You get a remote research consultant job by winning short contracts, not by applying for a permanent post. You do it with a specialism, proof of past research outputs and a sharp proposal that includes a fee. The most realistic sources for someone based in Nigeria are UN agencies, international NGOs, think tanks and research firms that hire "home-based" consultants, plus expert networks that pay professionals for one-off calls.

This guide explains how remote research consultant jobs actually work: what clients mean by "home-based" and "international consultant", what qualifications they ask for, how the technical and financial proposal works, and what the fees look like. It is written for Nigerians with research, M&E, market research or academic experience who want foreign contracts without relocating. If you are earlier in your career, the guide also shows the realistic route in, because very few consultancies go to people with no track record.

Quick answer

A remote research consultant is an independent contractor hired for a defined piece of research, such as a study, evaluation, literature review or data analysis. You are paid against deliverables, usually through a daily or total fee. From Nigeria, the main sources are home-based UN and NGO consultancies, global research firms and expert networks. Most ask for a relevant degree (often a master's), several years of research experience and evidence of published or client-facing work.

What a remote research consultant actually does

A research consultant is brought in to answer a specific question for a client within a fixed time. The question might be "what skills do young job seekers in West Africa need?", "how did this programme perform?" or "how do small retailers in Lagos pay suppliers?". You design or refine the method, collect or analyse data, and deliver a report, a slide deck or a dataset.

The work is usually written into a terms of reference (ToR). That is the document setting out the purpose, tasks, deliverables, timeline and required qualifications. Payment is often tied to each deliverable being accepted, not to hours logged in a chat app.

The main types of remote research consultancy

TypeTypical clientsTypical output
Development and policy researchUN agencies, NGOs, think tanksStudies, evaluations, policy briefs
Data and statistical supportResearch institutes, UN bodiesCleaned datasets, analysis, charts
Market and customer researchResearch firms, startups, brandsSurvey results, interview insights
Expert callsExpert networks serving investorsPaid one-hour calls, survey answers
Academic research supportUniversities, journals, authorsLiterature reviews, coding, analysis

Each segment has a neighbour in our series. If you want a salaried junior role rather than contracts, see remote research analyst jobs for graduates. If you are a postgraduate looking for paid work on someone else's study, see how to get a remote academic research assistant job. Evaluation-heavy work overlaps with remote monitoring and evaluation jobs.

Consultant, employee or freelancer: why the label matters

A research consultant is almost always an independent contractor. UN agencies are explicit about this. A UNICEF consultancy ad on Impactpool (an older 2017 posting, but its terms are typical of UN individual contracts) states that contractors work in a personal capacity, not as staff. They must arrange their own life and health insurance, and the agency accepts no liability for taxes on their fees.

That has three practical effects for someone in Nigeria:

  • You don't get paid leave, pension or health cover unless you build them into your fee.
  • You are responsible for your own tax. Our guide to tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains how that works under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
  • You can hold several consultancies at once, as long as timelines and conflicts of interest allow.

If a client offers you a salaried contract through an employer of record instead, read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you before you sign.

Can you get remote research consultant jobs from Nigeria?

Yes, but only for consultancies whose location rules include Nigeria. Read the location line and the eligibility notes in every ad before you spend hours on a proposal.

Research consultancies tend to be friendlier to Nigeria-based applicants than salaried remote jobs. Contractors don't need a local payroll, and many clients actively want people who know West African contexts. The ads still vary a lot, and the wording tells you who can apply.

How to read the location line on a consultancy ad

Wording in the adWhat it usually means for you
Home-basedWork from your own location, but check if a country is named
Remote, with a list of countriesOnly residents of those countries qualify
National consultantUsually for nationals or residents of the duty-station country
International consultantOpen to applicants from other countries
City name plus "Remote"Remote work allowed, the city is the administrative base
Remote with travelFieldwork trips expected, check who pays

Here are three real examples, each checked in October 2026:

  • A country list that included Nigeria. A Research Consultant contract posted for data.org on the Fast Forward tech nonprofit job board (opened October 2026; the role closed on 21 March 2025) was remote "within Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Senegal". It asked for 3+ years of applied research on inclusive digital economies, qualitative and ethnographic skill, and a publication record. Ads like this are the clearest signal that Nigeria-based consultants are wanted.
  • A city plus remote. As of October 2026, the UNIDIR Research Consultant (Managing Exits from Armed Conflict) ad lists its location as "Geneva, Remote". It is a six-month UN consultancy starting January 2027, with a total fee capped at $9,000 and a deadline of 2 November 2026. It lists research or work experience in Nigeria, Niger, Chad or Cameroon as beneficial.
  • National-only consultancies. On the UNICEF careers vacancies page, checked on 27 October 2026, a consultant post in Enugu was open to national consultants only. Other consultancies on the same page were listed as remote or desk-based for countries such as Uzbekistan and Costa Rica. The label decides who qualifies, so read it before anything else.

Treat these as illustrations, not open invitations. Eligibility changes from one ad to the next, so always check the live ad.

Where Nigerian location knowledge becomes an advantage

Many international studies need people who understand Nigerian states, languages, informal markets, health systems or security conditions. If you have run surveys in Kano, interviewed traders in Onitsha or worked on a Lagos State programme, put that front and centre. A consultant in Geneva or London cannot easily replace that kind of context.

What clients ask for: qualifications and skills

Remote research consultancies are rarely entry-level. The ads above show the usual pattern: a relevant degree (often a master's, or a bachelor's plus extra years of experience), a few years of applied research, and evidence of specific methods or tools.

The UNIDIR ad is a good example of how specific the requirements get. It asks for:

  • a master's in international relations, political science, economics, statistics or a quantitative social science, or a bachelor's plus two years of relevant experience
  • five years of applied research, statistics or public-policy data analysis (desirable)
  • proficiency in R and statistical methods including multivariate regression
  • Power BI, Stata, SPSS or similar, plus experience with large surveys such as SurveyCTO
  • fluent written and spoken English

Skills clients pay for and how to prove them

SkillHow to prove it in an application
Research designA ToR or inception report you wrote
Qualitative methodsInterview guides, coded transcripts, a short sample analysis
Quantitative analysisPublic R or Stata scripts, a published table or dashboard
Survey toolsForms built in SurveyCTO, KoboToolbox or ODK
WritingA report, brief or journal article with your name on it
Data protectionHow you de-identified and stored data on past studies
Presenting findingsA slide deck or webinar you delivered

Writing is the skill that decides most shortlists. Almost every ToR ends with a report, brief or deck. If your sample outputs are clear, well structured and free of padding, you are already ahead of many applicants. Note one line in the UNIDIR ad: it says applications generated with AI will not be processed. Write your own proposal.

Do you need a PhD?

No, not for most consultancies. A PhD helps for academic reviews and some think-tank work. A master's plus a strong record of outputs is enough for many development and market research contracts, and some ads accept a bachelor's with extra years of experience. Your track record matters more than your title.

How to become a remote research consultant: the realistic path

Most people become research consultants after working inside research for a few years, not straight from school. Here is a path that works from Nigeria.

  1. Get research experience in a salaried or assistant role first. Good starting points are research assistant posts at universities, M&E roles at NGOs, analyst roles at market research firms and data roles at fintechs. Our guide to becoming a remote research assistant covers the first step.
  2. Pick a niche you can defend. "Research" is too broad. "Qualitative research on youth employment and digital skills in West Africa" or "health survey data analysis in R" gives clients a reason to choose you.
  3. Build a portfolio of outputs. Collect reports, briefs, datasets, code and slide decks you can share. If the work was confidential, write a one-page anonymised summary of the method and results, and check you're allowed to share it.
  4. Publish something under your name. A working paper, blog post on a think-tank site, conference paper or journal article gives clients something to verify.
  5. Start with smaller contracts. Literature reviews, transcript coding, data cleaning and short desk studies are easier to win and build references.
  6. Collect referees as you go. UN ads routinely ask for two or three references. Ask each client for permission to list them before the contract ends.
  7. Move up to lead consultant roles. Once you have three to five completed contracts, apply for consultancies where you design the study and write the final report.

If your strength is analysing data, our data analyst career guide covers the tools. If it's consumer and market studies, see the market research analyst career guide.

Where to find remote research consultancies

Search the places where consultancies are actually advertised. General remote job boards carry few of them.

  • UN agency career sites. UNICEF, UNDP and other agencies post consultancies on their own careers pages. On the UNICEF vacancies page checked on 27 October 2026, several consultancies were marked remote, home-based or desk-based. Filter by "consultancy" and read each ToR.
  • Research institutes' own sites. UNIDIR posts its consultancies directly, with application by email.
  • Development job boards. ReliefWeb, Devex and similar boards collect NGO and donor consultancies. Search with words like "home-based", "remote" and "Nigeria", and check the closing date before reading further, because many listings stay indexed after they close.
  • Nonprofit and tech-for-good boards. The Fast Forward board carried the data.org research consultancy mentioned above.
  • Expert networks. These connect professionals with investors and consultancies for short paid calls (more below).
  • Your own network. Many consultancies go to people a programme manager already knows, so stay visible to past colleagues, supervisors and co-authors.
  • WorkRemote.ng. Our remote job listings show where applicants may live for every role. Search "research" and filter by job type.

Expert networks: paid calls instead of full projects

Expert networks pay professionals for their industry knowledge, mostly through one-hour calls with investors and consultancies. According to GLG's expert network page (checked October 2026), you submit a profile through the website or the GLG for Experts app, complete a mandatory compliance tutorial, sign a standard agreement and set your own hourly rate. After that, GLG's teams search your profile for matching client requests. Engagements include calls, surveys, events and advisory roles.

This route suits people with deep sector experience, such as a former bank operations manager, a telecoms engineer or a pharmaceutical distributor. Calls are irregular, so treat this as extra income, not a salary. You must also never share confidential information from a current or past employer. The compliance training exists for that reason.

How to apply: the technical and financial proposal

A consultancy application is a small bid, not just a CV. Most ads ask for some combination of a cover letter or technical proposal, a CV, references and a financial proposal.

UN ads are the most detailed. The 2017 UNICEF consultancy ad on Impactpool asked for a cover letter, a daily rate in US dollars, a CV, at least two references and a statement of availability. It warned that applications without a dollar daily rate would not be considered. That ad scored the financial proposal at 50 points and the technical side at 50, with fees judged on "best value for money". Current ads differ in detail, so follow the template in the ad you are answering. The UNIDIR ad, for instance, asks for a cover letter, a CV or UN Personal History Profile, and three referees, sent by email with a fixed subject line.

What goes into a strong technical proposal

Keep it short and specific to the ToR. Two to four pages is usually enough unless the ad says otherwise.

  • Your understanding of the assignment in your own words, including one risk or gap you spotted in the ToR.
  • Method: sampling, data sources, tools, ethics and data protection.
  • Work plan: a week-by-week timeline that matches the deliverables.
  • Relevant experience: two or three past assignments that look like this one, with outputs named.
  • Availability: start date and the number of days you can commit.

Setting a daily rate

Your fee should cover the days the work really takes, plus the costs a contractor carries: internet, power backup, software licences, health cover and tax. Under-quoting can lose you the contract just as easily as over-quoting, because evaluators read a very low fee as a sign you don't understand the scope.

Example (hypothetical): a 20-day desk review and report quoted at $250 a day comes to $5,000. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦6,810,000 before your own tax and transfer costs. This rate is purely an illustration of the arithmetic, not a market average. Research what the client has paid before (some ads state a budget cap) and price against your experience.

When an ad states a cap, work back from it. The UNIDIR consultancy caps the total at $9,000 for six months of hourly work, which is about ₦12,258,000 at the same house rate. That tells you it's a part-time support role, not a full-time salary.

Example (hypothetical): a cover email for an emailed consultancy application

Subject: Application: [exact subject line from the ad]

Dear Recruitment Team,

Please find attached my application for the Research Consultant (Data Support) role: cover letter, CV and three referees. I am a Lagos-based quantitative researcher with six years of survey analysis in R and Stata, including two SurveyCTO household surveys in north-east Nigeria. I am available from January 2027 and work on West Africa Time, which is the same as Geneva time in winter.

Kind regards, [Name]

How much do remote research consultants earn?

There is no single rate. Fees depend on the client type, your seniority, the method and whether the budget is capped. Here is what can be verified.

BenchmarkFigureSource and basis
US market research analysts$78,760 a yearBLS median, May 2025
US management analysts$101,860 a yearBLS median, May 2025
UNIDIR remote research consultancyUp to $9,000 totalAd cap, 6 months, hourly

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics figures are for people working in the United States. They are benchmarks, not what a Nigeria-based contractor will be offered. The BLS page on market research analysts puts the median at $78,760 in May 2025 and lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry requirement. The BLS page on management analysts puts the median at $101,860 in May 2025 and notes that about 14% are self-employed, with many working as contract consultants.

Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually below US local pay. Development-sector consultancies often have fixed budgets, and some agencies scale fees by seniority and location. Aggregator sites show wide US salary ranges for "research consultant" job titles. Many of those are salaried US roles that require US residence, so don't treat them as your rate.

Contract income is also lumpy. A consultant might have two contracts in one quarter and none in the next, so budget around your slow months, not your best ones.

Working as a research consultant from Nigeria: practical realities

Time zones

Nigeria is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year. Geneva and the rest of Central Europe are on the same time as Lagos from late October to late March, and one hour ahead in summer. London is one hour behind Lagos in winter and on the same time in summer. US Eastern is six hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026. Consultancies rarely need you online all day, but kick-off calls, inception meetings and validation workshops will be set in the client's hours.

Power, internet and fieldwork

Remote interviews with respondents fail quickly on a weak connection. Keep a second internet option (two providers, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot) and an inverter or solar backup, so a recorded interview isn't cut off when the grid goes. If the study includes fieldwork in Nigeria, confirm in writing who pays for enumerators, transport and security, and whether the client's insurance covers you. Under UN-style individual contracts, the consultant usually carries their own insurance.

Data protection and ethics

Research consultants handle sensitive data: interview recordings, health information, names of programme participants. The UNIDIR ToR explicitly includes de-identifying data and supporting secure storage. Store files in the client's systems where possible, encrypt your laptop, and never upload respondent data to personal cloud folders or public AI tools without permission. Many academic and health studies also need ethics approval, so ask early who is responsible for it.

Getting paid

Consultancy fees usually arrive in dollars after a deliverable is approved, by bank transfer to a domiciliary account or through a payments platform. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and fees. Invoice promptly, and quote the contract number and deliverable on each invoice.

Common mistakes and red flags

Most failed consultancy applications fail for avoidable reasons.

  • Ignoring eligibility. Applying for "national consultant only" roles in another country wastes your time and the reviewer's.
  • Sending a generic CV. Rewrite your experience to mirror the ToR's tasks and methods. Name the tools, sample sizes, countries and outputs.
  • Leaving out the fee or using the wrong format. Some ads disqualify applications without a fee in the requested currency and format.
  • Promising an impossible timeline. Evaluators know how long fieldwork and analysis take.
  • No verifiable outputs. A portfolio with nothing to read is the most common reason experienced people lose to less experienced people.
  • Missing the deadline time zone. UNIDIR's deadline is midnight Geneva time, not midnight Lagos time. In winter they are the same, in summer Geneva is an hour ahead.

Watch for fake "consultancy" offers too. Real clients don't ask you to pay a registration fee, buy a training course or send your BVN before a contract is signed. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the patterns to check.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian apply for international research consultant roles?

Yes, when the ad doesn't restrict eligibility to another country's nationals or residents. Look for "international consultant", "home-based" or a country list that includes Nigeria, and avoid ads marked "national consultants only" for other countries. Check the live ad each time, because eligibility varies.

How do I become a remote research consultant with no experience?

You usually can't go straight into consultancy without research experience. Start as a research assistant, M&E officer or analyst, build a portfolio of reports and datasets, publish something under your name, and then bid for small contracts such as literature reviews or data cleaning before leading full studies.

What qualifications do research consultants need?

Most ads ask for a relevant degree, often a master's, plus several years of applied research. Some accept a bachelor's with extra experience. Specific tools (R, Stata, SPSS, NVivo, SurveyCTO) and a record of published or client-facing outputs often matter as much as the degree.

How do research consultants get paid?

Usually by deliverable, through a daily rate or a fixed total fee agreed in the contract. Payment is released after the client accepts each output, then paid in dollars to a domiciliary account or a payments platform. Build your own insurance and tax into the fee, because contractors don't get staff benefits.

What is a financial proposal in a consultancy application?

A financial proposal is your price for the assignment, usually a daily rate or an all-inclusive fee per deliverable, often in US dollars and on the client's template. Some UN evaluations weight it heavily against the technical score. Follow the requested format exactly, because some ads reject applications without it.

Are expert network calls the same as research consulting?

No. Expert networks such as GLG pay you for your own industry knowledge, mostly in short calls at an hourly rate you set. Research consultancy means designing and delivering a study. Expert calls can add income but are irregular, and you must never share confidential employer information.

Do I need to register a company to work as a research consultant?

Not always. Many UN and NGO consultancies contract individuals in a personal capacity. Some firms and donors prefer a registered business for larger contracts. Either way, the tax responsibility sits with you, so keep records of every contract and payment.

Key takeaways

  • Remote research consultant jobs are short, deliverable-based contracts, usually won with a technical proposal and a fee.
  • Nigeria-based applicants can apply when the ad is home-based, international or lists Nigeria. "National consultant" roles elsewhere are usually closed to you.
  • Clients want a niche, named methods and tools, and outputs they can read. A degree alone rarely wins contracts.
  • The realistic route in is research assistant, M&E or analyst work first, then small contracts, then lead roles.
  • US salary figures are benchmarks only. Price each bid against the scope, any stated cap and your experience.
  • You carry your own insurance, tax and equipment costs as a contractor, so build them into your rate.
