Group afro americans working together

To get a remote payments operations job, you need to show an employer that you can keep money moving correctly. That means reconciling transactions, handling chargebacks and refunds, chasing failed payouts and spotting problems before customers do. Most of these roles go to people with at least a year of payments, banking, fintech support or reconciliation experience. A lot of Nigerian bank and fintech staff already have that experience and just describe it badly on their CVs.

The harder part is location. Many listings that say "remote" are open only to people in one country or region. This guide covers what payments operations teams actually do and the skills and tools employers name in their ads. It also shows how to read location rules from Nigeria, what live ads paid as of October 2026, and a step-by-step plan to get hired. It ends with the scam you must avoid: fake "payment agent" jobs that turn you into a money mule.

Quick answer

A remote payments operations job means monitoring and fixing how money flows through a company. The work covers card payments, bank transfers, mobile money, refunds, chargebacks, settlements and payouts. Employers usually want one to two or more years of related experience, strong Excel, a clear understanding of chargebacks and reconciliation, and good written English. Nigerians can apply to roles open to Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide. Check the location line on every ad before you apply.

What a payments operations job involves

Payments operations (often shortened to "payments ops" or "PayOps") is the team that makes sure every payment a company sends or receives arrives, gets recorded correctly and gets fixed when it doesn't. Product teams build the checkout. Payments ops keeps it working every day.

Typical daily tasks include:

  • Monitoring transaction success rates and failed payments across payment service providers (PSPs), banks and card networks
  • Reconciling what the company's records say against what the bank, processor or mobile money operator actually settled
  • Handling chargebacks: collecting evidence, writing dispute responses and tracking deadlines
  • Processing refunds and resolving stuck or duplicated transactions
  • Running and checking payouts to merchants, sellers, contractors or employees
  • Escalating processor outages and working with engineering, finance, risk and support teams
  • Writing reports and standard operating procedures (SOPs)

Live ads opened in October 2026 show how this varies. FastSpring's Payment Operations Specialist ad, as listed on Rat Race Rebellion, focuses on managing the end-to-end chargeback process, tracking payment metrics and investigating processor alerts. A CRM and Payment Gateway Operations Analyst ad posted for a Nigeria-based remote role covers monitoring gateways, tracking recurring payments and failures, and overseeing refunds, chargebacks and settlements.

Payments ops roles appear under several names. Search for all of them:

How payments ops differs from nearby roles

Payments ops sits close to compliance and banking work, but it isn't the same job. KYC analysts check who customers are (see remote KYC analyst jobs). AML analysts look for money laundering patterns (remote anti-money laundering analyst jobs). Bank back-office roles are covered in remote banking operations jobs. Payments ops can overlap with fraud work, especially on chargebacks, so the fraud analyst career guide is useful background.

Can you get a remote payments operations job from Nigeria?

Yes, when the employer accepts applicants living in Nigeria. Many payments ops ads do not, because the work often touches regulated money flows, and some companies only hire where they have a legal entity.

Here is how location rules looked on real payments ads opened in October 2026:

Ad (as of October 2026)Location shownOpen to someone in Nigeria?
Sporty Group, Operations Manager, PaymentsEMEA, remote-firstLikely, since Nigeria is in EMEA; confirm on the ad
CRM and Payment Gateway Operations Analyst (via a Nigerian recruiter)Nigeria, remote, EST hoursYes
pawapay, Finance and Reconciliations AccountantKenya or TanzaniaNo, applicants must be based there
FastSpring, Payment Operations SpecialistNot stated on the listing we openedCheck the application page

The pawapay example shows that "remote" and "Africa" together still don't mean Nigeria. pawapay's careers page describes a remote team with members in Europe, the UK, Africa and Asia, and core hours aligned to African and European time zones. Its Finance and Reconciliations Accountant ad still asks whether you are based in Kenya or Tanzania and have the right to work there. Its job board listed four open roles on 27 October 2026, all tied to specific African countries other than Nigeria.

The Sporty Group Operations Manager, Payments ad lists "EMEA" and calls the company remote-first. EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) usually includes Nigeria, but some companies quietly exclude certain countries. Our guide on what EMEA means in a remote job description explains how to check.

Four types of "remote" you will see

  1. Remote within one country (such as "Remote, US"): not open to you unless you already have the right to work there.
  2. Remote within a region (EMEA, Africa, "CET plus or minus 3 hours"): often open to Nigeria. Confirm on the ad.
  3. Remote, named countries (such as "Kenya, Tanzania"): open only to those countries.
  4. Worldwide or anywhere: open, though some employers still exclude countries where their payroll provider doesn't operate.

If you get an offer, find out whether you'd be a contractor or an employee through an employer of record (EOR), since this affects your benefits and tax. Our guide to contractor versus EOR employment in Nigeria covers the differences.

Skills and experience employers ask for

Payments ops hires people who can find out why numbers don't match. In the ads we opened, the same requirements came up again and again.

Experience

  • FastSpring's ad asks for at least one year of experience and knowledge of card payments and chargebacks.
  • pawapay's reconciliation role asks for two to four years of hands-on accounting or finance experience, including balance sheet reconciliations. It names fintech, payments, banking or audit experience as an advantage.
  • Sporty's manager role asks for advanced knowledge of global payment systems, plus fraud, risk, KYC and team leadership experience.

Truly entry-level payments ops jobs exist but are rare. The usual route is to start in a nearby job and move across.

Technical skills

  • Excel or Google Sheets at a working level: XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, pivot tables, conditional formatting and reconciliation formulas. pawapay names lookups, reconciliation formulas and pivot tables directly.
  • SQL basics: the Nigerian gateway analyst ad lists SQL as an advantage. Being able to write a SELECT with a JOIN and a GROUP BY is enough to stand out at junior level.
  • Payments knowledge: the card payment lifecycle (authorisation, capture, clearing, settlement), chargeback stages and reason codes, refunds versus reversals, and rails such as ACH (US bank transfers), SEPA (euro transfers), SWIFT (international wires) and mobile money.
  • Tools: payment gateway dashboards, CRM or billing systems, accounting software such as Xero, ticketing tools such as Zendesk or Jira, and reporting tools such as Tableau or Looker.

Soft skills that matter in remote payments work

  • Written English that is precise. A dispute response or incident report full of vague wording costs money.
  • Careful attention to detail. A single wrong digit in a payout file is a real loss.
  • Comfort working alone across time zones and writing clear handover notes.

Routes into payments ops that suit Nigerian backgrounds

Nigeria's banking and fintech sector produces a lot of payments experience that transfers well to foreign companies. You may already have it.

Your current or past roleWhat carries overWhat to add
Bank e-business, card services or settlement unitReconciliation, card disputes, failed transfer resolutionCard scheme terms in English, SQL basics
Fintech customer supportPayment complaints, refunds, escalationsReconciliation practice, reporting
Accountant or accounts receivable officerLedger matching, month-end closeChargebacks, PSP knowledge
Fraud or risk analystTransaction monitoring, investigationsSettlement and payout processes
POS or agent banking operationsTerminal issues, settlement disputesInternational rails (ACH, SEPA)

If you're coming from accounting, the accounts receivable specialist career guide covers the reconciliation skills that overlap. If you're coming from support, the customer support specialist career guide shows how support teams hand payment issues over to ops.

Example (hypothetical): Amaka spent three years in a Lagos bank's dispute resolution unit handling failed NIP transfers and ATM disputes. On her CV she described this as "handled customer complaints". A payments ops recruiter skimming that line sees a customer service officer. Rewritten as "Investigated and resolved failed interbank transfers and card disputes, reconciling switch and core banking records", the same work reads as payments ops experience.

How much remote payments operations jobs pay

Pay varies a lot by employer location, seniority and whether the company pays by local market or one global band. Few payments ops ads publish a salary. Here are the published figures we found, as of October 2026:

AdPay as publishedSource type
Nigeria-based remote gateway operations analyst₦1,000,000 to ₦1,500,000 a monthRange in job ad
FastSpring Payment Operations Specialist$63,570 a yearFigure on a job listing site
Sporty Operations Manager, PaymentsNot disclosed (salary plus quarterly bonus)Job ad

At the house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026), the Nigerian ad works out at roughly $730 to $1,100 a month.

The FastSpring figure works out to about $5,300 a month. Treat it as a benchmark for a US market listing, not as what a Nigeria-based worker would be offered. Companies that hire from Nigeria often pay less than US local rates, especially for entry-level roles. Senior roles at pan-African or global fintechs tend to pay more, but we found no published band to quote.

Things that push your offer up:

  • Experience with international card schemes and chargebacks, not only local transfers
  • SQL and reporting skills on top of operations work
  • Working hours that overlap with Europe or the US
  • Fluent French alongside English, for companies covering francophone Africa

Step-by-step plan to get hired

  1. List your payments evidence. Write down every task you've done that touches money moving: reconciliations, disputes, refunds, settlement reports, payout checks. Put numbers on it where you honestly can (volume handled, turnaround time, errors cut).
  2. Fill the gaps. If you've never touched chargebacks, learn the lifecycle and reason codes from Visa's and Mastercard's public merchant resources. If your Excel is basic, practise lookups and pivot tables until reconciling two 5,000-row files is routine.
  3. Build a small portfolio (see the next section). Two or three pieces are enough.
  4. Rewrite your CV for payments ops. Lead with a one-line summary such as "Payments operations analyst with three years reconciling card and transfer settlements". Use the job titles from the table above as keywords. Our guide to writing a CV for international remote jobs covers format.
  5. Search the right way. Use all the title variations, and add the payments companies and marketplaces you know to a list of careers pages to check weekly. Filter by location before you read the full description.
  6. Check eligibility first. Read the location line, then the application questions. If the form asks "Are you based in X?" and you aren't, move on.
  7. Prepare for a practical test. Many ops roles send an Excel reconciliation exercise or a written scenario. Practise under time pressure.
  8. Ask about the arrangement at offer stage. Confirm whether you'd be a contractor or an EOR employee, your working hours, your currency and how you'll be paid.

Example CV bullet points (hypothetical)

  • Reconciled daily card settlements across two acquirers against internal ledger records, clearing unmatched items within 48 hours
  • Prepared chargeback evidence packs and tracked dispute deadlines in a shared Google Sheet used by finance and support
  • Wrote an SOP for handling duplicated transfers, adopted by a five-person operations team
  • Built a pivot-table report on failed transaction rates by bank, shared each Monday with the product team

Build a portfolio without a payments job

Hiring managers in payments ops rarely ask for a portfolio, which is why one works in your favour. Keep it short and put it in a Google Drive folder or on Notion, with a link on your CV.

  • A reconciliation exercise: create two dummy datasets (for example, "internal orders" and "processor settlement report") with planted mismatches such as duplicates, missing items, currency differences and timing gaps. Reconcile them in Excel and write a one-page summary of what you found and why.
  • A chargeback response: pick a common reason code such as "item not received" and write a sample evidence pack for a made-up online store. Label it clearly as an exercise.
  • An SOP or incident note: document how you'd handle a PSP outage. Who gets told, what gets paused, how customers are informed and how you'd confirm recovery.
  • A small SQL query file: if you're learning SQL, add three or four queries against a sample transactions table.

Never use real customer data from a current or former employer. That breaks confidentiality and, under Nigerian data protection rules, can expose you personally.

Certifications: useful but not required

None of the ads we opened required a payments certification. Accounting qualifications (ACCA, ICAN, CPA) were listed as an advantage for the reconciliation-heavy role at pawapay.

If you want a payments-specific credential, the Electronic Transactions Association's Certified Payments Professional (ETA CPP) is one recognised option. As of October 2026, it costs $500 for ETA members and $650 for non-members, including a non-refundable $125 application fee. It requires at least one year of industry experience plus a school diploma or degree, or three years of industry experience. The exam is taken with live online proctoring in quarterly windows. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), the non-member fee is about ₦885,000. It's US-focused, so it is worth more for roles at US payment companies than for African fintechs. Get your first payments role before you spend this money.

Working hours, power and internet

Payments don't stop at 5pm, and some roles involve shift or on-call work. Check the hours before you accept.

  • European and EMEA roles are the easiest fit. Central European Time is the same as Lagos in winter and one hour ahead in summer.
  • US roles are harder. The Nigerian gateway analyst ad requires work on US Eastern time. A 9am to 5pm Eastern shift runs 2pm to 10pm in Lagos until 1 November 2026, then 3pm to 11pm in Lagos once the US moves to EST.
  • Pan-African companies such as pawapay align core hours across African and European time zones.

Payout runs and settlement cut-offs have fixed times. A power cut at the wrong moment is a real business problem, not a small inconvenience. Have an inverter or solar backup that lasts a full shift, and two internet connections (for example, a fixed line or Starlink plus a MiFi from a different network).

The scam to avoid: fake "payment agent" jobs

Real payments ops work happens inside company systems. You never receive company money into your personal account. Fraudsters advertise "payment processing agent", "remote payment officer" or "funds transfer assistant" jobs that ask you to receive money into your personal bank account or crypto wallet and send it on, keeping a commission. That is money muling. It can get your accounts frozen and expose you to criminal investigation, even if you didn't know where the money came from.

Walk away if a "payments job" involves any of the following:

  • Using your own bank account, BVN or wallet to move other people's money
  • Buying gift cards or crypto on someone's behalf
  • A recruiter who only talks on Telegram or WhatsApp and has no company email or careers page
  • A fee for training, onboarding or "account activation"

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a remote payments operations job with no experience?

It's possible but uncommon. Most ads we opened asked for at least one year of payments, finance or related experience. The realistic route is to start in fintech customer support, bank operations or accounts receivable, then move into payments ops after six to twelve months.

Do I need a finance or accounting degree?

Not always. FastSpring's listing asked for experience and payments knowledge rather than a specific degree, while pawapay's reconciliation role asked for a degree in accounting, finance or commerce. Reconciliation-heavy roles lean towards accounting graduates. Chargeback and dispute roles care more about experience.

What is the difference between payments operations and payment processing?

Payment processing is the technical act of moving a transaction through a gateway, acquirer and card network. Payments operations is the team that monitors that processing, fixes failures, reconciles results and handles disputes. You'd usually work for a company that uses processors, or for a processor itself.

Which Nigerian work experience counts as payments experience?

Bank roles in e-business, card services, settlement, reconciliation or dispute resolution count, as do fintech support roles that handle failed transactions and POS or agent banking operations. Describe the payments part of the job explicitly on your CV, using terms like settlement, reconciliation, chargeback and refund.

How do I know if a payments ops job accepts Nigerian applicants?

Read the location line and the application form questions. If the ad says "Nigeria", "Africa", "EMEA" or "worldwide", apply after confirming there are no excluded countries. If it names other countries or asks about the right to work elsewhere, it's not open to you.

Is the ETA CPP certification worth it for Nigerians?

It's optional. As of October 2026 it costs $500 to $650 and needs at least one year of industry experience, so it suits people already in payments who are aiming at US payment companies. Most employers we saw cared more about hands-on reconciliation and chargeback experience.

Are payments operations jobs full-time or contract?

Both exist. FastSpring's listing was full-time, while pawapay's reconciliation role was a six-month fixed-term contract. Ask whether a contract can be extended, and whether you'd be paid as a contractor or through an EOR.

Key takeaways

  • Payments operations means monitoring, reconciling and fixing money flows: chargebacks, refunds, settlements, payouts and failed transactions.
  • Most remote payments ops roles want one to two or more years of related experience. Nigerian bank, fintech support and accounting work often qualifies if you describe it properly.
  • "Remote" doesn't mean open to Nigeria. Check the location line and application questions, because even Africa-focused companies restrict some roles to specific countries.
  • Published pay ranged from ₦1,000,000 to ₦1,500,000 a month in a Nigeria-based ad to $63,570 a year on a US listing, as of October 2026. Treat US figures as benchmarks.
  • Strong Excel, basic SQL, chargeback knowledge and precise written English are what employers asked for most.
  • Any "payments job" that moves money through your personal account is a money-mule scam.
