From Nigeria, the most realistic way to get a remote academic research assistant job is to work on projects run by researchers, NGOs and think tanks that pay contractors, not to apply for staff posts at foreign universities. Most of these jobs come through people: lecturers with grants, their collaborators abroad, and research organisations that advertise short contracts on Nigerian job boards.

That's less glamorous than the "UN is hiring remote research assistants at $4,500 a month" posts on social media. It's also how the work actually reaches people. This guide explains what academic research assistants do, which roles are open to applicants in Nigeria and which aren't, the skills that get you shortlisted, what pay looks like, and how to write to a professor so they reply. We also cover a trap that catches a lot of Nigerian graduates: "research assistant" ads that turn out to be thesis-writing gigs.

Quick answer

To get a remote academic research assistant job from Nigeria, you need a good degree (often a master's or ongoing postgraduate study), proof that you can review literature and handle data, and a basic research ethics certificate. Apply to contract roles at Nigerian and African research organisations, and email lecturers and principal investigators whose grant-funded projects match your field. Staff research assistant posts at foreign universities usually need the right to work in that country.

What a remote academic research assistant actually does

An academic research assistant (RA) supports a principal investigator (PI), the person who leads a research project and usually holds the grant. The PI might be a lecturer, a professor, a postdoctoral researcher or a programme lead at a think tank. The RA does the groundwork that turns a research question into evidence.

Remote RA work usually involves several of these tasks:

  • Literature reviews: searching Google Scholar and university databases, screening papers, summarising findings and keeping a reference library in Zotero or Mendeley.
  • Data collection: running telephone or video interviews, administering survey questionnaires on tools like KoboToolbox or ODK, and recruiting participants.
  • Data management: entering, cleaning and coding data in Excel, SPSS, Stata or R.
  • Qualitative work: transcribing interviews, coding transcripts and pulling out themes, often in NVivo or Atlas.ti.
  • Drafting: writing background sections, methods notes, policy briefs or slide decks for the PI to edit.
  • Admin: tracking citations, organising shared drives, taking notes in team meetings and preparing ethics application paperwork.

As a real example, a September 2026 ad from The Sahara Centre, a Lagos-based non-profit, lists literature review, data collection, basic data cleaning, drafting sections of research outputs, tracking sources and citations, and joining virtual check-ins with the project lead. Most remote academic RA jobs look like that.

Academic research assistant vs other research jobs

The title "research assistant" is used loosely online, so check which kind of job you're reading about.

RoleWho you work forTypical output
Academic research assistantA PI, university or research instituteLiterature reviews, cleaned datasets, draft papers
NGO or think-tank research assistantA policy or development organisationField data, reports, policy briefs
Business research assistantA company or entrepreneurMarket research, lead lists, competitor notes
Research analystUsually a firm, with more independenceAnalysis and recommendations

This guide covers the first two rows. For business and general online research work, see how to become a remote research assistant. If you want more independence and analysis, read about remote research analyst jobs for graduates.

Which remote research assistant jobs Nigerians can actually get

Not every remote research assistant vacancy you find is open to you. The type of contract usually decides it.

Roles that are usually open to applicants in Nigeria

  • Contracts with Nigerian and African research organisations. These organisations hire remotely across Nigeria, and sometimes from anywhere. The Sahara Centre ad says applicants can be based anywhere, including outside Lagos or Nigeria, as long as they can join check-ins during Lagos hours (as of October 2026, posted 9 September 2026 with no deadline given).
  • Grant-funded projects run by Nigerian academics. Lecturers with external or institutional grants often hire RAs as short-term contractors. These posts are rarely advertised widely.
  • Projects run by foreign academics who study Nigeria or West Africa. A researcher in the UK or US studying Nigerian elections, health systems or agriculture often needs someone who knows the context, speaks the languages and can reach respondents. They usually pay through the project budget as a consultancy or contractor fee.
  • Freelance research support on platforms such as Upwork, where you contract directly with a researcher. Read the academic integrity section below before taking any of it.

Roles that are usually closed to you

  • Staff RA posts at foreign universities. A US, UK or Canadian university hiring an RA onto its payroll usually needs that person to have the right to work in the country, even if the job is advertised as "remote". Many of the listings that fill Glassdoor and Indeed searches for "remote research assistant" are like this.
  • Country-restricted remote roles. A South African recruitment firm advertised a remote research assistant role for a UK-based team that was open only to applicants in South Africa and worked on South African time. "Remote" and "Africa" in the same listing does not mean Nigeria is included. That ad was closed when we checked in October 2026.

For a fuller explanation of location limits, see why some remote jobs are not available to Nigerians.

Check eligibility before you apply

Look for these four things in any ad:

  1. Where applicants may live. Look for "worldwide", "Africa", "Nigeria" or "anywhere", and check the small print for a country list.
  2. Whether you'd be an employee or a contractor. Contractor and consultancy roles are the ones Nigeria-based people usually get. Our guide to contractor vs employee arrangements explains what each means for you.
  3. Whether the role is paid. Some research organisations use unpaid volunteer RAs (more on this below).
  4. Which time zone the meetings are in.

Qualifications and skills that get you shortlisted

Degree level

Academic RA roles ask for more education than most remote entry-level jobs. The Sahara Centre ad wants a recent master's degree or PhD candidacy in a relevant field, and says strong candidates with a First Class or Second Class Upper bachelor's degree may be considered. That's typical. A good first degree can get you in, especially on data collection and transcription-heavy projects, but a master's opens more doors.

If you're still an undergraduate, your best route is your own department: final-year project supervisors and postgraduate lecturers often need help, and that experience goes on your CV.

Core skills, and how to prove each one

SkillProof a PI will accept
Literature searching and synthesisA 2 to 4 page review on a topic in your field, with a proper reference list
Reference managementA shared Zotero library or a correctly formatted bibliography
Quantitative data handlingA cleaned dataset and short do-file or R script on GitHub
Qualitative codingA coded sample transcript with a simple codebook
Survey and interview fieldworkPast fieldwork, NYSC community projects or survey supervision
Academic writingYour thesis abstract, a published paper or a conference poster

Two tools are worth learning first because they're free: Zotero for references and R for data. Stata, SPSS and NVivo are widely used in Nigerian universities and research firms, so mention them if you know them.

If your quantitative side is weak and you want to build it, our data analyst career guide lists courses and tools. If transcription is your way in, see the transcriptionist career guide.

A research ethics certificate

Any project involving human participants (surveys, interviews, health data) has to follow informed consent and confidentiality rules. A PI is more comfortable hiring you if you already have basic ethics training.

TRREE (Training and Resources in Research Ethics Evaluation) is a good place to start. It's an e-learning programme on the ethics of health research involving people, started by African, European and Swiss partners. As of October 2026, access to the modules is free. You earn a certificate for modules 1 to 3 (Introduction to Research Ethics, Research Ethics Evaluation, and Informed Consent) by scoring 70% on the first attempt. The only fee, 58 Swiss francs for the Good Clinical Practice and Swiss framework certificates, applies only to participants from high-income economies, so it doesn't apply to Nigeria-based learners. TRREE also offers regulatory framework courses for several African countries.

Put the certificate on your CV with the module names and the date. It costs nothing and quickly shows you understand consent and confidentiality.

Practical setup

PIs hire remote RAs to save time. They don't want to chase missed calls. Before you apply, make sure you have:

  • A laptop that can run your analysis software and keep several papers and a reference manager open.
  • Backup power (an inverter or solar setup) for long transcription and data-entry sessions.
  • Two ways to get online, such as a router plus a MiFi or phone hotspot, especially if you'll run phone or video interviews.
  • A quiet place for interviews. Background noise ruins recordings you'll later have to transcribe.

Where to find remote academic research assistant jobs

1. Your own network first

Most academic RA work is never advertised. Start with:

  • Lecturers who supervised you or taught your postgraduate courses.
  • Your department's research groups and centres.
  • Researchers whose papers you cited in your thesis, especially those still working on the same topic.
  • Conference and seminar contacts, including online seminars run by African research networks.

2. Nigerian job boards for research contracts

Research organisations, NGOs and think tanks post short RA contracts on Nigerian job boards. Both real examples in this guide came from them: The Sahara Centre on MyJobMag, and the Voices and Evidence Frontiers volunteer role on Hot Nigerian Jobs. Search for "research assistant", "research associate", "enumerator" and "data collector", and add "remote".

3. Organisation careers pages

Development research firms, policy think tanks, university research institutes and international NGOs with Nigerian programmes all hire RAs and research associates. Make a list of 15 to 20 organisations working in your field and check their careers pages each week. Our guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages shows how to do this efficiently.

4. Remote job boards that show location rules

On WorkRemote's job listings, each listing shows where applicants may live, so you can rule out country-locked roles before you spend time on a cover letter. Search "research" and filter by category and experience level.

5. Freelance platforms, with care

Upwork and similar platforms carry legitimate research support contracts: literature searches, data cleaning, transcription and survey programming for academics and consultants. They also carry a lot of requests to write someone's dissertation. See the next section before you bid on anything.

The academic integrity trap: research assistance vs thesis writing

This matters more in Nigeria than most guides admit. Many "research assistant" ads and WhatsApp offers are really asking you to write a student's project, thesis or coursework for them to submit as their own. That is contract cheating, not research assistance. It breaks university rules here and abroad, and it can follow your name.

Here's a simple test:

Legitimate RA workContract cheating
Your work feeds a project a researcher leads and signsYour work is submitted for a grade by someone else
Your contribution is acknowledged, or covered by a contractYou're asked to stay invisible and "write in my voice"
You find and summarise sources for the PI to interpretYou write the full chapter or essay
The client is a researcher, NGO or firmThe client is a student with a deadline

Legitimate academic editing exists too, but it has its own rules. Our guide to remote academic editing jobs explains where the line is.

How much remote academic research assistants earn

Pay for remote RA work done from Nigeria is not published in any official dataset, so treat any figure you see online with suspicion unless it comes from the actual vacancy.

US benchmark (not what you'll be offered): The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median annual wage of $56,400 for social science research assistants in May 2023 ($27.11 an hour), with the 10th percentile at $37,080 and the 90th percentile at $96,720. In colleges, universities and professional schools, the mean was $58,930 a year. These are wages for people employed in the US. A Nigeria-based contractor on a project budget is usually paid much less.

What Nigeria-based RAs see in practice:

  • Many Nigerian research organisations don't publish pay. The Sahara Centre asks applicants to state their salary expectations.
  • Some roles are unpaid. Voices and Evidence Frontiers advertised a volunteer remote research assistant role in August 2026 for a feasibility study in Northeast Nigeria. Volunteers ran telephone interviews, transcribed recordings and cleaned data, and received only incentives for communication and approved transport costs. It needed a relevant bachelor's degree and previous survey or research experience. The listing has since closed.
  • Foreign-funded projects often pay a daily or hourly consultancy rate in dollars or pounds. The rate depends on the grant budget, your qualifications and the tasks.

Example (hypothetical): a UK-based PI offers you $12 an hour for 60 hours a month of literature screening and data cleaning. That's $720 a month, about ₦981,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). This is an illustration of the maths, not a market rate. Ask for the rate in writing before you start.

Should you accept an unpaid research assistant role?

Sometimes, if it has firm limits. An unpaid role can be worth it if it's short (a few weeks), has defined tasks, covers your data and transport costs, and gives you something concrete in return: a named acknowledgement, a reference letter or co-authorship where your contribution justifies it. Turn it down if it's open-ended, if it's the same work paid staff do elsewhere, or if anyone asks you to pay for "training" or "onboarding". That last one is a scam. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the other warning signs.

Getting paid from abroad

If a foreign PI pays you, their university's finance office usually decides how: a bank wire to a domiciliary account, Wise, Payoneer or a platform payment. Agree the method before you start work, because university finance offices can be slow and rigid. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and their fees. Contractor income from abroad may also be taxable here. See tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

How to apply: step by step

  1. Choose a field and stick to it. "I'll research anything" reads as no experience. "Health systems research with survey data" reads as someone a PI can use.
  2. Build three pieces of proof. A short literature review, a cleaned dataset with code, and your TRREE certificate. Put them in one Google Drive folder or a simple portfolio page.
  3. Rewrite your CV for academia. Lead with education, thesis title, methods and software, then research experience (including NYSC surveys or departmental projects), then publications or presentations. Keep it to two pages. Our guide to writing a CV for international remote jobs covers the format.
  4. List 20 target PIs and organisations. Use Google Scholar to find researchers publishing on your topic in Nigeria or West Africa in the past three years.
  5. Send short, specific emails. See the template below. Send no more than five a day so each one is tailored.
  6. Apply to advertised contracts in parallel. Follow each ad's instructions exactly. The Sahara Centre, for example, asks for a letter of interest, your preferred contract length, salary expectations and a CV by email.
  7. Follow up once after 7 to 10 days. One polite line, then move on.
  8. Prepare for a practical test. PIs often ask you to summarise a paper, clean a small dataset or code a transcript. Do it carefully and on time, because that's the job.

Example (hypothetical): a cold email to a researcher

Subject: Research assistance for your work on primary healthcare in Northern Nigeria

Dear Dr Okafor,

I read your 2025 paper on community health worker retention in Kano and found your finding on stipend delays especially useful for my own MSc thesis on the same topic (University of Ibadan, 2026).

I'm a Lagos-based public health graduate with experience in Stata, KoboToolbox survey design and qualitative coding in NVivo. I hold TRREE certificates in research ethics and informed consent, and I speak Hausa and Yoruba.

If any of your current projects need remote support with literature reviews, data cleaning or phone interviews, I'd be glad to help on a contract basis. I've attached my CV and a two-page literature review sample.

Kind regards, Amaka Bello

The researcher, paper and applicant in this email are invented. Notice what it does: it shows you've read their work, states specific skills and languages, offers defined tasks and attaches proof. Keep yours under 150 words.

Working hours and time zones

Remote RA work is flexible, but meetings aren't. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year:

  • Nigerian organisations: check-ins during Lagos working hours.
  • UK researchers: London is one hour behind Lagos in winter (GMT, since 25 October 2026) and on the same time in summer.
  • US researchers: US Eastern is 5 hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026, then 6 hours behind. A 10am meeting in New York is 4pm in Lagos in winter.
  • Fieldwork calls: if you're phoning respondents in Nigeria for a foreign project, your calling hours follow Nigerian time even if your PI is abroad.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying to US university payroll posts. They usually need US work authorisation. Spend that time on contracts you can actually take.
  • Sending a generic CV. Academic hiring rewards methods and evidence, not a list of soft skills.
  • Promising skills you can't demonstrate. If you list Stata, expect a test in Stata.
  • Taking thesis-writing work because it's labelled "research". See the integrity table above.
  • Starting without terms in writing. Rate, hours, deliverables, payment method and whether you'll be acknowledged should all be agreed in an email at minimum.
  • Mishandling data. Never share participants' names, phone numbers or recordings outside the project's approved storage. A single breach can end your reputation with a PI.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a remote research assistant job without a master's degree?

Yes, but it's harder. Many academic RA ads ask for a master's or PhD candidacy, though some, like The Sahara Centre's, will consider a strong First Class or Second Class Upper bachelor's. Fieldwork, transcription and data-entry roles more often accept a good first degree with survey experience.

Do remote academic research assistants get paid in dollars?

Sometimes. Projects funded by foreign universities or international donors often pay contractors in dollars or pounds. Nigerian organisations usually pay in naira. Confirm the currency and payment method before you start.

Can a Nigerian work as a remote research assistant for a foreign university?

Yes, usually as a contractor on a specific project rather than as a university employee. Staff posts on a foreign university's payroll generally need the right to work in that country, so look for consultancy or contractor arrangements through a PI's grant.

Is helping students write their projects the same as research assistant work?

No. Writing a project, thesis or essay that a student submits as their own is contract cheating, and it breaks university rules. Legitimate research assistance supports a project led and signed by a researcher or organisation.

Do I need a research ethics certificate?

It isn't always required, but it helps a lot on any project involving human participants. TRREE's online modules are free, and certificates for modules 1 to 3 are free to earn for learners in Nigeria (as of October 2026).

Can undergraduates become remote research assistants?

Yes, mostly through their own department. Ask project supervisors and postgraduate lecturers whether they need help with literature searches or data entry. Our guide to remote jobs for Nigerian students lists other options that fit around classes.

What's the difference between this and a remote research consultant?

A research assistant supports a PI's project. A research consultant usually leads a piece of work independently and is paid for the result. Most people move from RA to consultant after a few projects. See how to get a remote research consultant job.

Key takeaways

  • From Nigeria, most remote academic research assistant work comes as contracts with research organisations or grant-funded PIs, not staff posts at foreign universities.
  • Read every ad for where applicants may live: "remote" and even "Africa" can still exclude Nigeria.
  • A good degree, three pieces of proof (literature review, cleaned dataset, ethics certificate) and a clear field of focus get you shortlisted.
  • TRREE's research ethics modules are free, and so are the certificates for modules 1 to 3 for Nigeria-based learners.
  • Pay is rarely published. US figures from the BLS are a benchmark, not an offer, and some Nigerian roles are unpaid.
  • Writing students' theses is contract cheating, not research assistance.
