A remote Google Ads specialist plans, runs and improves paid campaigns on Google Search, YouTube, Shopping and Performance Max for a company or agency, working from home. Nigerians can get these jobs, but many of the ads you'll find are limited to other regions. Most of the work is finding the roles that accept Nigeria and then proving you can turn an ad budget into leads or sales.
In this guide we explain what the job involves day to day and which job titles to search for. We also show who hires, what the pay looks like (using real job ads and US benchmarks), the hours you'll actually work from Lagos, and how to build proof of results when nobody has trusted you with a budget yet. Every employer named here comes from a job ad we opened in October 2026. Treat them as examples of what the market looks like, not as open vacancies.
Quick answer
Remote Google Ads specialist jobs involve managing Search, Performance Max, Shopping, Display and YouTube campaigns, setting up conversion tracking with GA4 and Google Tag Manager, and reporting results. Nigerians can apply where the ad accepts Nigeria, Africa or worldwide applicants, but many ads are restricted. Employers usually want 2 to 5 years of hands-on experience, measurable results and often US working hours.
What a remote Google Ads specialist actually does
The job is about spending someone else's money well. A business gives you a monthly budget and a goal, such as phone calls for a roofing company, online sales for a fashion store or demo bookings for software. Your job is to get as many of those results as possible for the money.
From the job ads we read in October 2026, the typical weekly work looks like this:
- Building and launching campaigns, then checking them before they go live (ad groups, keywords, ad copy, assets, locations)
- Adding negative keywords so the budget isn't wasted on irrelevant searches
- Setting up and checking conversion tracking, often through Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
- Adjusting bids, budgets and targeting based on cost per lead or return on ad spend
- Running A/B tests on ads and landing pages
- Building reports in Looker Studio and explaining them to clients or managers
A contractor ad from UnoCasa Consulting, posted on behalf of a US home services company, shows how specific this gets. It asks for experience with offline conversion uploads, call tracking with CallRail, and ZIP-code targeting, and it wants the specialist to compare ad spend against jobs the client actually closed (UnoCasa listing on Jobnow.ng, posted June 2026, now closed).
Campaign types you need to know
| Campaign type | What it does | Where it shows up in job ads |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Text ads on Google results | Almost every ad |
| Performance Max | Google's automated, all-channel campaign | Most e-commerce and lead-gen roles |
| Shopping | Product ads from a merchant feed | E-commerce brands |
| Display | Banner ads across websites | Retargeting work |
| Video (YouTube) | Video ads | Larger budgets, brand work |
If you can only master two to start, learn Search and Performance Max. They appear in nearly every ad we checked.
Job titles to search for
Employers rarely agree on one title. If you only search "Google Ads specialist", you'll miss half the market.
| Title | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Google Ads specialist | Mainly Google, often agency or lead-gen work |
| PPC specialist | Pay-per-click across Google and sometimes Microsoft Ads |
| Paid search specialist | Google and Bing search, often in-house |
| Media buyer | Paid ads across Google and Meta, often e-commerce |
| Paid media strategist | More planning and client work, more senior |
| Performance marketing manager | Owns paid acquisition across channels, senior |
Roles mixing Google with Meta are common. If Facebook and Instagram ads are part of your plan, our guide to getting a remote Meta Ads specialist job covers that side. For the wider PPC career, including Microsoft Ads and the full skills path, read the PPC specialist career guide.
Can Nigerians get remote Google Ads jobs?
Yes, but you have to filter hard. Google Ads work is popular with companies that hire contractors offshore, and many of them recruit only from Latin America, the Philippines, Eastern Europe or South Africa, usually to match US hours or because of where their payroll provider operates.
Here is what we found when we checked live ads in October 2026:
| Ad (as checked) | Who can apply | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Lago, PPC Strategist (Google Ads) | Latin America, Philippines, Eastern Europe | Nigeria excluded, pay $1,800 to $2,800 a month |
| Pearl, Remote Google Ads Specialist | Latin America and the Philippines | Nigeria excluded, 3 to 5 years' experience |
| Huzzle, PPC Specialist (Google Ads) | South Africa only | Africa does not always mean Nigeria |
| UCEP, Remote Google Ads Specialist | Nigeria, remote, part-time | Ad Grants experience, closes 21 November 2026 |
On the Africa-focused board Remote4Africa's Google Ads skill page, several October 2026 listings, including a "Mid-Junior PPC Specialist" and a "Paid Media Strategist", listed Nigeria among the eligible countries alongside Egypt, Ethiopia, Argentina and South Africa. The board hides company names on most listings and requires a paid membership to apply to most of them, so read the full ad carefully before paying for anything.
The pattern is clear. Ads that say "Latin America" or "South Africa" are not open to you, however good your CV is. Ads that say "Africa", "EMEA", "worldwide" or name Nigeria are worth your time. Our guide on verifying whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents explains how to read location lines and when to email the recruiter to ask.
Contractor, not employee, is the norm
Most remote Google Ads roles open to Nigerians are contract or freelance arrangements. The Huzzle ad, for example, says the engagement is as an independent contractor. That usually means no paid leave, no pension and invoicing in dollars. Before you sign, read our explainer on contractor versus employee-of-record arrangements.
How much remote Google Ads specialists earn
Pay depends on where the employer recruits from, how much budget you'll manage and whether you can show results. There is no reliable public dataset for Google Ads pay offered to Nigeria-based workers, so we use two reference points and label them clearly.
Offshore contractor range (job ad). Lago's PPC Strategist ad listed $1,800 to $2,800 a month in USD for a full-time, 9am to 5pm Central Time role, checked in October 2026. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), that is about ₦2.45 million to ₦3.81 million a month before tax and transfer fees. The role excluded Nigeria, but it shows what a company hiring offshore Google Ads talent was willing to pay.
US benchmark (not what you'll be offered). The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for market research analysts and marketing specialists, the occupation group that includes search marketing strategists, at $78,760 a year in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). That's about $6,563 a month for US-based workers. Companies hiring from Nigeria almost always pay below US local rates, so use this figure as a ceiling for negotiation, not an expectation.
Many ads, including Pearl's, Huzzle's and UCEP's, don't state pay at all. UCEP describes its role as "flexible, and results-based". When an ad hides the figure, ask early, and ask whether it's hourly, monthly or tied to results.

The hours: what US and UK clients mean for you in Lagos
Most Google Ads contract work we found was for US businesses, and several ads demand overlap with US hours. Lagos is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year with no daylight saving, so your working hours shift when US and UK clocks change.
| Client's hours | In Lagos (summer) | In Lagos (winter) |
|---|---|---|
| 9am to 5pm US Eastern | 2pm to 10pm | 3pm to 11pm |
| 9am to 5pm US Central | 3pm to 11pm | 4pm to midnight |
| 9am to 5pm US Pacific | 5pm to 1am | 6pm to 2am |
| 9am to 5pm UK | 9am to 5pm | 10am to 6pm |
US clocks go back on 1 November 2026, so US-facing roles start an hour later in Lagos from then. A Pacific-hours contract, like the UnoCasa role, means working past midnight from November to March. Price that in before accepting, and plan for power and internet at night: an inverter or solar backup and two internet connections (a MiFi plus a phone hotspot works) matter more on a late shift, when you can't easily go to a co-working space.
Skills and tools employers ask for
The job ads we read asked for almost the same stack. Here it is in order of how often it came up:
- Google Ads interface and Google Ads Editor: building, bulk-editing and auditing accounts
- Conversion tracking: Google Tag Manager, GA4, Google Ads conversion actions, and for lead-gen work, call tracking and offline conversion imports
- Reporting: Looker Studio dashboards and plain-English summaries
- Performance Max and Shopping: merchant feeds and asset groups for e-commerce
- Copywriting for ads: headlines and descriptions that stay within character limits and policy
- Spreadsheets: Google Sheets or Excel for search-term analysis and budget pacing
Two non-technical skills come up again and again: clear written English (Pearl asks for B2 level or higher) and working without supervision. Remote ad managers often run several client accounts alone.
Industry knowledge helps more than people expect
Ads often specify an industry: US home services lead generation, e-commerce, SaaS or nonprofits. If you've run campaigns for one niche, say so in the first line of your application. A Nigerian marketer who has run Google Ads for a Lagos real estate firm can honestly pitch lead-generation experience, even though the client was local.
Google Ads certifications: worth getting, but not enough alone
Google runs its own free-to-access training and certification on Skillshop. As of October 2026, the Skillshop Google Ads page lists five certifications: Search, Display, Measurement, Video and AI-powered Shopping Ads.
According to Google's help page on Google Ads certifications, checked October 2026:
- You need a score of 80% or more to pass
- Each assessment has a 75-minute limit, and the timer can't be paused
- If you fail, or your browser closes mid-exam, you can retake it one day later
- Certifications last one year, and you renew by passing the assessment again
- Assessments are available in 22 languages
Google's help pages list no exam fee, but confirm on Skillshop when you sign up. After passing, you can claim a digital badge and make it public from your Skillshop profile (Skillshop digital badges help). Badges are private by default, so switch the setting before you share the link with an employer.
Be honest about what a certificate proves. It shows you know how the platform works. It doesn't show you can lower a client's cost per lead. Ads like UnoCasa's list certification as "nice to have" and hands-on account experience as required. Get the Search certification first, then spend your energy on real results. Our guide to digital marketing certifications for remote jobs compares other options.
How to get experience when nobody has given you a budget
This is the hardest part for beginners, because Google Ads skills are proven with money spent and results shown. Truly entry-level remote Google Ads roles are rare. Most ads we checked asked for 2 to 5 years. These routes help you build real proof:
- Run ads for a small local business. A Nigerian shop, clinic or school may let you manage a small monthly budget on their own card. Agree the goal in writing (calls, WhatsApp clicks, form fills) and track it properly.
- Work with a nonprofit through Google Ad Grants. Google Ad Grants gives qualifying nonprofits up to $10,000 a month in search ads. The UCEP ad above shows Nigerian charities hire for exactly this skill. Check Google's eligibility rules for the organisation's country before promising anything.
- Audit accounts and write it up. Ask a business owner for read-only access, find wasted spend and missing conversion tracking, and present the fixes. An audit with permission to share (client name hidden) is a strong portfolio piece.
- Join an agency in a junior role. Nigerian digital agencies hire for paid search on-site or hybrid, and a year of multi-client work there counts as agency experience on a foreign application.
- Freelance on small fixed-price tasks. Conversion tracking set-ups and account audits are common small jobs on freelance platforms, and they build reviews.
For each project, keep a before-and-after record: budget, cost per conversion, conversion rate, and what you changed. Our guide to building a digital marketing portfolio without clients shows how to present this.
Example (hypothetical): turning a small project into proof
Chidinma manages ₦150,000 a month in Google Search ads for a physiotherapy clinic in Abuja. She adds call tracking, cuts searches for "free physiotherapy jobs" through negative keywords, and moves budget to the two best-converting keywords. Over three months, she documents cost per booked call falling and calls rising. Her case study shows the account structure, the tracking set-up and the numbers, with the clinic's permission. That one page does more for her application than three certificates.
How to apply for remote Google Ads jobs from Nigeria
- Search by all the titles, not just "Google Ads specialist". Filter out ads restricted to regions that exclude Nigeria.
- Read the location line first, then the hours. If an ad wants full US Pacific overlap, decide honestly whether you can work until 1am or 2am for months.
- Lead with a number. Your CV's top line should be something like "Managed $8,000 a month across 4 lead-gen accounts; reduced cost per lead 22% in 90 days", using only figures you can back up.
- Send a short audit or Loom video when the ad allows it. A five-minute walkthrough of three quick wins on the company's public ads (from the Google Ads Transparency Center) shows skill fast.
- Expect a practical test. Many agencies give an account audit or a campaign build task. Our guide to completing a remote marketing assessment explains how to approach these.
- Prepare for interview questions on tracking and Performance Max. Our PPC specialist interview questions cover the common ones.
What to ask before you accept
- Is this a contract or employment, and through which company?
- Is pay hourly, monthly or tied to results, and in which currency?
- How will you be paid, and who covers transfer fees?
- How many accounts and what total monthly spend will you manage?
- Which hours must you be online, and does that change when US clocks change?

Scams that target Google Ads job seekers
Google Ads work attracts a specific scam: the "client" asks you to fund an ad account, buy a "verified" Google Ads account, or pay for training before you start. A real employer pays for its own ad spend through its own billing. You never fund a client's campaigns from your pocket.
Other red flags:
- Recruiters who only use Telegram or WhatsApp and have no company website or careers page
- Pay that's far above the ranges in comparable ads for the same experience level
- Requests for your BVN, NIN or bank login before a signed contract
- "Admin access" requests to your own Google account rather than invitations to theirs
A legitimate employer invites your email to their Google Ads account or manager account (MCC). Read our full guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria before you reply to unsolicited offers.
Where a Google Ads career goes next
Google Ads is a good base because the skills carry over. The usual route is Google Ads specialist, then senior PPC or paid media manager, then performance marketing manager, where you own budgets across Google, Meta and other channels. Some specialists move into conversion rate optimisation or marketing analytics, both of which rely on the same tracking skills. If pay is your main driver, our guide to high-paying remote jobs in digital marketing compares those paths.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Nigerian work remotely as a Google Ads specialist for a US company?
Yes, if the job ad or client accepts Nigeria-based applicants. Many US-facing ads in October 2026 recruited only from Latin America or the Philippines, so check the location line, and expect to work US hours, which can run late into the night in Lagos.
Is the Google Ads certification free?
Google's help pages list no exam fee, and you take the training and exams on Skillshop. Each certification lasts one year, needs 80% to pass and is renewed by retaking the assessment. Confirm current terms on Skillshop when you register.
How much does a remote Google Ads specialist earn?
It varies widely. One offshore Google Ads role checked in October 2026 paid $1,800 to $2,800 a month (about ₦2.45 million to ₦3.81 million at ₦1,362 to $1, 23 October 2026). The US median for the wider marketing specialist group was $78,760 a year in May 2025, which Nigeria-based workers should treat as a ceiling, not an expectation.
Can I get a Google Ads job with no experience?
Rarely, for remote roles. Most ads ask for 2 to 5 years of hands-on account management. The realistic route is to manage small real budgets for local businesses or nonprofits, document results, and then apply to junior or agency roles.
What is the difference between a Google Ads specialist and a PPC specialist?
A Google Ads specialist works mainly in Google's platform. A PPC specialist manages pay-per-click ads that may also include Microsoft Ads and sometimes social platforms. In practice, employers use the titles interchangeably, so search for both.
Do I need my own money to practise Google Ads?
No. Running a live campaign requires a payment method, but you can practise on a business's or nonprofit's account using their budget, with written permission. Never pay a "client" or "employer" to fund ads; that's a common scam.
Is Performance Max replacing Google Ads specialists?
No. Performance Max automates bidding and placement, but the ads we checked still need specialists to set up conversion tracking, feed quality data, structure assets and judge lead quality. The job is shifting from manual bidding towards tracking and strategy.
Key takeaways
- Remote Google Ads specialists manage Search, Performance Max, Shopping, Display and YouTube campaigns, plus conversion tracking and reporting.

- Most roles open to Nigerians are contract work, often on US hours that run late into the night in Lagos.
- Pay varies widely; one offshore ad paid $1,800 to $2,800 a month, and US medians are a ceiling, not a benchmark.
- Skillshop certifications are worth having, but documented results on real budgets matter more.
- Never pay to fund a client's ad account or to get a job.
