Remote AI Research Jobs: Qualifications and Opportunities
What remote AI research jobs need (degrees, papers, skills), which accept Nigeria-based applicants, pay benchmarks and how to land an ML research assistant role.

Remote AI research jobs do exist for people in Nigeria, but they are few and very competitive. Most research scientist roles want a master's or PhD and published papers. The more realistic way in is a research engineer role, a paid scholars programme or a research assistant post with a university lab. Many "AI research" adverts you see on job boards are actually rating or data-labelling gigs, which is a different job with different pay.
This guide explains what AI research work involves and which qualifications employers ask for. It also shows how to tell whether an advert accepts applicants living in Nigeria. We looked at real adverts and programmes in October 2026 to show what employers ask for in practice. There's a separate section on finding remote machine learning research assistant jobs, and another on building a research record from Lagos, Enugu or Kano when you have no publications yet.
Quick answer
Remote AI research jobs fall into four groups: research scientist (usually needs a PhD or master's plus publications), research engineer (strong code and ML experiments, degree preferred), ML research assistant (often with universities, open to graduates) and paid research programmes such as the Cohere Labs Scholars Program. Many are restricted to certain countries, so confirm on the live advert that Nigeria, Africa or "worldwide" is allowed before applying.
What counts as a remote AI research job
AI research means producing new knowledge about how models work or how to make them better. That covers new training methods, evaluation benchmarks, datasets, model architectures, and studies of safety or bias. The output is usually a paper, an open-source release or a model improvement that other people build on.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes computer and information research scientists as people who develop theories and models, design and analyse experiments, create new software tools and publish research. That definition fits AI research staff at labs and tech companies.
The main role types
| Role | What you do | Typical bar |
|---|---|---|
| Research scientist | Set research direction, run experiments, publish | PhD or master's, papers |
| Research engineer | Build training and evaluation code, run experiments at scale | Strong Python, PyTorch, ML results |
| ML research assistant | Support a lab: data, experiments, literature reviews | Degree or final-year student, coding |
| Research scholar or resident | Fixed-term paid research with mentorship | Varies; some need no prior research |
What AI research is not
Rating chatbot answers, labelling images and writing prompts for model training are often advertised as "AI research" or "AI training" work. These jobs are real and many are open to Nigerians, but they are not research jobs. They don't ask for papers and they rarely lead straight to a research scientist title. If that work is what you want, see our guide to remote AI evaluator jobs or the AI data annotator career guide.
Applied ML jobs, where you ship models into a product, also sit next to research. Our machine learning engineer career guide covers that route.
Qualifications employers ask for
Employers ask for different things depending on the role. Here is what the evidence shows.
Degrees: master's is the usual floor for scientist roles
BLS says computer and information research scientists typically need at least a master's degree in computer science or a related field. Some US federal jobs accept a bachelor's. Industry AI labs often go further and prefer a PhD.
You can see this in a live advert. Tether's remote AI Research Engineer (Agentic Post-training) role, listed as 100% remote worldwide, asks for a degree in computer science, machine learning or a related field. It says an MS or PhD is preferred, along with a strong record of publications at top AI conferences.
A degree is not always a hard requirement for engineering-heavy research roles. Hugging Face's Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Voice Agents (EMEA Remote) sits in the company's Science team. As of October 2026, it lists no degree or publication requirement and asks instead for senior experience, open-source contributions to Python libraries and LLMs in production.
Publications and conferences
For scientist and senior research engineer roles, papers act as your work history. The Tether advert names NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, CVPR and ECCV as target venues. These conferences are hard to get into. Accepted papers come mostly from universities and large labs with plenty of computing power.
If you have no papers, the next best evidence is:
- A preprint on arXiv describing a careful experiment, even a small one
- A reproduction of a published paper with your code and an honest write-up of what matched and what didn't
- A workshop paper (workshops at major conferences are easier to get into than the main track)
- Contributions to an open dataset or benchmark, especially for African languages
Technical skills that appear again and again
Research adverts we opened kept asking for:
- Python and PyTorch (some also mention JAX)
- Training and fine-tuning large models, including post-training (instruction tuning, tool use, reasoning)
- Distributed training on multi-node GPU setups (the Tether advert asks for this directly)
- Evaluation design: building benchmarks and measuring what changed
- Open-source work on GitHub or Hugging Face
- Clear written English, because remote research teams work through documents and asynchronous messages
Maths matters too: linear algebra, probability, statistics and optimisation. A Nigerian degree in mathematics, statistics, physics, electrical engineering or computer science is a fair starting point. Adverts rarely name the university. They want proof you can do the work.
Can you get in without a PhD?
Yes, through research engineering, residencies and scholars programmes, and research assistant posts. The PhD matters most for roles where you lead your own research agenda. We cover this in more detail in remote AI jobs that do not require a PhD.
Can you do AI research remotely from Nigeria?
Yes, when the advert accepts people living in Nigeria and the role doesn't require existing work authorisation in another country. Plenty of research roles fail that test. Many AI labs hire research scientists only in their hub cities, and many "remote" adverts mean remote within the US, UK or EU.
Read the location line on every advert. In practice it falls into one of these patterns:
| Location wording | What it usually means for you |
|---|---|
| Remote, worldwide or anywhere | Open to Nigeria unless the advert says otherwise |
| EMEA remote | Europe, Middle East and Africa, but some countries may be excluded |
| Remote (US) or Remote (UK) | You need the right to work there; usually not open |
| Hybrid or a named city | Relocation needed; visa sponsorship may or may not be offered |
"EMEA" in a title doesn't guarantee that Nigeria is included. Hugging Face's EMEA Remote voice agents advert, posted on 2 September 2026, doesn't list specific eligible countries. In that situation, ask the recruiter before investing hours in a take-home task. Our explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job description goes through how to check, and what "worldwide remote" means when applying from Nigeria covers the other common wording.
Employee or contractor
Research labs that hire outside their home countries often take people on as contractors or through an employer of record (EOR), a company that legally employs you on the lab's behalf. That changes your benefits, notice period and tax position. Read contractor vs employee when a foreign company hires you from Nigeria before you accept an offer.
Opportunities we checked in October 2026
These are examples, not a ranked list. We picked them because each one showed, on a page we opened, that it was remote and open beyond a single country. Openings close and change, so check the live page before applying.
Hugging Face (EMEA remote, engineering-led research)
As of October 2026, Hugging Face's public job board listed several "EMEA Remote" roles. One of them, Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Voice Agents, sits in its Science department. The advert describes the company as very distributed, with offices in New York and Paris that remote staff can visit. The work is close to research but the bar is senior: you need shipped real-time systems and open-source work. Hugging Face lists some roles with Paris as the location, which is on the same clock as Lagos in winter (CET) and one hour ahead in summer.
Tether (remote worldwide, research engineer)
The Tether AI Research Engineer (Agentic Post-training) advert was listed as "100% Remote Worldwide" on web3.career when we checked in October 2026, with an estimated (not employer-stated) range of $115,000 to $138,000 a year. The board shows it as posted about five months earlier, so it may have closed or been reposted. The bar is high: post-training at scale, multi-node GPU experience and preferably publications at major conferences.
Cohere Labs Scholars Program (paid, remote-first)
The Cohere Labs Scholars Program is a full-time, paid research role that pairs emerging researchers with mentors. Cohere describes it as remote-first with no need to relocate, and says previous research experience is not required. It looks for strong engineering skills and creative thinking. As of October 2026, applications were closed and the page said they were expected to open in autumn 2026, so check the page often. Pay is described only as "competitive". The page doesn't say how work permits are handled, so ask if you're offered a place.
Aggregator listings: handle with care
Sites such as Remote Rocketship collect "Nigeria" or "worldwide" research adverts. When we checked their remote AI research scientist page for Nigeria in October 2026, it listed five roles marked "Anywhere in the World". It also flagged all five as likely ghost jobs, meaning adverts that may stay up without active hiring. Use aggregators to discover company names, then apply on the company's own careers page.
How to find remote machine learning research assistant jobs
Research assistant (RA) roles are the most accessible paid way into AI research for a Nigerian graduate. An ML research assistant supports a professor's lab or a research team. The work includes cleaning datasets, running baseline experiments, reproducing results, writing evaluation scripts and summarising papers. Some RA posts are formal university jobs. Many are short contracts arranged directly with a lab.
The difficulty is that formal university RA jobs are often tied to the university's country and payroll. Remote, cross-border RA work is more often found through people than through job boards.
A practical search routine
- Make a target list of 20 to 30 researchers. Find recent papers in your area (for example, African-language NLP, speech, evaluation or efficient training) on arXiv and OpenReview. Note the authors whose work you could realistically help with.
- Read their lab pages. Many professors say on their own site whether they take remote collaborators or visiting students, and how to contact them.
- Do something first. Reproduce one figure from their paper, or run their code on a new dataset, and put it on GitHub. A message that says "I reran your benchmark on Yoruba and Hausa data, here's what changed" gets read. A generic CV usually doesn't.
- Send a short email. Keep it to five or six sentences: who you are, the specific thing you did with their work, what you'd like to help with and how many hours a week you can give. Attach a one-page CV.
- Join research communities where projects form. The Cohere Labs Open Science Community says it accepts researchers, engineers, linguists and learners, with applications reviewed weekly and members in more than 100 countries. Masakhane, the grassroots NLP community for African languages, says it has no prerequisites for joining other than following its code of conduct. Both are places where you can co-author with established researchers.
- Search job boards with the right terms. Try "research assistant machine learning remote", "research engineer worldwide" and "research contractor" on general boards, and set alerts so new listings come to you.
- Track replies. Expect a low response rate. Follow up once after about a week, then move on.
Example (hypothetical): Chiamaka, a statistics graduate in Ibadan, reproduces a 2025 paper on low-resource translation and adds Igbo test results to the original authors' public code. She emails the second author with her repository link and a one-paragraph summary. The researcher invites her to help run baselines for a workshop paper as an unpaid co-author. Six months later that paper is the evidence she uses to apply for a paid RA contract. This is an illustration of the route, not a promise of the outcome.
Be honest with yourself about unpaid work. Contributing to an open project for co-authorship can be worth it early on. Unpaid "trial projects" that look like real client work are not.

How much remote AI researchers earn
Pay varies widely, and figures quoted online are mostly for people living in the US.
| Source | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| BLS, May 2025 | $140,300 a year | US median, all computer and information research scientists |
| BLS, May 2025 | Under $82,200 to over $230,630 | US bottom 10% to top 10% |
| Tether ad via web3.career | $115,000 to $138,000 a year | Board's estimate for one worldwide-remote role |
At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), the BLS median of $140,300 is about ₦191 million a year. Treat that as a benchmark, not an expectation. The BLS figures describe US-based employees. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually below US local pay, and contractor rates come without US benefits.
What moves your pay up:
- Publications at major venues and a name researchers recognise
- Experience training large models on many GPUs, which few people have
- Joining a company that pays the same for a role wherever you live (some do; ask)
- Senior research engineering skills, which are often easier to prove than a scientist's research track record
Scholars programmes and RA contracts pay far less than staff roles but are easier to get. For a wider view of AI roles and pay, see the best remote AI jobs for Nigerians.
Building a research track record from Nigeria
With no publications, your plan should be to produce evidence a hiring researcher can check in ten minutes.
A 12-month plan (suggested, adjust to your level)
| Months | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Fundamentals: PyTorch, training loops, evaluation | Two clean GitHub repos |
| 4 to 6 | Reproduce one recent paper | Repo plus blog write-up |
| 7 to 9 | Join a community project (Masakhane, Cohere Labs) | Named contribution |
| 10 to 12 | Small original experiment | arXiv preprint or workshop submission |
Where Nigerian researchers have an advantage
African languages, local datasets and local evaluation problems are still under-researched. A careful benchmark for Nigerian Pidgin, Hausa, Yoruba or Igbo, or a study of how models handle Nigerian names, accents or documents, is original work that labs value. It's also work a researcher in San Francisco can't easily do. The NLP side of this is covered in remote natural language processing jobs.
Computing power without a lab budget
Research needs GPUs, and that's a real barrier from Nigeria. Start with small models and free notebook tiers. Apply for compute credits offered through community programmes and conferences when they are announced. Design experiments that answer a clear question at small scale rather than trying to train a big model. Reviewers respect a well-controlled small study.
A strong portfolio matters as much as qualifications. Our guide to building a portfolio for remote data science jobs covers presentation. If you're weighing certificates, read which AI certifications are worth it first: research hiring managers care far more about papers and code than certificates.
Working remotely on AI research from Nigeria
Research work brings its own practical problems on top of normal remote-work setup.
- Long training runs need stable power. If you run experiments on a cloud GPU, your laptop doesn't need to stay on, but your session and checkpoints do. Use tools that save checkpoints often and keep running if you disconnect. For anything local, an inverter or solar backup is essential, not optional.
- Uploads are heavy. Datasets and model weights mean big uploads. Keep two internet sources (a fixed provider or Starlink plus a MiFi or phone hotspot) and schedule large transfers at night.
- Time zones shape collaboration. Lagos is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. As of October 2026, UK clocks have gone back, so London is one hour behind Lagos. US Eastern switches to EST on 1 November 2026, putting it six hours behind. US West Coast labs are eight or nine hours behind. Paris-based teams match Lagos in winter. Expect some evening meetings with US labs.
- Getting paid. Contractor and scholars payments often arrive in dollars through platforms such as Deel or by international transfer. See how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria for the apps and fees.
- Tax. Foreign income is still taxable in Nigeria. Read tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
- Intellectual property. Research contracts usually assign your work to the employer. Check what you may publish, and whether your existing open-source work is excluded, before signing.
Red flags in "AI research" job adverts
The words "AI research" attract scammers because they sound well paid and technical. Walk away if:
- You're asked to pay for training, a "research licence", equipment or certification before starting
- The "research" turns out to be posting reviews, liking videos or recruiting other people
- The offer comes on Telegram or WhatsApp with no company email domain and no careers page you can check
- The pay is far above anything in the table above for a role that asks for no skills
- You're asked for your BVN, bank login or passport scan before any interview
Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the wider patterns.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote AI research job without a PhD?
Yes, but usually not a research scientist title at a top lab. Research engineer roles, scholars programmes and research assistant posts are the realistic entry points. Cohere's Scholars Program, for example, says previous research experience isn't required. Publications and strong code can partly stand in for a doctorate over time.
Do AI labs hire research scientists remotely from Nigeria?
Some do, but most research scientist roles at large labs are tied to hub cities or need existing work rights. Remote research roles that accept Nigeria are usually labelled "worldwide", "anywhere" or "EMEA". Confirm on the live advert or with the recruiter that Nigeria is included.
How do I find remote machine learning research assistant jobs?
Mostly through researchers rather than job boards. Pick researchers whose papers you can contribute to, reproduce or extend part of their work, then email them with your results. Communities such as Masakhane and the Cohere Labs Open Science Community are also good places to join projects and meet researchers.
What degree is best for AI research?
Computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics and electrical engineering are the most common backgrounds. BLS says research scientists typically need at least a master's degree. Employers care more about whether you can design experiments, write solid PyTorch code and explain results than about the exact course title.
How much does a remote AI research engineer earn?
It varies widely. BLS puts the US median for computer and information research scientists at $140,300 a year (May 2025). One worldwide-remote research engineer advert we checked in October 2026 carried an estimated $115,000 to $138,000. Nigeria-based contractors are usually offered less than US local pay, and scholars or RA roles pay much less again.
Is rating AI responses the same as AI research?
No. Evaluation and annotation work trains and checks models, but you follow guidelines rather than design experiments, and it doesn't usually need publications. It can be a useful way to earn while you build skills. It won't count as research experience unless you also publish or build something original.
Do I need to publish at NeurIPS to get hired?
Not for every role, though papers at venues like NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR or ACL help a lot for scientist roles. Workshop papers, arXiv preprints, careful reproductions and open-source contributions are accepted evidence for research engineer and assistant roles.
Key takeaways
- Remote AI research jobs that accept Nigeria-based applicants exist but are scarce. Check the location line on every advert.
- Research scientist roles usually want a master's or PhD plus publications. Research engineer, scholar and research assistant roles are more open.
- "EMEA remote" doesn't automatically include Nigeria. Ask before spending hours on an assessment.
- US salary data such as the BLS median of $140,300 is a benchmark, not what a Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered.
- Build checkable evidence: reproductions, preprints and contributions to communities like Masakhane or Cohere Labs.
- Anything called "AI research" that asks you to pay upfront is a scam.
