Employees using laptop write emails solving tasks

If you can send a proper email, keep a tidy Google Sheet, type steadily and join a video call without fuss, you can apply for real remote jobs. The ones open to beginners with basic computer skills are mostly admin support, data entry and data cleaning, chat and email customer support, content moderation, AI data annotation, transcription and appointment scheduling. These jobs are real, but they are competitive, and many of them pay less than people hope.

The hard part is rarely the computer. Most beginners get rejected because their "basic" is more basic than the employer expects, because they can't show proof, or because they apply for roles they aren't allowed to take from Nigeria. This guide sets out what "basic computer skills" means to a remote employer and which jobs match that level. It also covers how to get a remote admin job from where you are now, and what to check before you trust any offer.

Quick answer

Beginners with basic computer skills can apply for remote data entry, admin and virtual assistant support, chat or email support, content moderation, AI annotation and rating, transcription and scheduling work. Employers expect confident use of email, Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, video calls and steady typing. Check every ad's location label to confirm Nigeria is allowed, and never pay to get a job.

What "basic computer skills" means to a remote employer

When a Nigerian job ad says "computer literate", it often means you can type a letter. A remote employer abroad means more than that, because nobody is in the office to help you. You are expected to sort out small tech problems yourself and to communicate entirely in writing.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics describes administrative assistants as using word processing, spreadsheet and database software, presentations and videoconferencing. Remote employers treat that as the floor.

The basic skills checklist

Use this as a self-audit. If you can do everything in the left column without looking anything up, you are at the "basic" level remote employers mean.

SkillWhat employers expectHow to prove it
EmailClear subject lines, replies within the thread, attachments, no slangA sample email in your portfolio
Google Docs or WordHeadings, tables, comments, suggestion mode, PDF exportA formatted document you made
Google Sheets or ExcelSorting, filters, simple formulas (SUM, COUNTIF), removing duplicatesA cleaned spreadsheet sample
File handlingShared folders, naming files properly, Google Drive permissionsDescribe your filing system in interview
Video callsZoom, Google Meet or Teams: join, share screen, muteThe interview itself
TypingSteady speed with few errorsA typing test screenshot
Chat toolsSlack or Teams, short and clear messagesWritten test answers
Online safetySpotting phishing, using two-factor authenticationMention it, then practise it

Basic versus intermediate

The line matters because it decides which ads are worth your time. "Basic" covers the table above. "Intermediate" adds things like VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP, pivot tables, a CRM such as HubSpot, a ticketing tool such as Zendesk or Freshdesk, and Canva. Many ads labelled "entry level" actually want two or three intermediate tools. The good news is that most of those tools have free tiers or free training, so the gap can be closed in weeks, not years.

Remote jobs that match basic computer skills

The table below covers the main job types and how realistic each one is for a beginner applying from Nigeria. "Difficulty" is our editorial judgement based on how much the role demands and how many people compete for it. It is not a statistic.

JobBasic skills it usesDifficulty for a beginner
Data entry and data cleaningSheets or Excel, typing, accuracyEasy skills, heavy competition, many scams
Admin assistant or virtual assistantEmail, calendars, Docs, DriveMedium: employers want reliability proof
Chat and email customer supportTyping, written English, chat toolsMedium: often trained on the job
Content moderationJudgement, policy reading, web toolsMedium: hours can be hard
AI data annotation and ratingBrowser tools, attention to detail, languageEasy to join, work is irregular
TranscriptionTyping, listening, Word or DocsEasy to start, pay per minute of audio is low
Appointment setting and schedulingCalendars, email, phone or chatMedium: often part commission

Data entry and data cleaning

Data entry means moving information from one place to another: invoices into a spreadsheet, contact details into a CRM, product listings into an online shop. Data cleaning means fixing what is already there, such as duplicates, inconsistent spellings and missing fields.

Be honest with yourself about this one. Plain copy-typing is the work software is replacing fastest, and "data entry from home" is the most common bait in Nigerian job scams. The better openings are usually labelled "data operations", "data quality" or "research assistant", and they ask for spreadsheet skills, not just typing. Our data entry clerk career guide covers the tools and routes in more detail.

Admin assistant and virtual assistant work

Remote admin work means managing someone's inbox and calendar, booking meetings across time zones, preparing documents, keeping shared folders in order and chasing replies. Small businesses abroad often hire a virtual assistant (VA) on contract rather than an admin assistant as an employee. The tasks are similar, but the arrangement is different. The section below on admin jobs covers this route in full.

Chat and email customer support

Non-voice support suits people with fast, clean typing and good written English. You answer customers through a help desk tool, follow written policies and pass harder problems to a colleague. Many support teams train new hires on their own tools, so basic skills plus good writing can be enough. See the customer support specialist career guide and, for the beginner route, how to get a remote customer service job without experience.

Content moderation

Moderators review posts, images or comments against a platform's rules. The computer side is basic. The hard parts are judgement, consistency and the content itself, which can be distressing. The content moderator career guide explains what the work involves day to day.

AI data annotation, rating and language work

AI companies need people to label text, images and audio, compare chatbot answers and check whether output is accurate in a particular language. This is one of the few categories where speaking Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or Nigerian Pidgin well is an advantage.

Example (as of October 2026): Welo Global's AI Trainers Network – Yoruba posting lists "Nigeria, Remote" and asks for native or near-native Yoruba, English proficiency, comfort with digital tools and attention to detail. Tasks include annotating text, images or audio, evaluating search results or chatbot responses, and testing prompts. The posting says plainly that it is not an active job opening: applicants join a contributor network and are contacted when a project fits, and pay is described per project. When we checked, the company's Lever job board showed matching postings for Hausa and Igbo too. Postings like these change often, so check the live ad.

That is typical of this work. It is real and open to Nigerians, but it is project-based and irregular, so treat it as a first income and some experience rather than a salary. The AI data annotator career guide and how to find legitimate AI training jobs online go further.

Transcription

Transcription means listening to audio and typing it accurately, often with timestamps and speaker labels. Fast typing and good listening are what count. Platforms usually pay per audio minute, so beginners earn little until they get quick. Start with the transcriptionist career guide.

Appointment setting and scheduling

Appointment setters book calls for a sales team or a service business, by email, chat or phone. The skills are calendars, CRMs and polite persistence. Many of these roles combine a small base pay with commission, so read the pay structure carefully. The appointment setter career guide explains how the role works.

How to get a remote admin job with basic computer skills

Remote admin roles are reachable with basic skills, but employers worry about one thing above all: will this person be reliable when nobody is watching? Your application has to answer that before they ask it.

Know which admin titles to search for

The same work hides under different titles. Search for all of these:

  • Administrative assistant (remote)
  • Virtual assistant or executive virtual assistant
  • Operations assistant
  • Admin support or office coordinator
  • Scheduling coordinator
  • Data and admin assistant

Executive assistant roles usually need several years of experience, and BLS notes the same for executive secretaries in the US. Leave those for later.

Build three proof pieces in a weekend

A beginner's CV saying "proficient in Microsoft Office" proves nothing. Three small samples prove a lot:

  1. A cleaned spreadsheet. Take a messy public dataset or a made-up contact list. Remove duplicates, standardise phone numbers to +234 format, add a filter and a COUNTIF summary.
  2. A calendar plan. A one-page document showing a week of meetings for a fictional manager in London with clients in New York, with every time given in both zones.
  3. An email set. Three short emails: rescheduling a meeting, chasing an unpaid invoice politely, and confirming travel details.

Put them in a shared Google Drive folder set to "anyone with the link can view", and test the link from a browser where you aren't signed in.

Write the CV around tasks, not titles

If you have handled admin for a church, a family business, your department, a student association or your NYSC place of primary assignment, that counts. Describe the task and the tool: "Kept attendance records for 120 members in Google Sheets and sent weekly summaries by email." For the CV format itself, see how to make a beginner remote work CV.

Apply where the employer is allowed to hire you

Search the remote admin and HR listings on WorkRemote. Each listing shows where applicants may live, which saves you from the most common wasted application. For degree questions, see remote administrative jobs that do not require a degree. For the VA route, see how to become a virtual assistant with no experience.

Expect a test

Remote admin hiring often includes a practical task: tidy a spreadsheet, draft a reply, schedule meetings across time zones. Do it carefully, check the time zones twice and submit before the deadline. A clean, slightly slow answer beats a fast, sloppy one.

What these jobs pay (and why the US figures aren't your offer)

There is no reliable published dataset of what Nigeria-based beginners earn in these roles, so we won't invent one. What we can give you is the US benchmark, so you can tell when an offer is unusual.

US occupation (BLS, May 2025)Median payMonthly equivalent
Secretaries and administrative assistants$48,310 a year ($23.23 an hour)About $4,026 (about ₦5.5 million)
Information clerks$45,430 a year ($21.84 an hour)About $3,786 (about ₦5.2 million)

Naira figures use WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026) and are rounded. Sources: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook pages for secretaries and administrative assistants and information clerks. These are gross medians for US-based workers.

Those numbers are not what a Nigeria-based beginner will be offered. Companies hiring internationally usually pay contractors abroad well below US local pay, and beginner roles sit at the bottom of any range. Treat the US median as a ceiling for comparison. What moves your pay up is a published salary band in the ad, fluency in a second language, overlap with US hours, and moving from pure data entry to admin or support work with judgement in it. For one role in detail, see the administrative assistant salary guide. The live guide to remote jobs that pay in dollars covers the wider picture.

Can you apply from Nigeria? Reading the location label

Many "remote" jobs are remote only within one country. The location label tells you which kind you're looking at. Read it before you read the job description.

Label you seeWhat it usually means for you
"Nigeria, Remote" or "Africa"You can apply
"Remote, Worldwide" or "Anywhere"Usually yes, but check the text for exclusions
"EMEA"Often yes (Europe, Middle East and Africa), check the countries
A list of named countriesOnly those countries, even if it says remote
"Remote, US" or "US only"No, unless you're authorised to work in the US

A live example: when we checked in October 2026, design company B12's Greenhouse job board listed one role as remote in a fixed set of countries (United States, Canada, Brazil, Spain, the Philippines and India) and other roles as "Anywhere". Same company, same week, different rules for each role. Why some remote jobs are not available to Nigerians explains the payroll and legal reasons behind this.

Also check the arrangement. Most beginner roles from abroad are contractor or freelance work, not employment with benefits. Our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements explains what that means for leave, tax and notice.

Nigeria-specific setup: power, internet, hours and payment

Equipment that's enough to start

You don't need a new MacBook. A laptop that runs Chrome with several tabs open, a headset with a microphone, and a webcam (built-in is fine) cover most beginner roles. A phone alone is not enough for most of them, because admin and data work need a full keyboard and a proper screen. For a fuller list, see what equipment you need for a remote job.

Power and internet backup

Employers don't accept "NEPA took light" as a reason for missing a shift. Before you accept a role with fixed hours, sort out:

  • An inverter or solar setup that can run your laptop and router for a full shift, or a generator plan.
  • Two internet routes: for example, a home broadband or MiFi from one provider and a phone hotspot on a different network.
  • A quiet corner for calls, even if it's just a fixed spot with a curtain behind you.

Time zones in Lagos time

Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. Here is what common shifts look like from Lagos as of late October 2026:

Employer hoursLagos time nowNotes
UK 9am to 5pm (GMT)10am to 6pmSame as UK time in summer (BST)
Central Europe 9am to 5pm (CET)9am to 5pm8am to 4pm Lagos in summer
US Eastern 9am to 5pm3pm to 11pmFrom 1 November 2026 (EST); 2pm to 10pm in summer
US Pacific 9am to 5pm6pm to 2am5pm to 1am in summer

UK and European hours are the easiest fit for Nigerian beginners, and US support roles often want people who can cover their evenings.

Getting paid

Beginner contracts usually pay through a platform (Upwork, Deel or Remote.com) or directly into a USD account with Payoneer, Grey, Raenest or a domiciliary account. The fees and steps are covered in our guide on how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria. Income from abroad can still be taxable, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 position.

How to close the gap from basic to hireable, cheaply

If your self-audit showed gaps, fix them with free material before paying for any course. Two options we checked in October 2026:

  • LearnFree offers free tutorials including Computer Basics, Basic Computer Skills, Word, Excel, Google Sheets, Gmail, Outlook, a typing tutorial and internet safety.
  • Typing.com offers free typing lessons and tests. It mentions a paid "PLUS Edition" but doesn't price it on the homepage, so you don't need it to start.

Example (hypothetical): a four-week plan for someone who can already use email and Word.

  1. Week 1: daily 15-minute typing practice, plus LearnFree's Google Sheets lessons. Build the cleaned spreadsheet sample.
  2. Week 2: Google Calendar and Drive sharing. Build the time-zone calendar plan.
  3. Week 3: write the three-email set. Sign up for free tiers of Slack, Trello and HubSpot CRM and click around until they feel familiar.
  4. Week 4: rewrite your CV around tasks, put the samples in a Drive folder, and apply to 10 to 15 well-matched roles.

Common mistakes and scams to avoid

Mistakes that cost beginners interviews

  • Applying to "US only" or named-country roles because the word "remote" was in the title.
  • Writing "computer literate" or "proficient in MS Office" with nothing to back it up.
  • Sending a CV as a Word file with broken formatting instead of a PDF.
  • Ignoring the test instructions, especially time zones and file naming.
  • Signing up for every data entry site that promises daily pay.

Data entry and "typing job" scams

Watch for these warning signs:

  • You're asked to pay for "training", a "starter kit", software or a "registration fee".
  • The interview happens only on Telegram or WhatsApp text, with no company email address.
  • The pay is far above the US median shown earlier for simple typing.
  • They send you a cheque or funds to "buy equipment" and ask you to send part of it back.
  • They ask for your BVN, bank login or card PIN before any contract exists.

WorkRemote never charges anyone to apply for a job, and no real employer does either. For a full rundown, read how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

What jobs can I do from home with only basic computer skills?

Data entry and data cleaning, admin and virtual assistant support, chat and email customer support, content moderation, AI data annotation and rating, transcription and appointment scheduling. Each one builds on email, documents, spreadsheets and typing. Check that the employer accepts applicants in Nigeria before you apply.

How fast do I need to type for a remote job?

There is no universal number, so read each ad. Chat support and transcription reward speed most, while admin work rewards accuracy and clear writing more. Practise daily, keep a recent typing test result, and never trade accuracy for speed.

Can I get a remote admin job with only basic computer skills?

Yes, for assistant-level roles, if you can prove reliability and organisation. Build a cleaned spreadsheet, a time-zone calendar plan and sample emails, then apply to admin assistant, VA and operations assistant roles that list Nigeria, Africa or worldwide eligibility. Executive assistant roles usually need years of experience.

Is remote data entry legit in Nigeria?

Some of it is, but data entry is also the most common cover for job scams. Real roles come from identifiable companies with a website, a written contract and no upfront fees. Any "typing job" that asks you to pay for registration, training or software is a scam.

Do I need a degree for these beginner remote jobs?

Usually not. BLS lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry education for US administrative assistants and information clerks, and many international employers hiring contractors care more about tested skills than certificates. Some employers still ask for one, so read each ad.

Can I do these jobs on my phone?

Rarely. Some AI rating and moderation tasks work on a phone, but admin, data and support roles need a laptop, a proper keyboard and a headset. A phone is useful as your backup internet hotspot.

Do AI trainer jobs pay a regular salary?

Usually not. Programmes like Welo Global's AI Trainers Network are contributor pools where you are offered projects when they match your skills, with pay set per project. They are good for first income and experience, but don't rely on them alone for monthly bills.

Key takeaways

  • "Basic computer skills" for a remote employer means confident email, Docs or Word, Sheets or Excel, file sharing, video calls and steady typing, plus proof of each.
  • The realistic beginner roles are admin and VA support, data cleaning, chat and email support, content moderation, AI annotation, transcription and scheduling.
  • For remote admin jobs, three small proof pieces (a spreadsheet, a calendar plan and sample emails) do more than a list of skills.
  • US median pay (about $48,310 a year for admin assistants, May 2025) is a benchmark, not what Nigeria-based beginners are offered.
  • Read the location label first: "US only" or a list of named countries rules you out, however "remote" the job sounds.
  • Never pay to get a job, and be most careful with "data entry from home" offers.
