Remote video editor jobs that pay in dollars do exist for people in Nigeria. Most come from three places: talent agencies that place African editors with US companies, performance-marketing and YouTube agencies that hire "anywhere in the world", and freelance clients you find yourself. Ads open to Nigeria that we checked in October 2026 paid roughly $1,000 to $1,800 a month for full-time contract editing. That's well below US local pay, but it's several times what most naira editing gigs pay.
The hard part is not the editing. It's finding ads that actually accept Nigeria and keeping up with US working hours while NEPA comes and goes. This guide shows where these jobs are advertised, what real ads pay, how to read the location line before you waste an application, which tools employers name, and how to get paid. For the full skills path, see our video editor career guide.
Quick answer
Nigerians can get dollar-paying remote video editing work, mostly as contractors rather than employees. The usual sources are agencies that hire across Africa and Latin America for US clients, "anywhere in the world" roles at ad and YouTube agencies, and direct freelance clients. Africa-open ads checked in October 2026 listed $1,000 to $1,800 a month. Expect US business hours, a portfolio test, and tools such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and After Effects.
Where the dollar-paying video editing work actually is
Dollar-paying video editing work for Nigerians clusters in a few kinds of employer. Each type pays, hires and tests you differently. Knowing which one you're applying to helps you set your rate and your portfolio.
| Source of work | Usual arrangement | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Talent agencies placing editors with US firms | Monthly contract, fixed hours | Steady pay, US hours, a skills test |
| Performance ad and DTC agencies | Contract or freelance | Short-form ads, fast turnaround, volume |
| YouTube creators and personal brands | Per video or monthly retainer | Long-form plus Shorts, repeat work |
| Startups and in-house marketing teams | Contract, sometimes employee via EOR | Fewer roles, often region-restricted |
| Freelance marketplaces and direct outreach | Per project | You find and keep clients yourself |
Talent agencies that hire across Africa
The most dependable dollar jobs we found came from staffing companies that recruit outside the US and place people with US clients. For example, Scale Army Careers had a Video Editor contract listed on Remotive (checked 27 October 2026). The ad was open to Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe and paid $1,500 to $1,800 a month, working 8:00am to 4:30pm US Eastern time for a creative video agency client (Remotive listing).
On the same day, Scale Army's company page on Remote Rocketship showed a junior "Performance Video Editor, Designer" contract that named Nigeria among the eligible countries. It paid $1,000 to $1,300 a month and asked for no degree. Ads like these close quickly, so open the live posting before you rely on any figure here.
Performance marketing and direct-response agencies
Direct-response (DR) editing means cutting video ads built to make people click and buy, such as UGC (user-generated content) ads, VSLs (video sales letters) and TikTok or Meta ad variations. This work comes in volume and is judged on results, so agencies often hire globally. The Remote Rocketship Africa video editor page (checked 27 October 2026) listed several "Anywhere in the World" roles of this type from agencies such as Linear Agency and CHASR. Two of the CHASR roles required French.
For more on this format, see our planned guide to short-form video editing jobs.
YouTube creators and personal brands
YouTube channels hire editors for long-form videos, then ask the same editor to cut Shorts from each upload. Pay is usually per video or a monthly retainer, and creators tend to keep an editor who hits deadlines. Our planned guide to YouTube video editing jobs for beginners covers how to win the first channel.
Startups and in-house teams
In-house video editor jobs at funded startups pay the most. They're also the most likely to be limited to US residents. In the same October 2026 search results, roles at Superpower and Snowball on Ashby were restricted to US applicants. Apply to in-house roles only when the location line clearly includes Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide.
What remote video editors are paid in dollars (as of October 2026)
What Nigeria-based remote video editors earn depends on the type of employer, not just on skill. US salary data tells you what the job is worth in the US. Africa-open ads tell you what you're likely to be offered.
| Source | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Scale Army junior ad (Nigeria listed) | $1,000 to $1,300 a month | Contract range from a live ad |
| Scale Army editor ad (Africa) | $1,500 to $1,800 a month | Contract range from a live ad |
| Plane, remote video editor in Nigeria | $12,951 a year median | Modelled base salary, method not published |
| BLS, US film and video editors | $75,420 a year median | US local pay, May 2025 |
Sources: the ads above (checked 27 October 2026), Plane's Nigeria video editor salary page and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook.
In naira at the CBN NFEM rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (23 October 2026):
- $1,000 a month is about ₦1,362,000
- $1,300 a month is about ₦1,771,000
- $1,500 a month is about ₦2,043,000
- $1,800 a month is about ₦2,452,000
Plane's $12,951 median works out to about $1,080 a month, or roughly ₦1,470,000. That sits right inside the range of the live ads.
Why US pay figures don't apply to you
The BLS reports a May 2025 US median of $75,420 a year for film and video editors. The lowest 10% earned under $40,280 and the top 10% over $148,550. These figures describe people living and working in the US. A company hiring a contractor in Lagos or Enugu almost always pays less, because it's paying for the work, not for US rent. Treat BLS as the ceiling a very senior editor might approach on direct clients, not as your target for a first contract.
The BLS also says 35% of US film and video editors are self-employed. Freelance and contract work is normal in this field, even in the US.
The figures for other markets in the same Africa listings page vary widely. One South Africa-only DR role was listed in pounds (£1,200 to £1,600 a month), and a German-speaking short-form role open worldwide was listed at €3,000 to €3,600 a month. Language skills and niche formats move pay more than years of experience do. For role pay in more detail, see the video editor salary guide.
What pushes a rate higher
- Format: DR ads and YouTube editing, where results are measured, pay more than simple trimming and captions.
- Motion graphics: ads that ask for After Effects or DaVinci Resolve Fusion tend to sit at the top of a range.
- Languages: French, German or Arabic opened roles in the listings we saw that English-only editors can't apply for.
- Overlap hours: roles that require full US business hours often pay more than async per-video gigs.
- Proof: a reel that shows retention or ad results makes it easier to justify a higher rate.
Which ads Nigerians can actually apply for
A remote video editor ad is open to you only if its location line includes where you live. "Remote" on its own tells you nothing. Read the location line, the hours and the language line before anything else.
Here's how the common location lines read for someone in Nigeria:
| Location line says | Can you apply from Nigeria? |
|---|---|
| Nigeria named in a country list | Yes |
| Africa, or LATAM, Africa and Eastern Europe | Usually yes, confirm in the ad |
| Anywhere in the World or Worldwide | Usually yes, check for a language need |
| EMEA | Often yes, check for listed countries |
| A country list that leaves out Nigeria | No |
| US only, or US residents | No |
The October 2026 listings show why the country list matters. Soar With Us advertised a digital video editor role at $1,700 to $2,000 a month, but only for South Africa, the Philippines, Spain, Pakistan, the Netherlands and Germany. Scale Army's roles listed Nigeria next to Egypt, Ethiopia, Argentina and South Africa. Both were "remote".
A full-time editor listing on remote4africa followed the same pattern. It named Nigeria, required Adobe Premiere Pro and three years' experience, and asked for availability during US business hours with working hours given as WAT to Egypt time (remote4africa listing, applications closed when checked). For more on reading these lines, see our planned guides on what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria and what EMEA means in a job ad.
A quick eligibility check before you apply
- Find Nigeria, Africa or worldwide in the location line. If the country list leaves Nigeria out, skip it.
- Check the hours. "US business hours" means afternoon and evening in Lagos.
- Check the language line. French or German may be required.
- Check whether it's a contract or employment, and who pays you (the client, an agency, or a platform like Deel).
- Confirm the company has a real website and that the ad also appears on its own careers page or applicant tracking system.
Skills and tools employers ask for
Employers hiring remote video editors name specific software and specific formats in their ads. Match your portfolio to those words. The ads we opened in October 2026 asked for:
- Editing software: Adobe Premiere Pro (remote4africa listing), DaVinci Resolve Studio (Scale Army), and CapCut in some short-form roles.
- Motion graphics: Adobe After Effects and DaVinci Resolve Fusion.
- Collaboration: Blackmagic Cloud for shared projects, plus ClickUp, Asana or Teamwork to track tasks, and Zoom for calls.
- AI tools: several ads mention AI video tools, and some agencies now advertise "AI video editor" roles.
Cheap ways to get the software
DaVinci Resolve has a free version that handles most 8-bit formats up to Ultra HD at 60fps. The paid Studio version adds the AI Neural Engine, noise reduction, text-based editing and output above 4K. Blackmagic Design listed Studio at $236 as of October 2026 (DaVinci Resolve product page), about ₦321,000 at ₦1,362 to $1, and it's a one-off purchase. Premiere Pro and After Effects are Adobe subscriptions, so check Adobe's current price in your local billing before you commit.
A sensible order for a beginner on a budget: learn on free DaVinci Resolve, buy Studio once an ad or client needs it, and add an Adobe subscription when a client works in Premiere. Our planned guide to software for remote video editors compares the options.
Skills that matter more than the software
- Pacing and story: cutting a 20-minute talk into a tight 8-minute video people watch to the end.
- Hooks for short-form: the first two seconds of an ad or Short.
- Sound: clean dialogue, music levels and simple noise removal.
- Captions and on-screen text in the client's brand style.
- Following written feedback across time zones without needing a call.
The full learning path, with courses, is on the video editor career page.
How to build a portfolio that wins dollar clients
Dollar clients hire video editors from a reel, not a CV. Your portfolio should look like the work in the ad you're answering.
- Keep a 60 to 90-second showreel at the top, with your best cuts first.
- Split samples by format: DR ads, YouTube long-form, Shorts and Reels, podcast clips.
- Show before and after: the raw footage next to your cut.
- Add one line per sample on the brief, the tools you used and the turnaround time.
- If you have results (watch time, ad performance shared by a client), state them only if they're real and you're allowed to share them.
If you have no paid clients yet, re-edit public-domain or Creative Commons footage, or offer a properly scoped and agreed edit to a small local business. Don't present spec work as paid client work.
Expect a paid or unpaid test edit for most agency roles. A short test is normal. A "test" that is a full, publishable video for a live client, with no pay, is free labour, and you can decline it.
Working from Nigeria: hours, power and upload speed
Remote video editing from Nigeria has problems that writing or support jobs don't, mostly because video files are huge.
Working US hours from Lagos
Most Africa-open video editor contracts we saw required US business hours. The Scale Army ad's 8:00am to 4:30pm Eastern shift works out like this:
| US Eastern shift | Lagos time | When |
|---|---|---|
| 8:00am to 4:30pm EDT | 1:00pm to 9:30pm | US summer time |
| 8:00am to 4:30pm EST | 2:00pm to 10:30pm | From 1 November 2026 |
Nigeria stays on WAT (UTC+1) all year, so your shift moves by an hour when US clocks change. UK clients are easier: London is on GMT now, one hour behind Lagos, and on the same time in summer. Plan your power and internet around the late afternoon and evening, when grid supply is often worst.
Power and internet backup
- Run your editing machine on an inverter or solar setup, with a generator as backup. A desktop that dies mid-render can corrupt a project.
- Use two internet sources, for example a fibre or 4G/5G router plus a MiFi or a phone hotspot on a different network.
- Starlink is available in Nigeria and gives steadier upload for big files. Check the current price before buying.
Moving large files
Upload speed is the hidden limit. A client may send 50GB of raw footage and expect a finished export back the same day. Ways to cope:
- Ask for proxies (smaller working files) or work in the client's cloud project, such as Blackmagic Cloud, where only changes sync.
- Download raw footage overnight and upload finished exports in the morning, when the network is quieter.
- Tell the client your upload speed before you agree delivery times.
Our planned guide to internet options for remote work in Nigeria compares providers.
Contracts and getting paid in dollars
Nearly all the Nigeria-open video editor ads we found were contracts, not employment. That means no pension, no paid leave, and your own responsibility for tax. Before you sign, ask:
- Is the rate monthly, hourly or per video, and what happens to pay when a client sends no footage?
- How many revisions are included?
- Who owns the project files and footage?
- How and when you'll be paid (agency payroll through Deel or Remote, direct bank transfer, or a platform).
Read contractor versus employee in Nigeria for what each arrangement means for you. For the payment apps (Grey, Raenest, Payoneer, Wise, Deel withdrawals) and their fees, see how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Dollar income is taxable, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains your obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
Freelance marketplaces such as Upwork and Fiverr take a service fee from each payment, and Upwork charges Connects to send proposals. Fees change, so check each platform's own help pages for the current rates before you set your prices.
Example (hypothetical): per-video freelancing vs a monthly contract
Example (hypothetical): an editor in Ibadan cuts two YouTube videos a week for one US creator at $60 each, plus Shorts, and grosses about $480 a month before platform or transfer fees (about ₦654,000 at ₦1,362 to $1). The same editor on a $1,300 monthly contract earns more and has steady income, but gives up afternoons and evenings to US hours. Many editors start with per-video clients to build a reel, then move to a contract. Our planned guide to pricing creative services for international clients covers rate-setting.
Scams that target video editors
Video editors attract a few particular scams. Watch for:
- Being asked to pay for "required software", a "training kit" or a "licence" before you start.
- "Test edits" that are actually full client projects, followed by silence.
- Overpayment by cheque or transfer with a request to refund the difference.
- Recruiters who only talk on Telegram or WhatsApp and can't point to a company website or a careers page.
- Pay far above the ranges above for beginner work with no test.
Legitimate employers never charge you to apply. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria explains how to check a recruiter.
A step-by-step plan to land your first dollar editing job
- Pick one format to lead with: DR ads, YouTube long-form or short-form.
- Build a reel and three to five samples in that format using free DaVinci Resolve.
- Set up backup power, a second internet connection and a cloud storage account.
- Open a way to receive dollars, and complete your NIN and BVN checks with the provider.
- Search Africa-open and worldwide listings daily and filter out ads that don't list Nigeria.
- Tailor each application: mention the ad's software and format, and link the matching sample.
- Prepare for the test edit and a video interview. Our video editor interview questions help.
- While you wait, take one or two per-video freelance clients to keep your reel fresh.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians get remote video editor jobs that pay in dollars?
Yes. Some ads checked in October 2026 named Nigeria or "Africa" as eligible and paid in US dollars, mostly through agencies hiring for US clients. Many other remote video editor ads are limited to certain countries, so check the location line on each one.
How much do remote video editors in Nigeria earn in dollars?
Africa-open contract ads we checked paid $1,000 to $1,800 a month as of October 2026, roughly ₦1.36 million to ₦2.45 million at ₦1,362 to $1. Plane models a median of $12,951 a year for remote video editors in Nigeria. Freelance per-video income varies far more.
Do I need a degree to get a remote video editing job?
Usually not. The US BLS says a bachelor's degree is typical for editors in the US, but the Nigeria-open junior ad we saw said no degree was required. Remote employers judge you on your reel and test edit.
Should I learn Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve?
Learn one well, then the other. DaVinci Resolve is free to start and showed up in agency ads, while Premiere Pro is still common, especially with YouTube and in-house teams. After Effects or Fusion adds motion graphics, which raises your rate.
What hours will I work for a US company?
Usually afternoon to late evening in Nigeria. A US Eastern 8:00am to 4:30pm shift runs from 2:00pm to 10:30pm in Lagos from 1 November 2026, and from 1:00pm to 9:30pm during US summer time.
Where can I find remote video editor jobs open to Nigeria?
Look at remote job boards and aggregators that show location eligibility, agency careers pages, and freelance marketplaces. Filter by Africa or worldwide, and open the original ad. WorkRemote's jobs board lists remote roles open to applicants living in Nigeria, with where applicants may live shown on each listing.
Is it safe to do an unpaid test edit?
A short test of a few minutes of footage is normal and usually fine. Be careful if the "test" is a full, publishable video for a live client. Ask for a paid test or a shorter sample instead.
Key takeaways
- Dollar-paying video editing work for Nigerians comes mainly from agencies hiring across Africa, worldwide ad and YouTube agencies, and freelance clients.
- Nigeria-open contract ads checked in October 2026 paid $1,000 to $1,800 a month, far below the US median of $75,420 a year.
- "Remote" means nothing on its own: confirm Nigeria, Africa or worldwide in the location line, and check for a language requirement.
- Most roles expect US business hours, so plan backup power and internet for afternoons and evenings in Lagos.
- Upload speed is your hidden limit: use proxies, cloud projects and off-peak transfers.
- Most of these jobs are contracts, so sort out dollar payments and tax before your first invoice.
