Remote statistics jobs exist for Nigerians, but they are concentrated in a few places: clinical research companies, development research and survey work, product experimentation teams at tech companies, and freelance statistical consulting. Most of the remote "statistician" ads you find on big job boards are tied to the US or UK, so the real skill is knowing which job families hire across Africa and how to read the location line on an ad.

This guide is for people who already have statistics training, whether from a degree in statistics, mathematics, economics or epidemiology, or from years as an analyst or M&E officer. You'll learn which job titles to search, what employers test you on (R, SAS, CDISC standards, experimental design), what US pay benchmarks say and why your offer will usually be lower, and how to build evidence that gets a recruiter to reply.

Quick answer

Remote statistics jobs open to Nigeria-based applicants are mostly biostatistics and statistical programming roles at clinical research organisations, survey and evaluation statistics in development research, experimentation analysis at tech companies, and freelance consulting. Expect employers to ask for R or SAS, solid inference and study-design skills and often a master's degree. Many ads list specific countries, so confirm on the live ad that Nigeria is eligible before you apply.

What counts as a remote statistics job

A statistics job is one where the main thing you hand over is a statistical judgement: a sample size, a model, an estimate with honest uncertainty, or a decision about whether an effect is real. A data analyst mostly describes what happened using dashboards and SQL. A statistician designs the study or experiment and defends the inference. The two overlap a lot, and many Nigerian statistics graduates start out with "data analyst" titles. If that's where you are now, our remote data analyst career guide covers that route.

These are the job families to search for:

Job titleWhat the work isUsual tools
BiostatisticianDesigns clinical trials, writes statistical analysis plans, analyses trial dataSAS, R
Statistical programmerBuilds analysis datasets and tables, listings and figures for trialsSAS, R, CDISC
Survey or sampling statisticianDesigns samples, builds weights, estimates from household surveysR, Stata
Research or evaluation statisticianImpact evaluations, regression, causal inferenceStata, R
Experimentation analystDesigns and reads A/B tests for product teamsPython, R, SQL
Statistical consultant (freelance)Analysis for researchers, NGOs or businesses on a project basisR, SPSS, Stata

Two related paths have their own guides. Quantitative finance roles are covered in how to get a remote quantitative analyst job. Clinical data management, which handles collecting and cleaning trial data rather than analysing it, is covered in remote clinical data management jobs.

Where Nigerian statisticians actually get hired remotely

Clinical research organisations

Clinical research organisations (CROs) run drug and device trials for pharmaceutical companies. They employ a lot of biostatisticians and statistical programmers, and many of those roles are home-based. This is the best-paid statistics track that you can reach remotely, and it is also the most demanding about standards and experience.

Location is the catch. As of October 2026, ICON plc's biostatistics job listings show several remote roles, including Senior Biostatistician and Statistical Programmer positions. The only African location listed on them is Johannesburg, South Africa. Its South Africa jobs page lists remote statistical programming and clinical data roles with Johannesburg among the locations. We found no ICON statistics listing that named Nigeria.

When a role lists a specific city, the employer usually needs to employ you through its company in that country. That normally means you need the right to work there. A Johannesburg location therefore doesn't mean "anywhere in Africa". If a CRO role lists only South Africa, Kenya or a European country, assume it isn't open to someone living in Lagos unless the ad or the recruiter says so. Read the live ad, and ask the recruiter directly if it's unclear.

This still matters for you. CROs sometimes hire through employer-of-record arrangements or contractor models in countries where they have no office. The skills are also identical across employers, so the CV you build for one CRO works for the next. Our explainer on contractor versus EOR employment covers how those arrangements work when the employer has no Nigerian entity.

Development research, monitoring and evaluation

Survey and evaluation statistics is the track where Nigeria-based candidates have a natural advantage. NGOs, research firms, donor-funded projects and global health organisations run household surveys and impact evaluations in Nigeria, and they want statisticians who understand the context. Some of these roles are fully remote. Others are "remote with fieldwork" or remote but only for the length of a funded project.

What you'll be asked to do:

  • Calculate sample sizes and design multi-stage cluster samples
  • Build survey weights and estimate standard errors that account for the survey design
  • Run regressions, difference-in-differences or other evaluation designs
  • Write up results for non-statisticians, often donors and programme staff

Many of these jobs are short-term consultancies tied to a grant, so the contract's length and payment terms matter as much as the rate. For the broader M&E career path, see remote monitoring and evaluation jobs. For public health research roles, see remote public health research jobs.

Tech companies: experimentation and product analytics

Product companies run A/B tests on pricing pages, onboarding flows and app features. Someone has to design those tests, pick the metrics, check sample sizes and say whether the result is real or noise. The job titles vary: data scientist (product), experimentation analyst, decision scientist and sometimes product analyst.

These roles hire globally more often than clinical roles do, especially at startups with distributed teams. The bar is high, though, and employers check SQL and Python as closely as statistics. Expect interview questions on statistical power, peeking at results early, multiple comparisons and novelty effects. Our remote data scientist career guide covers the wider data science path.

Freelance statistical consulting

Freelance work is the most open to Nigeria-based workers, because clients hire individuals and no employment entity is needed. Typical buyers are researchers who need help with a mixed-effects model, small businesses wanting survey analysis, NGOs needing a baseline report, and market research firms.

One warning applies only to this track. A large share of "statistics help" requests online are students asking someone to do their graded assignment or thesis analysis for them. That is academic misconduct at most universities. It can also get your freelance account suspended and pulls your rates down. Take research consulting where the client stays the author, and say in your proposal that you advise and review rather than ghost-write graded work.

How to read the location line on a statistics job ad

The location line decides whether you can apply at all, so read it before anything else on the ad. Our guide on what EMEA means in a remote job description explains regional labels in detail. Here is the short version for statistics ads:

What the ad saysWhat it usually means for you in Nigeria
Remote, US onlyNot open. Requires US work authorisation.
Remote, UK or named EU countriesNot open unless you have the right to work there.
Remote, Johannesburg (or Nairobi)Usually needs right to work in that country. Ask before applying.
Remote, EMEASometimes open. Check whether Nigeria is in the country list.
Remote, Africa or NigeriaOpen. Confirm whether you'd be a contractor or an employee.
Worldwide or anywhereOpen, usually on a contractor basis.

One more trap: some company names include words like "Worldwide" or "Global". A company name says nothing about where an ad's applicants may live. Read the location field, not the employer's name.

Skills and qualifications employers ask for

Statistical foundations

Every track tests the same core: probability, estimation, hypothesis testing and its limits, regression (linear, logistic and count models), study design and missing data. On top of that, each track adds its own:

  • Clinical: survival analysis, mixed models for repeated measures, and estimands thinking
  • Survey: complex sampling, weighting and design-based variance
  • Evaluation: causal inference methods such as difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity and matching
  • Experimentation: power analysis, sequential testing and variance reduction

Software: R, Python, SAS and SQL

R is the most widely useful language across these tracks. The second edition of R for Data Science by Hadley Wickham, Mine Çetinkaya-Rundel and Garrett Grolemund is free to read online. It is the standard place to learn modern R data handling before moving on to modelling packages.

SAS still matters in clinical trials. Plenty of CRO ads ask for SAS first and R as a plus, but more are listing both. Stata is common in development economics and evaluation work. Python and SQL are expected in tech-company experimentation roles. If you know only SPSS, start learning R now, because remote ads rarely list SPSS as the main requirement.

Clinical standards: CDISC SDTM and ADaM

Clinical statistical programming has its own vocabulary. CDISC (the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium) publishes the data standards used in trial submissions. According to CDISC's standards overview, SDTM is the foundational standard for tabulation data and ADaM is the foundational standard for analysis data. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires SDTM, ADaM and Define-XML in submissions, and Japan's PMDA requires them too.

In practice, a statistical programmer builds SDTM and ADaM datasets and then produces the tables, listings and figures (TLFs) that go into a clinical study report. If you can explain an ADaM dataset and you've written TLF code, you'll pass the first technical screen at most CROs.

Degrees and experience

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics says statisticians typically need a master's degree to enter the occupation, though some entry-level positions accept a bachelor's degree. In practice:

  • Biostatistician roles usually ask for an MSc in statistics or biostatistics, and senior roles ask for several years of trial experience.
  • Statistical programmer roles accept a BSc more often, alongside clinical programming experience.
  • Survey and evaluation roles weigh fieldwork and publications alongside the degree.
  • Experimentation roles care more about what you've shipped than about your degree title.

A Nigerian BSc or HND in statistics plus a strong portfolio can get you into programming, survey and freelance work. For biostatistician titles at CROs, a master's is often a hard requirement.

Certifications: what's worth paying for

Most statistics employers hire on degrees and demonstrated work, not certificates. The exception is SAS, where certification is a common signal for clinical programming.

As of October 2026, SAS lists these on its own pages:

  • The SAS Base Programming Specialist certification (exam A00-231) costs $180, charged in US dollars worldwide (about ₦245,000 at ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN rate of 23 October 2026). It is a performance-based exam with a 135-minute limit, delivered through SAS and Pearson VUE. SAS links free exam guides, webinars, tutorials and a SAS Viya trial for preparation.
  • The SAS Statistical Business Analyst certification (exam A00-240, regression and modelling) also costs $180, but SAS states that this exam retires on 30 November 2026. Don't start preparing for it now. Check SAS's site for any replacement first.

If you're aiming at CROs, take the Base Programming exam once you can already write clinical-style SAS code. A certificate on its own won't get you past a technical test. Don't pay for certificates in tracks where employers don't ask for them, such as survey and evaluation work, where publications and project reports carry more weight.

What remote statistics jobs pay

There's no reliable public dataset of what Nigeria-based remote statisticians earn, so we won't invent one. What we can give you is the US benchmark and an honest explanation of how your offer is likely to compare.

US statisticians, May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, annual gross pay, all statisticians employed in the US):

MeasureUS annual payNaira equivalent
Lowest 10% earned less than$64,000about ₦87.2m
Median$105,650about ₦143.9m
Highest 10% earned more than$174,050about ₦237.1m

Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026).

By industry, BLS reports median pay of $167,180 in computer systems design, $132,620 in the federal government, $130,590 in scientific research and development, and $100,900 in healthcare and social assistance.

These are benchmarks for people employed in the US, not offers for someone working from Nigeria. Many employers set pay by location, and remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually well below US local pay. Development research consultancies often pay daily or per-deliverable rates set by the project budget. Freelance consulting depends entirely on your niche and track record. Pay tends to be highest in tech-company experimentation and in clinical programming at global rates. It tends to be lowest in generic freelance "data analysis" work.

Example (hypothetical): a Lagos-based statistical programmer is offered a contractor role at $2,500 a month. At ₦1,362 to $1 that is about ₦3,405,000 a month before fees and tax. As a contractor, the programmer pays for their own power backup, internet and pension, and gets no paid leave unless the contract says otherwise. That is why you should compare offers on take-home value, not the headline figure.

For how you'll actually receive the money (Payoneer, Wise, Grey, Deel withdrawals and domiciliary accounts), see our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria. For what you owe at home, see tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

Building evidence that you can do the work

Statistics hiring is sceptical by nature. A line saying "proficient in regression" proves nothing. A short, reproducible piece of work does. Pick one or two projects that match the track you're targeting:

  1. Clinical programming: Take a public or synthetic clinical-style dataset, derive an ADaM-style analysis dataset, and produce a demographics table and a survival plot in SAS or R. Document every derivation the way a specification would.
  2. Survey statistics: Use a public household survey with its design variables. Compute weighted estimates with correct standard errors, then show how naive unweighted estimates differ.
  3. Evaluation: Replicate the main result of a published impact evaluation that has public replication data, then add one sensible robustness check of your own.
  4. Experimentation: Simulate an A/B test, run a power analysis, then show how peeking early inflates false positives. Write it up as a one-page memo for a product manager.
  5. Consulting: Write a two-page sample statistical analysis plan for a realistic research question. Clients buy clarity before they buy code.

Put the code on GitHub with a readme that a recruiter can skim in two minutes, and link one or two projects at the top of your CV. Our planned guide to building a portfolio for remote data science jobs covers presentation in more depth.

Working remotely as a statistician from Nigeria

Time zones

Clinical and European roles fit Nigerian hours well. As of late October 2026, London is on GMT, so a 9am to 5pm UK day runs from 10am to 6pm in Lagos. Central Europe is on the same time as Lagos in winter. US roles are harder: from 1 November 2026 US Eastern is six hours behind Lagos, so a 9am to 5pm New York day runs from 3pm to 11pm in Lagos. Experimentation work at US startups often expects some overlap for stand-ups and review meetings, so ask how many overlapping hours a role needs.

Data security and confidentiality

Clinical trial data and survey microdata are sensitive. Expect to work on an employer-issued laptop or through a virtual desktop, with rules against downloading data to personal devices. Some contracts forbid working from public places. Treat this as normal practice, not a red flag. A request to send your own data, or to pay for "secure software", is a red flag.

Power and internet

Long model runs and virtual desktop sessions don't survive a power cut. Budget for an inverter or solar backup and two internet routes, such as a fixed connection plus a MiFi or phone hotspot. If you're on a virtual desktop, a dropped connection can kill a job that's been running for hours. Save work often and learn to run long jobs on the remote server rather than in your session.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Applying to US-only ads. It wastes time and can get your profile filtered for future roles at the same company. Read the location line first.
  • Calling yourself a statistician on the strength of dashboards. Recruiters for statistics roles will test inference. If your experience is mostly reporting, apply as an analyst and build towards the statistician title.
  • Leaning on SPSS alone. Learn R, and add SAS if you're aiming at clinical work.
  • Ignoring CDISC. For CRO programming roles, not knowing SDTM and ADaM is usually disqualifying.
  • Taking thesis-for-hire gigs. They carry academic-misconduct risk and pay poorly.
  • Paying a "recruiter" for placement. Genuine employers don't charge applicants. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a remote statistician job from Nigeria without a master's degree?

Yes, for some tracks, but rarely for biostatistician titles at CROs. Statistical programming, survey analysis, experimentation and freelance consulting more often accept a BSc or HND plus strong evidence of skill. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists a master's as the typical entry requirement for statisticians, which matches what most clinical ads ask for.

Do I need SAS, or is R enough?

R is enough for most survey, evaluation, experimentation and consulting work. For clinical statistical programming, SAS is still commonly required, though more CRO ads now list R alongside it. If clinical trials are your target, learn both.

Are remote biostatistician jobs open to Nigerians?

Some are, but many aren't. As of October 2026, the remote statistics roles we checked at ICON plc listed Johannesburg as their only African location and didn't name Nigeria. Search CRO career pages, filter by location, and only apply where Nigeria, Africa, EMEA including Nigeria, or worldwide is stated.

How much do remote statisticians earn?

The US median for statisticians was $105,650 a year in May 2025, according to BLS, but that is a benchmark for US-based employees. Pay for Nigeria-based remote statisticians is usually lower and varies a lot by track, employer and contract type. Compare offers on take-home value after fees, tax and the costs you carry as a contractor.

What is the difference between a statistician and a data analyst in remote jobs?

A data analyst mainly reports and explains what happened, using SQL and dashboards. A statistician designs studies or experiments and makes defensible inferences with quantified uncertainty. Statistician roles test probability, modelling and study design much harder in interviews.

Is freelance statistics work on online platforms legitimate?

Much of it is, especially research consulting for academics, NGOs and businesses. Avoid requests to complete graded assignments or thesis analysis on a student's behalf, because that is academic misconduct and can get your account suspended. Never pay a client or an "agent" to access work.

Which statistics job titles should I search for?

Try "biostatistician", "statistical programmer", "clinical SAS programmer", "survey statistician", "sampling statistician", "research statistician", "experimentation analyst" and "data scientist, product". Statistics work is often advertised under data scientist or analyst titles, so read the duties, not just the title.

Key takeaways

  • Remote statistics jobs open to Nigerians cluster in four places: clinical research companies, development research and surveys, product experimentation, and freelance consulting.
  • The location line decides eligibility. A city such as Johannesburg usually means you need the right to work in that country.
  • R is the most useful language across tracks. Clinical programming also needs SAS and CDISC SDTM and ADaM.
  • SAS's Statistical Business Analyst exam (A00-240) retires on 30 November 2026, so check before paying $180 for it.
  • US pay figures (a $105,650 median in May 2025) are benchmarks, not what a Nigeria-based worker will typically be offered.
  • One reproducible project matched to your target track does more for your application than a list of tools.

Next steps

Pick your track first. Then search WorkRemote's remote tech and data listings for "statistician", "biostatistics" and "statistical programmer".
