site in Lagos, so check the location line. Start with the remote market research analyst guide and how to become a remote UX researcher.

Research consultant

Once you have led a few studies, you can bid for consultancies: a fixed-scope piece of research, such as a baseline survey, a literature review or an evaluation report, paid per deliverable or per day. NGOs and research institutes post these constantly. Getting there is covered in how to get a remote research consultant job. Policy-focused work for think tanks is in how to find remote policy research jobs, and health-focused studies are in remote public health research jobs.

Who hires remote social science researchers

Knowing the sectors tells you where to look and what to expect from each.

Employer typeTypical remote rolesWhat to expect
Development research organisationsEnumerator, analyst, associateOffice-anchored, some remote staff
NGOs and donor projectsM&E, research officer, consultantContracts, often Nigeria-based
Impact and market research firmsEnumerator, analyst, insightsProject pipeline, variable hours
Tech and product companiesUX researcher, insights analystHigher pay, fewer junior roles
Universities and think tanksResearch assistant, fellowGrant-funded, often fixed term
Governments abroadSocial researcher, statisticianUsually need residence or citizenship

African research institutes are worth watching, but read the location carefully. The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) careers page, checked in October 2026, listed researcher, research officer and post-doctoral roles in Nairobi and Senegal, with deadlines between late October and early November 2026. Several consultancies on the same page had no location stated. On-site posts are not remote jobs, but the consultancies and short research contracts these institutes run are often open to researchers elsewhere in Africa.

One more pattern: many international organisations hire Nigeria-based researchers precisely because the study is in Nigeria. A "remote" research role with a Nigerian programme can be a better first step than an anywhere-in-the-world role you are competing for with applicants from 80 countries.

Skills and software that appear in research job ads

Your degree gets you considered. These skills get you shortlisted.

Methods

  • Survey design and sampling (simple random, stratified, cluster sampling)
  • Questionnaire testing and consent procedures
  • Interviewing and focus group moderation
  • Thematic coding of qualitative data
  • Basic causal methods: randomised evaluations, difference-in-differences, regression

Software

TaskTools named in ads and common in the field
Statistical analysisStata, R, Python, SPSS, SAS
Mobile and phone data collectionSurveyCTO, ODK, KoboToolbox
Spreadsheets and dataExcel, Google Sheets, SQL
DashboardsPower BI, Tableau
Health programme dataDHIS2
Qualitative codingNVivo, ATLAS.ti, Dedoose

You don't need all of these. A realistic starter set is Excel, one statistics language (R is free; Stata needs a paid licence) and KoboToolbox or ODK, which you can practise with for free.

Writing and communication

Research is judged by its outputs. Being able to write a two-page brief for a non-specialist, or explain a confidence interval on a call with a donor in London, often matters more than an extra method. All the ads we reviewed required clear professional English.

How much remote social science research jobs pay

No published salary survey covers Nigeria-based remote social science researchers specifically, so we won't invent one. Here is what the official benchmarks show, and how to read them.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports these median annual pay figures for May 2025. They are US benchmarks for people employed in the US.

Occupation (US)Median pay, May 2025
Survey researchers$69,460 a year
Anthropologists and archaeologists$70,770 a year
Psychologists$99,110 a year
Sociologists$106,030 a year
Economists$124,720 a year
Political scientists$142,080 a year

Sources: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook pages for survey researchers and sociologists (the related occupation figures appear on the sociologists page).

For scale, the survey researcher median works out to about $5,790 a month, or about ₦7.9 million a month at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026, WorkRemote's house rate). A Nigeria-based contractor will almost never be offered that. Remote pay for people living in Nigeria is usually well below US local pay, because many employers set pay by location, and enumerator and assistant work is paid per interview, per hour or per day.

The BLS figures also show the education premium. BLS lists a master's degree as the typical entry qualification for survey researchers (a bachelor's can be enough for some entry-level roles) and for sociologists. BLS also projects survey researcher employment in the US to fall 5% between 2025 and 2035, with about 600 openings a year, which is a reminder that US survey jobs are a small, competitive market.

What moves your pay:

  • Role level: enumerator pay is the lowest; analysts and consultants earn more.
  • Technical skill: R, Python, Stata and causal methods raise rates.
  • Employer type: tech and product research usually pays more than NGO work.
  • Contract type: a day rate for a consultancy differs from a monthly employee salary with leave.
  • Location pricing: some employers pay one global band, most adjust by country.

Nigeria-specific things to sort out first

Time zones

Nigeria is on West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1) all year. From late October to March, London is one hour behind Lagos. US Eastern time is five hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026 and six hours behind after that. Phone surveys follow the respondents' hours, not yours: a study calling Kenyan respondents runs two hours ahead of Lagos, while one calling US respondents may push your shift into the evening.

Power, internet and a quiet room

Phone enumeration is unforgiving. A dropped call wastes a respondent's goodwill and can count against your daily target. Have inverter, solar or generator backup for your laptop and router. Keep a second connection, for example a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network. Find a room without a generator running outside the window, and use a headset with a decent microphone.

Respondent data and ethics

You'll handle personal information: names, phone numbers, health or income details. Follow the employer's data rules exactly. Don't store respondent data on a personal phone or share it on WhatsApp, and never fill in answers yourself to hit a target. Fabricated interviews are the fastest way to lose research work, because quality checks such as call-backs and audio audits are standard.

Contracts, payment and tax

Most remote research work from Nigeria is contractor work, so you invoice and pay your own tax. Read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you before signing. For getting dollars into Nigeria, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. For your obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, read tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

How to get your first remote research job: a step-by-step plan

  1. Pick a lane. Choose quantitative (analyst, M&E) or qualitative (interviews, coding) as your main track. You can learn both later, but your CV needs a clear focus.
  2. Learn one statistics language properly. R is free. Work through cleaning, merging, summary tables and a regression on a public dataset, such as Nigeria's Demographic and Health Survey data where access is granted.
  3. Practise data collection tools. Build a short survey in KoboToolbox or ODK, with skip logic and consent questions, and test it on friends.
  4. Produce two work samples. For example, a four-page analysis of a public dataset with charts, and a coded summary of five practice interviews (with consent and anonymised). Put them on a simple portfolio page or a GitHub repository.
  5. Apply for enumerator and assistant contracts. These are the realistic first rung. Finish the training modules properly: certification is often the gate to projects.
  6. Collect references and outputs. After each project, ask the coordinator for a short reference and note what you did in numbers (for example, "completed 240 phone surveys with a 3% error rate on audit"). Use your real figures only.
  7. Move up to analyst or consultant roles. Once you have a track record, apply for research analyst, M&E and associate roles, and start bidding for small consultancies.
  8. Consider a master's degree only with a plan. Many senior roles ask for one, but a funded programme or one paid for by an employer is far better than debt.

Example (hypothetical): Amaka has a BSc in Sociology. She spends three months learning R and KoboToolbox in the evenings, writes up an analysis of household survey data, and gets two short enumeration contracts. Six months later, with two coordinator references and a portfolio, she applies for M&E analyst roles on donor-funded projects in Nigeria and qualifies for interviews she couldn't have got with the degree alone.

Where to find remote social science research openings

  • Employer careers pages: development research organisations, impact measurement firms and research institutes post directly. Bookmark the ones in your area.
  • Africa-focused social impact boards: Afrorama lists NGO jobs, consultancies and research, fellowships and internships across African countries, with a "Remote only" filter.
  • WorkRemote.ng: the remote job listings at WorkRemote.ng are roles open to applicants living in Nigeria. Each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live. Search for "research", "survey" or "M&E".
  • LinkedIn: follow researchers at the organisations you want to work for. Coordinators often post enumerator calls before they reach job boards.

Common mistakes and scams to avoid

  • Applying to US-only roles. If the ad says "must reside in the US" or asks about US work authorisation, move on.
  • Confusing survey-taking with research jobs. Paid survey sites, where you answer questionnaires as a respondent, are not research jobs and don't build a career.
  • Paying for "research certification" to get hired. A genuine employer trains enumerators for free. Anyone charging a fee before giving you work is a red flag. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs.
  • Ignoring the currency line. As the Lafiya ad showed, pay lines can be ambiguous. Confirm the currency, the gross amount, how often you're paid and the payment method before you start.
  • A vague CV. "Conducted research" says nothing. Name the methods, tools, sample sizes and outputs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a remote social science research job with only a BSc?

Yes, at the entry level. Enumerator, research assistant and some analyst roles accept a bachelor's degree, especially when you can show Stata, R or Python skills. BLS lists a master's degree as the typical entry qualification for US survey researchers and sociologists, so expect senior roles to ask for one.

Are remote phone survey jobs legitimate?

Many are. Some impact and market research firms run real phone survey networks, and 60 Decibels describes its enumerator role as fully remote, paid by hours or completed interviews. Treat any "survey job" that charges you a fee, or pays you to answer surveys yourself, as something different from research work.

What is the best software to learn for social science research jobs?

Start with Excel plus one statistics language: R is free, while Stata is common in economics and evaluation ads but needs a paid licence. Then learn a mobile data collection tool such as KoboToolbox, ODK or SurveyCTO, which appeared in Nigerian research analyst ads we reviewed in October 2026.

How much do remote social science researchers earn in Nigeria?

No reliable published figure exists for Nigeria-based remote researchers, so be wary of any page that quotes one. US medians from BLS (May 2025) run from $69,460 a year for survey researchers to $142,080 for political scientists, but Nigeria-based contractors are usually paid well below US local rates.

Do I need to speak a Nigerian language?

Not always, but it helps. Studies with Nigerian respondents often need interviewers in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo or Pidgin, and one remote analyst ad we reviewed listed Hausa as an advantage. Every international ad we opened required clear English.

Is a social science research career different from a data analyst career?

Yes, though they overlap. A research career centres on study design, sampling, interviews and interpreting findings about people and programmes. A data analyst career centres on business data and reporting. Many researchers move between the two because the statistics and coding skills carry over.

Can I work for a foreign government's research team from Nigeria?

Rarely. Government social research and official statistics roles abroad usually require residence or citizenship in that country. Consultancies commissioned by those governments, through contracted research firms, are more realistic.

Key takeaways

  • Remote social science research jobs open to Nigerians are mostly enumerator, assistant, analyst, qualitative, M&E, UX or market research, and consultant roles, usually on contracts.
  • Faculty posts and government research jobs abroad usually require you to live in that country, so check eligibility before applying.
  • Statistics software (R, Stata or Python) and survey tools (KoboToolbox, ODK, SurveyCTO) matter as much as your degree.
  • BLS US medians (May 2025) range from $69,460 to $142,080 a year by field, but Nigeria-based contractors are typically paid well below these.
  • Phone enumeration is the most accessible first rung. Reliable power, a backup connection and a quiet room are essential.
  • Never pay to be hired, and confirm the currency and payment terms in writing.

Next steps

Pick your lane (quantitative or qualitative), build two work samples this month, and start applying for enumerator and research assistant contracts. Search the WorkRemote.ng remote jobs board for "research" or "M&E", and use "Get email updates" after your search to receive a free daily digest of new matching roles. If your CV still reads like a dissertation abstract, a CV and LinkedIn rewrite from the WorkRemote team is part of Premium (₦29,999 a month), and it can recast your research projects as the methods, tools and outputs employers look for.
