How to Find Remote Data Governance Jobs
Where to find remote data governance jobs, how to tell if Nigerians can apply, the skills and CDMP costs employers expect, and routes in from analysis or compliance.

You find remote data governance jobs by searching under the right job titles (data steward, data governance analyst, data governance engineer, data catalogue specialist) on applicant tracking system (ATS) boards and remote job sites. Then you filter hard for ads that allow EMEA or worldwide applicants. That filtering matters most for Nigerians, because many governance roles sit inside banks, insurers and public companies that only hire in a handful of countries.
This guide covers the titles to search, the boards and search strings that turn up real ads, how to read the location line, and the skills and certificate (CDMP) that hiring managers keep asking for. It also shows how to turn Nigerian compliance experience into a credible application. We checked live ads in October 2026 and use two of them as worked examples. One shows what an open-to-Nigeria posting looks like. The other shows how a "remote EMEA" ad can still leave you out.
Quick answer
Search titles like "data governance analyst", "data steward" and "data governance engineer" on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby boards, remote boards such as Himalayas, and company careers pages. Apply only where the ad allows EMEA, Africa, Nigeria or worldwide. Most roles want SQL, metadata and data quality experience, and knowledge of the DAMA-DMBOK framework. Entry-level remote openings are rare, so most people move in from data analysis, compliance or data engineering.
What data governance jobs involve, and the titles to search
Data governance is the work of deciding who owns a company's data, what the data means, how good it has to be, and who can use it. In practice that means writing policies, keeping a data catalogue (an inventory of datasets with definitions and owners) up to date, running data quality checks, and making sure personal data is handled the way laws like the EU's GDPR or Nigeria's Data Protection Act require.
The same work goes by many names, so a search for "data governance" alone misses a lot. These are the titles worth saving as separate searches:
| Job title | What the work leans towards | Typical level |
|---|---|---|
| Data steward | Definitions, ownership, fixing data issues in one business area | Junior to mid |
| Data governance analyst | Policies, catalogue upkeep, quality reporting | Mid |
| Data catalogue / metadata specialist | Tools like Microsoft Purview, Collibra, Alation | Mid |
| Data governance engineer | Automating access, lineage and quality checks in code | Mid to senior |
| Data governance manager / lead | Running the programme and the stewards | Senior |
| Director / head of data governance | Strategy, executive reporting | Senior leadership |
Some neighbouring roles do part of the same job. A data quality analyst focuses on measuring and fixing data (see remote data quality analyst jobs). A data privacy analyst focuses on personal data and regulation (see remote data privacy analyst jobs). If a governance ad is too senior for you, those two titles are often the realistic way in.
Why the "engineer" titles are worth your attention
Governance is moving into code. Canonical's Lead Data Governance Engineer ad, which we opened in October 2026, asks for Python and SQL. It also mentions tools such as Trino, Apache Ranger, Airbyte and Superset, and describes building tooling to automate "data mesh operations". If you already write SQL and Python, engineer-flavoured governance roles may be open to you even without a policy background.
Where remote data governance jobs are advertised
No single board carries most of these roles. Governance hiring is spread across tech companies, banks, insurers, healthcare firms and consultancies, so you need several channels.
ATS job boards (the most reliable source)
Many tech companies post directly on Greenhouse, Lever or Ashby. These pages are the employer's own ad, so the location line is the employer's own wording. Google search operators find them:
site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "data governance" remotesite:boards.greenhouse.io "data steward" EMEAsite:jobs.lever.co "data governance" remotesite:jobs.ashbyhq.com "data governance"
Swap in each title from the table above. Add "EMEA", "Africa" or "anywhere" to narrow the results. Expect a lot of noise: our test searches in October 2026 turned up many US-only and South Africa-only roles alongside the useful ones.
Remote job boards with country filters
Some remote boards let you filter by the country you live in. Himalayas, for example, has a Nigeria page for data governance jobs. When we opened it in October 2026, it listed Canonical's Lead Data Governance Engineer role next to data architect, data quality and data privacy roles. Treat these filters as a shortlist, not a final answer. Most rows showed no clear location rule, and some titles said "LatAm only" or "EMEA only", so open each ad and read the eligibility line yourself.
Aggregators that repost ads from elsewhere can show jobs that have already closed. One Lever-hosted repost we tried in October 2026 returned "not found". Always click through to the employer's own page before you spend time on a cover letter.
Company careers pages
Companies that already run fully remote, multi-country teams are the best targets, because they have a way to pay someone in Nigeria. Make a list of 20 to 30 such companies in software, fintech, data tooling and healthtech, and check their careers pages weekly. Our guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages explains how to build and keep that list.
WorkRemote.ng listings
On WorkRemote, data roles appear under the tech category on the jobs board. Each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live. WorkRemote reviews listings and aims to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but it can't check every detail. Read the employer's own ad before applying.
Reading the location line: can you apply from Nigeria?
This is where most wasted applications come from. A remote data governance job is open to you only if the employer can legally pay someone living in Nigeria and the ad doesn't rule your location out.
The phrases you'll meet usually mean the following:
| Phrase in the ad | What it usually means for a Nigeria-based applicant |
|---|---|
| Remote, worldwide / anywhere | Open, subject to time-zone overlap |
| Home based, EMEA | Usually open, since Nigeria is in EMEA, but check for a country list |
| Remote, EMEA plus a list of countries | Only the listed countries; Nigeria must appear |
| Remote, Africa | Open, but some mean South Africa or Kenya only |
| Remote (US), Remote (UK), Remote (Canada) | Not open; needs residence and work rights there |
EMEA stands for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Our explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job description covers the grey areas. The two ads below show why the detail matters.
Example from a live ad: Canonical (open to EMEA)
As of October 2026, Canonical's Lead Data Governance Engineer ad on Greenhouse was accepting applications and listed the location as "Home based - EMEA". The ad asks for experience with data quality, governance and security processes and tools, Python and SQL, and professional written and spoken English.
The application form is unusual and worth reading closely. It asks for school and university results with the grading system. It asks you to confirm that answers are in your own words, and says AI-generated content disqualifies an application. It also asks you to confirm you can attend in-person company events two to four times a year, each lasting one to two weeks, often with international travel and visas.
That travel line matters for Nigerian applicants. With a Nigerian passport you may need a visa for every event location, so allow for application lead times and be honest in the form if this would be difficult. The role is open to you, but the travel is part of the job.
Example from a live ad: Deel (remote EMEA, but a closed list)
Deel's Director of Data Governance ad on the General Catalyst job board was no longer accepting applications when we checked in October 2026. It is still a useful lesson. The location field read "EMEA" followed by a named list: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Nigeria was not on it. When an ad says "EMEA" and then lists countries, the list is what counts.

What employers ask for in remote data governance roles
The two ads above sit at opposite ends of seniority, but they overlap a lot. Deel's director role asked for 10 or more years in data management, data governance or information architecture, at least five of them in leadership. It also asked for knowledge of the DAMA-DMBOK framework, experience with modern data tools such as Snowflake and dbt, and the ability to explain data risks to executives. Canonical's engineer role asked for Python, SQL and hands-on governance tooling.
From those ads, and from the way the work is defined, the skills fall into three groups.
Technical skills
- SQL, well enough to profile a table, find duplicates and write quality checks
- One data platform, such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery or a warehouse your current employer uses
- A data catalogue or governance tool: Microsoft Purview, Collibra, Alation or open-source options like Apache Atlas or Ranger
- For engineer roles, Python and some experience automating access rules or lineage
Framework and regulatory knowledge
- DAMA-DMBOK, the Data Management Body of Knowledge published by DAMA International, which most governance teams use as a shared vocabulary
- Personal data rules: GDPR for European employers, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 for anything touching Nigerian customers
- For finance employers, some familiarity with audit and controls (Deel's ad named SOX, the US public company reporting law)
Communication skills
Governance is mostly persuasion. You write policies that other teams have to follow, run meetings with data owners who are busy with other things, and explain in plain words why a missing field matters. Remote employers judge this from your written application, so a sloppy cover letter hurts more here than in many technical roles.
How to get into data governance without a governance job title
Fully remote entry-level data governance roles are rare. Most governance jobs ask for several years in data or compliance work first, and the ads we checked were mid-level to leadership. Expect to move in sideways rather than start from scratch.
From data analysis
Analysts already work with messy data and definitions. To reposition yourself, take on (or volunteer for) data dictionary work, quality dashboards and access requests in your current job. Then describe them using governance language: "defined ownership for 40 customer fields", not "cleaned data". Our data analyst career guide covers the core analyst skills if you're still building them.
From compliance, risk or banking
This is the strongest local route, and it comes from Nigerian law. In August 2025, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) issued compliance notices to 1,368 organisations, according to a Jones Day summary of the notices. Most were financial institutions (795) and insurance brokers (392), with gaming, insurance and pension companies making up the rest. The notices asked for evidence of 2024 compliance audit returns, a named data protection officer (DPO), a summary of technical and organisational measures, and registration as a data controller or processor of major importance.
Every one of those tasks is data governance work. If you have helped your bank, insurer or fintech file NDPA audit returns, build a record of processing activities or answer a regulator's request, you have governance experience. Put it on your CV in those terms. The compliance analyst career guide covers that side of the work, and our planned guide to remote governance, risk and compliance jobs covers the wider GRC field.
From data engineering or database work
Engineers can aim straight at "data governance engineer" ads, which reward people who can automate access controls, lineage and quality tests. The data engineer career guide outlines the stack these roles build on.
Building evidence when your job doesn't help
If your current role gives you no governance work, build a small public project:
- Take an open dataset (for example a public health or transport dataset), write a one-page data dictionary, define three quality rules and show the SQL checks
- Write a short sample data access policy for a fictional company, with roles and approval steps
- Publish both on GitHub or a simple portfolio page and link them in applications
Example (hypothetical): Chidinma, a credit operations officer in Lagos, wants a remote data steward role. She documents the 25 fields her team uses in loan applications. She writes quality rules for the five that cause the most rework, and shows a before-and-after error count from her own tracking sheet. That one page, plus her NDPA audit-return work, gives a hiring manager something concrete to discuss.
The CDMP certificate: what it costs and whether you need it
The Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) from DAMA International is the certificate most closely tied to governance work. It isn't mandatory for most roles, but it backs up a sideways move when your job title doesn't say "data".
According to DAMA's CDMP page, as of October 2026:
- There are three levels: Associate, Practitioner and Master.
- Every level needs the Data Management Fundamentals exam: 100 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes. The pass mark is 60% for Associate, 70% for Practitioner and 80% for Master.
- Practitioner and Master also need two specialist exams. Data Governance, Data Quality and Metadata are among the options.
- Experience requirements are none for Associate, two or more years for Practitioner and ten or more for Master.
- Exams are online and cost $311 each.
In naira, at WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026):
| Level | Exams | Cost in dollars | Approx. cost in naira |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associate | 1 | $311 | about ₦424,000 |
| Practitioner | 3 | $933 | about ₦1.27 million |
Paying in dollars from Nigeria can be awkward with some naira cards, so check your card's international limit first. Our guide to receiving and holding dollars in Nigeria covers the dollar cards and accounts Nigerians commonly use. If money is tight, study the DAMA-DMBOK concepts and build the portfolio project first. Take the Associate exam once you are actively applying, so the certificate is fresh on your CV.
What remote data governance jobs pay
We found no reliable public salary survey for data governance roles held by Nigeria-based remote workers, so we won't quote a figure. Here is what we can verify.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't track data governance as its own occupation. The closest benchmark is database architects, whose median pay was $139,500 a year in May 2025, according to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook. That is roughly ₦190 million a year at ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026). The same page puts database administrators at $104,620. These are US pay levels for US-based workers. They are not what a remote employer will offer someone in Lagos or Enugu.
Many international employers set pay by the worker's location. Canonical's ad says compensation depends on location, experience and performance. In practice, offers to Nigeria-based workers are usually well below US local pay, even when they are far above Nigerian market rates.
When an ad publishes a salary band, check whether it says the band applies to one country only. Our guide to researching salary ranges before you apply explains how to read pay bands properly.
A weekly search routine that finds the right ads
Governance roles appear less often than analyst or engineering jobs, so a steady routine beats bursts of mass applying.
- Monday: Run your saved ATS searches (one per job title) and your remote board filters. Note new ads in a spreadsheet with the date, the exact location wording and the link.
- Tuesday: Check your list of target company careers pages.
- Wednesday: For each new ad, confirm Nigeria eligibility on the employer's own page. Drop anything restricted to countries you can't work in.
- Thursday: Tailor your CV for the two or three best matches. Mirror the ad's vocabulary (steward, lineage, catalogue, quality rules) only where it's true of your work.
- Friday: Follow up on applications older than two weeks, and spend an hour on your portfolio project or CDMP study.
Two applications that fit well beat twenty that ignore the location line or the seniority.
Nigerian practicalities before you accept a role
Time zones
EMEA roles suit Nigeria well. Lagos is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year, with no daylight saving. That puts Lagos on the same time as Central Europe in winter and one hour behind it in summer. Against London, Lagos is one hour ahead in winter and on the same time in summer. US-based governance teams are harder: New York is six hours behind Lagos in winter (from 1 November 2026) and five in summer, so late meetings are common.
Power and internet
Governance work involves many meetings with data owners, so dropped calls hurt. Plan for inverter or solar backup and two internet routes, such as a fixed line or Starlink plus a MiFi or phone hotspot.
Contract type, pay and tax
Some employers hire Nigerians as independent contractors. Others use an employer of record (EOR) to make you a local employee. The difference affects benefits, notice periods and who handles tax. Read contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you before signing. Then check how tax works for remote workers in Nigeria so you set money aside from the first payment.
Scams
Fake "data governance consultant" offers do exist. They follow the same pattern as other job scams: an interview over chat only, an offer within days, then a request for a fee or for your BVN and bank logins. No genuine employer charges you to get a job. Our page on spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians get remote data governance jobs with foreign companies?
Yes, when the ad allows EMEA, Africa, Nigeria or worldwide applicants and the employer can pay you as a contractor or through an employer of record. Many governance roles are restricted to the US, UK or a named list of European countries, so confirm eligibility on the employer's own ad before applying.
Are there entry-level remote data governance jobs?
Very few. The governance ads we checked in October 2026 asked for real data or governance experience, and leadership ads asked for ten or more years. Most people start as data analysts, compliance officers, data quality analysts or data engineers, then move across.
Is CDMP worth it for a Nigerian applicant?
It helps most when your job title doesn't show data experience, because it proves you know the DAMA-DMBOK framework that governance teams use. The Associate level needs one exam at $311 (about ₦424,000 at ₦1,362 to $1, October 2026). Pair it with a portfolio project, because a certificate alone rarely gets an interview.
Does NDPA compliance experience count as data governance experience?
Yes, if you describe it accurately. Filing NDPA compliance audit returns, keeping records of processing activities, supporting a data protection officer and answering NDPC requests are all governance tasks. Name the specific work and its outcome on your CV rather than writing "data protection compliance".
What tools should I learn for data governance roles?
Learn SQL first, then one data catalogue or governance tool such as Microsoft Purview, Collibra or Alation. Engineer-leaning roles also want Python and tools for access control and query engines. Canonical's October 2026 ad, for example, mentioned Apache Ranger and Trino.
What is the difference between data governance and data privacy jobs?
Data governance covers all of a company's data: ownership, definitions, quality, access and policy. Data privacy focuses on personal data and laws like GDPR and the NDPA. Privacy roles are often an easier first step for people from legal or compliance backgrounds.
Do remote data governance jobs require travel?
Some do. Canonical's ad asked applicants to confirm they could attend in-person company events two to four times a year, often abroad and needing visas. Check the ad and the application form for travel lines, and plan for visa lead times on a Nigerian passport.
Key takeaways
- Search by several titles (data steward, governance analyst, governance engineer, catalogue specialist), not just "data governance".
- ATS boards (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby) and company careers pages give the employer's own location wording. Aggregators can show closed ads.
- "EMEA" usually includes Nigeria, but an EMEA ad followed by a country list includes only those countries.
- Remote governance roles are mostly mid-level and senior. Most people move in from data analysis, compliance or data engineering.
- Nigerian NDPA compliance work counts as governance experience when you describe it in specific terms.
- CDMP costs $311 per exam as of October 2026. It helps most when paired with a public portfolio project.
- US salary benchmarks are not what Nigeria-based workers will be offered. Many employers set pay by location.
Next steps
Start with the tech listings on the WorkRemote jobs board. Search "data governance" or "data quality", then use "Get email updates" to receive a free daily email of new matching jobs. While the alerts run, build one portfolio project and rewrite your CV around the governance work you've already done. If you want someone to do that rewrite with you, WorkRemote Premium (₦29,999 a month) includes a CV and LinkedIn rewrite by our team. Neighbouring titles are worth searching too: our guides to data quality analyst jobs and data privacy analyst jobs cover them.
