Remote medical billing specialist salary for Nigerians

Remote medical billing from Nigeria pays roughly ₦250,000 to ₦300,000 a month in Nigeria-based roles serving US practices, going by a December 2025 Lagos ad, which is about $2,250 to $2,700 a year at about ₦1,333 to the dollar in October 2026. US-based billers earn around $48,500, but those jobs are mostly closed to people outside the US.

The gap is wide and honest about the market: offshore billing is priced against the Philippines and India, not Texas.

Where these figures come from

Entry
Published range in a December 2025 Lagos ad for a remote billing coordinator at a US psychiatric practice: ₦250,000 to ₦300,000 a month, converted at about ₦1,333 to the dollar. The ad asked for 3+ years' experience, so true beginners may be offered less.
Mid
From the top of the Lagos ad up to what offshore billing roles paid in dollars advertise: a remote dental billing specialist role (MODPractice LLC) on Indeed Philippines listed $725 a month ($8,700 a year). Philippine offshore teams compete for the same US work, so their dollar ads are a fair ceiling for experienced offshore billers.

How that compares

Reference points from other markets. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually below US and UK local pay.

  • US median, billing and posting clerks (BLS, May 2025) (bls.gov)$48,500 a year
  • US average, AAPC Certified Professional Biller (2025 survey) (aapc.com)$63,874 a year
  • Lagos remote billing coordinator, low end of ad (Dec 2025) (hotnigerianjobs.com)₦250,000 a month
  • Offshore dental billing specialist ad (Indeed Philippines) (ph.indeed.com)$725 a month

What affects your pay

  • Who the employer is. A Nigerian outsourcing company pays naira salaries; a US practice hiring you directly as a contractor can pay in dollars, but those roles are rarer.
  • Certification. AAPC's 2025 survey shows CPB holders in the US averaging $63,874 against $55,721 for non-certified respondents. Offshore employers pay less in absolute terms, but they also sort CVs by certificate.
  • Specialty. Behavioural health, anaesthesia and hospital (UB-04) billing have trickier rules, and people who know them are harder to replace.
  • What you can do alone. Billers who can handle denials and appeals without supervision are paid more than those who only do charge entry or eligibility checks.
  • Shift. Overnight and weekend shifts sometimes carry an allowance; ask.

Negotiating your offer

Ask what the pay covers before you talk numbers: is it a salary with PAYE and pension, or a contractor fee you'll pay tax on yourself? Ask who provides the laptop, internet and power backup, and whether there's a monthly allowance for data and fuel. Many offshore employers will move on allowances more easily than on base pay.

If you have a CPB or CMRS and can show a denial rate or AR figure you improved, quote it. "I cut our over-90-day AR from 31% to 18% in four months" is the kind of line that moves an offer.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian earn US-level pay as a remote medical biller?

Rarely. Most US-rate remote billing jobs are open only to people living in the US. Nigeria-based roles are priced against offshore markets like the Philippines, so expect a fraction of the US figure.

How much does a medical biller earn in the US?

The BLS puts the median for billing and posting clerks at $48,500 a year (May 2025). AAPC's 2025 survey gives an average of $63,874 for certified professional billers.

Are remote billing jobs in Nigeria paid in dollars?

Most Nigeria-based ones are paid in naira, like the Lagos ad quoted on this page. Dollar pay usually means a direct contract with a foreign practice or agency, paid through Deel, Payoneer or a domiciliary account.

Does a CPB certificate increase pay?

In the US data, yes: AAPC reports certified respondents earning more than non-certified ones. In Nigeria it mostly helps you get hired and move up faster.
