Yes, you can work as a remote analytics engineer from Nigeria, but most openings expect you to already write strong SQL and to have used dbt on real data. Many well-paid ads are also limited to North America or Europe, so checking eligibility matters as much as having the skills. Analytics engineers sit between data analysts and data engineers. They turn raw data in a warehouse such as Snowflake or BigQuery into clean, tested tables that the rest of the company can trust.

This guide explains what the job involves day to day and how it differs from analyst and data engineering roles. It covers the tools employers name in their ads and what live ads showed about pay and location in October 2026. It also sets out a practical route in, both for a Nigerian analyst already writing SQL in a bank or fintech and for someone starting closer to zero.

Quick answer

Remote analytics engineer jobs suit people who can write production-quality SQL, model data with dbt and work in Git. Nigerians can get them when an ad is open to applicants in Nigeria, Africa or worldwide, or through contractor roles. Many senior ads are restricted to the US or Europe, so read the location line first. Most people get in by moving up from data analysis and showing a public dbt project.

What an analytics engineer actually does

dbt Labs, the company behind the dbt tool, describes the analytics engineer as someone who spends their time "transforming, testing, deploying, and documenting data" (dbt Labs). The same page says the job "is neither data engineering, nor analysis". It describes a role that borrows software engineering habits such as version control and automated checks and applies them to analytics code.

In practice, a typical week might include:

  • Writing dbt models in SQL that turn raw tables (payments, sign-ups, support tickets) into clean "fact" and "dimension" tables
  • Adding tests so a broken source table is caught before the finance dashboard shows wrong revenue
  • Reviewing a colleague's pull request on GitHub or GitLab
  • Agreeing with the head of growth what "active customer" means, then encoding that definition once so every report uses it
  • Writing documentation so analysts know which table to query

Analytics engineer vs data analyst vs data engineer

RoleMain outputTypical tools
Data analystReports, dashboards, answers to business questionsSQL, Excel, Power BI, Looker
Analytics engineerClean, tested data models in the warehouseSQL, dbt, Git, Snowflake, BigQuery
Data engineerPipelines and infrastructure that move data inPython, Airflow, Spark, cloud services

The boundaries blur in small companies. At a 30-person startup, one person may do all three. If your work so far has been dashboards and reporting, our guides to the data analyst career path and remote data analyst jobs for beginners are the better starting point. If you enjoy pipelines and infrastructure more than modelling, look at the data engineer role guide.

Can you do analytics engineering remotely from Nigeria?

Yes, when the specific vacancy allows applicants based in Nigeria. The work itself is fully remote-friendly: everything lives in a cloud warehouse, a Git repository and a chat tool. The limit is employment law, not the work. Many companies can only hire in countries where they have a legal entity or an employer of record.

The ads checked for this guide in October 2026 show how much the location line varies:

  • Linear, a software company, advertised an Analytics Engineer role on a remote job board in October 2026. The role is open to candidates in North America only, pays $150,000 to $190,000 a year and asks for 8+ years of experience (Dynamite Jobs listing). The job is remote, but it is not open to Nigeria.
  • Polymarket advertised an "Analytics Engineer, Customer Experience" role, posted 2 October 2026. It offers a base of $200,000 to $250,000 plus equity and asks for 5+ years of experience (General Catalyst job board). That listing says only "Remote". One aggregator tags the role "Worldwide" (Truly Remote), and other listings describe it as US remote. When sources disagree like this, trust the company's own application page and ask the recruiter before you invest hours.
  • Jobandtalent had an "HQ Analytics Engineer (EMEA Remote)" role listed on a portfolio careers board with Madrid as its location. It had stopped accepting applications by the time we checked (Atomico careers board). EMEA covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but an EMEA ad can still mean "EMEA countries where we have an entity".

These are examples of how ads are worded, not a list of companies hiring Nigerians. Openings close quickly, so always read the live ad.

The four kinds of "remote" you will see

What the ad saysWhat it usually means for you
US only, Canada only, North AmericaNot open to you unless you already have work authorisation there
EMEA, Europe, UKSometimes open to Africa; check the country list or ask
Worldwide, anywhereUsually open, often as a contractor; confirm on the company's page
Contract or freelanceOpen to most locations; you invoice and handle your own tax

For more on reading these lines, see our explainers on what EMEA means in a job ad and what worldwide remote means from Nigeria.

Skills and tools employers ask for

The tools below come from the analytics engineer ads opened for this guide and from dbt Labs' own description of the role. The core is the same in nearly every ad: SQL, dbt and a cloud warehouse.

Skill or toolWhat employers use it forHow important
SQL (advanced)Every model you buildRequired everywhere
dbt (Core or Cloud)Models, tests, documentation, deploymentRequired in most ads
Snowflake, BigQuery or RedshiftThe cloud warehouse your models run inRequired (one is enough)
Git and GitHub/GitLabVersion control and code reviewRequired
Fivetran, Airbyte, HevoLoading raw data into the warehouseNice to have
PythonScripting, light data engineeringOften listed, rarely the focus
Looker, Metabase, Hex, Power BIWhere your models are consumedNice to have

The Polymarket ad, for example, asks for "expert SQL", hands-on dbt modelling and testing, Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift, Fivetran or Airbyte, and Python. Linear's ad names dbt Cloud, Snowflake, Metabase, Hex and Fivetran.

The skills that don't appear in tool lists

dbt Labs stresses communication: turning a vague business request into a data model (dbt Labs). For a remote hire, this mostly happens in writing. You'll write pull request descriptions, Slack threads and model documentation. A hiring manager in Berlin or Toronto will judge you on how clearly you explain why a revenue number changed.

The second hidden skill is data modelling theory. You need to know what a fact table and a dimension table are, what "grain" means, and when to use a slowly changing dimension. Kimball-style dimensional modelling comes up again and again in analytics engineering interviews.

How to become a remote analytics engineer: three routes

Route 1: from data analyst (the most common)

If you already write SQL daily in a Nigerian bank, telco or fintech, you're closer than you think. Analytics engineering is largely what good analysts do when they get tired of copying the same messy query into ten dashboards.

  1. Move your recurring queries into dbt models, at work if your team allows it, or in a personal project if it doesn't.
  2. Learn Git properly: branches, pull requests, resolving merge conflicts.
  3. Add tests (unique, not null, accepted values, relationships) and documentation to every model.
  4. Ask to own one data model end to end, such as "monthly active customers", and write down the definition you agreed.
  5. Rewrite your CV around models built and problems prevented, not dashboards made.

Route 2: from software or data engineering

Engineers usually find dbt easy. The gap is business context. Spend time understanding how finance, growth or support teams measure their work, then show that you can model metrics, not only move data. Our guide to business intelligence jobs covers the reporting side you'll need to understand.

Route 3: starting from scratch

Be honest with yourself here. Entry-level remote analytics engineer roles open to Nigeria are rare. The ads we checked asked for 5 or more years of data experience. A more realistic plan is to get a data analyst role first (remote or local), learn dbt on the side, then move across after 12 to 24 months. Learn SQL to a high level before anything else.

Build a dbt portfolio that proves you can do the job

Without a portfolio, a CV that says "dbt" is just a claim. A public GitHub repository with a working dbt project lets a reviewer judge your actual code in ten minutes.

Example (hypothetical): Take a public dataset with several related tables, such as an open e-commerce or transport dataset. Load it into a cloud warehouse using a free tier (check each provider's current free-tier limits before you sign up). Then build:

  • A staging layer that renames and type-casts raw columns
  • An intermediate layer that joins and deduplicates
  • A marts layer with one fact table (orders) and two dimensions (customers, products)
  • Tests on every primary key, plus at least one custom test for a business rule
  • A README that explains the business question, the grain of each table and one decision you'd revisit

dbt Core is open source and free to run on your own laptop. A project like this, with clean commit history and a short write-up, is worth more than a certificate on its own. For general portfolio structure, see our guide to building a data portfolio.

Is the dbt certification worth it?

dbt Labs runs the dbt Analytics Engineering Certification Exam. As of October 2026, it covers dbt version 1.11. dbt Labs recommends SQL proficiency and at least six months of experience with dbt or dbt Core before you sit it (dbt Labs certification page). The exam fee was not shown on the page when we checked, so confirm the current price and payment options on that page before you plan for it.

Our view: the certificate helps most when your CV has no dbt in your job titles, because it shows a recruiter you've used the tool seriously. It doesn't replace a portfolio, and no ad we checked made it mandatory. Pay for the exam only after you've built at least one real project.

What remote analytics engineers earn

The salary ranges that companies published in the ads we opened in October 2026 were all for senior roles in the US market:

AdPublished range (gross)Who can apply
Linear, Analytics Engineer$150,000 to $190,000 a yearNorth America only
Polymarket, Analytics Engineer, Customer Experience$200,000 to $250,000 a year base"Remote" (location not specified)

These figures come from job ads, not a salary survey. They are US benchmarks for experienced hires, not what a Nigeria-based analytics engineer should expect. Companies hiring contractors from Nigeria usually pay well below US local rates. Some set pay by location, and a few pay one global band. dbt Labs' own page notes that analytics engineering pay sits above typical analyst pay and close to data engineering pay, and that location and experience change it (dbt Labs).

We haven't found a credible published source for analytics engineer pay specifically for Nigeria-based remote workers, so this guide doesn't invent one. Our data analyst salary guide gives a sourced lower bound for the step below.

Working out what an offer is worth in naira

Example (hypothetical): A European scale-up offers you a contractor rate of $3,000 a month. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's about ₦4,086,000 a month before fees and tax. Next, subtract the withdrawal fees charged by your payment app, the cost of backup power and internet, and the tax you owe as a Nigerian resident. Our guides on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria and tax for remote workers in Nigeria cover both.

Before you sign, also check if you're being hired as a contractor or as an employee through an employer of record. That affects leave, notice periods and who pays tax. See contractor vs employee when a foreign company hires you.

Finding and applying for remote analytics engineer jobs

Where to look

  • Company careers pages and the job boards they use (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby). Search for "analytics engineer" together with "EMEA", "Africa" or "worldwide".
  • Remote-focused aggregators that tag location, such as Truly Remote's dbt page. Always click through to the company's own ad before you trust the tag.
  • dbt's community. In Lagos, the Young Data Professionals Community ran an in-person dbt meetup in Yaba on 18 April 2026, with talks on dbt and data modelling (Meetup event page). Local meetups like this are where referrals start.
  • WorkRemote's tech job listings. Each listing shows where applicants may live.

How the hiring process usually runs

Most analytics engineering hiring processes follow some version of this sequence:

  1. Recruiter screen: location, notice period, pay expectations and working hours.
  2. Live SQL test: window functions, joins with duplicates, date logic. Practise these until they're automatic.
  3. Take-home or live dbt exercise: model some raw tables, add tests and explain your choices. Your README matters as much as your SQL.
  4. Stakeholder or case interview: "Marketing and finance report different revenue numbers. What do you do?"
  5. Team or values interview: written communication, async habits, ownership.

Many of the questions overlap with data engineering interviews, so our data engineer interview questions are good practice. If you'd like a person to rewrite your CV and LinkedIn around analytics engineering work, our CV and LinkedIn review is part of WorkRemote Premium (₦29,999 a month).

What to put on your CV

Lead with outcomes in the language analytics engineers use. "Built 40 dbt models with tests, cutting dashboard errors reported by finance" reads better than "Created dashboards". Name your warehouse, your BI tool and your Git workflow. Link your GitHub dbt project at the top, next to your LinkedIn.

Working as an analytics engineer from Nigeria: practical realities

Time zones

Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. That makes European teams the easiest fit: Central European Time is the same as Lagos in winter and one hour ahead in summer. London is one hour behind Lagos in winter and on the same time in summer. US East Coast teams are 5 hours behind Lagos in summer and 6 in winter (from 1 November 2026). US West Coast teams are 8 or 9 hours behind, which usually means evening overlap from Lagos.

Analytics engineering is more async-friendly than support or sales work. Most tasks are pull requests and model changes rather than live calls. Even so, expect a couple of hours of daily overlap for stand-ups and stakeholder questions.

Power, internet and equipment

A dbt run on a cloud warehouse doesn't need a powerful laptop, but it does need you online. Plan for:

  • An inverter or solar backup that lasts through your working hours, plus a generator or a co-working space as a fallback
  • Two internet sources, such as a fibre or Starlink connection plus a MiFi or phone hotspot
  • A laptop with enough RAM to run a code editor, a browser full of documentation tabs and video calls together

A stalled deployment because NEPA took light (the power went off) during a production release is the kind of story you don't want to tell a new manager.

Getting paid

Foreign employers usually pay through a payroll or contractor platform such as Deel or Remote, or straight to a dollar account. Compare the withdrawal fees and exchange rates before you choose. Our guide to receiving dollars in Nigeria compares the main apps.

Common mistakes and red flags

  • Applying to every "remote" ad. A North America-only role won't become open to Lagos because your CV is strong. Read the location line first.
  • Listing dbt without showing it. Recruiters see "dbt" on many CVs. A public project separates you.
  • Ignoring testing and documentation. Those habits separate an analytics engineer from an analyst who uses dbt.
  • Accepting the first naira-equivalent number. Compare offers in dollars, then subtract fees, tax and costs.
  • Paying for "guaranteed placement". A legitimate employer never charges you to apply or to receive an offer. Read our guide to spotting remote job scams before sharing your passport or bank details.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian get a remote analytics engineer job with a foreign company?

Yes, when the vacancy accepts applicants based in Nigeria, Africa or worldwide, or offers a contractor arrangement. Many senior ads are limited to the US, Canada or specific European countries, so confirm eligibility on the company's own careers page before applying.

Do I need a computer science degree to become an analytics engineer?

No. The ads we reviewed asked for SQL, dbt and warehouse experience rather than a specific degree. Many analytics engineers come from analyst, accounting, economics or engineering backgrounds. Your SQL and your dbt portfolio carry more weight than your degree title.

What is the difference between an analytics engineer and a data engineer?

A data engineer builds the pipelines and infrastructure that bring data into the warehouse. An analytics engineer transforms that data into clean, tested, documented models for analysts and business teams. Analytics engineers work mainly in SQL and dbt, while data engineers use more Python and orchestration tools.

Is dbt hard to learn if I already know SQL?

Not usually. If you write confident SQL, the core of dbt (models, sources, tests and documentation) can be learnt in a few weeks of steady practice. The harder part is data modelling judgement, which comes from building real projects.

Are there entry-level remote analytics engineer jobs?

Very few, especially roles open to Nigeria. The ads we checked in October 2026 asked for 5 or more years of experience. Most people reach analytics engineering after a data analyst or BI role, so start there if you're new to data.

How much do remote analytics engineers earn?

The US ads we opened in October 2026 published ranges of $150,000 to $250,000 a year for senior roles. A Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered less than US local pay. Base your expectations on the published band in each ad and the location rules attached to it.

Should I learn Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks first?

Learn one well; the SQL and dbt skills carry across. Snowflake and BigQuery appear most often in analytics engineering ads. Our Snowflake developer jobs guide covers that platform in more detail.

Key takeaways

  • Analytics engineers turn raw warehouse data into clean, tested, documented models, mostly with SQL, dbt and Git.
  • The work is fully remote-friendly, but many ads are limited by location. Check for Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide eligibility before applying.
  • The usual route is through data analysis, adding dbt, Git and testing habits, then showing a public dbt project.
  • Published pay in the US ads we checked was $150,000 to $250,000 a year for senior roles. Treat that as a benchmark, not a Nigeria-based offer.
  • European time zones overlap most easily with Lagos, and backup power and internet are part of the job.
