What affects your pay
- The exam you teach. A-level, IB and SAT preparation usually commands higher rates than primary or middle-school maths.
- Hours filled. Rates mean little if half your week is empty. Building to 20 paid hours can take months.
- Commission. Preply keeps the full trial-lesson fee, then 33% of later lessons, falling to 18% as your hours grow.
- Direct clients. Families who pay you directly avoid platform commission, but you handle scheduling, payment and the risk of non-payment.
- Reviews and results. Grade improvements and parent reviews let you raise your rate.
- Payment fees. Payoneer, Wise and PayPal withdrawal costs come off what reaches your account.
Negotiating your offer
With direct clients, price per block rather than per lesson: for example, ten GCSE lessons paid upfront, with the price stated in pounds or dollars. It protects you from cancellations and naira swings.

Salaries for related roles
- Online English Tutor
An online English tutor teaches conversation, grammar, exam preparation or business English to learners abroad over video. Nigerians can do it from home on open marketplaces like Preply and italki, but several big platforms only hire people eligible to work in specific countries, and pay on the open ones depends on how well you market yourself.
- Instructional Designer
An instructional designer plans and builds training (e-learning modules, video lessons, workshops, job aids) so that people can actually do something new at work. It is a well-established remote role, and Nigerians get hired from home with a strong portfolio built in tools like Articulate Storyline and Rise, though offshore pay is far below US salaries.

A data analyst pulls numbers out of a company's databases and spreadsheets, works out what they mean and reports it so managers can decide what to do. It is one of the more realistic remote jobs to land from Nigeria, because the work is all on a laptop and employers judge you on SQL, dashboards and a portfolio rather than where you live.
