What is the Latvia digital nomad visa?
Latvia's version is officially called the long-stay visa for remote work. It is a one-year national (type D) visa for people from outside the EU who keep working for an employer or their own business abroad while living in Latvia.
It is handled by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP). The visa does not give you the right to take a job in Latvia, so all of your work must stay with the foreign employer or clients.
Who can apply for the Latvia digital nomad visa?
You qualify only if your employer, or your own self-employed business, is registered in a member country of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This is the condition that matters most for Nigerian readers.
- Employees must work for an employer registered in an OECD country and must have worked for that employer for at least six months.
- Self-employed people must be registered as self-employed in an OECD country, with that country's tax administration certifying their income for the last six months.
Nigeria is not an OECD member. A Nigerian working for a company in the UK, the US, Canada or Germany, for example, can fit the rule; a Nigerian freelancer registered only in Nigeria, or paid by a Nigerian company, cannot. If you need an OECD-based employer, our remote jobs board is a good place to start.
How much income do you need for the Latvia digital nomad visa?
You must earn at least €4,213 a month gross. The rule is set as 2.5 times Latvia's average monthly gross wage for the previous year, and PMLP's page (updated in February 2026) gives €4,213 based on the latest figure from the Central Statistical Bureau.
Because the figure follows the average wage, it changes each year. An older PMLP page still shows €3,192.50, so ignore that and check the current amount before applying. Employees prove the salary with a letter from the employer; self-employed applicants prove it with a tax administration document covering the last six months.
How long can you stay, and can you renew it?
The visa is issued for one year. PMLP's remote work page does not explain whether it can be renewed or extended, so ask PMLP or the embassy if you want to stay longer.
Since it is a visa and not a residence permit, it is not designed as a route to settling in Latvia.
How much does it cost?
PMLP's fee table lists €90 for a national long-stay (category D) visa, under rates in force since January 2025. Proof that the fee has been paid is one of the required documents.
When you apply through VFS Global, expect a separate service charge on top; VFS publishes its own rates.
What documents do you need?
- A valid passport.
- The completed and signed visa e-form.
- A photo no older than six months.
- Health insurance valid in Latvia and the rest of the Schengen area, with a minimum cover of €42,600 for the insurance period.
- Documents showing where you will live in Latvia.
- Employees: a document from the tax or social insurance authority of the OECD country confirming your current employment, plus an employer letter confirming at least six months with them, your salary and that you can work remotely.
- Self-employed: a document from the OECD country's tax administration certifying your self-employed income for the last six months.
- Proof of payment of the state fee.
How do you apply from Nigeria?
There is no Latvian embassy in Nigeria, and Latvia's Foreign Ministry says other Schengen countries' missions do not issue long-stay visas on Latvia's behalf. Cabinet Regulation No. 725 assigns long-stay visa applications from Nigeria to the Latvian Embassy in Egypt.
- Check that your employer or self-employed registration is in an OECD country and that your gross pay clears the current threshold.
- Collect six months of employment or income evidence from the OECD country's tax or social insurance authority, plus the employer letter.
- Buy health insurance with at least €42,600 cover valid across the Schengen area, and arrange your first address in Latvia.
- Fill in the visa e-form and pay the €90 state fee.
- Book and attend an appointment for the Latvian Embassy in Cairo. The Foreign Ministry says applications to Latvian missions are lodged through VFS Global.
- Collect your visa and travel to Latvia.
Applicants who are already in Latvia legally can send documents to PMLP by post, according to PMLP's own document list. If you would like help preparing the file, Premium membership includes nomad visa assistance.
How long does processing take?
PMLP's remote work page does not give a processing time. Ask VFS or the embassy in Cairo when you book, and leave several weeks for travel to Egypt, document checks and courier time.
Do you pay tax in Latvia on a digital nomad visa?
PMLP's visa pages say nothing about tax, and they do not set out any special tax regime for remote work visa holders. Whether you become tax resident depends on Latvian tax law and how long you stay, so check with Latvia's State Revenue Service (VID) or an adviser.
This is general information, not tax advice.
Can you bring your family?
PMLP's remote work page does not mention family members, so there is no stated dependant route attached to this visa. A spouse or children would need to qualify for their own visa or permit. If moving as a family is the priority, compare Estonia, where a spouse and minor children can apply on the same conditions.
What to know before you move
- Working hours: Latvia uses Eastern European Time, one hour ahead of Lagos in winter (UTC+2) and two hours ahead in summer (UTC+3).
- No local work: remote work visa holders have no right to employment in Latvia, so do not take Latvian clients or jobs.
- Health insurance: the €42,600 minimum is a fixed requirement, so check the cover amount on the policy before you buy.
- Renting: proof of a place to live is part of the application, so sort it before you book your appointment.
