You find remote PHP developer jobs by aiming at Laravel first, searching the boards and company career pages where PHP teams actually post, and filtering hard for ads that accept applicants living in Nigeria. Most of the better-paid remote PHP work now sits inside Laravel product teams, with WordPress and WooCommerce agencies a close second.
The hard part isn't finding PHP ads. It's that many of them say "Remote" and then mean "remote within the US" or "remote within Germany's time zone". You can spend a week applying to jobs you were never eligible for.
This guide covers where remote PHP and Laravel jobs are posted, how to read location rules from Lagos, Enugu or Kano, what Laravel ads expect in late 2026, how to write a Laravel application that gets replies, and what pay to expect as a Nigeria-based developer. We name no employer as "hiring Nigerians" unless we could verify it. Instead, you'll learn how to check any ad yourself in a couple of minutes.
Quick answer
To find remote PHP developer jobs from Nigeria, search Laravel-specific boards such as LaraJobs, the company job boards hosted on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby, general remote boards, and WorkRemote.ng's tech listings. Apply only where the ad says worldwide, EMEA, Africa or Nigeria, or where it hires contractors anywhere. Show current skills (PHP 8.3+, Laravel 12 or 13, testing with Pest or PHPUnit, queues) and a deployed project.
Is PHP still a good bet for remote work in 2026?
Yes, as long as you treat it as a professional backend language and not a 2012 skill. PHP still runs most of the web. W3Techs reports that PHP is used by 69.2% of websites whose server-side language is known, as of 27 October 2026. All those sites need someone to maintain, upgrade and extend them, and plenty of that work is done remotely.
The language itself keeps moving. According to PHP's own supported versions page, PHP 8.5 (released 20 November 2025) and 8.4 get active support, 8.3 gets security fixes only until 31 December 2027, and 8.2 reaches end of life on 31 December 2026. A lot of remote PHP work is upgrade work, so companies notice when a candidate can talk about moving a codebase from 7.4 or 8.1 to 8.4.
What has changed is the shape of demand. "PHP developer" on its own is a weaker job title than it used to be. Ads are now more likely to say "Laravel engineer", "full-stack engineer (Laravel/Vue)", "WordPress developer" or "backend engineer, PHP". You need to search for all of those.
The three kinds of remote PHP work
Before you search, decide which of these markets you're aiming at. They pay differently, hire differently and need different portfolios.
| Type of work | Typical employer | What they test | Pay pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laravel product engineering | SaaS companies, startups | Architecture, testing, queues, APIs | Salaried or long contract |
| WordPress and WooCommerce | Agencies, plugin companies, e-commerce brands | Themes, plugins, hooks, performance | Hourly or project, some salaried |
| Legacy PHP and Symfony maintenance | Older companies, agencies | Debugging, upgrades, refactoring | Contract, often hourly |
Laravel product teams usually pay best and are the most stable. Laravel gets its own section below.
WordPress work is the easiest to enter and has the most freelance volume. It's a real career, and the skills overlap heavily with PHP. If that's your lane, read our guide to becoming a remote WordPress developer for themes, block development, WooCommerce and the tools agencies expect.
Legacy and Symfony maintenance gets overlooked, but it suits experienced developers who are comfortable in messy codebases. Ads often say "PHP 7 to 8 migration", "Symfony", "Zend/Laminas" or "CodeIgniter". There's less competition from bootcamp graduates here, because nobody makes YouTube tutorials about rescuing a 2014 CodeIgniter app.
Remote Laravel developer jobs: where most good PHP roles are
If you write PHP and want a remote salary in dollars or euros, Laravel is the framework to be strongest in. Many remote PHP ads on general boards name Laravel as the framework, and Laravel even has its own dedicated job board.
What Laravel job ads expect in late 2026
Laravel ships a major version every year. According to the Laravel 13 release notes, Laravel 13 was released on 17 March 2026 and requires PHP 8.3 or newer. Each Laravel release gets 18 months of bug fixes and two years of security fixes. Laravel 12 receives security fixes until 24 February 2027, and Laravel 11 reached end of life in March 2026.
So if your CV says "Laravel 8", a hiring manager reads that as "hasn't touched Laravel in years", even when it isn't true. Upgrade a personal project to Laravel 12 or 13 and say so.
Skills that come up again and again in remote Laravel ads (as of October 2026):
- Core framework: Eloquent relationships and query performance, form requests and validation, policies and gates, events and listeners, service container basics.
- Queues and background work: Redis queues, Laravel Horizon, scheduled tasks, handling failed jobs. Laravel 13's release notes highlight queue routing and new job attributes such as
#[Tries]and#[Timeout], and knowing these shows you're current. - APIs: REST APIs with API resources, authentication with Sanctum, and JSON:API resources, which became first-party in Laravel 13.
- Front end: one of Livewire (often with Alpine.js and Tailwind, the "TALL" stack) or Inertia with Vue or React. Ads that say "full-stack Laravel" almost always want one of these.
- Testing: Pest or PHPUnit, feature tests that hit real routes, and factories. Remote teams rely on tests because nobody can lean over your desk and check your work.
- Deployment: Laravel Forge, Vapor or Laravel Cloud, Docker, and basic CI with GitHub Actions.
- Databases: MySQL or PostgreSQL, indexes, avoiding N+1 queries. Laravel 13 adds vector search on PostgreSQL with pgvector, which is turning up in AI-flavoured product roles.
You don't need all of these to apply. A mid-level candidate who is solid on Eloquent, queues, testing and one front-end option is competitive.
How to apply for remote Laravel jobs
Laravel hiring managers read applications fast and look for a few specific signals. These tips apply equally to a CV sent to a SaaS company and a proposal sent to a client.
- Put the versions in your headline. "Laravel developer (Laravel 12/13, PHP 8.4, Livewire, Pest)" tells a recruiter in two seconds that you're current. "PHP/Laravel developer" doesn't.
- Lead with outcomes, not the framework. Every Laravel applicant "built REST APIs". Fewer can say they cut a dashboard's load time from 6 seconds to 900ms by fixing N+1 queries and adding Redis caching.
- Link a repository with tests. One clean repo with feature tests, a README and a CI badge beats ten half-finished projects. Reviewers open
tests/before they openapp/. - Show you can work async. Remote Laravel teams write a lot: pull request descriptions, issue comments, short technical write-ups. Link one well-written PR or a blog post about a bug you fixed.
- Say how your hours overlap. For a Berlin-based team in winter, write "I work 9am to 5pm Lagos time, which is the same as CET in winter". For a US team, say which US hours you can cover.
- Expect a take-home task or a live pairing session. Laravel take-homes are usually a small CRUD app with an API, a queue job and tests. Tests and a readable README count as much as the features. Our planned guide to preparing for a take-home coding test covers time-boxing and what reviewers check.
- Don't skip the cover note. Two or three sentences that mention something specific about the company's product beat a generic letter every time.
Example (hypothetical): rewriting a Laravel CV bullet
Weak version:
- Worked on Laravel backend for an e-commerce platform.
Stronger version:
- Moved order confirmation emails and invoice PDFs from synchronous controllers to Redis queues managed by Horizon, cutting checkout response time from about 4 seconds to under 1 second; added Pest feature tests for the checkout flow (Laravel 11 to 12 upgrade included).
The second bullet names the problem, the Laravel tools, the measurable result and the version. Use real figures from your own work only. If you don't know the exact number, describe the change without inventing one.
A portfolio project that works for Laravel roles
If your professional Laravel work is under NDA or on a private Nigerian company repo, build one public project that reflects what remote teams do every day:
- A multi-user app (for example, an invoicing tool for freelancers) with roles and policies.
- A queued job that does something slow, such as generating PDFs or sending emails, with retries.
- A documented API protected by Sanctum.
- Feature tests in Pest, run on GitHub Actions.
- A live deployment with a demo login.
Keep the scope small and finish it. Our planned guide to building a software portfolio that attracts remote employers goes further on presentation.
Where to look for remote PHP and Laravel jobs
Different channels suit different types of PHP work. The table below gives a starting point. Always check the location rules on each individual ad, because none of these channels only lists jobs open to Nigeria.
| Channel | Best for | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| LaraJobs (Laravel job board) | Laravel product roles | Many listings are US-only or tied to a time zone |
| Company job boards (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby) | Salaried roles at funded companies | Location rule usually sits under the job title |
| General remote job boards | Mixed PHP, Laravel, WordPress | Old reposts, unclear eligibility |
| Freelance platforms (Upwork and similar) | WordPress, fixes, short contracts | Platform fees, price competition |
| WorkRemote.ng tech listings | Roles open to people in Nigeria | Still read each ad's requirements |
LaraJobs: useful, but read the location line
LaraJobs describes itself as "the official Laravel job board" and is linked from Laravel's own website. It's the most concentrated source of Laravel roles. But when we checked the LaraJobs remote listings on 27 October 2026, the three active remote listings were two US-only roles and one role tied to the Europe/Berlin time zone. Older listings on the same page included roles marked Remote/USA, Remote (UK), Remote/Cyprus and a few with no restriction stated.
That snapshot is typical of what Nigerian developers run into on good boards. The salaries look attractive ($115,000 to $220,000 in the US-only ads), but they are pay for US residents. Use LaraJobs to see what skills are in demand and to find company names, then check each company's own careers page for roles with wider eligibility.
Company career pages and ATS search strings
Many funded companies post jobs on applicant tracking systems (ATS) such as Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby. Their job pages load as plain web pages, so Google indexes them. Try searches like these:
site:job-boards.greenhouse.io Laravel remotesite:jobs.lever.co PHP remote EMEAsite:jobs.ashbyhq.com Laravel"Laravel" "remote" "anywhere in the world""PHP" "remote" "EMEA" engineer
Open each result and look at the location line under the job title before reading anything else. Our planned guide to finding remote jobs on company career pages explains this method for every role type.
General remote boards and the wider developer boards
General remote job boards and developer aggregators carry plenty of PHP ads, but many are old or reposted. Check the posting date, then click through to the company's own page to apply. Our planned roundup of the best websites for finding remote developer jobs compares the main boards across all stacks.
Freelance platforms for WordPress and short PHP contracts
Freelance marketplaces are where a lot of WordPress, WooCommerce and "fix my PHP site" work lives. It's a reasonable way to build international references, especially early on. The trade-off is price competition and fees, so treat it as a stepping stone towards long contracts or salaried roles, not the end point. If you go this route, read how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria before your first payout.
WorkRemote.ng
WorkRemote.ng lists remote roles open to applicants living in Nigeria. Each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live. You can browse remote tech jobs open to applicants in Nigeria and search for "PHP", "Laravel" or "WordPress". We review listings and aim to publish genuine remote roles open to applicants from Nigeria, but we can't check every detail, and employers decide who they hire.
How to tell whether a remote PHP job is open to you in Nigeria
Read the location line before you read the tech stack. These are the labels you'll see most often and what they usually mean for someone living in Nigeria.
| Label on the ad | Can you apply from Nigeria? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Remote (Worldwide / Anywhere) | Usually yes | Required working hours, contractor or employee |
| Remote (EMEA) | Often yes | Some EMEA ads list specific countries only |
| Remote (Africa) or names Nigeria | Yes | Pay currency and contract type |
| Remote (Europe/Berlin time zone) | Sometimes | Whether they mean time zone or residence |
| Remote (US only, UK, Cyprus) | Usually no | Work authorisation in that country is required |
| Remote, no location stated | Unclear | Ask the recruiter before investing time |
A few points that save time:
- "EMEA" covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, so Nigeria is in it geographically. But some companies only have legal entities or employer-of-record (EOR) arrangements in certain EMEA countries. Look for a country list or a "where we can hire" page. Our planned explainer on what EMEA means in a remote job description goes into detail.
- "Time zone" is not the same as "residence". An ad that wants Europe/Berlin hours may accept you, because Lagos (WAT, UTC+1) is on the same time as Berlin in winter and only one hour behind in summer. An ad that says "must reside in the EU" won't.
- "Worldwide" usually means contractor. Companies hiring anywhere often pay you as an independent contractor or through an EOR such as Deel or Remote. Understand the difference in our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements from Nigeria.
- When in doubt, ask once, politely. "I'm based in Lagos, Nigeria (UTC+1). Is this role open to candidates there?" is a normal question that recruiters answer all the time.
For a fuller checklist, see our planned guide on verifying whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents and the explainer on what "worldwide remote" means when applying from Nigeria.
How much remote PHP developers earn
There's no reliable public dataset on what Nigeria-based PHP developers earn from foreign companies, so be wary of any page that gives you a confident single number. Here's what we can say from sources we checked.
US benchmark, not your likely offer. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for web developers at $92,650 a year (May 2025). At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that's about ₦126 million a year. That figure is what web developers living in the US earn. It is not what a Nigeria-based contractor will usually be offered.
Posted ranges show the gap. The US-only Laravel ads on LaraJobs on 27 October 2026 posted ranges such as $115,000 to $135,000 and $160,000 to $180,000. Those are for US residents. Remote pay for developers living in Nigeria is usually well below US local pay, because many companies set pay by location or hire through lower-cost contractor arrangements.
What moves your number up:
- Seniority and scope. Owning features end to end, mentoring and making architecture decisions pay more than ticket-taking.
- Laravel product work over generic PHP. SaaS companies usually pay more than agencies doing brochure sites.
- Salaried or long-contract roles over gig work. Monthly retainers beat one-off fixes for both pay and stability.
- Companies with location-independent pay bands. Some publish salary bands that don't change by country. These are rare and competitive, but worth targeting.
- English writing and communication. Teams pay for developers who don't need hand-holding across time zones.
For role-level figures in dollars and naira, see our remote backend developer salary guide. Before you accept an offer, check whether the figure is gross or net, monthly or annual, and who pays platform and transfer fees.
Working remotely on PHP from Nigeria: hours, power and payment
Time-zone overlap
Your hours decide which ads are realistic. These figures use the clocks after the UK change on 25 October 2026 and the US change on 1 November 2026:
- UK teams: London is on GMT in winter, so a 9am to 5pm London day is 10am to 6pm in Lagos. In summer (BST) the hours are identical.
- Central Europe: CET is the same time as Lagos in winter and one hour ahead in summer. This is the easiest overlap you'll get.
- US East Coast: 6 hours behind Lagos in winter (EST) and 5 in summer. A 9am Eastern stand-up is 3pm in Lagos in winter.
- US West Coast: 9 hours behind in winter. A 9am to 6pm Pacific day runs from 6pm to 3am in Lagos. Think hard before accepting full Pacific hours.
European and UK companies are often the most natural fit for Nigerian PHP developers on time zone alone.
Power and internet
Deploys, pairing sessions and incident calls don't wait for NEPA. Before you start applying, sort out an inverter or solar setup that keeps your laptop and router alive through outages, plus two internet routes (a primary ISP and a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network). Interviewers notice dropped calls.
Getting paid and tax
Most foreign PHP employers will pay you through a contractor platform, an EOR, direct transfer to a domiciliary account, or a freelance marketplace. Compare options in our guide to getting paid in dollars in Nigeria, and read how tax works for remote workers in Nigeria before your first invoice.
Mistakes PHP developers make when job hunting
- Applying to US-only ads. It feels productive and wastes weeks. Filter by location first.
- Listing outdated versions. "Laravel 5.8, PHP 7.2" on a 2026 CV reads as stale. Upgrade a project and update the CV.
- Calling yourself a "PHP developer" only. Recruiters search for "Laravel", "Symfony", "WordPress" and "full-stack". Use the terms that describe your actual work.
- No tests anywhere. Remote teams rely on automated tests. A portfolio with zero tests tells reviewers you'll need close supervision.
- Ignoring the front end. Many "Laravel developer" ads are full-stack in practice. Basic Livewire or Vue skills widen your options a lot.
- Paying to apply. Real employers don't charge application, training or "equipment" fees. If a "Laravel role" on Telegram asks for money, walk away and read our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
Can Nigerians get remote PHP developer jobs with foreign companies?
Yes, when the company hires in Nigeria or hires contractors worldwide. Plenty of PHP and Laravel ads are restricted to the US, UK or EU, so check the location line on each ad and ask the recruiter if it isn't clear.
Is Laravel or WordPress better for remote jobs?
Laravel usually leads to better-paid salaried product roles, while WordPress has more freelance and agency volume and is easier to enter. Many developers start with WordPress for income and references, then move towards Laravel product teams.
Which Laravel version should I learn for jobs in 2026?
Learn Laravel 13, which requires PHP 8.3 or newer, and be comfortable with Laravel 12, since many production apps still run it. Laravel 11 reached end of life in March 2026, so upgrade experience is also worth showing.
Is PHP still in demand for remote work?
Yes. PHP runs the majority of websites whose server-side language is known, according to W3Techs, so maintenance, upgrades and new Laravel products keep creating work. Demand is strongest for developers who know modern PHP (8.x) and a framework, not plain scripting.
How much can a remote PHP developer in Nigeria earn?
It varies widely by seniority, employer and contract type, and no reliable public dataset covers Nigeria-based remote PHP pay. US figures such as the BLS web developer median of $92,650 a year are benchmarks for US residents, not typical offers to developers living in Nigeria.
Do I need a computer science degree to get a remote Laravel job?
Usually not. Most remote Laravel ads ask for years of experience and specific skills rather than a degree, and a public repository with tests and a deployed app carries a lot of weight. Some larger companies do still list a degree as a requirement, so read each ad.
Where can I find remote Laravel jobs that accept African applicants?
Search ads labelled worldwide, EMEA or Africa on Laravel boards, company job boards (Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby) and WorkRemote.ng's tech listings. Confirm eligibility on the company's own page before applying, because aggregators sometimes drop location details.
What does a typical remote Laravel interview process involve?
Most processes include a recruiter screen, a technical conversation, and either a take-home task or a live pairing session, followed by a final interview with the team. Practise explaining your past Laravel decisions out loud. Our backend developer interview questions cover the common technical rounds.
Key takeaways
- Laravel is where most of the better-paid remote PHP work sits. WordPress and legacy PHP maintenance are real alternative routes.
- Check every ad's location line first: worldwide, EMEA, Africa or Nigeria are good signs, while US-only and UK-only usually rule you out.
- Show current skills on your CV: PHP 8.3+, Laravel 12 or 13, queues, Pest or PHPUnit, and one front-end option such as Livewire or Inertia.
- One finished, tested, deployed Laravel project beats a pile of half-built repositories.
- US salary figures are benchmarks for US residents. Offers to Nigeria-based developers are usually lower, so compare contract type, currency and fees.
- European and UK teams are often the easiest fit on working hours from Nigeria.
Next steps
