Fully remote clinical research coordinator jobs do exist, and a small number are open to people outside the US. They are much rarer than the job title suggests, because most CRC work happens at a hospital or clinic with patients in the room. The remote roles focus on what can be done online: phone screening of trial volunteers, data entry into trial systems, regulatory paperwork and talking to sponsors. They usually run on US hours.
For a Nigerian with a health or life sciences background, that matters. The remote version of the job is real, but the ads normally ask for one or two years of coordination experience, knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and familiarity with specific trial software. This guide covers what the job involves, which remote versions exist, what employers ask for, how the hours work from Lagos, what affects pay and a realistic route in from Nigeria.
Quick answer
A remote clinical research coordinator handles the non-clinical side of a drug or device trial: screening volunteers by phone, scheduling and documenting remote visits, entering data into EDC and CTMS systems, managing regulatory documents and preparing for monitoring visits. Remote ads open to non-US applicants exist but are few. They usually want two or more years of CRC experience, GCP knowledge and US-hours availability. Always check the ad's location field before applying from Nigeria.
What a clinical research coordinator does
A clinical research coordinator runs the day-to-day work of a clinical trial at a research site. The principal investigator (usually a doctor) carries medical responsibility. The coordinator makes sure the study follows its protocol, the paperwork is right and participants are looked after.
O*NET, the US occupational database, lists the core CRC tasks as scheduling study subjects and checking their eligibility, monitoring compliance with protocols and regulations, overseeing informed consent, keeping study records, reporting adverse events, tracking enrolment, coordinating specimen handling and managing research budgets (O*NET OnLine, Clinical Research Coordinators 11-9121.01).
Some of those tasks can only be done in person, such as taking blood samples, shipping specimens and sitting with a patient while they sign a consent form. Others can be done from any desk with a stable connection. That split is why remote CRC jobs exist at all, and why so few are fully remote.
Key terms you'll see in ads
- Sponsor: the pharmaceutical, biotech or device company paying for the trial.
- CRO (contract research organisation): a company the sponsor hires to run all or part of the trial, such as IQVIA, Parexel or ICON.
- Site: the hospital, clinic or research centre where participants are seen.
- IRB or IEC: the ethics committee that approves and oversees the study (Institutional Review Board in the US, Independent Ethics Committee elsewhere).
- EDC (electronic data capture): the online system where trial data is entered, for example Medidata Rave or OpenClinica.
- CTMS (clinical trial management system): software that tracks visits, enrolment, documents and payments. CRIO and Clinical Conductor are common at US sites.
- ICH GCP: the international Good Clinical Practice guideline. Its latest version, E6(R3), now underpins the major certification exams.
Why most CRC jobs are not remote
Most clinical research coordinator vacancies are on-site because the job revolves around the participant's visit to the clinic. If a trial needs vital signs, blood draws, ECGs or drug dispensing, someone has to be physically there.
Hybrid ads are also common. US job boards often label a role "hybrid remote" when you work from home two days a week but must live near the hospital. For a Nigerian applicant, a hybrid US role is effectively an on-site US role. You would need the right to work in the US and a home within commuting distance.
The fully remote roles grew out of two changes:
- Decentralised clinical trials (DCTs): trials where some visits happen by video call, home nursing or wearable devices, so coordination can be done from anywhere.
- Remote site support: US research sites hiring offshore coordinators to handle data entry, regulatory binders and phone screening, while staff on the ground do the clinical work.
The second model is the one most likely to be open to someone in Nigeria.
What a real remote CRC job ad looks like
The clearest way to see the role is to read a live ad. Here is one we opened in October 2026.
UniTriTeam, a clinical research staffing and support firm, advertised a "Remote Clinical Research Coordinator (PST/EST/CST Timezone)" role for an unnamed US research site client. The ad lists the location as India, describes the job as "Remote – U.S. Time Zones Preferred" and says the role does not involve in-person patient interaction (UniTriTeam job ad on Greenhouse, checked October 2026).
The duties listed in that ad give a good picture of remote CRC work:
- Coordinating day-to-day trial operations and protocol compliance
- Scheduling, documenting and following up remote patient visits
- Screening potential participants by phone against inclusion and exclusion criteria
- Entering data into EDC and CTMS systems and resolving queries
- Managing regulatory documents and remote IRB submissions
- Preparing for sponsor and CRO monitoring visits, audits and inspections
- Supporting study start-up and close-out
The requirements are just as useful to read: two or more years of clinical research coordination or clinical operations experience, working knowledge of GCP, ICH and FDA regulations, CTMS experience (CRIO or Clinical Conductor strongly preferred), fluent written and spoken English, and Microsoft Office plus Zoom or Teams. A health sciences degree and an ACRP or SoCRA certification are listed as preferred.
Two details matter for Nigerian applicants. First, this ad was for India, not Nigeria, so it is an example of the job type, not an opening for you. Second, the application asks for a monthly salary expectation in US dollars, which tells you the employer expects to pay a monthly contractor-style rate rather than a US salary.
Another example: Advarra, a US research services company, posted a part-time "Clinical Research Coordinator, Remote" role in September 2025. It asked for a bachelor's degree with two years of relevant experience, or an associate's degree with four years, plus experience with participant consent and data collection. The ad did not state any country restrictions or pay (Advarra consulting jobs, checked October 2026). An ad that names no countries doesn't mean it is open worldwide. Ask before you invest time.
Remote jobs next to the CRC role that are easier to enter
If you search only for the exact title "clinical research coordinator", you will miss most of the remote openings. The same employers hire for narrower tasks, and these are often the realistic first step from Nigeria.
On the same UniTriTeam careers board in October 2026, the open roles included an EDC Data Entry Specialist (locations listed: Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Cairo and Mexico City), a Patient Recruiter on US time zones (several Latin American cities and Cairo) and a Clinical Research Project Manager (Cairo) (UniTriTeam careers board). None listed Nigeria, but the pattern is clear: offshore clinical research support is being hired from named countries, and Cairo shows that African locations are not excluded in principle.
| Role | What you do | Typical entry bar |
|---|---|---|
| EDC data entry specialist | Transcribe source documents into the trial database | Accuracy, medical terms, GCP basics |
| Patient recruiter | Call and pre-screen trial volunteers | Phone manner, US hours, eligibility criteria |
| Regulatory coordinator | Keep the regulatory binder and IRB submissions current | Document control, GCP, attention to detail |
| Clinical trial assistant (CTA) | Admin support for a CRO study team | Organisation, Office, trial terminology |
| Remote CRC | Full non-clinical coordination for one or more sites | 2+ years CRC experience, CTMS, GCP |
Clinical data roles are a separate track with their own path; see our guide to remote clinical data management jobs. If you are more interested in drug safety than trial operations, the pharmacovigilance specialist career guide covers that route.
Can you do a remote CRC job from Nigeria?
Yes, but only when the employer hires in Nigeria or accepts contractors based there, and only if you can work the hours they set. Most remote CRC ads fall into one of four groups:
- US-only remote: you must already be authorised to work in the US and often live in a state where the employer is registered. Not open to you from Nigeria.
- Country-specific home-based: CROs such as Parexel advertise "home-based" roles tied to one country. An aggregator page we checked in October 2026 showed Parexel clinical data and patient recruitment roles labelled "South Africa (Home-based)" (Himalayas, remote clinical research jobs, Nigeria filter). Home-based in South Africa means living in South Africa, even when an aggregator shows the job in a Nigeria search.
- Named offshore countries: as with UniTriTeam, the ad lists specific countries. Nigeria may or may not be on the list.
- Location not stated: you have to ask the recruiter directly before you spend an hour on the application.
The same Himalayas page showed a clinical research analyst role at Outcess marked "Nigeria only", which shows that some clinical research support work is hired locally too. Aggregator pages change daily, so treat these as examples and open the employer's own ad before applying.
If a foreign company does hire you, it will usually be as an independent contractor or through an employer of record. Our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements in Nigeria explains what each means for your rights and pay.
Working US hours from Lagos
The UniTriTeam ad asks for availability anywhere from US Eastern to US Pacific time. Lagos is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year, with no daylight saving.
| US shift (9am to 5pm) | Lagos hours, US summer time | Lagos hours, US winter time |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern | 2pm to 10pm | 3pm to 11pm |
| Central | 3pm to 11pm | 4pm to midnight |
| Pacific | 5pm to 1am | 6pm to 2am |
US clocks go back on 1 November 2026, so the later "winter" column applies from that date. An Eastern-hours role is manageable. A Pacific-hours role means working past midnight for half the year, and patient calls can't be dropped because NEPA took the light. Budget for an inverter or solar backup and two internet connections (for example a fibre or 4G router plus a MiFi or phone hotspot) before you accept a role with live patient calls.
Data privacy is part of the job
Remote CRCs handle protected health information: names, dates of birth and medical histories of trial participants. US employers will expect you to follow HIPAA-style confidentiality rules, use only their systems, work alone in a private room during calls and never save participant data on a personal phone or laptop. Expect a background check and confidentiality agreements. If you don't have a quiet, private workspace, say so honestly in interviews and explain how you will fix it.
Qualifications and skills employers ask for
No single degree is required, but employers strongly favour health and science backgrounds. In O*NET's survey of US CRCs, 60% of respondents said a bachelor's degree is needed for the job (O*NET OnLine). In Nigeria, the most relevant backgrounds are pharmacy, nursing, medical laboratory science, public health, biochemistry, microbiology and physiology.
GCP training (free, and the first thing to get)
Every clinical research employer expects GCP training. The Global Health Network offers a free, self-paced ICH Good Clinical Practice E6(R3) course on its Global Health Training Centre site. It has a preface and eight modules (about 180 minutes in total) and a final assessment, and you can download a certificate if you pass (course listing on the ECRIN ICSS directory, as of October 2026). Registration is required. Put the certificate and its date on your CV, and renew it when your employer's policy requires.
The CCRC certification (once you have the hours)
The Certified Clinical Research Coordinator (CCRC) credential from the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) is the best-known CRC certification. As of October 2026, ACRP says:
- You need 3,000 hours of verifiable, paid clinical research work on human subject research. Coursework, internships (paid or unpaid) and experience older than ten years don't count.
- A one-time 1,500-hour waiver may apply if you already hold an ACRP certification or complete a qualifying clinical research education programme.
- The exam has 125 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes and is based only on ICH guidelines, not US FDA or European EMA rules. ACRP exams moved to ICH E6(R3) from 15 July 2026.
- Fees are $435 for members or $485 for non-members in the early-bird period, and $460 or $600 in the regular period.
- PSI delivers the exam at test centres or by remote online proctoring. The certification lasts two years.
Source: ACRP CCRC certification page.
Because the exam tests ICH rather than US law, a coordinator who has worked on international trials in Nigeria can qualify on equal terms. At 40 hours a week, 3,000 hours is roughly 75 weeks, so about 18 months of full-time paid site work. At the regular non-member fee of $600, the exam costs about ₦817,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). Applying in the early-bird window and joining ACRP can lower that. The Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA) offers an alternative credential, the CCRP. Check its current eligibility and fees on SoCRA's own site. For a wider comparison, see our article on certifications for remote education and research jobs.
Software and practical skills
O*NET lists clinical trial management software as an in-demand technology for CRCs, alongside OpenClinica, Oracle Clinical, Microsoft Office and Google Meet (O*NET OnLine). The UniTriTeam ad specifically names CRIO and Clinical Conductor. You usually learn these on the job, but you can prepare by:
- Reading the vendor's public help pages and demo videos so the vocabulary is familiar
- Practising with OpenClinica's community edition or any free EDC sandbox you can find
- Getting fast and accurate in Excel, because query logs and enrolment trackers live there
- Learning medical terminology well enough to read a protocol's inclusion and exclusion criteria quickly
Soft skills carry real weight too. Recruiters screen hard on written English, phone manner with anxious volunteers and the discipline to document everything ("if it isn't written down, it didn't happen" is the industry rule).
How much remote CRC jobs pay
We couldn't find a reliable, published pay range for remote CRC roles open to Nigeria-based applicants, so we won't invent one. Here is what we can say.
- The UniTriTeam ad does not publish pay and asks applicants to state a monthly figure in dollars. Offshore coordination roles are priced for the hiring country, not at US salaries.
- O*NET's wage figure for clinical research coordinators ($167,220 a year median, 2025) is actually the US Bureau of Labor Statistics figure for the broader "Natural Sciences Managers" group (O*NET OnLine). It is not a CRC salary and certainly not what a Nigeria-based contractor would be offered. Don't quote it in a salary negotiation.
- Pay for remote workers in Nigeria is generally below US local pay for the same title. The gap shrinks as your experience, certification and software skills grow.
What moves your rate: years of paid coordination experience, CCRC or CCRP certification, hands-on CRIO or Clinical Conductor experience, the therapeutic area (oncology and rare diseases tend to need more experienced staff), whether you work US Pacific hours, and whether the role is full coordination or a narrower task like data entry.
Example (hypothetical): a US site offers a Nigeria-based remote coordinator $1,000 a month as a contractor. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦1,362,000 a month before fees and tax. From that you pay for your own power backup, data and equipment, and there's no employer pension or health cover. Compare offers on that net basis, not on the headline figure. For withdrawal options and fees, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. For tax on foreign income, see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
A realistic route in from Nigeria
Most people who get a remote CRC job already worked as an on-site coordinator. The steps below are the most practical way to build that experience.
- Complete the free ICH GCP E6(R3) course and add the certificate to your CV and LinkedIn.
- Get paid trial experience at a Nigerian site. Teaching hospitals, university research institutes and CRO-run studies in Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Enugu and other cities hire study coordinators, research assistants and data officers. Nigerian trials of medicines must also go through the national regulator (NAFDAC) and an approved ethics committee, so local experience teaches you the regulatory side directly.
- Log your hours from day one. Keep a record of studies, your role, dates and a supervisor who can verify your work. ACRP checks hours with employers.
- Ask for system exposure. Volunteer for EDC entry, query resolution and regulatory binder work, because these are exactly the remote-friendly tasks foreign employers hire for.
- Apply for remote adjacent roles (EDC data entry, patient recruiter, regulatory coordinator, CTA) while you build toward 3,000 hours.
- Sit the CCRC once you're eligible, using remote proctoring if there's no test centre near you.
- Target remote CRC ads whose location field includes Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or named offshore countries, and ask the recruiter directly when it's unclear.

What to put on your CV
Write it as a clinical research CV, not a hospital CV. For each study, list the phase, therapeutic area, number of participants you screened or enrolled, the systems you used (EDC, CTMS, ePRO) and any monitoring visits or audits you supported. Put GCP training and dates near the top. Our guide to writing a CV for international remote jobs covers layout and length for foreign recruiters.
Mistakes and red flags to watch for
- Applying to US-only ads. If the ad mentions a US state, US work authorisation or "hybrid", move on.
- Confusing training providers with employers. Many websites that rank for "remote clinical research coordinator jobs" sell paid courses and certificates. A paid certificate from an unknown provider is not the same as ACRP or SoCRA certification, and no course guarantees a job.
- Paying to be "placed". A legitimate clinical research employer never charges you to apply, interview or start. Requests for "onboarding fees", "training kit" payments or crypto transfers are scam signs. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the common patterns.
- Sending your passport or BVN too early. Share identity documents only after an offer from a company whose website, domain email and careers page you've checked yourself.
- Underrating the hours. A Pacific-hours role with live patient calls is a night job. Agree in writing which time zone you will cover before you sign.
- Overclaiming experience. Clinical research is audited. A CV that says you "managed" a study you only assisted on will come apart when a reference is checked.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Nigerian work as a remote clinical research coordinator for a US company?
Yes, when the company hires contractors in Nigeria and the role doesn't need US work authorisation or in-person patient contact. These roles exist but are uncommon. Read the location line on the official ad, and if Nigeria isn't mentioned, ask the recruiter before applying.
Do I need a medical degree to become a clinical research coordinator?
No. Coordinators come from pharmacy, nursing, laboratory science, public health and life sciences backgrounds. What employers screen for is GCP knowledge, attention to detail and verifiable trial experience.
Is there a free GCP certificate I can get from Nigeria?
Yes. The Global Health Network offers a free ICH GCP E6(R3) course online with a downloadable certificate if you pass the final assessment, as of October 2026. You need to register on the Global Health Training Centre website.
How many hours do I need for the CCRC exam?
ACRP requires 3,000 hours of verifiable, paid clinical research experience within the last ten years, as of October 2026. Internships and coursework don't count, and a one-time 1,500-hour waiver is available in some cases.
Can I take the ACRP exam without travelling abroad?
Yes. ACRP's exams are delivered by PSI either at a test centre or by remote online proctoring. Check PSI's system requirements, and make sure your power and internet will hold for the full 180 minutes.
What is the difference between a remote CRC and a clinical research associate (CRA)?
A CRC works for the research site and runs the study day to day. A CRA works for the sponsor or CRO and monitors sites to check the data and processes. CRA roles usually involve travel to sites, although some monitoring is now done remotely.
Are remote CRC jobs entry-level?
Rarely. Most remote CRC ads ask for at least two years of experience. Beginners have a better chance with EDC data entry, patient recruitment or clinical trial assistant roles, or an on-site research post in Nigeria first.
Will I be an employee or a contractor?
Most foreign employers hiring from Nigeria use contractor agreements or an employer of record. Your contract should state the hours, time zone, pay currency, payment date and how either side can end it.
Key takeaways
- Remote clinical research coordinator jobs cover the non-clinical half of trial coordination: phone screening, data entry, regulatory documents and sponsor communication.
- Fully remote roles open to non-US applicants exist but are few, and the ads we checked asked for two or more years of experience and US-hours availability.
- Check every ad's location line. "Home-based" usually means home-based in one named country.
- Start with the free ICH GCP E6(R3) course, then build paid trial hours at a Nigerian site toward the ACRP CCRC's 3,000-hour requirement.
- Data entry, patient recruiter, regulatory coordinator and CTA roles are the realistic remote entry points.
- No reliable published pay range exists for Nigeria-based remote CRCs, so compare offers on net income after your own costs.
