People office work day

You can find remote health information management jobs from Nigeria, but most of them won't come from the US hospital ads that fill Google. Those ads usually require you to live in the US. The roles open to Nigerians tend to come through offshore healthcare staffing firms, EHR (electronic health record) migration projects and clinical documentation contracts, and many are labelled "medical virtual assistant" or "documentation reviewer" rather than "HIM specialist".

That matters if you trained as a health records officer, hold an ND or HND in Health Information Management, or have worked in a records department. Your skills transfer well. The problem is that you're searching under the wrong titles and applying to ads you can't legally take.

This guide covers the HIM roles that can be done remotely, which credentials actually help a Nigerian applicant, where to search, how to check eligibility, what the jobs pay and how to set yourself up to handle patient records safely from home.

Quick answer

Remote health information management jobs open to Nigerians do exist, but they're a minority. Most US medical records ads require US residence because of patient-privacy contracts. Look for roles posted by offshore healthcare staffing firms, EHR migration work and clinical documentation contracts that list Nigeria, Africa or "global" eligibility. Show EHR experience, medical terminology and HIPAA awareness, and confirm eligibility and the payment method on the official ad before applying.

What remote health information management work involves

Health information management (HIM) is the work of collecting, organising, protecting and releasing patient records. In Nigeria the job title is usually health records officer. In the US it's medical records specialist, health information technician or HIM specialist. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) groups these under medical records specialists and notes that the work is done at a computer with no direct patient care. That's why parts of it can be done remotely.

Remote HIM roles and what they do

RoleWhat you doRemote from Nigeria?
Release of information (ROI) specialistProcess requests for patient records from lawyers, insurers and patientsRarely; usually US-only
Medical records specialistIndex, file, correct and retrieve digital chartsSometimes, through offshore firms
EHR migration assistantMove charts from an old system into a new oneYes, in some VA and practice roles
Data abstractor or registrarPull data from charts into registriesRarely; often needs US credentials
Clinical documentation reviewerCheck chart notes for accuracy and completenessSometimes; often needs clinicians
Medical coderTurn diagnoses and procedures into codesYes, with certification

Medical coding and medical billing sit next to HIM but are separate careers. If coding appeals to you, our guide to becoming a remote medical coder covers it properly, and the medical billing specialist career page covers the billing side.

HIM job titles you'll see in ads

Employers rarely say "health information management" in the title. Search for all of these:

  • Release of information specialist (often shortened to "ROI specialist")
  • Medical records specialist, clerk or coordinator
  • HIM specialist or HIM technician
  • Chart retrieval specialist
  • Health information technician
  • Clinical documentation specialist or reviewer
  • Medical scribe (overlaps heavily with records work)
  • Healthcare virtual assistant or medical practice virtual assistant

Who actually hires remote HIM workers from Nigeria

This is the honest part. Most remote medical records jobs advertised by US hospitals, health systems and records companies are remote within the US. They handle protected health information under HIPAA (the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and many organisations keep that work onshore through their contracts and internal security policies. When an aggregator shows a "remote" HIM specialist job with an hourly wage in dollars, assume it's US-only until the official ad says otherwise.

The routes that are open to applicants outside the US

The roles that do accept applicants from outside the US tend to fall into three groups.

Offshore healthcare staffing and VA firms. These companies place workers abroad with US practices, and the work often includes records. As of October 2026, an Assist World ad for a Medical Practice Virtual Assistant listed South Africa and Colombia as locations. Its core task was moving client charts and clinical data from Practice Fusion and paper files into SimplePractice without losing records. That is HIM work under a VA job title. Nigeria wasn't listed, so a Nigerian applicant couldn't take that role. The type of role is still the one to look for.

Global medical scribe and records roles. As of October 2026, Wing's Bilingual Medical Scribe ad was tagged "Global" but showed Bogotá as the location. It asked for a medical or pharmaceutical degree, C1 English, a second language and EHR skills in Epic, PointClickCare or DocNow. The tasks included entering medical records and sending them to providers. "Global" next to a city name is a mixed signal, which is why you should always read the full ad.

Clinical documentation and AI evaluation contracts. As of October 2026, the Remote4Africa medical and health category showed contract roles open to Egypt or Nigeria, including an Inpatient Clinical Documentation Reviewer. The board hides company names from non-members. Several of these contracts are aimed at doctors, so read the requirements before assuming a records background is enough.

Nigerian health tech companies and EMR vendors also hire records people, but that is usually on-site or hybrid work in Nigeria rather than dollar-paid remote work. For the wider picture of healthcare admin roles open to foreign applicants, see remote healthcare administration jobs for international candidates. For VA-style medical roles specifically, see how to become a remote medical virtual assistant.

Old listings: check the company's own board

Aggregators keep reposting jobs after they close. In 2026 several boards carried a "Medical Records and Health Information Manager" role at Backpack Healthcare, some describing it as open worldwide. When we opened Backpack Healthcare's own Greenhouse board in October 2026, the role was no longer listed, and every location shown was in the US or marked remote with no country stated. Before you spend an evening on a cover letter, open the company's own careers page.

How to get a remote medical records specialist job

A medical records specialist is the most common HIM job title in remote ads. Employers hiring for it from abroad usually want the same five things.

  1. EHR experience you can name. Write "Epic", "PointClickCare", "SimplePractice", "eClinicalWorks" or whichever system you've used, not "electronic records". If you've only used a Nigerian hospital system or an open-source one such as OpenMRS, name it and describe what you did in it.
  2. Medical terminology. You should be able to read a discharge summary or referral letter without guessing. Records specialists don't code for a living, but ICD-10 familiarity is listed in many ads (the Wing ad names CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS).
  3. Privacy discipline. The Assist World ad asks for "strict adherence to HIPAA, privacy laws, and medical-legal boundaries". You don't need a HIPAA certificate to show this. Describe how you handled confidential records: access logs, release forms, who could see what.
  4. Accuracy at volume. Records work is judged on errors. Use numbers if you have them: charts processed a day, backlog cleared, error rate.
  5. Clear written English. Much of the job is email and secure messaging with clinics, patients and lawyers.

Turning Nigerian records experience into a remote CV

Example (hypothetical): Chiamaka has an HND in Health Information Management and four years in the records unit of a private hospital in Enugu. Her old CV said "Responsible for patient records". Her remote-ready version reads:

  • Retrieved and filed outpatient records for about 150 patients a day across 12 clinics
  • Helped migrate paper folders into the hospital's new EMR, checking each chart against the index before closing the paper file
  • Processed records requests from insurers and HMOs, checking signed consent before release
  • Registered with the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN)

The HMO requests are the line that matters most to a foreign employer: that's release-of-information work. The EMR migration line matches the chart-migration tasks in the Assist World ad. A WorkRemote Premium member can have the team rewrite a CV and LinkedIn profile like this (see what changes in a CV review).

Credentials: RHIT, RHIA, CCA and Nigerian registration

Credentials matter more in HIM than in most admin careers, but the best-known US ones are hard to reach from Nigeria.

RHIT and RHIA (AHIMA)

The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) come from AHIMA, the American Health Information Management Association. As of October 2026, AHIMA's RHIT eligibility rules require you to complete an associate-level HIM programme accredited by CAHIIM (the US accreditor), or to graduate from an HIM programme approved by a foreign association with a reciprocity agreement. The associations named are CHIMA (Canada), KMRA (Korea) and HIMAA (Australia). Nigeria isn't on that list. Health informatics programmes aren't accepted for the RHIT either.

The RHIT exam costs $229 for AHIMA members and $299 for non-members. It must be taken at a Pearson VUE test centre. In practice, a Nigerian ND or HND graduate can't sit the RHIT without first completing a CAHIIM-accredited programme, and those are mostly US-based.

CCA: the AHIMA credential you can actually sit

The Certified Coding Associate (CCA) is the AHIMA credential with the lowest bar. As of October 2026, AHIMA's CCA page says you need only a high school diploma. Coding training or six months of coding experience is recommended but not required. The exam costs $199 for members and $299 for non-members, is taken at a Pearson VUE centre, and AHIMA says it is offered in the US and abroad. From 1 May 2026, candidates must bring approved 2026 code books, and anyone without them forfeits the fee.

The CCA is a coding credential, not a records one. It's still useful to records specialists because many ads ask for ICD-10 familiarity. Check that a Pearson VUE centre near you offers the exam before paying. Exam fee, books and travel add up, so treat it as a planned investment, not an impulse buy.

HRORBN registration in Nigeria

In Nigeria, health records practice is regulated by the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN), set up under the Health Records Officers (Registration, etc.) Act. In a July 2025 Federal Ministry of Information release, the Minister of State for Health said that practising without registration, and hiring unregistered practitioners, is unlawful. The release also said the board had digitised its registration processes and was asked to build a nationwide practitioner database.

A foreign employer won't require HRORBN registration. Listing it on your CV still shows you hold a regulated professional qualification, and you'll need it for any Nigerian records job you keep while building remote work.

Where to search, and the exact terms to use

Generic "remote jobs" searches bury HIM work. These search strings work better on Google and on job boards:

  • "medical records" remote "Africa" OR "worldwide" OR "global"
  • "healthcare virtual assistant" EHR remote
  • "chart migration" OR "EHR migration" virtual assistant
  • "clinical documentation" remote contract Nigeria
  • site:jobs.lever.co "medical" "virtual assistant"
  • site:job-boards.greenhouse.io "medical records" remote

How to check that an HIM ad is open to you

Run every ad through these checks before applying. They take five minutes.

  1. Location line. Look for Nigeria, Africa, EMEA, "global" or "anywhere". "Remote, US" or a list of US states means no. Our guide on how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents covers wording tricks in detail.
  2. Mixed signals. A "Global" tag beside a single city, as in the Wing ad, needs a direct question to the recruiter before you invest time.
  3. Payment method. The Assist World ad required candidates to be paid through Wise and listed the countries where that worked. A payment requirement can quietly exclude you. See how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria for the apps that do work here.
  4. Licence requirements. "RHIT required", "CTR required" (cancer registrar) or "active RN licence" rules most Nigerian applicants out. "RHIT preferred" doesn't.
  5. Hours. US Central time ads (CST) run 7 hours behind Lagos in winter and 6 in summer.
  6. Contract type. Most offshore HIM roles hire you as an independent contractor, not an employee. Read contractor vs employee for Nigerians before signing.

What remote HIM jobs pay: US benchmarks vs offshore offers

Start with the benchmark, then adjust your expectations. As of May 2025, BLS puts the median pay for US medical records specialists at $51,140 a year. The lowest 10% earned under $37,000 and the top 10% over $81,150. That is US pay for US-based workers. Remote roles for Nigeria-based workers are usually priced well below it.

The offshore ads we opened show what that looks like in practice:

Ad (checked October 2026)Pay statedIn naira at ₦1,362/$1
Assist World medical practice VA (South Africa or Colombia, 4 to 10 years' experience)$1,400 to $1,800 a month₦1,906,800 to ₦2,451,600
Wing bilingual medical scribe (Global/Bogotá)$715 to $900 a month₦973,830 to ₦1,225,800
BLS US median, for comparisonabout $4,262 a monthabout ₦5,805,000

Naira figures use the CBN NFEM rate of ₦1,362 to $1 on 23 October 2026. The figures are gross, before platform withdrawal fees and tax. These are two ads, not a market average: don't present them in a salary negotiation as "the rate". They do show the pattern. Offshore records-related roles in 2026 tend to pay several hundred to under $2,000 a month, with pay rising with experience, EHR skills and languages.

On tax, contractor income earned from abroad still has Nigerian tax implications; see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Setting up to handle patient records from Nigeria

Health records employers are stricter about your setup than most remote employers, because a leaked chart is a legal problem for them.

Equipment and internet

The Wing ad sets a typical baseline: a noise-cancelling USB headset, a working webcam, a computer with at least a 1.8 GHz processor and 4GB RAM plus a backup machine, 25 Mbps wired internet as the main connection and 10 Mbps as backup. In Nigeria that means:

  • A main fibre or wired line, plus a MiFi or phone hotspot from a different network as backup
  • An inverter or solar setup that can carry your laptop and router through a full shift, because NEPA cuts during a US-hours shift are the norm
  • A second laptop, even an old one, if the ad asks for a backup machine

Privacy at home

Work in a room where nobody can read your screen. Lock the screen whenever you step away. Never download charts to a personal device or send them over WhatsApp, even to "save time". The Assist World ad named Microsoft Teams, Slack and Google Workspace as its HIPAA-compliant tools; use only the systems your employer gives you.

Time zones

Most HIM clients are US practices. An 8am to 5pm CST shift (the Wing ad's hours) runs from 2pm to 11pm in Lagos while the US is on standard time, which it is from 1 November 2026. When US clocks move forward, the same shift runs from 3pm to midnight. Plan transport, meals and power backup around that.

Mistakes and scams to avoid in medical records jobs

Health records attracts its own types of scam, because "data entry for hospitals" sounds legitimate and needs no experience.

  • Paying for "HIPAA certification" to be hired. There's no official HIPAA certificate that employers require from offshore workers. Free training from your employer is normal. A recruiter who demands you buy a certificate before an interview is selling you something.
  • "Medical data entry" with a starter-kit fee. Real employers don't charge you for software, logins or training materials. See how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.
  • Applying to every US HIM ad. Ignoring "US only" wastes applications and can get your email flagged by applicant tracking systems.
  • Calling yourself RHIT-eligible. Unless you've completed a CAHIIM or reciprocity-approved programme, you aren't. Overstating credentials in healthcare is easy for employers to check and ends applications fast.
  • Hiding your Nigerian HIM qualification. An HND plus HRORBN registration is real professional training. Explain it in one line instead of leaving foreign recruiters to guess.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Nigerian work remotely as a medical records specialist for a US company?

Yes, but usually through an offshore staffing firm or a role that explicitly accepts applicants outside the US, not through US hospital ads. Most US medical records ads require US residence. Look for "global", "Africa" or a country list that includes Nigeria on the official ad.

Do I need RHIT to get a remote HIM job?

No. Most offshore roles open to Nigerians ask for EHR experience, medical terminology and privacy awareness instead. RHIT requires a CAHIIM-accredited or reciprocity-approved programme, which most Nigerian graduates don't have, so build EHR skills and consider the CCA if you want an AHIMA credential.

Is health records in Nigeria the same as health information management?

Largely yes. Nigeria's health records officers do what US employers call HIM or medical records work, and the profession is regulated by HRORBN. The difference abroad is mostly job titles and the software used.

How much do remote medical records jobs pay Nigerians?

Offshore ads checked in October 2026 ranged from about $715 to $1,800 a month, depending on experience and languages. The US median for medical records specialists was $51,140 a year in May 2025, but that is a US benchmark, not what Nigeria-based workers are offered.

Which EHR systems should I learn?

Learn the ones that appear in the ads you're targeting. The ads we opened named Epic, PointClickCare, DocNow, SimplePractice and Practice Fusion. SimplePractice and Practice Fusion are common in small US practices, which are the clients offshore VA firms tend to serve.

Is a remote medical records job the same as medical coding?

No. Records specialists organise, correct, retrieve and release charts, while coders turn clinical notes into billing codes such as ICD-10 and CPT. Coding usually pays more but needs a coding certification; see our medical coder salary and career guide for that route.

Can I do remote HIM work with only an ND or HND?

Yes. Offshore records and medical VA roles rarely require a degree, though some, such as the Wing scribe role, ask for a medical or pharmaceutical degree. Experience and named EHR skills usually count for more than the level of your certificate.

Key takeaways

  • Most US remote HIM and medical records ads are US-only, so target offshore staffing firms, EHR migration roles and documentation contracts that list Nigeria, Africa or global eligibility.
  • Search under VA, scribe, ROI and documentation titles as well as "health information management".
  • RHIT and RHIA are tied to CAHIIM or reciprocity programmes that Nigerian HIM graduates usually can't use; the CCA only needs a high school diploma.
  • Offshore records-related ads checked in October 2026 paid about $715 to $1,800 a month, far below the $51,140 US median.
  • Name your EHR systems, show your privacy discipline and list HRORBN registration on your CV.
  • Check the location line, payment method, licence requirements and shift hours on the employer's own page before applying.
