Remote clinical data management jobs do exist and are advertised every week, mainly by contract research organisations (CROs), pharmaceutical companies and clinical software firms. The hard part for a Nigerian applicant isn't finding the ads. Most of them are tied to a named country, such as "Remote, US" or "home-based in South Africa", so you need to know how to filter and where else to look.
Clinical data management (CDM) is the work of collecting, checking and cleaning the data from clinical trials so it can be analysed and sent to regulators. It suits pharmacists, nurses, lab scientists, biostatistics and public health graduates who are careful with detail and comfortable with software.
This guide covers where CDM roles are posted, how to read location rules on the ads, what employers ask for (based on live ads we opened in October 2026), which certificates are worth paying for, and how to get the experience that remote employers expect.
Quick answer
To find remote clinical data management jobs, search CRO and pharma careers sites and job boards for titles like "Clinical Data Manager", "Clinical Data Associate" and "Data Management Lead", then check where applicants may live. Most remote CDM ads are limited to specific countries. Entry roles usually ask for a science degree and one to two years of trial data experience. Building that experience locally first is often the realistic route.
What a clinical data manager actually does
A clinical data manager makes sure the data collected at trial sites is complete, accurate and ready for statisticians. The job is mostly done on screen, which is why so much of it can be remote.
A US job ad from Celerion for a fully remote Clinical Data Manager (opened October 2026) lists the work clearly: owning data management for studies from start-up to database lock, managing the case report form (CRF) lifecycle, writing data management plans and CRF completion guidelines, cleaning data and managing queries, reconciling third-party data, and training site staff on the electronic data capture system (Celerion job ad).
A few terms come up in nearly every ad:
- EDC (electronic data capture): the software trial sites use to enter patient data. Medidata Rave, Veeva EDC and Oracle's clinical tools are common names in ads.
- CRF or eCRF: the case report form, meaning the screens or pages where each patient's trial data is recorded.
- Query: a question raised on a data point that looks wrong or missing, sent back to the site to fix.
- Database lock: the point at which the trial data is final and frozen for analysis.
- SAE reconciliation: checking that serious adverse events in the trial database match the drug safety database.
- GCP: Good Clinical Practice, the international ethical and quality standard for trials, set out in the ICH E6 guideline.
- 21 CFR Part 11: the US rule on electronic records and signatures. It comes up often in ads because so many trials are filed with the US FDA.
If you prefer analysing health data to cleaning trial data, look at our health data analyst career guide. If drug safety reporting appeals to you more, see the pharmacovigilance specialist guide. The roles overlap, but they hire through different channels.
Job titles to search for
CDM ads use several names for similar work, so searching only "clinical data manager" will miss many of them. Use these titles, roughly from junior to senior:
| Title | Typical level | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Clinical Data Associate / Coordinator | Entry, 0 to 2 years | Data review, query handling, data entry checks |
| Clinical Data Manager | 1 to 3+ years | Owns data for one or more studies |
| Senior Clinical Data Manager | 3 to 5+ years | Complex studies, sponsor contact, mentoring |
| Data Management Lead / Data Team Lead | 5+ years | Leads delivery across a study or programme |
| Manager, Clinical Data Management | 7+ years | Manages people and budgets |
| Clinical Database Programmer / EDC Developer | Technical | Builds the study database and edit checks |
| Medical Coder (MedDRA, WHODrug) | Specialist | Codes adverse events and medications |
The year bands come from the live ads we opened. Celerion asks for 1 to 3 years for a CDM role, EDETEK asks for at least 2 years for a senior CDM role, and Alimentiv asks for about 7 to 9 years for a manager role. Other employers will set their own levels.
Medical coding is a sideways route that many people miss. Our medical coder career guide covers it, but note that US healthcare billing coding (ICD-10, CPT) is a different job from trial coding (MedDRA, WHODrug).
Can you get a remote CDM job while living in Nigeria?
Yes, but fewer roles are open to you than the job counts on aggregator sites suggest. Most remote CDM vacancies are "remote within a country". The employer has a legal entity, payroll and data-protection setup in that country and won't hire outside it.
Here's what we found when we opened live ads in October 2026:
| Employer (ad opened) | Where applicants may live | Nigeria eligible? |
|---|---|---|
| Celerion, Clinical Data Manager | Remote, US | No |
| EDETEK, Senior Clinical Data Manager | Mexico, Argentina, Brazil | No |
| Alimentiv, Manager, CDM | Listed cities in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Moldova | No |
Sources: Celerion, EDETEK, Alimentiv. These are examples of how CDM ads are written. They aren't a list of employers to avoid. Each company also posts roles in other locations.
In the searches we ran for this article, we didn't find a live CDM ad that named Nigeria as an eligible location. That doesn't mean they never appear. It means you should expect to filter through many country-locked ads, and you should treat any "worldwide" CDM ad with both interest and care.
How to read the location line on a CDM ad
- "Home-based in [country]" or "Remote, [country]": you must already live in that country and usually have the right to work there. Large CROs use this wording a lot.
- "Remote, EMEA": check the full list of countries. EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) on a CDM ad often means a handful of European countries. Our article on what EMEA means in a remote job ad explains this in more detail.
- "Remote" with no country: open the ad and the application form. The country dropdown, the salary currency and the benefits section usually show where the employer can hire.
- Contract or freelance: some sponsors and smaller data firms hire CDM contractors across borders. This is where Nigeria-based applicants have the best chance with foreign employers.

Where to look for remote clinical data management jobs
CRO and pharma careers sites
CROs run trials for drug companies and employ most clinical data managers. The big CROs (IQVIA, ICON, Parexel, Syneos Health, Medpace, Fortrea and Thermo Fisher's PPD business, for example) each have their own careers site with a country filter. Filter for "remote" or "home-based" and for "data management". Then set the country to Nigeria, and separately to "Africa" or "EMEA", to see what comes up. A Nigeria filter that returns nothing is useful information too.
Applicant tracking systems searched directly
Many smaller CROs and clinical tech firms post through Greenhouse, Lever, Workable or Ashby. Google lets you search those systems directly. Try queries like these:
site:jobs.lever.co "clinical data" remotesite:job-boards.greenhouse.io "clinical data manager"site:jobs.workable.com "clinical data" remote"clinical data" remote "Nigeria" OR "Africa" OR "anywhere"
Change "clinical data manager" to "clinical data associate", "data management lead" or "EDC" to catch the other titles.
General remote job boards
Aggregators collect many CDM ads in one place but rarely make location rules obvious. Use them to find the ad, then always apply through the employer's own page. The medical and health listings on WorkRemote only include roles that state applicants may live in Nigeria, and each one shows where applicants may live.
LinkedIn and the professional community
CDM is a small field, so recruiters often post roles on LinkedIn before they appear on boards. Follow CRO recruiters and the Society for Clinical Data Management (SCDM). Add "Clinical Data Management", your EDC systems and "GCP" to your profile headline so sourcers can find you.
Nigerian research employers (for experience)
Trial sites, university teaching hospitals, research institutes and international health NGOs in Nigeria hire data officers and data managers for studies. Most of these jobs are on-site in Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan and other research hubs. They matter because they give you the EDC, query and GCP experience that remote ads ask for.
What employers ask for (and how to cover each one)
Across the ads we opened, the same requirements kept coming up.
Education
A bachelor's degree is standard, and science or health subjects are preferred. Celerion accepts business, science or a related field. EDETEK prefers a scientific, medical or technological degree. Pharmacy, nursing, medical laboratory science, microbiology, biochemistry, statistics and public health graduates fit well.
Hands-on EDC experience
This is the main barrier. Ads name systems (Celerion lists Veeva EDC as preferred) and ask about them on the application form. EDC vendors mostly train users through employers and trial sites, not through public courses, so the realistic way to get this experience is a study role where you use the system every day.
GCP and regulatory knowledge
Celerion lists Good Clinical Data Management Practices, medical terminology, GCP, ICH guidelines and 21 CFR Part 11 as preferred knowledge. A GCP certificate is the cheapest way to show the basics.
SAS or other technical skills
Both Celerion and EDETEK mention SAS. You don't need to be a statistical programmer, but being able to pull listings and check data in SAS, SQL or R will set you apart from other junior applicants. Our data analyst guide covers free ways to learn SQL.
Communication and organisation
Every ad mentions attention to detail and clear writing. You'll be writing queries to site staff in other countries and explaining data problems to sponsors, mostly by email and in tickets.
Certificates worth getting (with October 2026 costs)
Certificates won't replace experience in CDM, but two or three of them help a CV get past the first screen.
A free GCP certificate
The NIDA Clinical Trials Network GCP course is online and self-paced, takes about 4 to 6 hours, and gives an ICH-GCP certificate when you complete it. A revised version aligned with ICH E6(R3) launched on 1 April 2026 (NIDA CTN Dissemination Library). The update post doesn't state a price, but the course has long been offered free. Confirm on the course site before you register.
CCDA: the entry-level SCDM certificate
The Certified Clinical Data Associate (CCDA) from SCDM is designed for people with an associate's degree or higher and 0 to 2 years of full-time CDM experience. The exam has 80 multiple-choice questions. Fees depend on the World Bank income tier of your country. As of October 2026, the lowest tier listed is $60 for members and $100 for non-members, rising to $125 and $175 for high-income countries (SCDM CCDA page). The page doesn't list a separate lower-middle-income tier, so check which tier the application portal gives Nigeria before you pay.
At the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), the $100 non-member fee comes to about ₦136,000. You'll also pay your bank's foreign card charges.
CCDM: once you have the experience
The Certified Clinical Data Manager (CCDM) requires either a bachelor's degree plus 2 or more years of full-time CDM experience, an associate's degree plus 3 or more years, or 4 or more years of experience without a degree. The exam lasts 3.5 hours, is supervised live through SCDM's partner Prolydian, and the certificate is valid for 3 years. As of October 2026, the lowest-tier fee is $125 for members and $200 for non-members, and the high-income fee is $250 or $325 (SCDM CCDM page). Alimentiv's manager ad lists CCDM as "an asset", not a requirement, which matches how most employers treat it.
| Certificate | Who it suits | Cost (lowest tier, Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| NIDA GCP | Everyone, first step | Free (confirm on site) |
| SCDM CCDA | 0 to 2 years' CDM experience | $60 member, $100 non-member |
| SCDM CCDM | 2+ years with a degree | $125 member, $200 non-member |
A realistic route in from Nigeria
Most people move into remote CDM in stages. Here is a sequence that works with the requirements above.
- Get the free GCP certificate and learn the vocabulary: CRFs, queries, edit checks, database lock, SAE reconciliation, MedDRA.
- Take any study data job you can get locally. Look for data entry clerk, data officer or research assistant roles on trials and cohort studies at teaching hospitals, research institutes and health NGOs. Prefer studies that use a proper EDC or REDCap over paper or spreadsheets.
- Keep a record of your work. Note the systems you used, the number of queries you handled, and any data management plan or CRF completion guideline you helped write. Don't include patient data or confidential study details.
- Sit the CCDA once you have some real exposure, so the exam backs up what's on your CV.
- Apply to CRO roles with Africa-based or wider eligibility, and to contract CDM work, while you keep building years of experience. At this stage, your realistic targets are associate and coordinator titles, not "Senior".
- Move up to CDM and senior CDM. At two to three years of experience with named EDC systems, you're in the range most remote ads ask for, and the CCDM becomes worth taking.
Example (hypothetical): Amaka is a pharmacist working as a data officer on a malaria vaccine study in Ibadan. She enters CRF data into REDCap and answers monitor queries. After a year, her CV reads "Resolved site queries across a multi-centre study; reconciled lab data against the study database; trained two new data staff on REDCap". She has a GCP certificate and the CCDA. That CV is a credible application for a Clinical Data Associate role, even though it isn't yet strong enough for a senior CDM role.
Sample CV bullet points (hypothetical)
- Reviewed eCRF data for 3 studies in Medidata Rave, raising and closing queries within agreed timelines.
- Wrote CRF completion guidelines used by 6 trial sites.
- Supported user acceptance testing of edit checks before go-live.
- Reconciled central lab and SAE data with the clinical database ahead of interim analysis.
Use your own true numbers only. CDM hiring managers know the work well and will ask detailed questions.
Pay: what we can and can't say
Published salary ranges for remote CDM roles are rare, and the ones that are published are tied to a country. The clearest example we found is Alimentiv's Manager, Clinical Data Management ad. It gives €76,500 to €127,500 a year for candidates located in Germany, with a 10% target bonus, and says other regions are handled case by case (Alimentiv job ad). That's a senior management role with 7 to 9 years' experience, in Germany. It isn't what a junior Nigeria-based applicant would be offered.
What affects pay for Nigeria-based CDM workers:
- Employment type: contractors are usually paid a day or hourly rate with no benefits. Employees hired through an employer of record get a salary and some benefits. See contractor vs employee when a foreign company hires you.
- Location-based pay bands: CROs set pay by country. If a role is opened to Nigeria, expect a Nigeria or Africa band, not a US or German one.
- Seniority and systems: named EDC experience and study-lead experience raise pay more than certificates do.
When you're paid in dollars, the guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the payment apps and their fees, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains what you owe under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
Working conditions to plan for
Time zones
Many sponsors are in the US or Europe. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is 6 hours behind Lagos (5 hours in summer). A 9am meeting in New York is 3pm in Lagos in winter. Central European time is the same as Lagos in winter. Close to database lock, deadlines are fixed, so expect some evenings.
Power, internet and data security
Trial data is sensitive patient data. Employers usually send a company laptop, require a VPN, and check where and how you work. Plan for an inverter or solar backup and two internet connections (for example, a fixed line plus a MiFi or phone hotspot), because a dropped connection during a sponsor call or a lock deadline looks bad. Never keep study data on a personal device or in personal cloud storage.
Scams aimed at clinical research job seekers
Fake "clinical data entry" jobs are common. Be wary of any of these:
- A fee for "EDC certification", "placement" or "training before you start". Real CROs train new hires at their own cost.
- Interviews held only by text on Telegram or WhatsApp.
- Pay that looks far too high for "no experience required" data work.
- Requests for your BVN, bank login or passport scan before you've had a real interview and a written offer.
Check the role on the company's own careers site before applying. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a remote clinical data management job with no experience?
Rarely. The remote ads we opened asked for at least one to two years of clinical trial or data management experience. Your best route is an on-site or hybrid study data role in Nigeria first, with a free GCP certificate. Then apply for Clinical Data Associate roles.
Do I need a pharmacy or medical degree to become a clinical data manager?
No. Employers usually ask for a bachelor's degree, and science, health or technology subjects are preferred. Celerion's ad also accepts business degrees or equivalent experience. Medical terminology knowledge helps, and you can learn it on the job.
Is the CCDM certification required for remote jobs?
No, it's usually listed as an advantage. Alimentiv's manager ad calls CCDM "an asset". You also need at least two years of full-time CDM experience with a degree before you can sit it, so it isn't a starting point.
How much does the CCDA cost for someone in Nigeria?
As of October 2026, SCDM's lowest tier is $60 for members and $100 for non-members. Fees depend on your country's World Bank income tier. Check which tier the portal gives Nigeria before you pay. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), $100 is about ₦136,000.
Which EDC system should I learn?
Learn whichever one your current or target employer uses. Medidata Rave and Veeva EDC appear often in ads. Access mostly comes through employers and trial sites, so a job using any proper EDC (including REDCap on academic studies) counts as useful experience. Once you know one system well, the others are easier to pick up.
What does "home-based in South Africa" mean on a CDM job ad?
It means the job is remote, but you must live in South Africa and be able to work there legally. A Nigeria-based applicant isn't eligible for that role, even though you could do the work from Lagos.
Is clinical data management the same as clinical research coordination?
No. A coordinator works at a trial site managing patients, visits and paperwork, and the role is usually on-site. A data manager cleans and manages the study data, often for a CRO or sponsor, and can work remotely. Our planned guide to remote clinical research coordinator jobs covers the coordinator role.
Key takeaways
- Remote clinical data management jobs are mostly posted by CROs, pharma companies and clinical software firms, under several titles from Clinical Data Associate to Data Management Lead.
- Most remote CDM ads are limited to named countries. Check the location line, the application form and the salary currency before applying.
- Employers usually want a science degree, GCP knowledge and one to two or more years of hands-on EDC experience.
- A free GCP certificate and the SCDM CCDA (from $60, October 2026) are affordable first credentials. The CCDM comes later.
- Building experience on Nigerian studies first is the most realistic route into remote CDM work.
