Remote data quality analyst jobs are open to people in Nigeria, but there are fewer of them than general data analyst roles, and most want SQL, some Python and real experience checking messy data. The best openings for Nigerians as of October 2026 are with Africa-focused nonprofits, edtech and health programmes, and AI data companies that hire across the continent.
A data quality analyst makes sure that data is complete, correct and consistent enough to use, before anyone makes decisions with it. Companies care because bad data costs money quietly: wrong invoices, broken dashboards, AI models trained on errors.
This guide covers what the job involves day to day, the skills and tools employers name in their ads, real vacancies we checked that accept African applicants, what pay looks like, and how to build proof of your skills from Nigeria if you have never held the title.
Quick answer
A remote data quality analyst checks data for errors, gaps and inconsistencies, builds automated checks (usually in SQL or Python), traces problems to their source and reports on data health. Nigerians can get these roles, mainly with employers that state "Africa", "Nigeria" or "worldwide" eligibility. Expect to need strong SQL, one programming language, basic statistics and clear written reporting. Entry-level openings exist mostly as data annotation QA work.
What a data quality analyst actually does
The job is to answer one question again and again: can we trust this data? You do that by defining what "good" looks like, checking the data against those rules, and chasing down the cause when it fails.
Most teams describe data quality in terms of a few dimensions:
| Dimension | What you check | Simple example |
|---|---|---|
| Completeness | Missing values or records | Survey rows with no school ID |
| Validity | Values in the allowed format or range | Age recorded as 240 |
| Uniqueness | Duplicate records | Same customer entered twice |
| Consistency | Same fact agrees across systems | CRM revenue differs from finance |
| Timeliness | Data arrives when expected | Yesterday's sales file never landed |
| Accuracy | Data matches reality | Wrong GPS location for a clinic |
Real job ads put these ideas into practice. A Data Quality Analyst role at Imagine Worldwide, an education nonprofit, listed on Remotive as of October 2026, asks the hire to monitor "completeness, consistency, and plausibility" of data from devices, programme systems and field sources. It also asks them to automate checks, reconcile figures across sources, find root causes, and write summaries for non-technical readers.
A typical week
The details vary by employer, but a week usually mixes these tasks:
- Writing or updating SQL checks that run every day against the warehouse
- Investigating an alert, such as row counts dropping by half overnight
- Working with the engineer or field team who owns the source to fix the problem where it starts, not just in the report
- Profiling a new dataset before it goes into dashboards
- Keeping a log of known issues and of changes to cleaning rules
- Sending a short data health report to managers
How the role differs from similar jobs
Three titles get confused with this one, and the difference matters when you search.
- Data analyst: finds insight in data. A data quality analyst makes sure the data behind that insight is sound. Many data analysts do some quality work, and the skills overlap heavily. Our remote data analyst career guide covers the broader route.
- QA engineer or tester: tests software, not datasets. If an ad mentions Selenium, test cases for app features or regression testing of releases, it is a software QA role.
- Annotation QA reviewer: checks labels that people have added to AI training data. It is narrower and more often entry-level, and it can be a stepping stone. See the AI data annotator guide.
Data governance is a neighbouring field. Governance sets the policies, owners and definitions, while quality analysts test the data against them. Our planned guide to remote data governance jobs covers that side.
Skills employers ask for
We read the requirements in the live ads cited in this article, and they agree closely. Below is what keeps coming up, in rough order of importance.
SQL, at a working level
Joins, aggregations and window functions are the minimum. The Imagine Worldwide ad names all three. Window functions matter because so many quality checks compare a row with the rows before it: "is today's count more than 30% below the seven-day average?"
You should be comfortable writing queries that return the rows that break a rule. That is exactly how most testing tools work.
Python or R
At least one is expected for anything beyond spreadsheets. Python with pandas is the common choice. You use it for profiling, scripted cleaning and scheduled checks. A Data Analyst role at SafeStart Global, a nonprofit running a water programme in Kano State, advertised on jobnow.ng (posted 20 October 2026), asks for Python or R scripting for automated pipelines. The hire owns an automated Python data-cleaning layer that validates raw submissions.
Data testing frameworks
Two names appear again and again.
- dbt tests. dbt is a tool for transforming data inside a warehouse with SQL. Its official documentation explains that a data test is a SQL query that returns failing rows, and that dbt ships with four built-in tests:
unique,not_null,accepted_valuesandrelationships. Knowing these four, and how to write a custom test, covers a large share of everyday quality work in modern data teams. - Great Expectations (GX Core). This is a Python library for building data validation workflows, documented on the GX Core introduction page. Teams that work mostly in Python rather than dbt often use it.
The Imagine Worldwide ad lists data quality testing frameworks as "strongly preferred" and familiarity with dbt-modelled warehouses as an advantage. You don't need both tools. Learn one properly and understand what the other does.
Statistics for spotting anomalies
You don't need a statistics degree. You do need to know when a change is unusual: means and medians, standard deviation, simple outlier rules, and the idea of a baseline. "Applied statistics for anomaly detection" is a core requirement in the Imagine Worldwide ad.
Clear writing
This skill is underrated, and it decides a lot of interviews. When you find a problem, you have to explain it to someone who doesn't read SQL: what broke, how many records, what it affects, and what you recommend. Both ads above ask for communication with non-technical audiences.
Supporting tools by sector
| Sector | Tools that show up in ads |
|---|---|
| Field data, M&E, health | SurveyCTO, ODK, KoboCollect, Excel |
| Product and SaaS | dbt, a cloud warehouse, Git, a BI tool |
| Small nonprofits | PostgreSQL or Supabase, n8n, Power BI |
| AI data | Annotation platforms, labelling guidelines |
The SafeStart ad lists SurveyCTO, ODK or KoboCollect, Supabase (PostgreSQL), n8n, Power BI and GitHub Actions as desirable. If you have worked as an M&E officer or data collector in Nigeria, you may already know some of these field tools. Put them on your CV.
Remote data quality analyst opportunities open to Nigerians
The honest picture: if you search the exact title, most results are US-only or UK hybrid roles. Jobgether, Virtual Vocations and ITJobsWatch rank well for this query, and many of their listings require residence in the US, UK or Belgium. The roles that welcome applicants from Nigeria tend to come from three places.
1. Africa-focused nonprofits, edtech and health programmes
These employers run programmes on the continent, so they want people in African time zones who understand field data. Both examples below were open when we checked on 27 October 2026. Always confirm on the live ad, because eligibility and deadlines change.
| Employer and role | Who can apply | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Imagine Worldwide, Data Quality Analyst | Anywhere in Africa with reliable internet | Full-time; 3+ years in a data role; occasional travel |
| SafeStart Global, Data Analyst | Nigeria or South Africa | Heavy on data cleaning and validation; closes 7 November 2026 |
The Imagine Worldwide role asks for a bachelor's degree in a quantitative field or equivalent practical experience, plus at least three years in a data analyst or related role. Neither ad states a salary. Imagine Worldwide describes pay as "competitive and commensurate with experience".
The occasional international travel in the Imagine Worldwide ad is worth noticing. Make sure your Nigerian passport is valid before you apply.
2. AI data companies hiring QA reviewers
AI training data needs people who check that labels are correct. These roles are usually part-time contract work paid per project, and some are open to beginners. DataLens Africa's QA Reviewer for AI Data Projects, listed on Built In Calgary as of October 2026, is open to candidates in Nigeria and across Africa. It is marked entry level, and it says prior annotation or QA experience is an advantage, not a requirement. Pay is described only as "competitive per project".
This kind of work won't make you a data quality analyst overnight. It does give you real examples of checking data against a standard, and that is the core of the job. Our planned guide to remote AI evaluator jobs covers this route in more detail.
3. Data analyst and analytics engineer ads with quality duties
Many companies don't use the title "data quality analyst" at all. They put the work inside a data analyst, data engineer or analytics engineer role. Search for phrases such as "data validation", "data integrity", "data reconciliation" and "data observability" alongside "remote" and "Africa" or "EMEA". The SafeStart role above is titled Data Analyst, yet most of its duties are quality work.
How to check whether a vacancy accepts Nigeria
- Read the location line on the original ad, not the aggregator summary.
- "Africa", "Nigeria", "EMEA" or "worldwide" are good signs. "US only" or "must be authorised to work in the UK" rule you out.
- Look for time-zone wording such as "overlap with CET" or "available 9am to 1pm EST".
- Check whether the role is employment, contract or freelance. That decides how you are paid and taxed.
- Apply through the employer's own careers page or applicant tracking system where you can.
If the role is a contract, read our guide on contractor versus employee arrangements before you sign.
What remote data quality analysts earn
There is no reliable public figure for what Nigeria-based remote data quality analysts earn, and we won't invent one. Here is what we could verify, and how to read it.
| Source | Market and period | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| ITJobsWatch (permanent job ads) | UK, 6 months to 27 October 2026 | Median £48,500 a year |
| ITJobsWatch (permanent job ads) | UK, same period | 90th percentile £55,350 a year |
ITJobsWatch's data quality analyst page builds these figures from salaries advertised in UK job ads. They are gross annual pay for UK-based employees, and the sample is small (nine permanent ads in the period). Treat them as a ceiling for comparison, not as an offer you should expect from Lagos. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has no separate occupation for this title, so we haven't quoted a US government figure.
Remote pay for people based in Nigeria is usually below UK or US local pay. Employers in Africa-focused nonprofits often set pay by regional bands, and AI data QA work is usually paid per task or per project. These factors move pay the most:
- Whether the employer pays location-based or global salary bands
- Employment through an employer of record versus an independent contract
- How much automation you can build (SQL and Python checks pay better than manual review)
- Sector: product companies usually pay more than nonprofits, and project-based QA usually pays less than both
For pay across the wider analytics field, see our data analyst salary guide. When you do get a dollar offer, our guide on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the payment apps and their fees.
How to become a remote data quality analyst from Nigeria
Most people don't start in this title. They arrive from data analysis, M&E, data engineering, finance operations or annotation QA. The route below assumes you can already use Excel and have some SQL.
- Get SQL to interview level. Practise joins, GROUP BY, window functions and CTEs on a free database such as PostgreSQL. Write each quality rule as a query that returns failing rows.
- Learn one testing framework. dbt's documentation is free and shows how to declare tests in YAML. GX Core is free to install if you prefer Python.
- Learn enough Python. Use pandas for profiling: counts of nulls, distinct values, value ranges and duplicates. Save your scripts in Git.
- Build two portfolio projects (see the example below).
- Rewrite your CV around quality outcomes. "Built 25 automated checks that cut weekly report errors" beats "responsible for data". If you have done data cleaning in a past job, even in a Nigerian bank, NGO or survey firm, describe it in those terms.
- Apply to Africa-eligible roles and adjacent titles in parallel: data analyst, M&E data officer, annotation QA reviewer.
Our planned guide on building a portfolio for remote data science jobs covers how to present projects on GitHub. If you are starting from zero, the planned guide to remote data analyst jobs for beginners is a better first step than this page.
Example (hypothetical): a portfolio project that mirrors the job
Example (hypothetical): Amaka, a statistics graduate in Enugu, downloads a messy public dataset of school records. She loads it into PostgreSQL and writes a short data quality plan in plain English with six rules: every school has an ID, IDs are unique, enrolment is between 0 and 5,000, state names come from the official list of 36 states plus the FCT, every record has a date, and pupil counts by class add up to total enrolment.
She turns each rule into a dbt test or a SQL query. Then she runs them, finds 312 failing rows and groups them by cause. Her one-page report covers what failed, how many records, the likely cause and a recommended fix at source. Her GitHub repo holds the SQL, the tests, the report and a README.
That project shows the whole job: rules, automation, root cause and communication. In an interview, she can walk through it in five minutes.
Is a certification worth it?
Sometimes, but not first. The DAMA Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) programme has a Data Quality specialist exam. According to the CDMP exams page, it costs $311 (about ₦424,000 at ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN NFEM weighted average on 23 October 2026). It runs for 90 minutes (110 minutes for the ESL version) and is taken online with remote proctoring. The Practitioner and Master levels need the Data Management Fundamentals exam plus two specialist exams, and exams bought on or after 1 August 2024 must be taken within 12 months.
For most Nigerian applicants, a portfolio with working SQL tests will do more than CDMP at the start. CDMP makes more sense once you are aiming at data governance or senior data management roles, where employers know the DAMA framework.
Working remotely in this role from Nigeria
Time zones
Africa-focused employers often work on WAT or nearby. European teams on CET share Lagos time in winter and are one hour ahead in summer. US teams are harder: Eastern Time is 5 hours behind Lagos in summer and 6 hours behind from 1 November 2026, so overlap usually means working into your evening.
Quality work suits time differences better than most data jobs. Overnight checks can finish before the US team wakes up, and your report is waiting for them. Mention this in interviews.
Power, internet and data access
You'll often connect to cloud warehouses and run queries that time out if your connection drops halfway. Plan for an inverter or solar backup and two internet routes, such as a fixed line or MiFi plus a phone hotspot. Some employers give you a work laptop and require a VPN. Confirm this before you accept.
Handling sensitive data
Quality analysts often see raw personal data: names, phone numbers, health or payment records. Expect to sign data protection agreements. Never copy work data to personal drives or paste it into public AI tools. Both ads cited here mention following standards for sensitive data or reproducibility.
Tax and contracts
Most remote data quality work for foreign employers from Nigeria is done on contract or through an employer of record. Your income is still taxable in Nigeria. Our guide to tax for Nigerian remote workers explains how the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 applies.
Common mistakes and risks
- Applying to US-only roles. Aggregators often hide the location rule. Check the original ad first.
- Only cleaning, never automating. Fixing a spreadsheet by hand is useful, but employers hire for checks that run without you.
- Fixing symptoms. Patching a dashboard without telling the source owner means the same error returns next week.
- Writing like an engineer for managers. Lead your reports with impact ("1,240 payments missing a customer ID"), not query details.
- Falling for fake "data entry quality" jobs. Requests for a training fee, a "starter kit" or payment on WhatsApp are red flags. Read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians get remote data quality analyst jobs?
Yes, when the employer accepts applicants in Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. As of October 2026, we found Africa-eligible roles with an education nonprofit and an AI data company, and a quality-heavy data analyst role open to Nigeria or South Africa. Many ads for the exact title are US or UK-only, so check the location line on the original ad.
Do I need a degree to become a data quality analyst?
Not always. Some employers accept equivalent practical experience. The Imagine Worldwide ad asks for a quantitative degree "or equivalent practical experience". A portfolio of working SQL and Python checks is the strongest substitute for a degree.
What is the difference between a data quality analyst and a data analyst?
A data analyst uses data to answer business questions, and a data quality analyst makes sure the data is fit to answer them. The skills overlap a lot: SQL, Python, statistics and reporting. Quality analysts spend more time on validation rules, automated tests, reconciliation and finding why errors happened.
Is data quality analysis the same as QA testing?
No. QA testers and QA engineers test software features and releases. Data quality analysts test datasets and data pipelines. If a job ad mentions Selenium or app test cases, it is a software testing role.
What tools should I learn first?
Start with SQL, then one testing approach: dbt tests if you like SQL, or Great Expectations (GX Core) if you prefer Python. Add pandas for profiling and Git for version control. Field data tools such as KoboCollect or SurveyCTO help with nonprofit and health roles.
How much does a remote data quality analyst earn?
We could not verify a reliable figure for Nigeria-based remote workers. In the UK, ITJobsWatch reported a median advertised salary of £48,500 a year for permanent roles in the six months to 27 October 2026, from a small sample. Remote offers to Nigeria-based workers are usually lower than UK or US local pay.
Is there an entry-level route into data quality work?
Yes, mainly through annotation QA and data review contracts with AI data companies, some of which hire across Africa at entry level. Junior data analyst and M&E data officer roles with cleaning duties are another route. Full data quality analyst roles usually ask for a few years of data experience.
Key takeaways
- A data quality analyst checks that data is complete, valid, unique, consistent and timely, automates those checks and traces failures to their source.
- SQL (including window functions), Python or R, a testing framework such as dbt tests or GX Core, basic statistics and clear writing are the core skills in current ads.
- Openings for Nigerians cluster around Africa-focused nonprofits, AI data companies and data analyst roles with quality duties. Many ads for the exact title are US or UK-only.
- The UK median advertised salary was £48,500 a year (ITJobsWatch, six months to 27 October 2026). Nigeria-based remote pay is usually lower, and no reliable Nigerian figure exists.
- A portfolio project with written rules, automated tests and a short issue report proves more than a certificate at the start.
