Yes, retired professionals in Nigeria can earn extra income remotely, and some of the best-matched work pays for exactly what you spent thirty years learning. The realistic options are paid expert calls, part-time online teaching and tutoring, freelance work in your old profession, and advisory roles for small companies.

Retirement in Nigeria often comes with a gap. The RSA pension or gratuity arrives slowly or smaller than expected, school fees and medical bills keep coming, and full-time work no longer appeals. Remote work can fill part of that gap without a commute to Victoria Island or the Central Business District.

This guide covers which remote jobs fit retired professionals, what they actually pay per hour once you count the real time involved, how this income sits alongside your pension, what equipment you need, and the scams that target people with retirement money.

Quick answer

The remote jobs that suit retired professionals best are expert consultation calls (through networks such as GLG), part-time online lecturing or tutoring, freelance work in your former field (accounting, editing, HR, compliance) and paid advisory roles. Most are contractor arrangements paid in dollars, not salaried jobs. Before you apply, check that the ad accepts Nigeria-based applicants, work out the real hourly rate, and never pay anyone to get the work.

Why remote work suits many retirees, and where it doesn't

Remote work removes the parts of a job that wear older professionals down: traffic, fixed office hours, and office politics you no longer need. You can take on two afternoons a week, stop for three months during a family event, or work only on projects you like.

It is not a fit for everyone, and pretending otherwise wastes your time. Three honest limits:

  • Entry-level remote jobs are crowded. Customer support, data entry and virtual assistant roles get hundreds of applicants, many in their twenties and willing to work night shifts for US clients. Your edge is experience, so aim for work that pays for experience.
  • Most of it is contract work. You'll usually be an independent contractor, with no pension contributions, health cover or leave from the client. That's often fine when you already have a pension, but go in knowing it.
  • The setup costs money upfront. A decent laptop, backup power and two internet connections are part of the job, not optional extras.

If you're between 45 and 55 and still want a full-time career, our planned guide to remote jobs for experienced professionals over 40 is a better fit. This page is for people who want extra income, not a second career.

The best remote jobs for retired professionals

The table sorts the main options by what they need from you. "Nigeria access" describes the typical situation as of October 2026. Always check the individual ad.

Expert network calls

Expert networks connect people who know an industry with investors, consultants and companies who want to understand it. A typical engagement is a one-hour phone or video call in which a client asks how, for example, Nigerian cement distribution works or how a bank handles agent banking compliance.

GLG is one of the best-known networks. According to GLG's expert recruitment page, you build a profile from your work history, sign its terms and conditions, and set your own hourly rate. GLG contacts you when a client project matches your knowledge, and pays you at that rate after the project is complete. The page says its experts span every career stage, including retirement. It also lists advisory work and placements such as board, fractional and expert-witness roles alongside the calls.

There are two things to know before you sign up. First, expert networks forbid sharing confidential or non-public information, so you talk about your experience and general knowledge, not your former employer's secrets. Second, calls come when clients need your knowledge, so the income is irregular. You might get two calls one month and none the next. Treat it as a bonus, not a salary.

Retired professionals from oil and gas, telecoms, banking, power, agriculture, ports, insurance and public regulators tend to suit this best, because foreign investors keep asking how those sectors work in Nigeria.

Part-time online lecturing and tutoring

Retired lecturers and teachers have a direct route into remote work, but the pay varies widely between platforms.

As of 27 October 2026, Remotive is carrying an Adjunct Instructor ad from University of the People, an online, accredited non-profit university. The ad says the role is remote, restricted to Nigeria and on a contract basis, paying $250 per undergraduate course and $300 per graduate course. Courses run for nine weeks, with about 15 hours of work a week. Applicants need a conferred master's or doctorate in a related field (the ad mentions computing subjects). Online teaching experience is preferred but not required. Applications go through the university's careers page on Deel. Check the live ad before applying, because terms and eligibility change.

Example (hypothetical): Mrs Adeyemi, a retired computer science lecturer, takes on one undergraduate course. She earns $250, about ₦340,500 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). Fifteen hours a week for nine weeks is 135 hours, so the effective rate is about $1.85 an hour. If she finds the work meaningful and has time, that may be fine. If she wants money for her time, it isn't.

The point of that example isn't to put you off. It's to show why you should always divide the pay by the real hours before you say yes.

Tutoring marketplaces work differently. Preply's guide to becoming a tutor (updated 15 February 2025) says you need to be over 18, upload a profile photo and a 30-second to 2-minute introduction video, write a description, and verify your identity with a passport or government ID. Profile review takes about five working days. Earnings go into a Preply wallet and can be withdrawn through PayPal, Payoneer or Skrill. Preply keeps the whole fee for your first lesson with each new student, so your first lessons earn you nothing. You set your own rate, and new tutors usually start low to win their first reviews.

Retired English teachers can read our online English tutor career guide for the skills and platforms in more detail, and the planned article on becoming an online tutor from Nigeria covers the tutoring process step by step.

Freelance work in your old profession

This is often the most reliable earner, because you sell a skill clients already pay for. A few examples:

  • Accountants and auditors: month-end bookkeeping, reconciliations and management accounts for small foreign businesses. Pick up Xero or QuickBooks Online if you only used Sage or an in-house system. See our bookkeeper career guide.
  • Editors, journalists and communications staff: editing reports, grant proposals, books and corporate content.
  • HR managers: HR policy writing, job descriptions, interview panels and HR audits for growing startups.
  • Compliance and risk staff from banks: AML and KYC reviews, policy drafting, regulatory training.
  • Engineers and project managers: technical document review, bid preparation and project planning.

Clients find you through LinkedIn, freelance platforms such as Upwork, referrals from former colleagues, and small companies in the African startup scene. The WorkRemote role guides cover the tools and certifications each profession needs.

Advisory and fractional roles

A fractional role means doing part of a senior job (a few days a month as finance lead, HR lead or operations lead) for a company that can't afford a full-time executive. Advisory roles are lighter still: a monthly call and some email support, sometimes paid in equity rather than cash.

These roles rarely appear on job boards. They come through your network: former juniors who now run startups, investors you met, and industry associations. If someone offers you equity only, treat it as a gamble, not income.

Lighter work: proofreading, transcription and surveys

Proofreading, transcription and paid surveys are easy to start and need little preparation, but the pay per hour is usually low and the work is repetitive. They can suit you if you want something to do with spare mornings. They won't make good use of thirty years of professional experience.

How remote income fits with your pension

Remote income and pension income are separate streams, and you should plan them separately.

When you can access your RSA. According to PenCom's FAQ on RSA access, access is only allowed on retirement. If you retire at 50 or older, you can access your RSA straight away. If you retire before 50 on normal terms, you must wait six months and only qualify if you haven't secured another employment. Anyone retiring early should speak to their Pension Fund Administrator (PFA) before taking on regular work, and ask in writing how it affects their access.

Don't let the side income change your pension choices in a hurry. Choosing between programmed withdrawal, an annuity and a lump sum is a long-term decision. Make it on its own merits with your PFA, not because a remote opportunity looks exciting this month.

Tax. Dollar income earned remotely from Nigeria is taxable in Nigeria. Our guide to tax for remote workers under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 explains how it works. If you also receive a pension, ask a tax adviser how the two sources combine for you.

Contractor or employee: what you'll usually be

Most remote work for retirees is contract work. You invoice, the client pays, and you handle your own tax and savings. Some larger companies hire through an employer of record (EOR), which makes you a formal employee with local payslips, but that's uncommon for part-time roles.

Our page on contractor vs EOR employee arrangements explains the difference. The planned guide to contract remote jobs for Nigerian professionals covers longer contracts.

Setting up: equipment, power, internet and time zones

Equipment

You don't need the newest laptop. A machine that runs Zoom or Google Meet smoothly, handles a browser with many tabs and has a working webcam will do. Add:

  • a USB headset with a microphone (clients hear generator noise and ceiling fans through laptop microphones)
  • a quiet corner with a plain wall behind you
  • reading glasses or a second, larger screen if small text tires your eyes

Power and internet

Power cuts don't care that your client is paying $150 for an hour of your knowledge. Before you take paid calls, have:

  • an inverter or solar backup that can run your laptop and router for at least the length of a call
  • two separate internet connections, for example fibre or a 4G router plus a phone hotspot on a different network
  • Starlink, if you live where fibre doesn't reach (check the current price before you buy)

Test your setup with a family member on a video call during an evening power cut. It's better to find the weak point then than during a client call.

Time zones

Nigeria is on West Africa Time (WAT, UTC+1) all year. As of late October 2026:

Client locationDifference from LagosA 3pm client call is
London (GMT, winter)Lagos 1 hour ahead4pm in Lagos
Central Europe (CET, winter)Same time3pm in Lagos
New York (EST, from 1 November)Lagos 6 hours ahead9pm in Lagos
DubaiLagos 3 hours behindNoon in Lagos

European and Middle Eastern clients fit daytime retired life easily. US clients mean evening calls. Decide which you'll accept before you set your calendar, not after.

Presenting decades of experience well

Long experience is your strongest selling point, but presented badly it can look dated.

  • Trim your CV to the last 10 to 15 years in detail. Summarise earlier roles in one line each. A four-page CV listing every posting since 1988 gets skimmed, not read.
  • Lead with outcomes, not titles. "Cut loan processing time from 10 days to 3 across 40 branches" says more than "Deputy General Manager".
  • Update your LinkedIn profile. Use a recent photo, write a headline that states what you now offer ("Retired banking compliance lead | AML advisory and training"), and turn on "open to work" for freelance or consulting.
  • Show you use current tools. Mention Zoom, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, and any cloud accounting or project tools you use.
  • Leave out your date of birth unless an application form requires it.

If you'd rather someone rewrite your CV and LinkedIn profile for remote work, WorkRemote Premium (₦29,999 a month) includes a CV rewrite and LinkedIn optimisation by a person on our team. You can see what changes on the CV review page.

Scams that target retirees

Retirees are targeted because scammers know some of them have a lump sum or a gratuity. Common patterns:

  • "Registration" or "training" fees before you start a job. A real employer or client doesn't charge you to work for them.
  • Investment disguised as a job, for example "manage our forex account" or "process payments through your account", which can drag you into fraud.
  • Cheque or overpayment tricks, where a "client" sends too much money and asks you to refund the difference.
  • Requests for your BVN, NIN, bank login or pension PIN before any contract exists.
  • Telegram and WhatsApp "recruiters" offering easy task-based dollar income.

Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs in full. If someone asks for money or your pension details, stop talking to them.

A 30-day plan to earn your first remote income

  1. Week 1: Pick one route. Choose the option that matches your strongest experience: expert calls, teaching, freelance work in your field, or advisory work. Don't try all four.
  2. Week 1: Sort your setup. Laptop, headset, backup power, a second internet connection, and a dollar-receiving account. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares Payoneer, Grey, Wise and others.
  3. Week 2: Rebuild your CV and LinkedIn profile around outcomes and the services you now offer.
  4. Week 2: Create your profiles. Sign up with one or two expert networks, one tutoring platform or one freelance platform. Set rates you'd be happy to work for.
  5. Week 3: Tell your network. Send short, personal messages to 20 former colleagues, juniors and clients saying what you now offer. This is where most advisory work for retirees comes from.
  6. Week 3 to 4: Apply to matching ads. Check the location rules in each ad, work out the real hourly rate, and apply only where both make sense.
  7. Week 4: Review. Note what got responses and drop what didn't.

Frequently asked questions

Can a retired person in Nigeria work remotely for a foreign company?

Yes, when the company or client accepts people living in Nigeria. Many ads are limited to residents of particular countries, so check the location line in each ad before applying. Most foreign work for retirees is contract or freelance work, not salaried employment.

What is the best remote job for a retired professional with no tech background?

Expert calls and advisory work need the least technical skill: a phone or laptop with Zoom and your knowledge. Online tutoring is next, since platforms provide the lesson tools. Most freelance work needs some comfort with cloud documents, email and video calls, which a few weeks of practice will give you.

Does earning remote income affect my RSA pension?

If you retired at 50 or older, PenCom's FAQ says you can access your RSA straight away. If you retired before 50, access comes six months after retirement and only if you haven't taken up new employment, so speak to your PFA first. Remote income is still taxable in Nigeria.

How much can a retiree earn from remote work?

It depends on the route, and pay varies widely. Expert networks such as GLG let you set your own hourly rate. Per-course teaching can work out to a low hourly rate: the University of the People ad we checked pays $250 for a course that takes about 135 hours. Always divide the pay by the real hours before you accept.

Is it too late to learn remote work tools at 60?

No. Zoom, Google Docs, Microsoft Teams and cloud accounting tools are learnable in days or weeks with practice. Ask a grandchild or a younger colleague for a few practice calls, and do one mock session before your first paid one.

Do I need to register a business to do freelance work?

Not to start. Many freelancers work in their own name and receive payments through Payoneer, Grey or a domiciliary account. If the income grows or clients ask for invoices from a company, registering a business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission becomes worth considering. Our tax guide explains the tax side.

Are part-time remote jobs safer than full-time ones for retirees?

Not inherently. Scams exist at every level. Part-time roles with low commitment are popular with scammers precisely because they sound easy. The rule is the same either way: never pay to get work, and never share your bank login, BVN or pension details with a "recruiter".

Key takeaways

  • The best-matched remote work for retired professionals uses experience: expert calls, teaching, freelance work in your field and advisory roles.
  • Most of it is contract work paid in dollars, so plan your own tax and savings.
  • Always convert pay into a real hourly rate; per-course and per-task work can pay far less than it first appears.
  • PenCom allows immediate RSA access at retirement from age 50; early retirees should check with their PFA before taking regular work.
  • Backup power, two internet connections and a good headset are basic requirements for paid calls.
  • Retirees with lump sums are prime scam targets: never pay to work.

Next steps

Start by choosing the one route that fits your strongest experience, then browse current remote jobs open to applicants in Nigeria. Retired teachers and lecturers can go straight to the teaching job listings. Each listing shows where applicants may live. After a search, you can turn on free email alerts with "Get email updates" so new matching jobs reach you daily.
