The best-paid remote writing jobs are specialised ones: technical writing, UX writing (also called content design), medical and regulatory writing, and grant or proposal writing. General blog and SEO content writing sits well below all four, because good prose alone is easy to find and specialist knowledge is not.

If you write well and you're tired of $15 blog posts, this guide shows where the money is. We compare the four specialisms using pay data from named sources: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and a 2025 salary survey of UX writers. We explain why those figures are benchmarks and not what a Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered. We show you how to read the location line on real ads we opened in October 2026. Finally, we match common Nigerian backgrounds (engineering, pharmacy, NGO work, design) to the specialism each one suits, and give you a 90-day plan for making the switch.

Quick answer

Strong writers earn the most remotely in technical writing (US median $90,390 a year, May 2025), UX writing and content design (global survey median $110,000 in 2025), medical and regulatory writing, and grant or proposal writing. Nigeria-based writers can get this work, mostly as contractors, but pay is usually below US levels. Many ads also restrict applicants by country, so check the location line on every vacancy.

Why specialised writing pays more than general content writing

Employers pay for writing that reduces a cost or brings in money. A clear API guide cuts support tickets. A good error message in an app stops customers leaving. An accurate clinical study report gets a drug through review. A strong grant proposal wins funding. Each of these needs subject knowledge as well as writing skill, so fewer people can do the work.

General content writing has the opposite problem. Thousands of writers worldwide can produce a competent 1,500-word blog post, and AI tools now produce first drafts for free. That pushes rates down, especially on open freelance marketplaces.

The data shows the gap. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) puts the median pay of technical writers at $90,390 a year in May 2025. The median for the broader writers and authors group is $76,910. Even that $76,910 flatters general writing: BLS notes that about 65% of writers and authors are self-employed, and its wage figures exclude self-employed people. The median therefore describes salaried writers only, not the freelancers who make up most of the field.

The four highest-paying writing specialisms compared

The table compares the specialisms on the evidence we could verify as of October 2026. All figures are in US dollars and are gross annual pay unless stated.

SpecialismWhat you writePay benchmarkSource and type

Two cautions apply to every row. First, the US figures describe people living and employed in the US. Second, survey medians are self-reported by people who chose to respond. Use them to understand which specialisms pay best relative to each other, not as a promise of what you will be paid.

Technical writing: the most accessible high-paying route

A technical writer explains how a product works to the people who use or build on it. In remote tech companies, that usually means developer documentation (API references, SDK guides, quick-start tutorials), help-centre articles, release notes and internal knowledge bases. BLS describes the job as creating manuals, how-to guides and other documents that explain complex technical information. It also notes that employers usually want a degree plus knowledge of a technical field such as engineering or computer science.

Why it suits Nigerian writers

Technical writing is the high-paying specialism most open to Nigeria-based applicants, for three reasons:

  • The employers are mostly software companies, which are the companies most likely to hire contractors abroad.
  • Your work sample can show your skill directly. A public documentation sample on GitHub is easy for a hiring manager to check.
  • Lagos and Abuja have a large pool of developers and engineering graduates, and someone who can both read code and write clearly is rare everywhere.

Skills and tools employers ask for

  • Writing in Markdown and working with "docs-as-code" (documentation stored in Git and reviewed like code)
  • Reading and testing APIs with tools such as Postman or curl, and understanding OpenAPI specifications
  • Documentation platforms such as Confluence, Notion, GitBook, Docusaurus or ReadMe
  • Enough programming to run sample code in Python or JavaScript and spot when it's wrong
  • A style guide habit: the Google developer documentation style guide or the Microsoft Writing Style Guide

BLS projects only 1% employment growth for US technical writers from 2025 to 2035, slower than average. Expect competition, especially for junior roles. The writers who do well pair writing with a technical niche such as cloud, payments, developer tools or security.

Our remote technical writer career guide covers courses and the full path, and the technical writer salary guide gives pay in dollars and naira.

UX writing and content design: highest survey pay, hardest to break into

UX writers (more and more often called content designers) write the words people see inside a product: button labels, onboarding screens, error messages, empty states, notifications. The job is part writing and part design. You test wording with users, work in Figma beside designers, and argue for clarity with product managers.

What the pay data says

The UX Content Collective's 2025 salary survey collected 598 responses from more than 40 countries in April and May 2025. The figures are self-reported and in US dollars:

CountryMedian salary (2025)
Global$110,000
United States$147,000
Australia$90,000
Germany$81,235
United Kingdom$80,959
India$44,345

Without contractors and anyone laid off in the previous 24 months, the global median is $107,000. The survey reports no figure for Nigeria or any African country. The country figures exclude bonuses and stock.

The India figure is worth noting. It is the clearest sign in this data of how location changes pay for the same job. Treat it as a rough guide to what an employer paying by location might offer a Nigeria-based content designer. It is not a Nigerian figure.

The honest catch

Content design roles are fewer than technical writing roles. They usually sit inside product teams that want overlap with US or European working hours, and many ask for two or more years of product experience. When we searched Lever and Greenhouse job boards in October 2026, most UX writer ads we found were tied to a city or to Latin America, not open worldwide. If you come from graphic design, product design or marketing, this is a strong target. If you're starting from blogging alone, technical writing is usually a faster way in.

See the UX writer career guide for portfolio and course advice.

Medical and regulatory writing: well paid, credential-heavy

Medical writers produce documents for pharmaceutical companies, contract research organisations (CROs) and medical communications agencies. Regulatory writers focus on documents sent to regulators. These include clinical trial protocols, clinical study reports, investigator brochures and sections of the Common Technical Document (CTD), the standard format for drug applications. Other medical writers produce journal manuscripts, conference posters and education materials for doctors.

Who gets hired

This specialism rewards a science background more than any other. Pharmacists, doctors, pharmacologists, microbiologists and biochemistry graduates have a real advantage, because the work assumes you can read trial data and understand ICH guidelines (the international standards for clinical research). Nigeria produces many pharmacy and life-science graduates, which makes this a realistic target for people who already have that training.

Pay: what we could and could not verify

The two main professional bodies publish salary surveys: the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) and the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA). As of October 2026, AMWA's current report is sold to non-members, and we could not open its figures. The EMWA 2021 survey page we opened gives the sample size (400 members) but no figures. We are therefore not quoting a medical writing salary. In our searches, advertised contract rates for experienced regulatory writers in the US were well above general content rates. Treat it as a high-paying specialism whose top rates go to people with years of pharma or CRO experience.

The Nigeria-specific limit

Many medical writing roles are restricted to countries where the CRO already has an entity. In October 2026 we found home-based medical writer openings in South Africa and the US, but none open to Nigeria. The usual route from Nigeria is freelance work for medical communications agencies, or an adjacent role first. A common example is pharmacovigilance (drug safety case writing), which builds the regulatory knowledge that writing roles ask for. Our planned guide to getting a remote medical writing job covers this route in detail.

Grant and proposal writing: high value, but often location-bound

Grant writers prepare funding applications for nonprofits, universities, health organisations and social enterprises. Proposal writers do similar work for companies bidding on contracts and tenders. Pay reflects the money at stake: one funded grant can be worth many times the writer's fee.

Pay benchmarks

BLS has no separate category for grant writers, so the nearest official benchmark is the writers and authors median of $76,910 (US, May 2025, employees only). The Grant Professionals Association runs an annual compensation survey, but we could not open its results, so we don't quote them.

Why location matters so much here

US grant writing often depends on knowing US federal and foundation funders, and many ads restrict who can apply. A live example: a freelance, part-time Medical Grant Writer role listed on Remotive for a rare-disease nonprofit was marked "USA only" with pay unspecified when we checked in October 2026.

The opportunity for Nigerian writers is closer to home. International development funders, foundations and multilateral donors fund a great deal of work in Nigeria and across Africa. NGOs, research groups and consultancies working in health, education and agriculture need people who can write to those funders' formats and logframes (results frameworks). Experience at a Nigerian NGO or programme office translates directly. See the grant writer career guide, and look out for our planned guides to remote proposal writer careers and remote nonprofit jobs.

Other well-paid writing routes worth knowing

AI training and evaluation work for expert writers

AI companies hire experienced writers to write and grade model outputs. As an example, an ad posted on Remote Career Africa on 16 October 2026 for a technical writer contract with Mercor offered $80 to $85 an hour, paid weekly via Stripe or Wise. The work was an independent-contractor role: a five-day pilot at five hours a day, then possibly month to month. It asked for at least three years of experience leading developer documentation, plus a calibration test. The ad does not say which countries are eligible and does not mention Nigeria, so confirm before you apply.

Calculation from that ad, assuming you're eligible: the pilot is 25 hours, which at $80 an hour comes to $2,000. That's about ₦2,724,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026), before transfer fees and tax. This kind of work is project-based and can end at short notice. Our planned guide to finding legitimate AI training jobs covers how to tell real platforms from fake ones.

Direct-response copywriting and ghostwriting

Sales copywriting (landing pages, email sequences, ads) can pay well because results are measurable. Pay depends on proven conversions more than on credentials, which helps self-taught Nigerian writers. See the copywriter salary guide. Ghostwriting for founders and executives (LinkedIn posts, books, newsletters) is another higher-rate niche, usually found through referrals rather than job boards.

What Nigeria-based writers can realistically expect to earn

The benchmarks above are not what most Nigeria-based writers will be offered. Remote pay for people living in Nigeria is usually below US local pay, for three reasons:

  • Location-based pay bands. Many companies set pay by where you live. The India median in the UX survey shows how large that difference can be.
  • Contractor status. Most international employers hire Nigeria-based writers as independent contractors, not employees. You get no pension, paid leave or health cover unless the contract says so, and you pay your own costs. Our guide on contractor versus employer-of-record employment explains the difference.
  • Your own costs. Power backup, data, transfer fees and tax all come out of your rate.

Some companies pay the same band worldwide, or pay by experience rather than location, and those are the roles to target. Our planned article on remote jobs that pay based on experience rather than location covers how to spot them.

Example (hypothetical): A Lagos-based technical writer agrees a contract at $3,000 a month with a European software company. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM rate, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦4,086,000 a month before costs. Suppose the writer spends money every month on fuel or solar maintenance, two data plans and withdrawal fees. Take-home pay is then noticeably lower, and income tax under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 is due on what's left. Work out your real figure before you accept an offer. Our guides on receiving dollar payments in Nigeria and tax for remote workers explain both.

How to read the location line before you apply

Every remote ad says where applicants may live, and that line decides whether your application counts. When we checked in October 2026 we saw:

What the ad saysWhat it means for you
"USA only" or a single US stateNot open to Nigeria-based applicants
A city or one country, e.g. South AfricaNot open unless you live there
A list of countries that includes NigeriaOpen to you
"Anywhere" or "worldwide"Usually open, but confirm payment and time-zone terms
"Fully remote" with no country statedUnclear: ask the recruiter or check the application form

A real example of the third row: an Africa jobs board, Remote4Africa's writing category, listed a Content and Social Media Manager role on 17 October 2026. The role was open to applicants in Egypt, Argentina, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa. On the same page, other writing roles were limited to Kenya or South Africa. Eligibility changes, so always check the live ad. Our planned guides explain how to verify whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents and what "worldwide remote" means.

NGO, development or academic researchGrant / proposal writingRewrite a past proposal as a sample
Graphic or product design, marketingUX writing / content designRedesign the text of an app you use

Your degree matters less than evidence you can do the work. A pharmacist with three strong regulatory-style samples will beat a general writer with fifty blog posts for a medical writing contract.

A 90-day plan to move into a high-paying writing specialism

  1. Week 1: choose one specialism and one industry. "Technical writing for payments APIs" is a plan. "Writing" is not.
  2. Weeks 1 to 2: study the house standards. Read the style guide the field uses: the Google developer documentation style guide for technical writing, ICH guidelines for regulatory writing, or a target funder's call for proposals for grant work.
  3. Weeks 2 to 6: build three work samples. Write samples that look like the real job. A technical writer documents an open-source tool and opens a pull request. A UX writer rewrites the onboarding flow of a real app and explains the choices. A grant writer drafts a proposal to a real, open funding call. Our planned guide to building a professional writing portfolio shows how to present them.
  4. Weeks 4 to 8: rename yourself. Update your CV headline and LinkedIn to the specialism ("Technical writer, developer documentation"), and move general content work lower down.
  5. Weeks 6 to 12: apply only where you're eligible. Shortlist ads that list Nigeria, Africa or worldwide. Tailor each application to the samples that match.
  6. Weeks 8 to 12: take assessments seriously. Most specialist roles set a writing test. Treat it as the real job: follow the brief exactly and keep to the deadline.
  7. Every week: price for the specialism. Don't quote content-writing rates for technical or regulatory work. Our planned guide to pricing writing services for global clients covers how.

Working hours, power and setup

Specialist writing is less tied to the clock than support work, but most roles expect some overlap for reviews and calls. Nigeria is on WAT (UTC+1) all year. London is on GMT from 25 October 2026, so Lagos is one hour ahead in winter. US Eastern moves to EST on 1 November 2026, six hours behind Lagos, so a 10am New York review call is 4pm in Lagos. US Pacific, where many tech companies sit, is nine hours behind in winter.

Build your setup for missed deadlines, not ideal days. You need an inverter or solar backup for at least a full working session, two internet sources (for example a fixed connection plus a MiFi or phone hotspot), and cloud-saved drafts so a power cut doesn't cost you a document.

Common mistakes and red flags

  • Calling yourself a "technical writer" with no technical samples. Hiring managers check. One real documentation sample beats a long list of claims.
  • Treating US medians as your target rate. Use them to compare specialisms, then research what the specific company pays Nigeria-based contractors.
  • Applying to "USA only" ads. It wastes your time and can get your details flagged in the company's applicant tracking system.
  • Underpricing specialist work. Pricing a regulatory document like a blog post signals that you don't understand the work.
  • Paying for "writing tests" or "onboarding kits". Real employers never charge you to apply or to start. Read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.

Frequently asked questions

Which writing job pays the most remotely?

UX writing and content design had the highest median in the sources we checked: $110,000 globally in the UX Content Collective's 2025 survey, and $147,000 in the US. Technical writing follows, with a US median of $90,390 (BLS, May 2025). Experienced medical and regulatory writers can earn similar or higher rates, but we could not verify a public figure.

Can Nigerians get high-paying remote writing jobs?

Yes, when the employer accepts applicants based in Nigeria. Technical writing and AI documentation contracts are the most open to Nigeria-based applicants. Medical writing and US grant writing roles are more often restricted to particular countries. Check the location line on the live ad before you apply.

Do I need a degree to become a technical writer?

Not always, but it helps. BLS says US employers typically want a bachelor's degree and value knowledge of engineering or computer science. Remote software companies often hire on samples alone. A strong documentation portfolio on GitHub can make up for a non-technical degree.

How much can a Nigerian medical writer earn?

There's no reliable public figure for Nigeria-based medical writers. Pay depends on your arrangement (freelancing for an agency or contracting for a CRO), on your years of pharma experience and on the documents you can write. Regulatory documents such as clinical study reports pay more than general health content.

Is grant writing a good remote job for Nigerians?

Yes, if you target funders that work in Africa. Many US grant writing roles are open only to US residents. International NGOs, research groups and development consultancies working in Nigeria often need proposal writers who know donor formats.

Will AI replace high-paying writing jobs?

AI is replacing general content writing faster than specialist work. Technical, medical and regulatory writing all need accurate checking against real products, data or regulations, and that is where the value lies. AI companies also hire expert writers to train and evaluate their models. Our planned guide to AI writing editor roles covers this further.

How do I move from content writing to technical writing?

Pick a technical niche, learn Markdown and Git, and document a real open-source tool or API. Then put that sample at the top of your CV and LinkedIn. Most content writers can make credible applications within two to three months if they build real samples.

Key takeaways

  • The best-paid writing specialisms are technical writing, UX writing and content design, medical and regulatory writing, and grant or proposal writing.
  • US benchmarks (technical writers $90,390, BLS May 2025; UX writers $147,000, 2025 survey) are not what Nigeria-based contractors are usually offered.
  • Technical writing is the most realistic high-paying route for most Nigerian writers, especially those who can read code.
  • Medical writing suits pharmacy and life-science graduates. Grant writing suits people with NGO experience, especially with Africa-focused funders.
  • Read the location line on every ad: "USA only" or a single country excludes you, while a list that includes Nigeria or "worldwide" usually doesn't.
  • Specialist samples matter more than degrees or job titles, so build three before you apply.

Next steps

Choose one specialism from the table above and start your first work sample this week. Then search remote writing jobs on WorkRemote: each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live, so you can filter out ads that exclude Nigeria. After a search, use "Get email updates" to receive a free daily digest of new matching jobs. If you want help presenting your new specialism, our CV and LinkedIn review is part of Premium (₦29,999 a month), which also includes applications sent on your behalf and interview preparation.
