Remote paralegal interview questions and answers
US firms interviewing remote paralegals want to know three things: do you understand US procedure well enough to draft first versions, will you protect deadlines, and will you stay inside the line between support and legal advice. Expect a writing test. These are the questions that come up, with answers from a Nigerian candidate's point of view.

About the role and your experience
Openers that check you understand the job and have done the work.
You're called to the Nigerian Bar. Why do you want a paralegal role?
Why they ask
They want to know you won't be frustrated or overstep.
How to answer
Be honest and positive about the role.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I enjoy the preparation side of law, the drafting and organising, more than appearing in court. I know I can't practise US law, and I'm comfortable working under your attorneys. I want to get very good at US litigation support rather than practise in Nigeria.
Do you speak Spanish?
Why they ask
Many US firms serve Spanish-speaking clients.
How to answer
Be honest; don't overstate.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
No, I speak English, Yoruba and some French. For this role I'd be working with English-speaking clients and the attorneys, which I understand is how your team splits the work.
Technical questions
What you know and how you'd do the work, often with a live task or test.
Walk me through how you calendar a new deadline.
Why they ask
Missed deadlines are the biggest risk a paralegal can create.
How to answer
Explain how you calculate it from the rule, enter it, set reminders and get it checked.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
When an order or a served document comes in, I check the rule for the response period, count the days including the court's rules on weekends and holidays, and enter the deadline in the case management system and the attorney's calendar with reminders at 14, 7 and 2 days. Anything I'm unsure about I confirm with the attorney the same day.
What is the difference between interrogatories, requests for production and requests for admission?
Why they ask
Litigation roles need discovery knowledge.
How to answer
Define each briefly.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
Interrogatories are written questions the other side answers under oath. Requests for production ask for documents or things. Requests for admission ask the other side to admit or deny specific facts, so they don't have to be proved at trial.
How would you put together a settlement demand package for a personal injury case?
Why they ask
Personal injury firms are major remote employers.
How to answer
List what goes in and how you check it.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd gather the police or incident report, photos, all medical records and itemised bills, proof of lost wages and the client's statement. I'd build a treatment timeline and a damages summary, check every bill against its record, and draft the demand letter for the attorney to review and finalise.
How do you e-file a document, and what do you check before you submit?
Why they ask
Filing errors cause rejections and missed deadlines.
How to answer
Mention format, signatures, case number, attachments and confirmation.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I check the court's formatting rules, that the attorney has signed, the case number and caption, exhibits attached in order and correctly labelled, and that it's the final version. After filing, I save the confirmation and the stamped copy to the file and calendar any deadline it triggers.
Have you used Clio, MyCase or a similar system?
Why they ask
They want short onboarding.
How to answer
Say what you used and how you would learn theirs.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
My firm in Abuja used a local case management tool, and I've set up a Clio trial account with a mock matter, tasks and documents to learn it. I learn systems quickly by building a dummy case and running through a full workflow.
What do you know about US immigration petitions like O-1 or EB-2 NIW?
Why they ask
Immigration firms hire internationally.
How to answer
Be accurate about your level.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
O-1 is for people with extraordinary ability, and the petition needs evidence against specific criteria, like awards, publications or high salary. EB-2 NIW is a green card category where the person argues their work is in the US national interest. I haven't prepared them professionally yet, but I've studied the USCIS criteria and drafted practice exhibit lists.
Write a short email to a medical provider requesting records.
Why they ask
Written tests are common.
How to answer
Polite, specific, with authorisation attached and a deadline.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
Subject: Records request for [client], DOB [date]. Please find attached a signed HIPAA authorisation. We request complete medical records and itemised billing for treatment from [date] to present. Please send them to this address within 14 days. Thank you, [name], Paralegal, [firm].
Behavioural questions
Past situations. Answer with a real example: what happened, what you did, what changed.
How do you handle a stressed client who calls every day?
Why they ask
Client communication is a big part of the job.
How to answer
Empathy, clear updates, set expectations.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd give them a regular update slot, say every Friday, so they know when to expect news, and send a short written update even if nothing has changed. Most daily calls stop when the client knows someone is watching their case.
Tell me about a drafting mistake you made and how you handled it.
Why they ask
Everyone errs; they want ownership.
How to answer
Pick a real example, correction and new habit.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I once left the wrong party's name in a motion copied from a template. The attorney caught it in review. I fixed it, and now I search every draft for the names from the template case before sending anything.
Situational questions
Hypotheticals about problems you'd meet in the job.
A client asks you whether they should accept the insurance company's offer. What do you say?
Why they ask
Unauthorised practice of law is a real risk with international staff.
How to answer
Never advise; take the question to the attorney.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd tell them I understand why they're asking, but only the attorney can advise on that, and I'll make sure the attorney calls them today or tomorrow. Then I'd message the attorney with the offer and the client's concerns.
You realise a response deadline is tomorrow and nothing has been drafted. What do you do?
Why they ask
Crisis handling and honesty.
How to answer
Tell the attorney immediately, start drafting, mention options like an extension.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd tell the attorney right away, start the draft from our template and the client's information, and ask whether they want me to prepare a request to opposing counsel for an extension. Afterwards I'd find out why the reminder didn't work.
How do you prioritise when three attorneys give you urgent tasks at once?
Why they ask
Remote paralegals often support several attorneys.
How to answer
Prioritise by deadline and consequence, and tell people.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
Court deadlines first, then anything with a client waiting, then internal tasks. I'd tell each attorney when to expect their work, and if two court deadlines clash, I'd ask the supervising attorney to decide.
Remote work questions
How you'll work from Nigeria with a team elsewhere: hours, power, internet, communication.
Our attorneys work Pacific time. Can you work 8am to 5pm PT?
Why they ask
Hours are the first filter for international hires.
How to answer
Be specific about what that means in Lagos and confirm.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
Yes. That's 4pm to 1am in Lagos for most of the year and 5pm to 2am when US clocks go back. I've set up my day for it: solar backup for the evening and a separate quiet room so calls don't disturb anyone.
How do you keep client information confidential working from home?
Why they ask
Privileged information needs protecting.
How to answer
Device, access, environment and habits.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I work on my own laptop with a password and encryption, use only the firm's systems, never download files to personal storage, and take calls with a headset in a closed room. Nobody else uses my work devices.
Remote interview tips
Prepare for a written test: a demand letter outline, a records request, a client update email or a short discovery response. Practise each in under 20 minutes.
Learn the basic vocabulary of US litigation before the interview: complaint, answer, discovery, deposition, motion, settlement, statute of limitations. Use the words naturally.
Test your call quality on the platform they use, at the time of day the interview will be held. An evening interview in Lagos means busier networks; have your backup connection ready.
Questions people ask
Will a US firm test my writing?
Almost always. Expect a short drafting or email task, sometimes timed during the interview.
Do I need to know American English spelling?
For work documents, yes. US firms expect US spelling and formatting in what you draft for them. Set Word to US English for their files.
How long is the hiring process with legal staffing companies?
Often one to three weeks: an application, an English and skills assessment, an interview with the staffing company and then one with the firm.

Interview questions for roles close to paralegal
- Legal Assistant
A legal assistant keeps a law office running: client intake, calls and emails, scheduling, document management, filings and basic drafting from templates. US law firms and legal staffing companies hire remote legal assistants from any country, Nigeria included, usually on US working hours and without needing a law degree.
- Compliance Analyst
A compliance analyst checks that a company follows the rules it is licensed under, which at fintechs and crypto firms mostly means KYC, anti-money laundering, sanctions screening and transaction monitoring. Remote compliance analyst jobs are open to Nigerians, especially at African fintechs and global crypto exchanges, though senior named roles such as a money laundering reporting officer usually have to sit in the licensed country.
- Executive Assistant
An executive assistant is the right hand of one founder or senior leader, managing their calendar, inbox, travel, meetings and follow-ups with a high level of trust. Remote EA roles are open to Nigerians, mostly at $12,000 to $18,000 a year in 2026 ads, and they usually want a year or more of assistant experience first.
- Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant runs a client's admin from a distance: inbox, calendar, bookings, CRM updates, simple graphics and follow-ups. It is one of the most realistic remote jobs to land from Nigeria without a degree, but honest starting pay in 2026 agency ads is $6 to $7 an hour.
