Remote legal assistant interview questions and answers
Interviews for remote legal assistant roles are practical. Staffing companies usually test your English and typing first, then the firm checks how you would handle a client call, a busy calendar and a mistake. Questions about your hours and home setup come up every time. Here is what to prepare.

About the role and your experience
Openers that check you understand the job and have done the work.
How do you make sure a court date is never missed?
Why they ask
Missed dates harm clients.
How to answer
Two calendars, reminders, confirmation.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
Every date goes into the case system and the attorney's calendar on the day I receive it, with reminders a week and a day before. I check the next week's dates every Friday and send the attorney a list.
Why do you want to work as a legal assistant for a US firm?
Why they ask
Motivation and staying power.
How to answer
Specific and honest.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I worked as a litigation secretary in Lagos for two years and I enjoy keeping a busy legal office organised. US firms have clear systems, and working with one remotely lets me build towards a paralegal role.
Technical questions
What you know and how you'd do the work, often with a live task or test.
How do you organise documents in a case management system?
Why they ask
Attorneys need to find things instantly.
How to answer
Mention consistent naming, folders, dates and saving everything to the matter.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
Everything goes into the matter, never left in email. I name files with the date first, then the document type and party, like 2026-10-14 Medical Records St Mary's, so they sort in order. If the firm has a naming convention, I follow it exactly.
How fast do you type?
Why they ask
Speed and accuracy matter for intake and documents.
How to answer
Give a recent tested number with accuracy.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
About 65 words a minute at 97% accuracy on Typing.com last week. I can send you a screenshot.
Which legal software have you used?
Why they ask
Shorter onboarding.
How to answer
Be honest and show how you learn.

In a Lagos chambers we used Excel and shared folders, so not Clio itself. I've signed up for a Clio trial and built a sample matter with contacts, tasks and documents to learn the layout. I'm comfortable with Outlook, Teams and Dropbox.
Behavioural questions
Past situations. Answer with a real example: what happened, what you did, what changed.
You sent a document to the wrong client by email. What do you do?
Why they ask
Confidentiality breaches must be reported fast.
How to answer
Report immediately, follow the firm's process, never hide it.

I'd tell the attorney immediately, try to recall the email, and follow the firm's process, which usually means asking the recipient to delete it and confirm. Then I'd change how I send documents, such as checking the recipient field twice before attaching anything.
Tell me about a time you handled several urgent tasks at once.
Why they ask
Legal offices get busy without warning.
How to answer
Real example and how you prioritised.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
In my last job, on the morning of a hearing, counsel needed bundles copied, a client was calling about a missing document and the court clerk changed the time. I sorted by deadline: told counsel the new time first, finished the bundles, then called the client back within the hour.
What would you do if you had nothing to do for an hour?
Why they ask
Remote managers want self-starters.
How to answer
Show initiative.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
Check for missing documents on open matters, tidy file names, update the contacts list and ask the attorney if there's anything they've been meaning to hand off.
Situational questions
Hypotheticals about problems you'd meet in the job.
A potential client calls about a car accident. What do you ask them?
Why they ask
Intake is often the first task you will own.
How to answer
Show a structured, kind intake that gathers what the attorney needs.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd take their name and contact details, the date and place of the accident, whether police attended, injuries and treatment so far, insurance details for both sides, and whether they've spoken to an insurer or another lawyer. I'd tell them the attorney will review it and when they'll hear back, and I wouldn't comment on whether they have a case.
A client is crying on the phone and asks if they will win. What do you say?
Why they ask
Empathy and staying inside your role.
How to answer
Acknowledge feelings, don't predict outcomes, pass to the attorney.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd let them finish, tell them I'm sorry they're going through this, and explain that I can't predict the outcome but the attorney can talk it through with them. I'd book a call with the attorney and send a note so the attorney knows the client is anxious.
Two attorneys ask you to book the same client meeting room slot and both say it's urgent. What do you do?
Why they ask
Calendar conflicts are daily.
How to answer
Check priorities, offer options, escalate if needed.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd check whether either is tied to a court date or a client who can only do that time. If neither, I'd offer both the nearest alternative slots and ask them to agree. If they can't, I'd ask the managing attorney.
A client sends documents by WhatsApp. How do you handle that?
Why they ask
Client data must end up in the firm's systems securely.
How to answer
Move it to the system, follow policy, guide the client to the proper channel.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I'd save them to the matter straight away, delete them from my phone if the firm allows WhatsApp at all, and send the client the secure upload link for next time.
Remote work questions
How you'll work from Nigeria with a team elsewhere: hours, power, internet, communication.
What hours can you work?
Why they ask
US hours are a hard requirement.
How to answer
Name the hours in their time zone and Lagos time.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
I can work 8:30 to 5:30 Eastern. That's 2:30pm to 11:30pm in Lagos in winter and 1:30pm to 10:30pm in summer, and I've worked evening shifts in customer support before.
Describe your home office setup.
Why they ask
Phone-heavy roles need good call quality.
How to answer
Specific equipment, power and backup.
Show a sample answerHide the sample answer
A laptop with 8GB RAM, a Jabra headset, a closed room at the back of the house, fibre internet with an Airtel MiFi as backup, and solar that runs everything through the night.
Remote interview tips
Expect an English test, a typing test and sometimes a short written task such as a client email. Practise all three the week before.
Do a mock intake call with a friend playing a client, and time it. Aim to collect everything in under ten minutes while sounding calm.
Schedule the interview for a time your network is stable and test your headset first. For legal assistant roles, how you sound on a call is part of the assessment.
Questions people ask
Is there a test in legal assistant interviews?
Usually an English or grammar test, a typing test and sometimes a short email or intake exercise.
Do I need legal experience to get hired?
It helps, but many 2026 remote ads only preferred it. Strong admin or customer service experience plus good English can be enough.
How long does the hiring process take?
With staffing companies, often one to three weeks from application to offer, including tests and two interviews.

Interview questions for roles close to legal assistant
- Paralegal
A paralegal does legal work under a lawyer's supervision: drafting documents, managing case files and deadlines, preparing filings and handling discovery or records. US law firms hire remote paralegals from Nigeria and other countries, mostly in litigation, personal injury and immigration, but you work under US attorneys and cannot give legal advice, even if you are called to the Nigerian Bar.
- Executive Assistant
An executive assistant is the right hand of one founder or senior leader, managing their calendar, inbox, travel, meetings and follow-ups with a high level of trust. Remote EA roles are open to Nigerians, mostly at $12,000 to $18,000 a year in 2026 ads, and they usually want a year or more of assistant experience first.
- Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant runs a client's admin from a distance: inbox, calendar, bookings, CRM updates, simple graphics and follow-ups. It is one of the most realistic remote jobs to land from Nigeria without a degree, but honest starting pay in 2026 agency ads is $6 to $7 an hour.
- Administrative Assistant
An administrative assistant keeps an office's paperwork, records, scheduling and correspondence in order. Remotely, Nigerians usually do this work for US law firms, clinics and small businesses through staffing agencies, under titles like legal assistant, intake specialist or admin coordinator, at roughly $1,060 to $1,220 a month in 2026 ads.
