What is the Barbados digital nomad visa?

The Barbados digital nomad visa is the 12-month Barbados Welcome Stamp, a special visa that lets you live on the island for up to a year while you keep working remotely for an employer or clients based outside Barbados. It was announced in June 2020 and is still taking applications.

The application form is run by the Barbados Immigration Department and sits under the Immigration Act. The programme's public information page is published by Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., the island's state tourism agency.

One point to keep in mind for 2026 planning: Barbados Today reported in 2024 that Cabinet had extended the programme until 31 December 2026. We could not find an official notice of any extension beyond that date, so check the official page before you commit to a stay that runs into 2027.

Who can apply for the Barbados digital nomad visa?

Any adult whose work is location-independent can apply, provided the work is for companies or individuals outside Barbados. The official page does not exclude any nationality.

When you apply you declare that you, and anyone travelling with you, will not take a job from, or sell services to, Barbadian citizens, residents or businesses. That rules out freelancing for local clients while you are there. If you do not have a foreign employer or client yet, start with remote jobs that pay in foreign currency.

How much income do you need for the Barbados digital nomad visa?

You need to expect to earn at least US$50,000 over the 12 months of your stay. That works out to roughly US$4,170 a month.

The form asks you to certify that you expect to reach this figure, or that you otherwise have the means to support yourself and any spouse, partner or dependants who come with you. Keep payslips, contracts and bank statements ready in case immigration asks for evidence.

How long can you stay, and can you renew it?

The Welcome Stamp lasts 12 months. You can apply again before it ends: the same online form covers both new applications and renewals.

The Remote Employment Amendment Act passed in 2021 provides for renewing the stamp, according to Barbados Today. Renewal is not automatic, and the overall programme end date above still applies.

How much does it cost?

The fee is US$2,000 for an individual or US$3,000 for a family bundle. You do not pay when you submit the form; the fee falls due within 28 days of your application being approved, and it is not refundable.

Budget separately for flights, health insurance and the first months of rent, which are often paid in advance on the island.

What documents do you need?

The official upload list is short:

  • A passport-sized photograph of the main applicant and of each family member over 18.
  • The bio-data page of the passport for the main applicant and every family member.
  • Proof of relationship (for example marriage and birth certificates) for each family member included.

The form also asks for your employer and a description of your work, passport details, an emergency contact and whether children will attend school. Health insurance is not mentioned on the current official page, but earlier programme guidance required it, as reported by Lonely Planet and other travel guides. Buy a policy that covers you in Barbados for the full year either way.

How do you apply from Nigeria?

Nigerians do not need a separate entry visa, so the whole application is online. Barbados's visa list says Nigerian nationals need no visa and may stay up to six months as visitors.

  1. Confirm your foreign income will reach US$50,000 over the next 12 months and gather proof of it.
  2. Scan your passport bio-data page and take a passport-style photo; do the same for each family member over 18.
  3. Fill in the online form at barbadoswelcomestamp.bb and upload the documents.
  4. Wait for the approval email, then pay the US$2,000 or US$3,000 fee within 28 days.
  5. Book flights. Most routes from Lagos or Abuja connect through another country, so check that country's transit visa rules before you buy.
  6. Before you fly, complete the online immigration and customs form at travelform.gov.bb.

If you would like help with the paperwork, Premium membership includes nomad visa assistance.

How long does processing take?

The official page says applications are typically approved within seven business days. Allow extra time around holidays and if immigration asks for more documents.

Do you pay tax in Barbados on a digital nomad visa?

The official programme page says Welcome Stamp holders are not liable for Barbados income tax on their remote earnings. Purchases on the island carry 17.5% VAT.

Not paying tax in Barbados does not settle your position in Nigeria or in your employer's country. Check how your home country treats income you earn while living abroad. This is general information, not tax advice.

Can you bring your family?

Yes. The family bundle (US$3,000) covers the main applicant and family members you list, with proof of relationship. Each adult in the family needs a photo and passport page on the application.

School is compulsory in Barbados for children aged 5 to 16. The official page says children approved under the Welcome Stamp can attend private schools, or state schools for a small fee, without a separate student visa. The page also mentions a student visa stamp in some cases, so confirm with immigration when you enrol. Pets can come too if you complete the import paperwork and find pet-friendly housing.

What to know before you move

  • Time difference: Barbados is on UTC-4 all year, five hours behind Lagos. A 9am Lagos meeting is 4am in Barbados, while US East Coast clients are on the same time as you in summer and one hour behind in winter.
  • Getting paid: Keep being paid into your existing foreign-currency or international account. The island's currency is the Barbados dollar.
  • Health insurance: Arrange international cover before you travel, whether or not immigration asks to see it.
  • Renting: Long-term rentals are mostly arranged privately or through agents. Visit before signing a year's lease if you can.
  • Timing: If your stay would cross 31 December 2026, check the programme status first, since the last reported extension runs to that date.

If Barbados does not suit you, compare it with the Cayman Islands and Antigua and Barbuda pages, though both of those programmes have now closed.
