You can become a remote research assistant from Nigeria without a master's degree. What you do need is proof that you can find reliable information, organise it and write it up clearly for someone else. Most remote research assistant work available to Nigerians is contract or freelance. Clients are business owners, consultants, writers, NGOs and research projects abroad. Salaried university posts are mostly limited to people living in that country.
This guide explains what the job involves day to day and which types of research assistant work are realistic from Lagos, Enugu or Kano. It covers the skills and free tools clients expect, how to build two or three portfolio pieces that replace "experience", and where the first paid work tends to come from. It also covers the practical parts: time zones, contractor status, getting paid in dollars and the scams that target people searching for "online research jobs".
Quick answer
To become a remote research assistant from Nigeria, learn the basics of desk research, source checking, Excel or Google Sheets and a citation tool like Zotero. Then create two or three short research briefs as samples. Pitch them to consultants, writers and small businesses, or apply to project-based research contracts that accept applicants outside the employer's country. Always confirm on the live ad that Nigeria-based applicants are eligible.
What a remote research assistant actually does
A remote research assistant gathers, checks and summarises information for someone else so that they can decide, write or publish faster. The person you support might be a founder comparing suppliers, an author fact-checking a book, a consultant preparing a pitch or an academic running a literature review.
The US occupational database O*NET lists the tasks for its "Social Science Research Assistants" category. They include internet and library research, checking that data in databases is accurate, preparing tables, graphs and written summaries of results, recruiting and scheduling research participants, and helping with reports and manuscripts (O*NET OnLine). That is the academic end of the job. Business clients usually want a smaller set of these tasks, delivered faster.
Typical tasks you will be asked to do:
- Find and summarise sources on a topic (articles, reports, government data, competitor websites)
- Build a spreadsheet of companies, prices, contacts or statistics, with a source link for every row
- Fact-check a draft article, book chapter or pitch deck
- Do a literature review and keep references in order
- Clean survey data or enter interview notes into a structured format
- Write a one to three page brief with findings and open questions
A research assistant is not the same as a research analyst. The assistant collects and organises. The analyst interprets and recommends. Many people start as assistants and move up once they are comfortable with data analysis; see remote research analyst jobs for graduates if that is your aim.
The three kinds of remote research assistant work (and which suit Nigerians)
"Research assistant" covers three very different arrangements. Knowing which one you are applying for saves weeks of wasted applications.
| Type | Who hires | Realistic from Nigeria? |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance desk research | Founders, consultants, authors, podcasters, agencies | Yes, the most open route |
| Project research contract | NGOs, think tanks, research centres, development projects | Often, if the ad says so |
| University staff post | Universities and hospitals abroad | Rarely, usually needs local work rights |
Freelance desk research for businesses and writers
Desk research means research done from existing sources (websites, reports, databases) rather than fieldwork. It is the most accessible route because clients care about the quality of what you deliver, not where you live. It often sits inside virtual assistant work: a client who hires a VA for inbox management may also ask for market or supplier research. If you already do VA work, adding research is a natural step. Our virtual assistant career guide covers that side.
Project-based research contracts
NGOs and research centres often hire research assistants for a fixed project, paid as contractors. These ads are more likely to welcome applicants from anywhere. As of October 2026, one example is a Research Assistant (Remote) contract with The Sahara Centre, a Lagos-based non-profit, posted on 9 September 2026. The ad offers a fixed-term contract of three or six months. It says applicants may be based anywhere, including outside Lagos or Nigeria, but must join check-ins during Lagos working hours (WAT). Pay is not stated, and applicants are asked for their salary expectations (The Sahara Centre ad on MyJobMag). The listed tasks are literature reviews, data collection and basic cleaning, drafting sections of outputs and tracking sources and citations. Ads close and change, so check the live listing before applying.
University and hospital staff posts
Salaried research assistant posts at universities abroad are usually employee roles tied to that country's employment and tax system. "Remote" in these ads often means remote within the US, UK or one state. They are worth reading for skills language, but don't expect them to hire someone living in Nigeria unless the ad says so clearly. If academic research is your main target, our guide to getting a remote academic research assistant job covers supervisor outreach and funded project routes in detail.
Skills you need before you apply
You don't need a long list of skills. You need a few, done well enough that a client trusts your spreadsheet without checking every row.
Core research skills
- Search technique. Use Google search operators (
site:,filetype:pdf, quotation marks for exact phrases), Google Scholar and official statistics sites. Know when to stop searching and report a gap. - Source evaluation. Tell a primary source (the government report, the company's own page) from a blog repeating it, and record the date of every figure.
- Summarising. Turn 40 pages into one page a busy person will read. Lead with the answer, then the evidence.
- Citation discipline. Every claim gets a link or a reference. Clients use your work in documents with their name on them, so one wrong figure costs you the client.
Tools clients expect
O*NET lists Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint and R among the in-demand technologies for this occupation, alongside statistical packages like SPSS and Stata and survey tools like Qualtrics (O*NET OnLine). For freelance and business work, this short list covers most requests:
| Tool | What you use it for | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Sheets or Excel | Comparison tables, data cleaning | Sheets is free |
| Google Docs or Word | Briefs and reports | Docs is free |
| Zotero | Collecting sources and citations | Free |
| Google Scholar | Finding academic papers | Free |
| Notion or Trello | Tracking client tasks | Free tiers exist |
Zotero describes itself as a free tool that collects sources while you browse, organises them into collections and generates citations in more than 9,000 styles, with plugins for Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs (Zotero). Learning it takes an afternoon, and it is one of the clearest signs to an academic client that you know what you are doing.
Skills that raise your rate
- Basic statistics in Excel, R or SPSS (averages, cross-tabs, simple charts)
- A subject niche you can talk about: health, fintech, agriculture, education policy, African markets
- Survey design and interview transcription for qualitative projects (see remote qualitative researcher roles)
- A second language, especially French, for West and Central African projects
If you enjoy the data side more than the writing side, look at the data analyst career guide. If you prefer the business side, see the guide to becoming a market research analyst.
Qualifications: do you need a degree?
For freelance desk research, no. Clients judge your samples. For project contracts and academic roles, often yes, and sometimes more. The Sahara Centre ad above asks for a recently completed master's degree or PhD candidacy in a relevant field. It says candidates with a first-class or second-class upper bachelor's degree may also be considered, and it values thesis or internship research experience (MyJobMag).
US survey data points the same way for academic-style roles. O*NET reports that 53% of respondents said a new hire needs a bachelor's degree and 37% said a master's degree (O*NET OnLine).
A Nigerian final-year project, an MSc dissertation or NYSC-year work in a research unit all count as research experience. Put them on your CV with the method used and the result, not just the title.
How much remote research assistants earn
There is no reliable published figure for what Nigeria-based remote research assistants earn, so we won't invent one. What we can give you is a US benchmark and an honest explanation of what moves pay.
The O*NET summary, using Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data for 2025, puts the median wage for US social science research assistants at $29.81 an hour, or $61,990 a year (O*NET OnLine). That works out to about $5,166 a month, or roughly ₦7 million a month at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026).
Treat that as a ceiling for comparison, not an expectation. The figure describes employees living in the US with US benefits. A Nigeria-based contractor doing similar work will usually be offered less. Pay usually depends on:
- Employment type. Freelance work is paid per hour or per project. Project contracts often pay a monthly fee. Few roles open to Nigeria include benefits.
- Complexity. Simple list-building pays least. Literature reviews, statistical work and subject-specialist research pay more.
- Client location and budget. A US consultancy and a local NGO will price the same task very differently.
- Your proof. Strong samples and a niche let you quote higher.
Many project ads, like the Sahara Centre one, ask you to state salary expectations. Work out a monthly figure you would accept before you apply, based on the hours, length of contract and your costs. Our guide on researching salary ranges before applying shows how.
How to build proof when you have no research job yet
Clients hire research assistants on evidence. Three short, well-sourced pieces will do more for you than a long CV.
Make two or three portfolio briefs
Pick topics a paying client might plausibly need. Keep each brief to one to three pages plus a source list or spreadsheet.
- A market scan. For example: "Ten payroll software providers serving small businesses in Kenya and Nigeria: prices, features, sources." Deliver it as a spreadsheet with a source link in every row and a half-page summary.
- A literature summary. Summarise eight to twelve academic papers on one narrow question, with a table of method, sample and finding, and references formatted from Zotero.
- A fact-check. Take a published article, check every figure in it against the original source, and report what was right, wrong or outdated.
Put them in a public Google Drive folder or a simple Notion page and link it at the top of your CV. Our planned guide to building a virtual assistant portfolio covers presentation.
Example (hypothetical): a test task and how to answer it
A consultant sends this test: "In two hours, find the five largest mobile money providers in Ghana by active accounts, with sources."
A weak answer lists five names with no dates. A strong answer:
- Gives a five-row table with provider, figure, date of figure and link to the original source (regulator report or company filing first, news article only if nothing better exists)
- Notes where figures are not comparable (one counts registered accounts, another active accounts)
- Lists what could not be verified in the time allowed
- Opens with a two-line summary
Test tasks are normal in this field. Unpaid tests should be short (a couple of hours at most). A long "test" that looks like real client work is a warning sign.
Where to find remote research assistant work
Pitch the people who need research most
The most reliable early clients are people who produce content or advice for a living: newsletter writers, podcast hosts, consultants, grant writers, small investment and market-entry firms, and authors writing non-fiction. Find them on LinkedIn or through their own sites. Send a short message that offers one specific thing.
Example (hypothetical) pitch:
Hi Tolu, I read your newsletter on African fintech. I'm a research assistant based in Lagos. I build sourced market scans and fact-check drafts. Here's a sample scan of payroll tools in Kenya and Nigeria: [link]. If you ever need background research for an issue, I can turn around a sourced brief in 48 hours. Happy to do a small first piece so you can judge the quality.
Our guide to finding international virtual assistant clients covers outreach volume and follow-up.
Freelance marketplaces
Upwork, Fiverr and similar platforms list research, fact-checking and data-collection projects. Check each platform's current service fee and withdrawal options on its own help pages before you set prices, because fees change. When pricing, use the approach in our guide on how to price VA services.
Job boards and NGO listings
Search for "research assistant", "research associate", "research consultant" and "research intern". Project ads from NGOs, think tanks and development programmes are more often open to Nigerians than university staff ads are. On WorkRemote, the remote job listings show where applicants may live for each role, which saves you reading the full ad to check eligibility.
Your own university and network
Lecturers with funded projects, especially ones with foreign partners, often need help with literature reviews, data entry and transcription. Paid or not, a reference from a principal investigator is valuable proof.
Can Nigerians apply? Reading the eligibility in an ad
Yes, when the ad allows applicants based in Nigeria and doesn't require work authorisation in another country. Many ads labelled "remote" don't meet that test, so check before applying.
Look for these phrases:
| Phrase in the ad | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| "Remote, anywhere" or "worldwide" | Open to Nigeria unless a later line says otherwise |
| "Remote (US)" or "must be authorised to work in the UK" | Not open to someone living in Nigeria |
| "Africa" or "EMEA" | Read further; it may name one country |
| "Contractor" or "consultant" | Usually invoiced fees, not a salaried job |
Ads tagged "Africa" can still be limited to one country. For example, a "Research Assistant" listing on remote4africa was marked 100% remote but open only to applicants in South Africa and working South African hours (SAST), supporting a UK-based team. The listing was closed when checked in October 2026 (remote4africa). Our planned guide to verifying whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents covers this in depth.
Working from Nigeria: hours, power, payment and status
Time zones and check-ins
Research work is often asynchronous: you get a brief, deliver by a deadline and meet briefly. Check-ins still happen. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026, so London is now one hour behind Lagos. US Eastern is five hours behind until 1 November 2026, then six hours behind. A 10am New York call in winter is 4pm in Lagos. Some Nigeria-based employers, like the Sahara Centre example above, schedule check-ins in Lagos hours.
Power and internet
Research means long sessions online and large PDFs. Plan for grid outages with an inverter, solar or generator backup. Keep two internet options, such as a home broadband line plus a MiFi or a phone hotspot on a different network. Save work to Google Drive or OneDrive as you go so that a power cut never costs you a deliverable.
Contractor or employee
Most research assistant work from Nigeria is paid as an independent contractor: you invoice, you handle your own tax and there are no benefits. The difference matters for leave, notice and tax. Our guide to contractor versus employer-of-record arrangements explains both, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria covers your obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
Getting paid
International clients usually pay through the platform you met on, a contractor payroll service like Deel, or a direct transfer to a dollar account. Compare apps and fees in our guide on how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria before your first invoice.
Mistakes and scams to avoid
Common mistakes
- No sources in the deliverable. A research table without links is just a list. Clients can't reuse it.
- Copying AI output without checking it. AI tools can speed up searching and summarising, but they invent citations. Check every reference against the original before it leaves your hands.
- Applying to US-only university posts. They take hours to complete and rarely consider Nigeria-based applicants.
- Underselling with "I can do any research". A niche ("health policy research", "African market scans") sells better.
- Ignoring confidentiality. Client drafts and data are private. Don't paste them into public tools or share them in your portfolio without permission.
Scams that target research job seekers
"Online research jobs" attract scammers. Warning signs include an upfront fee for "training" or "registration", a job offered on Telegram or WhatsApp without an interview, payment for "reviewing" or "liking" products, and requests for your BVN or bank login. A real employer never needs you to pay to get hired. Read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria before you share documents.
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a remote research assistant with no experience?
Yes, for freelance desk research, if you can show two or three strong samples. Clients judge the quality of your sourced briefs more than your job history. Project and academic research contracts usually expect some research experience, though a dissertation or final-year project often counts.
Do I need a master's degree to be a research assistant?
Not for business and freelance research. Academic and NGO project roles often ask for one. The Sahara Centre ad checked in October 2026 asked for a master's or PhD candidacy but would consider strong first-class or second-class upper bachelor's graduates.
How much does a remote research assistant earn?
No reliable figure exists for Nigeria-based remote research assistants. The US median for social science research assistants was $61,990 a year in 2025 (BLS data via O*NET), but that is a US employee benchmark. Contractors in Nigeria are usually paid less, depending on complexity, client budget and their samples.
What is the difference between a research assistant and a virtual assistant?
A virtual assistant handles a broad range of admin tasks, such as email, scheduling and bookings. A research assistant focuses on finding, checking and summarising information. Many VAs offer research as a higher-value service. That is a common route in for people already doing VA work.
Which tools should a remote research assistant learn first?
Start with Google Sheets or Excel, Google Docs, Google Scholar and Zotero, all free or with free versions. Add SPSS, R or Qualtrics if you are targeting academic or survey-based projects.
Are remote research assistant jobs open to Nigerians?
Some are. Freelance research and project contracts that say "anywhere" or name Nigeria are open. University posts marked "Remote (US)" or requiring UK work rights are not. Check the location line on every live ad before applying.
Can I use ChatGPT or other AI tools for research work?
Yes, for speed, as long as you check every fact and citation against the original source and follow the client's rules on AI use. AI tools can produce references that don't exist, and a single fake citation can end a client relationship.
Is a remote research assistant job full-time?
Usually not at the start. Most work open to Nigeria-based applicants is part-time freelance work or a fixed-term contract, often three to six months. Full-time arrangements tend to come from a long-term client or a project that gets extended.
Key takeaways
- Most remote research assistant work open to Nigerians is freelance desk research or fixed-term project contracts, not salaried university posts.
- Two or three sourced portfolio briefs (a market scan, a literature summary, a fact-check) matter more than a long CV.
- Learn Sheets or Excel, Google Scholar and Zotero first. Add statistics or a subject niche to charge more.
- The US median of $61,990 a year (2025) is a benchmark only. Contractor pay from Nigeria is usually lower and depends on your proof and the client.
- Confirm on every live ad that Nigeria-based applicants are eligible, and never pay to get a research job.
