Business new normal, people wearing masks in the office

You can do public health research remotely from Nigeria. Most of this work comes as home-based consultancies with UN agencies and international NGOs, or as research and analysis roles in organisations with a Nigeria country office. Few of these jobs are open to beginners. Live ads usually ask for a master's or PhD, several years of fieldwork or analysis experience, and written work you can show.

This guide is for people who already have that background, or are close to it. It covers which public health research roles work remotely, how to read the eligibility wording that decides whether a Nigerian can apply, what the pay benchmarks mean for someone based in Lagos or Kano, and how to become a remote public health consultant. That last route is where many experienced Nigerian researchers find international work.

Where a fact can change (deadlines, pay figures, eligibility), we date it as of October 2026. Always check the live ad before you apply.

Quick answer

Remote public health research jobs open to Nigerians are mostly home-based consultancies (UNICEF and other UN agencies, international NGOs) and research roles with organisations that have Nigerian offices. Expect to need an MPH, MSc or PhD, three to ten years of research or evaluation experience, skills in Stata, R or NVivo, and samples of your written work. US-only remote roles are generally closed to Nigeria-based applicants.

What counts as public health research work that can be done remotely

Public health research studies health across whole populations rather than individual patients. It covers questions like who gets malaria, why immunisation coverage drops in some local government areas, and whether a cash transfer improved child nutrition. Some of this work needs you in the field. The analysis, writing, review and design work can be done from a desk anywhere with stable power and internet.

These parts of a research project travel well:

  • Designing studies and writing protocols and data collection tools
  • Cleaning and analysing survey, surveillance or programme data
  • Systematic and literature reviews
  • Writing reports, policy briefs, journal manuscripts and grant proposals
  • Coding and analysing qualitative interviews
  • Training and supervising field teams over video calls

Field data collection, community entry and some stakeholder meetings still need someone on the ground. Many "remote" ads say so with phrases like "home-based with travel to field sites". For a Nigerian researcher, that travel element can work in your favour, because you may already be close to the study area.

Remote public health research roles and what they usually involve

RoleMain remote workWhat ads typically ask for
Research associate or officerLiterature reviews, analysis, report draftsMPH or MSc, 2 to 5 years
Epidemiologist or surveillance analystDisease data analysis, outbreak reportsMPH or MSc in epidemiology, statistics software
Biostatistician or health data analystSurvey and trial data analysisStatistics degree, Stata, R or SAS
Qualitative researcherInterview guides, coding, synthesisSocial science or public health, NVivo or similar
Evaluation or MEL specialistEvaluation design, indicator analysisEvaluation experience, mixed methods
Public health research consultantA defined study or deliverablesSenior experience, publications, sector expertise

The requirements column is a summary of the ads we read for this guide, not a rule. Monitoring and evaluation is big enough to have its own guide: see remote monitoring and evaluation jobs. If your background is closer to trials and drug safety, remote pharmaceutical research jobs and the pharmacovigilance specialist career guide are better starting points.

Who hires remote public health researchers, and whether Nigerians can apply

The answer to "can I apply from Nigeria?" depends on the employer type far more than on the job title.

UN agencies and their home-based consultancies

UN agencies regularly advertise consultancies marked "home-based" or "remote". These are fixed-term contracts for specific deliverables, not staff jobs. As of 27 October 2026, the UNICEF vacancies page listed several remote and home-based consultancies alongside office-based posts. One was a remote long-term agreement for individual consultants in mental health and psychosocial support, with a deadline of 3 November 2026.

A real example shows what these ads ask for. UNICEF's QuIP research consultant on the Kenya CT-OVC long-term study is a 10-month home-based consultancy with Florence, Italy as the duty station. Applications close on 30 October 2026, so it will have closed by the time most people read this. The ad:

  • Does not restrict applicants by nationality, and encourages applications "regardless of gender, nationality" and similar factors
  • Asks for a PhD in sociology, anthropology, public or social policy, public health, education or a related field
  • Asks for at least five years of qualitative research and evaluation experience in low- and middle-income countries, especially Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Asks for an up-to-date profile and CV, a cover letter, one to three samples of written work, and a separate financial proposal on UNICEF's template
  • States that UNICEF never charges a processing fee and won't ask for your bank details during recruitment

The topic is social protection rather than health, but the structure is typical of UN research consultancies, and the qualifications show the level expected. Fieldwork in Sub-Saharan Africa is a stated requirement, which is an advantage a Nigerian researcher can genuinely claim.

International NGOs and research institutes with Nigeria offices

Large health and population research organisations often hire Nigerian researchers through their country offices. Some of these roles are remote or hybrid within Nigeria. For example, a Population Council Researcher, Associate I or II post in Nigeria (advertised March 2025 and now closed) was open to Nigerian nationals, or to regional non-nationals from low- and middle-income countries who held or could get work permits. It asked for:

  • A doctoral degree in social science, medicine or public health
  • At least two years of post-doctoral experience for Associate I, or six for Associate II
  • A record of leading studies, publishing in peer-reviewed journals and winning funding

That version of the ad didn't state whether the post was remote. Many Nigeria-office roles in this sector are onsite in Abuja, so check the location line carefully.

Universities, governments and US contractors

Remote roles with US universities, state health departments and US federal contractors usually require the worker to live in the US and have US work authorisation. Remote jobs that say "US only" or list a US state are almost always closed to someone living in Nigeria, however well qualified. Our guide on how to read US-only and Canada-only restrictions explains these labels in detail.

UK and European universities sometimes recruit international collaborators for funded projects in Africa. These usually come through research partnerships, not open remote vacancies.

How to read the eligibility wording in public health research ads

Most rejections of Nigerian applicants happen at this step, before anyone reads the CV. Learn the vocabulary before you spend an evening on a cover letter.

Wording in the adWhat it usually means for you
Home-based or remote, internationalCan often be done from Nigeria; check the nationality and time-zone lines
Home-based with travel to [place]Remote with field trips; you'll need a passport and possibly visas
National consultantUsually for nationals of the country where the office is
International consultantOpen across nationalities; usually senior level
Remote, US or a US stateNeeds US residence and work authorisation
Remote within NigeriaNigeria-based contract, often paid in naira

Treat this table as a guide, not a rule. The ad's own text always wins. A Nigerian can apply for a "national consultant" post advertised by an office in Nigeria, which can be a good way into UN consultancy work, but it is usually paid on a national scale. For more on regional labels, see what EMEA means in a remote job ad.

A quick eligibility check before you apply

  1. Find the duty station and the words "home-based" or "remote".
  2. Look for nationality or work authorisation requirements.
  3. Check whether travel is required and to where.
  4. Check the working hours or time zone (most UN and European offices work Central European Time, which is the same as Lagos in winter and one hour ahead in summer).
  5. Check the contract type: staff post, consultancy or individual contractor.
  6. Make sure the ad is on the organisation's own careers site, not only on a reposting site.

Skills and qualifications employers expect

Public health research is a credentials-heavy field. Being honest about that will save you months of applications that go nowhere.

Degrees and experience

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says epidemiologists typically need a master's degree, often an MPH, and that some hold a doctorate in epidemiology or medicine. The live ads we read for this guide ask for more than that at international level: a PhD plus five years or more for senior consultancies, and post-doctoral experience for research associate posts.

People with an MBBS, BNSc or BPharm plus an MPH can compete, especially for roles that value clinical understanding. Without a postgraduate degree, remote international research roles are hard to get. Better first steps are data analysis, research assistance or M&E support roles. See remote research analyst jobs for graduates for that route.

Technical skills that show up in ads

  • Quantitative analysis: Stata, R, SPSS or SAS for survey, surveillance and trial data. Many donors and research partners expect Stata or R.
  • Qualitative analysis: NVivo, Atlas.ti or similar, plus clear coding frameworks. Some ads name a specific method, like the QuIP and CausalMap requirement in the UNICEF ad above.
  • Data collection platforms: ODK, KoboToolbox, SurveyCTO and REDCap for designing tools and managing field data remotely.
  • Health information systems: DHIS2, which many Nigerian state programmes use for routine health data.
  • Evidence synthesis: systematic review methods and tools such as Covidence or Rayyan.
  • Writing: reports and manuscripts that a donor or journal can use with little editing.

If your analysis skills are your strongest selling point, the health data analyst career guide covers the tools and portfolio side in more depth.

Writing samples count more than certificates

The UNICEF ad above asks for up to three samples of written work. Nigerian applicants often have strong field experience but no public record of it. Build that record: first-author or co-authored journal articles, published evaluation reports where you're named, conference abstracts, or a clean anonymised analysis report you wrote yourself. Our guide to certifications for education and research jobs covers which short courses are worth adding, but they won't replace published work.

How to become a remote public health consultant

A remote public health consultant is an independent contractor hired to deliver a defined piece of research or technical work, such as a baseline study, an evaluation, a literature review or a policy analysis, for a fixed fee or day rate. You are not an employee. You invoice, manage your own tax and usually get no benefits.

Many experienced Nigerian researchers already work this way, part time alongside a university or NGO job, before going fully independent. This is a typical route.

Step 1: Build a specialism, not a general profile

Clients hire consultants for narrow expertise: malaria, maternal and newborn health, immunisation, nutrition, HIV, health financing, or a method such as costing studies or qualitative evaluation. "Public health researcher" is too broad. "Immunisation coverage and equity analyst with Northern Nigeria fieldwork experience" is something a hiring panel can picture.

Step 2: Get onto rosters and talent profiles

UN agencies and large NGOs run consultant rosters and talent profiles. UNICEF, for example, asks applicants for a profile in its talent management system (TMS) along with the CV. Create these profiles fully, upload a clean CV, and set alerts for your thematic area. Long-term agreements (LTAs), like the remote mental health and psychosocial support LTA UNICEF advertised in October 2026, put you on a call-down list for future assignments.

Step 3: Learn to write a technical and financial proposal

Many consultancy ads ask for a short technical proposal (how you'll do the work) and a separate financial proposal (what you'll charge). The financial proposal is usually a daily rate multiplied by the number of working days per deliverable, plus any travel.

Example (hypothetical): A consultancy has three deliverables: an inception report (5 days), analysis (15 days) and a final report (10 days). A consultant proposing $250 a day would quote 30 days × $250 = $7,500. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦10,215,000 before tax and transfer charges. The $250 figure is only there to show the arithmetic. It is not a market rate. Rates vary widely by agency, seniority and contract type, and some agencies set fee bands themselves.

Step 4: Network where the commissioners are

Consultancies often go to people the commissioning manager already knows: former colleagues, co-authors, people met at conferences or on previous evaluations. Stay in touch with programme managers you've worked with at NGOs and in state ministries of health. Publish, and co-author with international teams where you can.

Step 5: Handle the contractor side properly

As a consultant you'll invoice in dollars or another currency, receive payments into a domiciliary account or a payment app, and declare the income yourself. Our guides on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria, tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, and the difference between contractor and employee status cover each of these. For research consulting beyond health, see our guide on how to get a remote research consultant job.

What remote public health research pays

There is no reliable published pay figure for Nigeria-based remote public health researchers, so treat any number you see online with care.

The best-documented benchmark is US pay. The BLS reports a median of $87,220 a year for epidemiologists in May 2025, with employment projected to grow 19% from 2025 to 2035. That median is for people employed in the US, mostly by government, hospitals and universities. It is not what a Nigeria-based contractor will be offered. At the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026), it works out to about ₦118.8 million a year, a figure few Nigeria-based roles come close to.

What actually affects your pay:

  • Contract type: International consultancies are usually paid as fees per deliverable or per day. Nigeria-office staff roles follow the organisation's local or regional pay scale. The Population Council ad above said salary follows "the pay scale of the relevant international office" without giving figures.
  • National or international terms: National consultant and national staff scales are generally lower than international ones.
  • Seniority and publications: PhD-level team leads with a publication record command much higher rates than research assistants.
  • Funding source: Donor-funded projects set budgets in advance, which limits negotiation.

When an ad gives no fee range, ask the commissioning contact whether there is a fee band before you write your financial proposal.

Working remotely from Nigeria: practical realities

Time zones

Most UN offices and European research institutes work Central European Time (CET), which is the same as Lagos in winter and one hour ahead in summer. UK partners are one hour behind Lagos in winter (GMT) and on the same time in summer (BST). US East Coast teams are five hours behind Lagos in summer and six hours behind from 1 November 2026. Team meetings with US partners will often fall in your late afternoon or evening.

Power, internet and data security

Analysing a large survey dataset or joining a validation workshop on a video call fails quickly when NEPA takes light. Budget for an inverter or solar backup, and keep two internet connections, for example a fixed line or MiFi plus a phone hotspot. Some Nigerian researchers now use Starlink, but check the current price before you commit.

Health data is sensitive. Work on an encrypted laptop, use the organisation's approved storage instead of personal Google Drive folders, and never download identifiable participant data to a shared computer.

Ethics approval in Nigeria

If a remote study involves collecting data from people in Nigeria, it will usually need approval from a recognised health research ethics committee, either nationally or at an institution. International clients often ask the Nigerian consultant to handle this. Ask early who owns the ethics application and budget time for it in your workplan.

Common mistakes Nigerian applicants make

  • Applying to US-only roles. If the ad lists a US state or "US work authorisation required", move on.
  • Sending a clinical CV. Clinical rotations matter less than studies designed, datasets analysed, reports written and publications. Lead with research outputs.
  • Skipping the writing samples. If an ad asks for them and you send none, your application is usually incomplete.
  • Underpricing to win. A very low financial proposal can make a panel doubt your seniority. Price by days and deliverables, and show your working.
  • Missing the deadline time zone. UNICEF's QuIP ad closes at 11:55 pm in Western European time, which is the same clock time as Lagos in winter. Check the zone on each ad.
  • Falling for paid "consultancy placement" offers. UNICEF states it never charges a processing fee and never asks for bank details during recruitment. Anyone asking you to pay for a UN or NGO consultancy is running a scam. Our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs.

A strong application for a remote research role rests on a CV that shows outputs, not duties. If you want help with that, WorkRemote's Premium membership includes a team member rewriting your CV and LinkedIn profile. The CV review page shows what changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a remote public health research job from Nigeria without an MPH?

It's possible but hard. Most international public health research ads ask for a master's degree at least, often an MPH, and senior consultancies ask for a PhD. Without a postgraduate degree, start with health data analysis, research assistance or M&E support roles, and build a portfolio of analysis and writing.

Do UN home-based consultancies accept Nigerian applicants?

Many do, but check each ad. The UNICEF research consultancy we opened in October 2026 placed no nationality restriction and encouraged applicants regardless of nationality. "National consultant" ads, by contrast, are usually meant for nationals of the country where the office is based.

How much does a remote public health consultant earn in Nigeria?

There is no reliable published figure for Nigeria-based public health consultants. Pay depends on your contract terms (national or international), your seniority, and the project budget. Use the BLS US median for epidemiologists ($87,220 a year, May 2025) only as a ceiling benchmark, not as an expected rate.

What does "home-based" mean in a consultancy ad?

"Home-based" means you do the work from where you live rather than from the organisation's office. Some home-based contracts still include field trips or workshops, which the ad will mention, so check for travel requirements and whether the organisation pays for them.

Which software should I learn for remote public health research?

Stata or R for quantitative analysis, NVivo or a similar tool for qualitative work, and a data collection platform such as ODK, KoboToolbox or REDCap cover most ads. DHIS2 is useful for work with Nigerian routine health data. Learn one statistics package deeply rather than three shallowly.

Is a remote public health consultant an employee?

No. A consultant is an independent contractor paid for deliverables or days worked, usually without benefits such as health insurance or paid leave. You are responsible for your own tax and payment arrangements, so read our guide on contractor versus employee status before signing.

Do I need to pay tax on international consultancy fees in Nigeria?

Generally yes. Income earned by a Nigerian resident from foreign clients is normally taxable in Nigeria. Our guide to how remote workers are taxed in Nigeria explains how this works under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Speak to a qualified tax adviser about your own situation.

Key takeaways

  • Remote public health research work for Nigerians comes mainly through home-based UN and NGO consultancies and through organisations with Nigerian offices.
  • Expect to need an MPH, MSc or PhD, several years of research experience, statistics or qualitative software skills, and writing samples.
  • Read the eligibility wording first: "home-based, international" is often open to you, while US-only roles are not.
  • A remote public health consultant is an independent contractor. Learn to price by days and deliverables and handle your own tax and payments.
  • US pay figures are benchmarks, not what Nigeria-based researchers are typically offered.
  • Real employers don't charge application fees. UNICEF says so on its ads.

Next steps
