How to become a remote pharmacovigilance specialist from Nigeria
A woman in Ohio takes a new migraine drug and comes out in a rash. She tells her pharmacist, who reports it to the manufacturer. Somewhere, possibly a laptop in Lagos, a drug safety associate turns that phone call into a coded, assessed case report and sends it to the FDA on time. That is pharmacovigilance.
It suits Nigerian pharmacists, doctors and nurses who want to leave clinical work without leaving healthcare. The door is narrower than social media suggests: most PV jobs ask for a health or life-science degree, and many remote ones are tied to a country where the CRO has an entity. Go in knowing that.

What a remote pharmacovigilance specialist does
The core work is the individual case safety report (ICSR). A report arrives from a patient, doctor, clinical trial site, published paper or social media post. You check it's valid (an identifiable patient, an identifiable reporter, a suspect drug and an adverse event), enter it in the safety database, code the events in MedDRA, judge whether it's serious and expected, write a narrative, and make sure it reaches regulators within the legal deadline.
With experience the work moves upstream: medical review of cases, aggregate reports (PBRERs/PSURs, DSURs), signal detection across thousands of cases, and risk management plans. In Nigeria, NAFDAC's Pharmacovigilance and Post Market Surveillance directorate runs the national adverse-reaction database and works with marketing authorisation holders, which is where local PV experience comes from.
A day in the role
- Triage incoming reports from email, call centres, trial sites and literature, and check the four minimum criteria for a valid case
- Enter cases in Argus Safety or LifeSphere and code adverse events and medical history in MedDRA
- Assess seriousness (death, life-threatening, hospitalisation, disability, birth defect, medically important) and expectedness against the label or Investigator's Brochure
- Write a clear case narrative that a medical reviewer can read in two minutes
- Send follow-up queries to reporters for missing information like dates, dose or outcome
- Screen medical literature weekly for reports involving the client's products
- Track every case against its day-0 clock so 15-day and 7-day reports go out on time
Skills you need
Core skills
- Clinical and pharmacology knowledge
You decide whether "chest pain after the second dose" is serious, and whether it's listed in the label. This is why employers want pharmacy, medical or nursing graduates.
- ICSR processing
Validity, seriousness, expectedness, causality and narrative writing are the daily work and the first thing you're tested on.
- MedDRA coding
Every event is coded to a Lowest Level Term and rolls up to a Preferred Term and System Organ Class. Wrong coding hides signals.
- Regulatory timelines
Serious unexpected reactions have strict clocks (15 calendar days, and 7 for fatal or life-threatening trial cases). Missing them is an inspection finding.
- ICH and GVP guidelines
ICH E2A and E2B(R3) define reporting and the electronic format; EU GVP modules (especially VI) define how cases are handled for Europe. Interviewers quote them.
- Good Clinical Practice
Clinical trial safety reporting sits under ICH E6(R3), finalised in January 2025. A GCP certificate is often listed as a requirement in CRO ads.
- Medical writing in English
Narratives, follow-up letters and aggregate report sections must be precise and short.
Soft skills
- Attention to detail
A wrong date of onset can change whether a case is reportable. QC reviewers will catch it, and they will remember.
- Working to a clock
Case volumes spike after a product launch or a vaccine campaign, and the deadlines don't move.
- Confidentiality
You handle patient health data covered by GDPR, HIPAA and client contracts.
Tools you'll use

Getting hired from Nigeria
Lead with your licence and clinical years. "Registered pharmacist (PCN), 4 years in hospital pharmacy, handled ADR reports to NAFDAC" is a stronger first line than any certificate. If you've filled NAFDAC yellow forms or done ADR reporting in a teaching hospital, say so; it is direct PV experience.
Who hires remote PV staff:
- CROs (IQVIA, ICON, Parexel, Fortrea, Syneos Health, Thermo Fisher's PPD) run large safety teams. Many case-processing hubs sit in India, Eastern Europe and the Philippines; remote roles are often tied to a country where the CRO has a legal entity. Filter LinkedIn by "Drug Safety Associate" and "remote", and check the location line.
- PV service providers and consultancies that run safety for small biotech companies. These are more open to contractors in different countries.
- Pharma companies in Nigeria (local manufacturers and multinationals' Lagos offices) hire PV officers on site or hybrid. It's the usual first step for people without CRO experience.
Build proof: a GCP certificate, two or three practice narratives written from published case reports, and confident use of MedDRA terms in interviews. UK and EU hours are the easiest from Lagos (one hour ahead of London in winter, same time in summer). Contract roles usually pay through Deel or to a domiciliary account; ask early whether you'll be an employee of a local entity or a contractor.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Paying for an expensive "PV certification" course that promises a job. CROs hire on degree, clinical background and interview performance, not on a private certificate.
- Applying to every remote CRO job without reading the location requirement. Many are open only to residents of the country listed.
- Treating PV as data entry. Employers want clinical judgement on seriousness and expectedness, and they test it.
- Weak narratives. Long, vague case summaries are the most common reason juniors fail QC.
- Losing track of the day-0 clock. A late expedited report is a compliance finding against the client.
- Using personal email or WhatsApp for anything involving patient data
Questions people ask
Can I work in pharmacovigilance in Nigeria without a pharmacy or medical degree?
It's hard. Most drug safety ads ask for pharmacy, medicine, nursing, dentistry or a life science like biochemistry or microbiology. Life-science graduates do get in at entry level, usually after some clinical research or regulatory work.
How much does a remote pharmacovigilance specialist earn?
CROs don't publish pay for Nigeria-based remote PV staff, and we found no reliable survey, so there's no Nigerian figure here. For comparison, Payscale's self-reported US average for a drug safety associate is $72,803 (46 profiles, updated May 2025), and in India, where much case processing is outsourced, it's ₹396,921 a year (37 profiles). Offshore pay is far closer to the Indian figure than the US one.
Is pharmacovigilance a good career for Nigerian pharmacists?
It can be, especially if you're tired of retail or hospital shifts. It moves you into regulatory science with a clear ladder, but the first remote job usually comes after local PV, clinical research or medical information experience.
Do I need ICH GCP certification for pharmacovigilance?
It's often listed in CRO ads, especially for clinical trial safety roles. More important is knowing ICH E2A and E2B(R3) and the reporting timelines well enough to discuss them.
What's the difference between pharmacovigilance and clinical research?
Clinical research runs trials before and after approval; pharmacovigilance monitors safety across a medicine's whole life, including after it's on the market. Trial safety reporting is where the two overlap.
Which hours do remote PV jobs work?
Usually the client's business hours. European clients match Lagos closely. US clients mean afternoons into late evening WAT, since US Eastern is 5-6 hours behind.

- Medical Coder
A medical coder reads doctors' notes and converts every diagnosis and procedure into standard codes (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS) that insurers pay against. It is one of the most remote-friendly jobs in healthcare, but from Nigeria the honest route is a US credential like the CPC or CCS plus an offshore employer, because most US remote coding jobs only hire people living in the US.
- Health Data Analyst
A health data analyst turns hospital, insurance, programme or public-health data into answers: which clinics are missing immunisation targets, which patients are readmitted, where claims costs are rising. It works well remotely from Nigeria, especially for global health organisations using DHIS2, KoboToolbox and Power BI; US hospital and insurer analytics jobs exist too but are often limited to US residents.
- Compliance Analyst
A compliance analyst checks that a company follows the rules it is licensed under, which at fintechs and crypto firms mostly means KYC, anti-money laundering, sanctions screening and transaction monitoring. Remote compliance analyst jobs are open to Nigerians, especially at African fintechs and global crypto exchanges, though senior named roles such as a money laundering reporting officer usually have to sit in the licensed country.
- Medical Billing Specialist
A medical billing specialist turns a doctor's visit into a paid insurance claim: checking the patient's cover, sending the claim, posting payments and fighting denials. You can do it remotely from Nigeria for US practices and billing companies, but expect US-hours shifts, naira-level pay at first and plenty of ads that say US only.
