Medium shot people discussing

Most remote strategy analyst jobs ask for a bachelor's degree, two to five years in consulting, finance, banking or business analysis, and strong Excel modelling and slide-writing skills. Nigerians can qualify. The harder part is finding remote strategy roles that are actually open to someone living in Nigeria, because many are limited to particular countries.

Strategy work is senior-facing. You help leaders decide where to grow, what to cut and which deals to pursue. For that reason, employers rarely hire complete beginners into remote strategy roles. They want proof that you can turn messy data into a clear recommendation.

This guide covers the job titles strategy work is advertised under, the education and experience employers ask for, the skills and tools they test, what pay looks like and how to read it from Nigeria, and how to build evidence if you've never worked at a consulting firm. Facts that can change are dated as of October 2026.

Quick answer

A remote strategy analyst usually needs a bachelor's degree in business, economics, finance, engineering or a related field, plus two to five years of analytical work in consulting, banking, corporate finance or operations. An MBA helps but is rarely required. Employers test Excel financial modelling, PowerPoint storytelling, market sizing and clear writing. From Nigeria, look for ads that are open worldwide, open to EMEA, or set a time-zone range that includes WAT (UTC+1).

What a remote strategy analyst actually does

A strategy analyst researches business questions and recommends decisions to senior leaders. Typical questions include whether to enter a new market, why margins are falling in one region, or whether an acquisition target is worth buying. The output is usually a model, a memo and a slide deck.

The US government groups this work with management analysts. The Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational profile for management analysts describes the job as gathering information, analysing financial and other data, developing solutions, presenting recommendations to management and checking that changes are working. That's a fair description of an in-house strategy analyst too.

Strategy roles work well remotely because most of the job is research, analysis and writing. The hard part is that the people you report to are often executives in London, Amsterdam or New York, so the job comes with meetings in their working hours.

Job titles that mean strategy work

Searching only "strategy analyst" misses a lot of openings. Companies use different titles for similar work.

Job titleTypical focusUsual seniority
Strategy AnalystMarket research, planning, board decksJunior to mid
Strategy & Operations (BizOps) AnalystKPIs, planning, process fixesJunior to mid
Corporate Strategy AnalystLong-range plans, portfolio choicesMid
Sales or GTM Strategy & Operations AnalystTerritory, quota and pipeline analysisMid to senior
Corporate Development or M&A AnalystSourcing and modelling acquisitionsMid
Strategic Planning AnalystAnnual plans, budgets, OKRsJunior to mid

Revenue operations roles overlap with the sales strategy end of this list. Our planned guide to finding remote revenue operations jobs covers those separately. If you prefer deal work, the M&A path is closer to remote investment analyst roles.

Education: do you need a degree or an MBA?

A degree is the norm. The BLS profile says a bachelor's degree is the typical entry-level education for management analysts and that some employers prefer candidates with an MBA. The usual undergraduate fields are business, social science and engineering.

The US Department of Labor's O*NET profile for management analysts gives a more detailed picture. Of the respondents asked what education a new hire needs, 57% said a bachelor's degree, 24% said a master's degree and 10% said some college but no degree. In short, most employers want a degree, a meaningful minority want a master's, and a small number will consider strong candidates without one.

For Nigerian applicants, a first degree from a Nigerian university is generally fine. Foreign employers care more about what you can model and explain than where you studied. An HND is harder to sell for strategy roles than for operations or support roles, but strong evidence can make up for it. An MBA is worth considering only if you are aiming for corporate strategy at a large company, and even then experience counts for more.

Experience: how many years, and which kinds

Strategy roles are rarely entry-level. The BLS profile lists related work experience as typical, and notes that some firms prefer people who have worked as accountants, auditors or computer systems analysts.

Live ads match this. As of October 2026, an Atlassian ad for a Principal Analyst, Sales Strategy & Operations (EMEA) asks for 7+ years in sales operations or revenue operations. A BlueThrone ad for an M&A Analyst asks for 2 to 4 years in investment banking, corporate finance or a buy-side role with deal experience.

Backgrounds that transfer well into remote strategy work:

  • Consulting firms in Lagos or Abuja (Big Four advisory, boutique strategy and transformation firms)
  • Strategy, planning or investor-relations units in Nigerian banks and telecoms companies
  • Business operations or strategy roles at fintechs and startups
  • Investment banking, private equity or corporate finance
  • Business analysis and data analysis, if you can show commercial judgement as well as reporting

If you are newer to the field, an operations analyst role is often a more realistic first remote step. Our planned guide to remote operations analyst jobs for beginners explains that route.

Skills and tools employers test

Strategy hiring processes usually include a case exercise, so the skills below get tested, not just listed.

Financial modelling in Excel or Google Sheets

You need to build a model from a blank sheet: revenue drivers, costs, scenarios and sensitivity tables. The BlueThrone ad, for example, asks for financial models built from scratch, including DCF (discounted cash flow) and LBO (leveraged buyout) models, and an understanding of how the three financial statements link. Not every strategy role is that finance-heavy. Every one of them expects clean, auditable spreadsheets.

Slides and written recommendations

Executives read the first slide and the summary. Learn to write "answer first": state the recommendation, then the three reasons, then the evidence. In remote teams, a one-page written memo often replaces a meeting, so your writing gets judged every week.

Data and BI tools

O*NET lists the software used in this occupation. It includes Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, Tableau, Alteryx, SQL databases, Salesforce and Microsoft Visio, alongside collaboration tools such as Confluence and Microsoft Teams. The Atlassian ad names Salesforce, Tableau and Google Sheets. Strategy and operations roles increasingly expect you to pull your own data with SQL rather than wait for an analyst. If you need to build those data skills, our data analyst career guide lists courses and a learning path.

Business frameworks and market sizing

You should be comfortable with market sizing (top-down and bottom-up), unit economics (CAC, LTV, retention, ARPU), competitor analysis and simple pricing analysis. Frameworks help you structure a problem. Interviewers mark you down for reciting them without numbers.

Remote-specific skills

Remote strategy analysts need to write clear async updates, run tidy stakeholder interviews over video and manage their own deadlines. BLS lists analytical, communication, interpersonal, problem-solving and time-management skills as important qualities. In a remote role, all five show up in your written work.

Certifications: helpful, not required

No certification is required to become a strategy analyst. The BLS profile says certification is not required, though a credential may give some jobseekers an advantage.

The best-known consulting credential is the Certified Management Consultant (CMC). According to ICMCI, the international council for management consulting institutes, the CMC can only be awarded by national professional bodies, usually institutes of management consultants, that are full members of ICMCI. Nigeria has one: ICMCI lists the Institute of Management Consultants - Nigeria, founded in August 1983, as a full member since 1987.

The CMC is aimed at practising consultants with experience, not people trying to break into the field, so it won't get you a first strategy job. Check the current fees and eligibility directly with the Nigerian institute before paying anything. For an aspiring analyst, a strong modelling sample and a well-argued case memo will do more than any certificate.

Can you get a remote strategy analyst job from Nigeria?

Yes, but only for roles whose eligibility includes where you live. Many remote strategy ads are restricted to specific countries, so check every ad before applying.

Three kinds of remote strategy ads

  • Country-restricted remote. The Atlassian principal analyst ad lists remote options in the UK and the Netherlands and says the company can hire in countries where it has a legal entity (checked October 2026). It's remote, but not for someone living in Lagos.
  • Time-zone-restricted remote. The BlueThrone M&A Analyst ad is fully remote and asks for a time zone between UTC+1 and UTC+8 (checked October 2026). Nigeria's WAT is UTC+1, so Lagos sits at the edge of that window. Confirm with the recruiter that Nigeria-based applicants are accepted before you invest hours in the application.
  • Worldwide or EMEA remote. These are the easiest to apply for, but read the small print, because "EMEA" sometimes means a list of countries. Our planned explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job ad breaks this down.

We also found strategy analyst roles in Lagos and Abuja and agency strategy roles elsewhere in Africa that turned out to be on-site. A role can be advertised in your region and still need you in the office.

Contractor or employee?

Many foreign companies hiring strategy analysts in Nigeria take them on as contractors. BlueThrone's ad, for example, lists the role as full-time B2B, meaning you invoice as an independent business. Others use an employer of record (EOR) to employ you formally. The difference affects leave, benefits, tax and notice periods, and our guide to contractor versus EOR employment explains what to check in each.

Time zones and meetings

Strategy analysts sit in leadership meetings more than most analysts, so overlap matters.

Employer baseTime difference from Lagos (as of late October 2026)What a 9am meeting means in Lagos
London (GMT)Lagos is 1 hour ahead10am
Amsterdam, Berlin (CET)Same time9am
New York (EST from 1 November)Lagos is 6 hours ahead3pm
DubaiLagos is 3 hours behind6am
SingaporeLagos is 7 hours behind2am

European and UK roles fit Nigerian working hours best. US East Coast roles mean afternoons into evenings. Asia-based roles usually mean early starts, so check which hours they expect overlap.

How much do remote strategy analysts earn?

There's no reliable published figure for what Nigeria-based remote strategy analysts earn, so treat the numbers below as benchmarks, not offers.

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $101,860 for management analysts in the US in May 2025 (about $48.97 an hour). At WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's roughly ₦138.7 million a year. This is US pay for people living in the US, many with years of experience. A company hiring you from Nigeria will usually offer less, often as a contractor without US benefits.

What tends to move the offer:

  • Whether the company publishes one global salary band or adjusts pay by location
  • Your years of experience and whether you've done strategy work for a recognised firm
  • Contractor versus employee status (contractors may get a higher headline rate but no leave or pension)
  • How finance-heavy the role is (M&A and corporate development usually pay more than planning roles)

Many ads, including BlueThrone's, don't publish pay. Ask for the range early, in the currency you'll be paid in. For the closest related pay data on our site, see the business analyst salary guide. Once paid, compare withdrawal options in our guide to receiving dollars in Nigeria, and read up on how remote income is taxed in Nigeria.

How to build evidence if you haven't worked in strategy

Employers hire strategy analysts on proof of judgement. If your CV doesn't show strategy experience yet, build two or three samples that do.

What a strategy work sample looks like

Example (hypothetical): Chidinma is a credit analyst at a Lagos bank who wants a strategy and operations role at a European fintech. She picks a real public question, such as whether a mid-sized payments company should launch in Ghana. She builds a bottom-up market-sizing model in Google Sheets from public data, writes a two-page recommendation memo, and makes a six-slide deck with the answer on slide one. She shares view-only links in her applications and on LinkedIn.

Good sample topics:

  • A market-entry recommendation for a real company, using public data
  • A unit-economics teardown of a listed company from its annual report
  • A pricing analysis comparing three competitors
  • A KPI dashboard in Power BI or Tableau with a written "so what" summary

Label every sample as independent work based on public information. Never imply a company commissioned it. If you're also targeting business analyst roles, our planned guide to building a business analyst portfolio goes into more detail on formats.

Turn your current job into strategy experience

Look for strategy-flavoured work where you already are: build the budget model, write the quarterly performance review, run the competitor analysis for a product launch. Put the decision and the result on your CV ("modelled three pricing scenarios; leadership adopted option B"), not just the task.

Steps to apply for remote strategy analyst jobs

  1. Pick your lane: strategy and operations, corporate strategy, sales strategy, or M&A. Each needs different samples.
  2. Rewrite your CV around decisions you influenced, with numbers. One page for analyst roles, two at most.
  3. Build two work samples that match your lane, as described above.
  4. Search all the job titles in the table earlier, not just "strategy analyst".
  5. Check eligibility on every ad: country list, time-zone range, contractor or employee.
  6. Prepare for case interviews: market sizing out loud, a short modelling test and a presentation of your recommendation.
  7. Set up for reliable video calls before the first interview: power backup and a second internet connection.
  8. Ask about pay range, currency, payment method and working hours before accepting.

Nigeria-specific setup for strategy roles

Strategy analysts present to executives, so a dropped call during a board-prep meeting costs more than in most roles.

  • Power: keep an inverter or solar backup that can run your laptop and router through a full afternoon of US-hours meetings, with a generator as a last resort.
  • Internet: use two providers, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network, and switch before an important call, not during it.
  • Documents: keep your NIN, international passport and BVN-linked bank details ready for contractor onboarding or EOR paperwork, but only share them once you've verified the employer.
  • Data security: strategy work involves confidential plans and deal data. Use the company's devices or accounts if they're provided, and keep work files off shared family laptops.

Common mistakes and risks

  • Applying to country-restricted roles. If an ad lists remote UK or Netherlands only, a Nigeria-based application will usually be filtered out.
  • Reciting frameworks without numbers. Interviewers want an estimate and a recommendation, not a list of SWOT boxes.
  • Long CVs about tasks. Strategy recruiters look for impact on decisions. Cut task lists.
  • Ignoring the time-zone requirement. Agreeing to US hours and then struggling with evening meetings damages trust quickly.
  • Paying for "strategy job placement". Legitimate employers don't charge applicants. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria lists the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an MBA to become a remote strategy analyst?

No, most analyst-level roles don't require one. The BLS says a bachelor's degree is typical and that some employers prefer an MBA. An MBA helps most for corporate strategy at large companies and for senior roles, but relevant experience and strong work samples usually count for more.

Can a fresh graduate get a remote strategy analyst job?

It's rare. Most remote strategy ads ask for at least two years of analytical experience. Graduates usually do better starting in consulting, banking, operations or data analysis, locally or remotely, and moving into strategy after two or three years.

What is the difference between a strategy analyst and a business analyst?

A strategy analyst helps leaders decide what the company should do, such as which markets to enter or which deals to pursue. A business analyst usually works out how to deliver a change, gathering requirements and improving processes and systems. The skills overlap, and our business analyst career guide covers that role in detail.

Which certification is best for strategy analysts?

None is required. The Certified Management Consultant (CMC) is the recognised consulting credential, awarded in Nigeria through the Institute of Management Consultants - Nigeria, an ICMCI full member, but it targets experienced consultants. Early in your career, modelling skills and work samples are worth more.

Are remote strategy analyst jobs open to Nigerians?

Some are. Many are limited to specific countries, while others accept worldwide applicants or any time zone within a range that includes WAT (UTC+1). Check the location and time-zone lines on each ad, and ask the recruiter if they aren't clear.

How much does a remote strategy analyst earn from Nigeria?

There's no reliable public figure for Nigeria-based remote strategy analysts. The US median for management analysts was $101,860 a year in May 2025 (BLS), but that's a benchmark for US residents. Offers to people in Nigeria are usually lower, so ask for the range before you invest heavily in a hiring process.

What tools should a strategy analyst learn first?

Excel or Google Sheets for modelling, and PowerPoint or Google Slides for presenting. After that, add SQL and one BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau, which appear in O*NET's list of tools for this occupation and in live strategy and operations ads.

Key takeaways

  • Remote strategy analyst jobs usually need a bachelor's degree, two to five years of analytical experience, and tested skills in modelling and executive communication.
  • Strategy work is advertised under many titles, including strategy and operations, BizOps, corporate development and sales strategy, so search all of them.
  • Many remote strategy ads are country-restricted. Target worldwide, EMEA or time-zone-based ads that include WAT.
  • US pay figures such as the BLS median of $101,860 are benchmarks. Nigeria-based offers are usually lower and are often contractor arrangements.
  • Two or three strong work samples (a model, a memo and a short deck) can stand in for missing consulting-firm experience.
