Remote Healthcare Administration Jobs for International Candidates: What Nigerians Can Actually Get
Which remote healthcare administration jobs accept international candidates from Nigeria, why many say US only, pay, CPC costs and how to find open roles.

International candidates can get remote healthcare administration jobs, but only a narrow part of the field is open to them. Medical billing, insurance verification, prior authorisation support, clinical documentation review and medical virtual assistant work are hired offshore, usually as contractor roles on US hours. Most hospital, insurer and payer jobs are still restricted to people living in the US or UK.
That gap explains why searching "remote medical billing jobs" from Lagos brings up hundreds of ads you can't apply to. This guide covers which healthcare admin roles really hire across borders and why the others say "US only". It also explains how offshore healthcare hiring is set up (mostly through staffing firms), what it pays compared with US benchmarks, which certificate is worth the money, and how to find the ads that name Nigeria. All job details below come from ads we opened in October 2026. Eligibility changes, so always check the live ad.
Quick answer
Yes, Nigerians can work remotely in healthcare administration for foreign employers. The roles that hire internationally are mostly back-office: medical billing, coding, insurance eligibility checks, prior authorisation, scheduling and clinical documentation. Expect contractor terms, US Eastern hours (2pm to 11pm in Lagos in winter) and offshore pay well below US medians. Many ads limit "offshore" to South Africa, the Philippines or Latin America, so confirm that Nigeria is named before you apply.
What "healthcare administration" means in a remote job ad
In remote hiring, healthcare administration covers the non-clinical work that keeps a clinic, hospital or insurer running. You don't treat patients. You handle the paperwork, money and records around their care.
The work usually falls into these groups:
| Work area | Typical remote tasks | Common job titles |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue cycle | Claims, billing, denials, payment posting | Medical biller, AR specialist |
| Coding | Turning diagnoses and procedures into ICD-10 and CPT codes | Medical coder |
| Insurance | Eligibility checks, benefits, prior authorisations | Insurance verification specialist |
| Front office | Scheduling, reminders, intake forms | Medical receptionist, patient coordinator |
| Records and documentation | Chart review, record requests, EHR data entry | Medical records specialist, documentation reviewer |
| Practice support | Inbox, calendar, referrals, reports | Medical virtual assistant, practice admin |
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes medical secretaries' work as including taking simple medical histories, arranging hospital admissions and processing insurance payments. It describes medical records specialists as people who review records, assign clinical codes, enter data into electronic health record (EHR) systems and protect patient confidentiality. Every one of those tasks can be done from a laptop. Whether it's allowed from Nigeria is a separate question.
Why so many healthcare admin jobs say "US only" or "UK only"
Healthcare admin roles carry more location restrictions than most remote work. The usual reason is patient-data law, not the employer's attitude to Nigerians.
US roles and HIPAA
HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is the US law protecting patient health information. Its rules define a "business associate" as anyone who creates, receives, maintains or transmits protected health information for a healthcare provider or insurer. The definition names claims processing, billing, data analysis, practice management and utilisation review, and it also covers subcontractors of those business associates.
That list covers nearly all remote healthcare admin work. A US clinic that hires you, or hires an outsourcing firm that hires you, takes legal responsibility for how you handle patient data. HIPAA doesn't ban offshore work. Even so, many US hospitals, insurers and government-funded programmes choose to keep patient data onshore as a policy or contract condition. That's why big employers' remote ads so often say "must reside in the US" or list specific states.
Smaller private practices, billing companies and healthcare technology firms are more willing to hire offshore. They're the main source of internationally open roles.
UK roles and UK GDPR
UK healthcare data falls under UK GDPR. The UK Information Commissioner's Office says that letting an organisation outside the UK access personal data counts as an international transfer, and gives the example of giving an overseas customer-services provider access to your systems. Each transfer needs a legal mechanism, such as an adequacy decision or a signed data transfer agreement plus a risk assessment.
Nigeria doesn't have UK adequacy status, so a UK employer would need extra paperwork to let you see patient records. Most NHS and UK private-clinic admin roles avoid this by hiring UK residents only. UK healthcare admin roles open to Nigeria do exist, but they're rarer than US ones.
Clinical roles are a different matter
Some ads look like admin but need a clinical licence in the patient's country, for example "telehealth nurse" or "utilisation review nurse". A Nigerian nursing or medical licence doesn't let you practise on US or UK patients. Leave those out of your admin job search unless the ad clearly says no licence is needed.
Which healthcare admin roles are realistically open from Nigeria
The table below sorts roles by how often we saw them open to candidates outside the US and UK. It's our judgement from the ads we reviewed in October 2026, not a statistic.
| Role | Openness to Nigeria-based candidates | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Medical virtual assistant | Fairly common | Often via staffing firms; inbox, scheduling, EHR updates |
| Medical billing and AR follow-up | Fairly common | Usually needs 2+ years' experience |
| Insurance verification and prior authorisation | Moderate | Payer portals and phone calls to US insurers |
| Clinical documentation review | Moderate, growing | Often suits nurses and doctors; some tied to AI evaluation |
| Medical coding | Moderate | Certification (CPC) strongly preferred |
| Medical receptionist and scheduling | Moderate | Voice work on US hours; accent and call quality tested |
| Hospital, insurer or NHS admin | Rare | Usually US-resident or UK-resident only |
Each role has its own guide. For the money and claims side, see our medical billing specialist career guide and our guide to becoming a medical coder remotely. Front-desk work is covered in remote medical receptionist jobs, and practice support in how to become a remote medical virtual assistant. Records roles are covered in remote health information management jobs.
What live ads showed in October 2026
The examples below come from ads we opened in October 2026. They show how offshore healthcare admin hiring tends to look. They aren't recommendations, and some may have closed.
- A Remote4Africa listing page for medical and health jobs showed two contract clinical documentation roles open to Egypt and Nigeria (posted 17 October), plus a medical scribe and clinical documentation virtual assistant role and a documentation educator role marked "anywhere in the world". The same page showed healthcare virtual assistant roles limited to South Africa and the Philippines (\$10.8k to \$13.2k a year) or South Africa and Colombia (\$16.8k to \$21.6k a year). Source: Remote4Africa medical and health category. The companies were not named publicly and full details were for members only.
- A Sagan Recruitment ad for Healthcare Administrative Support offered \$1,600 a month as an independent contractor on US business hours and asked for 2+ years' experience with patient records, verification and enrolment systems. The ad was tagged "Remote (LATAM)", even though Sagan says it recruits from Africa too. Source: Sagan ad on WeRemoto.
- A Lagos-based firm, Odixcity Consulting, advertised a permanent Medical Biller / Medical Coder role that referenced HIPAA. It asked for 3 to 5 years' experience, ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS knowledge, a CPC or CCS certificate ("strongly preferred") and a "laptop, internet router, and backup power supply". The ad had expired when we checked. Source: Odixcity ad on Africarrieres.
Three patterns run through these ads. First, "Africa" in offshore healthcare hiring often means South Africa. Second, the regions are usually spelled out, so an ad that says "LATAM" or "South Africa / Philippines" means exactly that. Third, Nigeria-based outsourcing firms serving US clients are a real second route. If you've been applying to US ads directly with no response, Nigerian billing companies may be a better first job.
How offshore healthcare admin hiring is set up
Knowing who actually employs you helps you spot real ads and judge an offer.
- Direct contractor with a US practice or billing company. You invoice the practice each month. This is common with small clinics found through job boards or LinkedIn.
- Through an offshore staffing firm. A recruiter (often in South Africa, the Philippines or Latin America) places you with a US client and pays you. Most "medical VA" ads work this way.
- Employee of a Nigerian outsourcing company. A Lagos or Abuja firm employs you and serves foreign clients. Pay is usually in naira or naira-linked, with Nigerian employment terms.
- Through an employer of record (EOR). A foreign company employs you via a platform such as Deel or Remote. This is less common for admin roles than for tech roles.
Each set-up has different tax, leave and notice implications. Our guide on contractor versus EOR employee status from Nigeria explains them. For tax on contractor income, see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.
Pay: US benchmarks versus what offshore candidates are offered
US pay figures are useful for context, but a Nigeria-based contractor won't be offered them.
| Figure | Amount | Source and basis |
|---|---|---|
| US median, medical secretaries and admin assistants | \$45,930 a year | BLS, May 2025, US workers |
| US median, medical records specialists | \$51,140 a year (\$24.59 an hour) | BLS, May 2025, US workers |
| Offshore healthcare admin support (LATAM ad) | \$1,600 a month | Sagan ad, contractor, opened Oct 2026 |
| Healthcare VA (South Africa/Philippines ads) | \$10.8k to \$13.2k a year | Remote4Africa listing, Oct 2026 |
| Medical practice VA (South Africa/Colombia ads) | \$16.8k to \$21.6k a year | Remote4Africa listing, Oct 2026 |
Sources: BLS secretaries and administrative assistants, BLS medical records specialists, plus the ads linked above.
The offshore ads above are for other regions, so treat them as rough comparisons, not quotes for Nigeria. At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to \$1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), \$1,600 a month works out to about ₦2,179,000 gross a month. Contractor pay is gross: you cover your own power, data, equipment, tax and transfer fees. For dollar pay in this specific role, see the medical billing specialist salary guide.
Pay usually rises with a coding certificate, experience in denials or AR, experience with named EHRs, and a willingness to work full US hours.
Skills, certificates and systems employers ask for
Healthcare admin hiring rewards proof. Recruiters want to see that you know US healthcare's vocabulary before they let you near a patient account.
Knowledge that comes up in almost every ad
- Medical terminology and anatomy basics. Nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists and health-records officers in Nigeria already have a head start.
- US insurance concepts: deductibles, copays, coordination of benefits, EOBs (explanation of benefits), and the difference between Medicare, Medicaid and commercial payers.
- Code sets: ICD-10-CM for diagnoses, CPT and HCPCS for procedures and supplies.
- Privacy habits: never storing patient data on personal devices, locking screens, using only the client's approved systems.
Systems worth naming on your CV
Ads often name EHR and practice-management systems such as eClinicalWorks, athenahealth, Kareo (Tebra), AdvancedMD or Epic, plus payer portals like Availity. You can't usually get trial access to these, so list the ones you've actually used. If you haven't used any, describe the equivalent task (claims submission, eligibility checks) instead.
Is the CPC certificate worth it from Nigeria?
The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential from AAPC is the one Nigerian ads mention most. As of October 2026, AAPC lists the CPC exam from \$425 and training from \$2,799. The exam can be taken online at home with a live remote proctor, and keeping the credential requires annual AAPC membership and 36 continuing education units every two years.
At the house rate (₦1,362 to \$1, 23 October 2026), the exam alone is about ₦579,000 and the training about ₦3.8 million. That's a lot of money, so think it through:
- Worth it if you're aiming for coding or billing roles and already know medical terminology. Coding ads often treat it as strongly preferred, as the Odixcity ad did.
- Probably not yet if you're aiming at medical VA, scheduling or insurance verification. Those roles hire on admin skills, English and reliability. Get one of those jobs first, then certify.
You may see "HIPAA certification" courses advertised. There's no single official HIPAA certificate issued by the US government. Short courses can help you learn the rules, but they don't carry the weight of a credential like the CPC. Employers usually run their own HIPAA training after hiring.
Hours, power and equipment: the Nigerian side
Time zones
Most offshore healthcare admin work follows US clinic hours, because that's when patients call and insurers answer the phone.
| Client hours | Lagos time (summer) | Lagos time (winter) |
|---|---|---|
| US Eastern, 8am to 5pm | 1pm to 10pm | 2pm to 11pm |
| US Pacific, 8am to 5pm | 4pm to 1am | 5pm to 2am |
| UK, 9am to 5pm | 9am to 5pm | 10am to 6pm |
US Eastern moves to winter time on 1 November 2026, so from that date an EST shift ends at 11pm in Lagos. Pacific clients (California practices are common in medical VA ads) mean working past midnight. Plan transport, safety and sleep before you accept.
Power and internet
Healthcare clients are strict about uptime because missed calls and late claims cost them money. South African ads we found said applicants without power backup would not be considered, and the Lagos billing ad listed a backup power supply as a requirement. In practice you need:
- An inverter, solar set-up or generator that covers your laptop, router and headset for a full shift.
- Two internet routes, such as a fibre or 4G/5G router plus a MiFi or phone hotspot from a different network. Some clients ask for a speed-test screenshot.
- A noise-cancelling USB headset and a quiet room, since many roles involve calling US insurers.
- A laptop with a recent operating system. Many clients use remote desktops or virtual machines that need decent RAM.
How to find and apply for internationally open roles
- Pick one target role. Choose billing, verification, medical VA or documentation, based on your background. A Nigerian nurse fits documentation review or prior authorisation. A health-records officer fits coding or records roles. A customer-service agent fits scheduling or patient support (see remote healthcare customer support jobs).
- Search with region words. Add "worldwide", "EMEA", "Africa", "Nigeria" or "offshore" to role titles. Our explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad helps you read the results.
- Read the location line first. Skip any ad that names other countries only, asks for US work authorisation, or lists US states. Our guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents walks through the clues.
- Look at Nigerian outsourcing firms. Lagos and Abuja billing and revenue-cycle companies serving US clients are a realistic first step and a source of the 2+ years' experience offshore ads ask for.
- Rewrite your CV in US healthcare terms. Swap "handled patient files" for "verified insurance eligibility for 40 patients a day" if that's what you did. Name the systems and code sets you know.
- Prepare for tests. Expect typing tests, a mock insurance call, a coding exercise or a short written task about a denied claim.
- Agree pay terms in writing. Before you start, confirm the currency, pay date, payment method, notice period and who supplies software licences. Getting paid is covered in how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria.
Example (hypothetical): Amaka worked for four years as a health-records officer in a Lagos hospital. She takes a medical terminology refresher, learns ICD-10 basics and applies to a Lagos billing company serving US clinics. After a year of AR follow-up she has the US experience offshore ads ask for and applies to contractor roles on EST hours, then decides whether the CPC is worth paying for.
Red flags specific to healthcare admin ads
Healthcare scams have their own patterns, on top of the general warning signs in our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria:
- Paid "HIPAA certification" or "billing software licence" required before an interview. Real employers train you after hiring and provide their own systems.
- Requests to process payments or "reimbursements" through your own bank account. That's money laundering risk, not billing.
- Asking for your BVN, NIN or bank login at the application stage. Identity checks come after an offer, through a named platform.
- Interviews held only on Telegram or WhatsApp text, with no video call and no company domain email.
- Pay far above the offshore ranges above for no experience. \$25 an hour is a US wage. An offshore ad offering it to beginners deserves suspicion.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Nigerian work remotely for a US hospital?
Rarely directly. Large US hospitals and insurers usually require US residence for remote admin roles. Your realistic routes are smaller practices, billing companies, healthcare tech firms and outsourcing companies that serve them.
Do I need a medical background for remote healthcare admin jobs?
No, not for most roles. Medical VA, scheduling and insurance verification roles hire on admin skills, English and reliability, though medical terminology helps. Clinical documentation review is the exception: those roles often prefer nurses or doctors.
Is the AAPC CPC exam available in Nigeria?
AAPC offers the CPC exam online with a live remote proctor, as well as at test centres. Its page lists an international students section but doesn't spell out country rules, so confirm with AAPC before you pay. As of October 2026 the exam starts at \$425.
Why do medical VA ads say "South Africa or Philippines only"?
The staffing firms behind many medical VA ads are registered in those countries and can only pay and contract workers there. It's a business set-up limit, so applying from Nigeria won't work. Look for ads that name Nigeria or say "worldwide".
What hours will I work in a US healthcare admin job from Lagos?
Usually US Eastern business hours. From 1 November 2026 that's about 2pm to 11pm in Lagos, and 1pm to 10pm once US daylight saving starts in March. West Coast clients can mean shifts ending after 1am.
Are remote healthcare admin jobs from Nigeria paid in dollars?
Contractor roles with foreign practices and staffing firms are usually paid in dollars. Nigerian outsourcing firms often pay in naira. Check the currency and payment method in writing before you start.
Do UK healthcare admin jobs hire from Nigeria?
Sometimes, but less often than US ones. UK GDPR treats giving overseas workers access to patient data as an international transfer that needs extra safeguards, so many UK employers simply hire UK residents.
Do I need my own HIPAA certificate?
No official government HIPAA certificate exists, and employers normally provide their own training. A short course can help you discuss privacy confidently in interviews, but don't pay a "recruiter" for one as a hiring condition.
Key takeaways
- Healthcare admin roles open to international candidates are mostly back-office: billing, coding, verification, prior authorisation, documentation and medical VA work.
- US privacy rules (HIPAA business associate obligations) and UK GDPR transfer rules are the main reasons so many ads are restricted to US or UK residents.
- "Offshore" healthcare ads often mean South Africa, the Philippines or Latin America, so only apply where Nigeria or "worldwide" is named.
- Offshore pay is far below US medians of about \$46,000 to \$51,000 a year (BLS, May 2025). Expect contractor terms and US hours.
- Nigerian billing and outsourcing firms are a practical way to get the 2+ years' experience offshore contractor ads ask for.
- Backup power, two internet routes and a good headset are hiring requirements, not extras.
