The best remote teaching jobs for Nigerians are online English tutoring, online maths tutoring (especially for UK and US primary pupils), Nigerian-language tutoring for families abroad, exam-prep tutoring and behind-the-scenes education work such as instructional design. They are the best because they're open to people living in Nigeria and pay in foreign currency. Many well-known platforms aren't open to you: some only accept tutors who live in the US, the UK or a short list of other countries.

This guide is for teachers, graduates and subject experts who want to teach from home. We compare the main remote teaching roles side by side. We show which platforms we checked in October 2026 that accept Nigeria-based tutors, which ones don't, and what the pay looks like in naira. We also cover what US and UK lesson times mean on a Lagos clock, and how to tell a real tutoring vacancy from an aggregator listing that only looks open to you.

Quick answer

Nigerians can teach remotely as online English or maths tutors on marketplaces like Preply, as tutors for companies like Brighterly that hire internationally, as Nigerian-language tutors for diaspora families, and as instructional designers. As of October 2026, Cambly lists $0.17 a minute (about $10.20 an hour). Outschool and Tutor.com require residence in countries such as the US, Canada or the UK, so they are closed to Nigeria-based tutors.

How we chose these remote teaching jobs

We picked each role below against four tests:

  1. Open from Nigeria. At least one platform or live job ad we opened in October 2026 accepts applicants living in Nigeria, or doesn't exclude them.
  2. Paid in foreign currency or at a rate worth your time. Dollar or pound pay beats naira for most readers, though we note local edtech roles too.
  3. A realistic entry route. You can start with a degree, NCE or subject knowledge plus a good profile video. You don't need a foreign teaching licence.
  4. Manageable hours from WAT. The lesson times have to work from Nigeria, which is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year.

This is not a ranking of every education job. It's a shortlist of roles a Nigeria-based teacher can realistically get, with the limits stated honestly.

Online English tutor

Online English tutoring is the easiest teaching job for most Nigerians to start. On marketplaces you build a profile, record a short video and set your availability, and students book you. Preply's tutor page says no specific certificate or teaching experience is needed. Cambly's tutor page says the same about degrees, certificates and experience.

The catch is competition and price. Thousands of tutors from every country compete on the same marketplace. Your profile video, reviews and a clear niche (business English, IELTS speaking practice, English for nurses relocating abroad) matter more than your certificate. Our online English tutor career guide covers skills, tools and a step-by-step path, and the online English tutor salary guide shows pay in dollars and naira.

Online maths tutor

Maths tutoring often pays better than general English conversation, because parents pay for results and fewer tutors can teach it well. The strongest demand we saw was for primary and middle-school maths (US grades K to 8 and UK Key Stages 1 to 3).

For example, Brighterly's standing Online Math Tutor ad on Recruitee (checked October 2026) asks for:

  • C1-level English or better, with a "clear, neutral accent"
  • at least six months' experience teaching children
  • strong knowledge of K to 8 maths
  • at least 20 hours a week, with the form asking about availability from 4pm to 8pm New York time.

The application form has an "International" country option. Its exclusion list (Russia, Crimea, Cuba, Lebanon, Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Myanmar, Yemen and Pakistan) does not include Nigeria. The ad doesn't state pay, so ask before you commit. See the online maths tutor career guide and the online maths tutor salary page for more.

Nigerian-language tutor

Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa tutoring is a niche where being Nigerian helps you. Diaspora parents in the UK, US and Canada want their children to speak the family language, and adult learners include people with Nigerian partners. Aggregator listings in October 2026 included at least one online Yoruba, Igbo and French tutor role marked as open to remote applicants, but treat any such listing as a lead and confirm it on the employer's own page.

You'll usually find this work through language marketplaces, Nigerian community schools abroad that run weekend online classes, and direct clients from church, mosque and alumni networks in the diaspora. Rates depend on your materials. A structured course with worksheets, audio and progress reports is easier to sell than "conversation practice".

Exam-prep tutor

Exam preparation (SAT, IGCSE, IB, A-level and university entrance tests) suits strong subject specialists. Students pay for a specific outcome, so you need a track record, which for many Nigerians starts with local WAEC, NECO or JAMB results you can describe honestly. Many international exam-prep agencies want proof of your own grades in the subject, a short teaching demo and availability in the student's evenings.

Science and coding tutor

Physics, chemistry, biology and coding tutoring follow the same pattern as maths: higher rates than conversation English, but narrower demand. We cover these in separate guides on remote science tutoring jobs and remote coding instructor jobs for beginners.

Instructional designer and curriculum developer

Not every remote teaching job involves live lessons. An instructional designer turns training material into online courses for companies, universities and course platforms, using tools like Articulate Rise, Storyline or a learning management system (LMS). Experienced teachers already know lesson planning and assessment, which is most of the job.

These roles are salaried or long-term contracts more often than tutoring is, and they don't depend on evening lesson slots. See the instructional designer career guide and the curriculum developer career guide. If you'd rather package what you know into your own course, read our guide to remote online course creator jobs.

Which teaching platforms accept tutors living in Nigeria

Can Nigerians teach on any online tutoring platform? No. The table below covers platforms whose own pages we opened in October 2026. Policies change, so check the official page before you apply.

PlatformOpen to Nigeria residents? What the official page says
PreplyNo country restriction statedNo certificate or experience needed; pays out by PayPal, Payoneer, Skrill or Wise
CamblyNo country list statedNo degree or certificate needed; new sign-ups temporarily limited
Brighterly (maths)Yes, "International" option; Nigeria not excludedSix months' teaching children; 20+ hours a week
OutschoolNoTeachers must live at least six months a year in a supported country
Tutor.comNoMust live in the US and hold a Social Security Number

Preply

Preply's tutor page describes the sign-up steps: basic details, a headshot, a description of your strengths, a video of up to two minutes and your availability. Profiles are reviewed within three business days. You need a laptop or desktop, a webcam, a microphone and stable internet.

The commission is the part to understand before you set your price. Preply keeps 100% of the trial lesson with each new student. After that it keeps 33% of each lesson, falling to 18% as you teach more hours on the platform (as of October 2026).

Cambly

Cambly's tutor page lists $0.17 a minute (about $10.20 an hour) for adult lessons and $0.20 a minute (about $12 an hour) on Cambly Kids, with weekly pay, as of October 2026. It also says new tutor sign-ups are temporarily limited and profiles may take longer to process. You may wait, so don't make Cambly your only application.

Outschool and Tutor.com: closed to Nigeria-based tutors

Outschool's background-check article says teachers must be full-time residents (at least six months a year) of a supported country. In October 2026 the supported countries were the US, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the UK. Nigeria is not on that list, so a Nigeria-based teacher can't pass the check.

Tutor.com's applicant FAQ says applicants must currently live in the US and have a valid Social Security Number. If you see a "Tutor.com hiring Nigerians" post on social media, it isn't coming from Tutor.com's own rules. For more on why some remote jobs shut out Nigerians, read why some remote jobs are not available to Nigerians.

italki and other language marketplaces

italki also recruits language teachers. We couldn't open its current teacher requirements page in October 2026, so check the requirements, fees and payout options directly on italki's teacher application page before applying.

How much remote teaching pays in naira

Remote teaching pay for Nigerians usually comes as a per-minute rate, an hourly rate you set yourself, or a fixed rate per lesson from a tutoring company. The figures below are worked examples. They are not market averages.

Example (hypothetical): You tutor on Cambly at the listed $0.17 a minute and spend 20 hours a week in lessons. That is $10.20 an hour, about ₦13,900 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). Twenty hours a week for a month (about 4.3 weeks) comes to roughly $877, or about ₦1,194,000, before any transfer fees. On per-minute platforms you're typically paid for time in lessons, not time waiting for bookings, so read the platform's terms on this.

Example (hypothetical): You set a $15 lesson rate on Preply. Your first lesson with each new student pays nothing, because Preply keeps 100% of trial lessons. At 33% commission, each later lesson pays you about $10.05 (about ₦13,700). Once your commission falls to 18%, the same lesson pays about $12.30 (about ₦16,750).

Scenario (hypothetical)Your share per hourIn naira (₦1,362 to $1)
Cambly adult lessons, listed rate$10.20about ₦13,900
Preply, $15 rate at 33% commission$10.05about ₦13,700
Preply, $15 rate at 18% commission$12.30about ₦16,750

Be careful with salary figures on aggregator pages. One aggregator we opened shows a general "average salary" for remote tutor jobs in the tens of thousands of dollars a year. That figure isn't tied to any listing and doesn't describe what a Nigeria-based tutor is offered. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually well below US local pay. For a fuller look at dollar-paying tutoring, read our guide to remote tutoring jobs that pay in dollars.

Time zones: when you'll actually be teaching

Your students' after-school hours become your evenings or nights in Nigeria. Plan for this before you accept a schedule.

Students inTheir slotLagos time now (to 31 Oct)Lagos time from 1 November 2026
UK4pm to 7pm5pm to 8pm5pm to 8pm
US East (New York)4pm to 8pm9pm to 1am10pm to 2am
US West (Los Angeles)4pm to 8pm12am to 4am1am to 5am

UK clocks went back on 25 October 2026, so Lagos is now one hour ahead of London (in British summer time, the two are the same). US Eastern clocks go back on 1 November 2026, when New York moves from five to six hours behind Lagos. The Brighterly slot of 4pm to 8pm New York time means teaching from 10pm to 2am in Lagos through the winter.

UK pupils are the easiest fit for most Nigerian tutors. Adult English learners in Asia and Europe can also suit Nigerian mornings and afternoons. For a closer look, see how to find remote jobs that accept African time zones.

Equipment, power and internet for online lessons in Nigeria

Live lessons punish outages more than most remote jobs. If your power cuts mid-lesson, the student sees a frozen screen, and a few of those cost you reviews. Before you apply:

  • Computer: Preply and Cambly both expect a laptop or desktop, not a phone. Brighterly expects a computer with a webcam.
  • Power backup: An inverter with enough battery for your full teaching block, or a solar setup. A generator alone is noisy on camera.
  • Two internet routes: A main ISP or Starlink, plus a MiFi or phone hotspot on a different network as a fallback.
  • Headset with a microphone: It cuts echo and generator noise better than laptop speakers.
  • A plain, well-lit background: A window in front of you, not behind you.

Test the setup by recording your profile video at the same hour you plan to teach. If the network struggles at 9pm in your area, you'll know before a paying student does.

What employers and platforms look for

Marketplaces mostly judge you by your profile and video. Tutoring companies add screening steps. Across the official pages and ads we opened, these requirements come up most:

  • English level: Brighterly asks for C1 or above. Even for maths, the lesson is in English.
  • Experience with children: Brighterly asks for six months. Classroom teaching, NYSC teaching postings, lesson-teacher work and church or mosque classes can count if you describe them honestly.
  • Reliable hours: Companies want a fixed weekly commitment (20 hours in the Brighterly ad), not "when I'm free".
  • A demo lesson: Expect to teach a short sample lesson or record one.
  • Identity and payout details: Have your international passport or national ID ready, and a payout account that matches your name.

Do you need a TEFL certificate to teach English online from Nigeria? Preply and Cambly say no certificate is required. A recognised certificate can still help your profile and is often requested by schools. We compare options in our guide to certifications for remote education and research jobs. For the full application process, from profile to demo lesson, see how to get a remote online teaching job.

Getting paid for online teaching in Nigeria

Preply lists PayPal, Payoneer, Skrill and Wise (Transferwise) as payout methods. Cambly mentions weekly direct deposit and "more" without naming them, so check inside your tutor account. Tutoring companies that hire you as a contractor may pay through Deel, Payoneer or bank transfer.

Before you pick a payout route, compare the fees and the exchange rate you'll actually get when converting to naira. Our guide on how to receive dollar payments in Nigeria compares Grey, Raenest, Cleva, Payoneer, Wise and others. Tutoring income is taxable income, and tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains how the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 treats it.

Most platform tutors are independent contractors, not employees. That usually means no paid leave and no pension contributions, and you set aside your own tax. See contractor or employee when a foreign company hires you for what that changes.

Red flags in online teaching jobs

Teaching attracts scams because many applicants are new to remote work. Walk away if:

  • someone asks you to pay for "registration", "training materials" or a "teaching licence" before you are hired
  • the job comes through Telegram or WhatsApp with no company website or named employer
  • the "school" pays far above the platform rates in this article for little work
  • you're asked to receive money and forward it to "other tutors".

Also be careful with aggregator listings marked "remote from anywhere". The aggregator page we opened labelled several tutoring ads that way, but an aggregator's label isn't the employer's eligibility rule. Open the original ad on the company's own careers page and look for a country list, a residency rule or a request for a US Social Security Number. Our guide to remote job scams in Nigeria covers the wider warning signs.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians teach English online?

Yes. Preply and Cambly don't state a country restriction on their tutor pages, and both say no certificate is required (as of October 2026). Strong spoken English, a good profile video and a stable setup matter more than your nationality.

Can I teach on Outschool from Nigeria?

No. Outschool requires teachers to be full-time residents (at least six months a year) of a supported country, and in October 2026 Nigeria was not on the list. Citizenship isn't required, so a Nigerian living in the UK or Canada could apply.

How much does Cambly pay tutors in Nigeria?

Cambly lists $0.17 a minute (about $10.20 an hour) for adult lessons and $0.20 a minute on Cambly Kids, as of October 2026. At ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN, 23 October 2026), $10.20 is about ₦13,900 an hour. Cambly says new tutor sign-ups are temporarily limited.

Do I need a teaching qualification to tutor online?

Not for marketplaces like Preply and Cambly, which say no certificate or degree is needed. Tutoring companies often ask for more: Brighterly's maths ad asks for six months' experience teaching children and C1 English. A degree or NCE helps with company roles.

What hours will I work as an online tutor in Nigeria?

It depends on where your students live. UK after-school lessons (4pm to 7pm) fall at 5pm to 8pm in Lagos in winter. US East Coast after-school slots fall around 10pm to 2am Lagos time from 1 November 2026.

Can Nigerian teachers get paid in dollars for online teaching?

Yes, when the platform or company pays in dollars. Preply pays out by PayPal, Payoneer, Skrill or Wise. Compare withdrawal fees and conversion rates before you choose, because those decide how much naira reaches your account.

Is Tutor.com open to Nigerians?

No. Tutor.com's FAQ says applicants must currently live in the US and have a valid Social Security Number. It also says it can't accept applicants who need visa sponsorship.

Key takeaways

  • Cambly lists $0.17 a minute (about ₦13,900 an hour at the 23 October 2026 CBN rate). Preply keeps 100% of trial lessons and 33% to 18% of later lessons.
