What affects your pay
Scope. A one-person marketing department and a manager with five reports and agencies have the same title but very different pay.
Company and market. Venture-funded startups and SaaS companies usually pay more than agencies and small businesses. Roles covering Africa expansion sometimes pay well because local knowledge is scarce.
Time zone demands. Roles that need daily overlap with US leadership often pay more than those on European hours, but cost you evenings.
Contract or employment. Employer-of-record roles may include health cover, pension and paid leave. A contract at the same figure is worth less once you cover those yourself.
Negotiating your offer
Ask for the budget range early, and whether it's adjusted for location. Some companies publish one range and quietly offer less for Africa-based hires.
Use your scale: budgets owned, team size and results in dollars. If you've led a team in Nigeria, say how many people and what they delivered.
If base pay is fixed, negotiate a performance bonus tied to agreed targets, paid leave, a home office and power allowance, or a guaranteed six-month review.
