Tutoring jobs that pay in dollars exist for people in Nigeria, but many of the best-known platforms will not accept you. Open marketplaces such as Preply and conversation platforms such as Cambly are the realistic starting points. US platforms such as Wyzant and Outschool require you to live in specific countries.

That difference is where most applicants lose time. Plenty of lists put "Wyzant, Outschool, Preply, Cambly" side by side as if anyone could join all four. Some "online tutor" ads aimed at Nigerians teach UK children but pay in naira. Others pay in pounds or euros, not dollars.

This guide shows where dollar-paying tutoring work is as of October 2026. It checks each platform's eligibility rules against its own pages and works out what you'd take home after commission. It also covers how the money reaches a Nigerian account and which hours you'd be teaching.

Quick answer

Nigeria-based tutors can realistically earn dollars on open marketplaces like Preply, which lists no tutor residency restriction and pays out through Payoneer, Wise, PayPal or Skrill. Cambly is another option: it pays $0.17 a minute for adult English conversation, but it was limiting new sign-ups as of October 2026. Wyzant requires US residence and a Social Security Number. Outschool only accepts teachers living in a short list of countries that excludes Nigeria. Always check the platform's own requirements page before applying.

Three kinds of dollar-paying tutoring work

Before comparing names, it helps to know which type of work you're looking at. Each type has a different eligibility rule and a different payment model.

Open tutoring marketplaces

On a marketplace, you build a profile, set your own hourly rate and students choose you. The platform takes a commission on each lesson. Preply works this way. Eligibility is usually broad because the platform isn't employing you: you're a self-employed tutor using its booking and payment system.

The catch is competition. Thousands of tutors are listed for English and maths, so a new profile with no reviews can sit idle for weeks. Your rate, your intro video and how quickly you answer students decide whether you get bookings.

Fixed-rate platforms

Here the platform sets the pay and sends students to you, usually by the minute or by the lesson. Cambly is the best-known example for English conversation. You don't need to set a price, but you can't raise it either, and sign-ups can close when the platform has enough tutors.

Tutoring companies and agencies

Some tutoring companies recruit tutors directly through job ads, often for exam subjects (IB, A level, SAT) or school-age learners. They pay an hourly rate set in the ad, sometimes in pounds or euros rather than dollars. Eligibility varies from ad to ad, and many don't say clearly where tutors may live.

Platform eligibility check for Nigeria-based tutors (October 2026)

We checked each platform's own tutor or teacher pages. "Not stated" means the page doesn't restrict where tutors live; it is not a promise that you'll be approved.

PlatformHow pay worksOpen to tutors in Nigeria?
PreplyYou set your rate; commission 33% falling to 18%No residency limit stated
CamblyFixed $0.17 a minute (adults), $0.20 (kids)Not stated; sign-ups limited
OutschoolYou set class prices; paid via PayPal in USDNo: approved countries only
WyzantYou set your rateNo: US residence and SSN required
Lanterna Education (ad)£22 an hourUnclear; ask the recruiter

Preply

Preply's page for tutors says no certificate or teaching experience is needed. You need a computer, a stable internet connection, a webcam and a microphone. You apply with a headshot, an intro video of up to two minutes and your availability, and Preply says it reviews profiles within three business days. The page does not restrict where tutors can live.

The commission is the part to understand before you set a price. Preply keeps 100% of a new student's trial lesson. After that its commission starts at 33% and drops to 18% as you teach more hours, according to the same page. Preply also says English tutors charge $15 to $25 an hour on average. That is Preply's own figure for the whole platform, not what a new tutor from Nigeria should expect in month one.

For payouts, Preply's help centre lists Wise, Payoneer, PayPal and Skrill. Preply credits a lesson to your balance once it's confirmed: about 15 minutes after a lesson in the Preply Classroom, or up to 72 hours after a lesson held outside it, unless the student confirms sooner. Before you rely on a payout method, check in your own account settings which ones are available for a Nigerian account.

Cambly

Cambly's tutor page quotes $0.17 a minute ($10.20 an hour) for the main platform and $0.20 a minute ($12 an hour) on Cambly Kids. Pay is weekly. Cambly says no teaching certificate, degree or previous teaching experience is required. That makes it one of the few dollar-paying options for someone who speaks clear English but has never taught.

Two cautions. First, the page says Cambly is temporarily limiting new tutor sign-ups, so your profile may take longer to process or may wait in a queue. Second, the page names direct deposit but doesn't list country rules or every payout method. Check the payment options shown in your Cambly account before you put in many hours.

Outschool

Outschool is often recommended to Nigerian teachers, but it isn't open to them. Outschool's own support article says teachers must live for at least six months a year in one of these places: the 50 US states, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain or the United Kingdom. Nigeria isn't on the list. Teachers also have to pass identity verification and a criminal background check.

If you live in one of those countries for most of the year, Outschool is worth a look. If you live in Nigeria, skip it.

Wyzant

Wyzant is a large US tutoring marketplace, and it's closed to tutors abroad. Its tutor sign-up page states that tutors "must reside within the United States and have a valid Social Security Number." There's no workaround: you would need both.

Tutoring company ads

Exam-prep and school-subject companies sometimes advertise remote tutor roles. For example, Lanterna Education's IB Graduate Tutor ad, open as of October 2026, offers £22 an hour. It asks for a score of 40 or more in the IB Diploma, a 7 in each subject you tutor, and current or recent university study. The ad says "fully remote" but doesn't say which countries tutors can live in, so a Nigeria-based applicant should ask before applying. The rate is in pounds, not dollars. That's still foreign currency, but it is a different payout from a USD platform.

This ad is typical of tutoring company listings: pay is clear, but location eligibility often isn't. Our guide on what "worldwide remote" means when applying from Nigeria explains how to read these ads.

Why some tutoring platforms won't accept you

US-only rules are usually about tax and safeguarding, not prejudice. A platform that pays US tutors has to collect tax identification (hence the SSN), and platforms serving children often run criminal background checks through services that only work in certain countries. Some platforms also limit where they contract because of employment law in particular states or countries.

So when a platform lists approved countries, it means it. Applying anyway, or using a VPN or someone else's details, can get your account closed and your earnings held. Our explainer on how to read US-only and Canada-only remote restrictions covers how these rules work.

How much you'd actually take home

Advertised rates aren't what lands in your account. Commission, unpaid trial lessons, idle hours and withdrawal fees all reduce what you keep. The examples below use the figures the platforms published as of October 2026 and WorkRemote's house rate of ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026).

Example (hypothetical): a new Preply English tutor

Amaka sets her Preply rate at $15 an hour, the bottom of Preply's stated average range for English tutors. As a new tutor she pays the top commission of 33%.

ItemFigure
Rate a student pays$15 an hour
Preply commission (33%)$4.95
Amaka keeps per lesson hour$10.05
15 paid hours a week for 4 weeks$603
In naira at ₦1,362About ₦821,000

That assumes 15 paid hours a week. A new profile often has far fewer, and every new student's trial lesson earns her nothing. Once she has taught enough hours to reach the 18% commission, the same $15 rate would leave her $12.30 an hour. Withdrawal fees then depend on whether she uses Payoneer, Wise, PayPal or Skrill.

Example (hypothetical): a Cambly conversation tutor

Tunde tutors on Cambly at the published $0.17 a minute. If he's on calls with students for 15 hours a week, that's $10.20 × 60 hours = $612 a month, or about ₦834,000 at ₦1,362. Cambly's rate is per minute of tutoring, so the number that matters is how many minutes you actually spend teaching, not how long you're logged in.

Which subjects pay better

On marketplaces where you set your own price, demand decides what you can charge. We don't have a verified source that ranks subjects by pay for Nigeria-based tutors, so treat what follows as general guidance rather than data.

  • Conversational English: the easiest to start and the most crowded. Prices are under pressure because so many tutors offer it.
  • Exam English (IELTS, business English): students pay for a result, so a tutor with a specific method can charge more than for general conversation.
  • Maths and sciences for UK or US curricula: students and parents want tutors who know GCSE, A level, IB or SAT content. Proof that you know the syllabus counts for more than a general degree.
  • Programming and data: a smaller group of students, but they're often adults paying out of a work budget.
  • Nigerian languages: Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa lessons for diaspora families and learners abroad are a niche where Nigerians have an obvious edge.

Getting paid in Nigeria

Most dollar-paying tutoring platforms pay through a third-party service rather than straight into a Nigerian naira account. Preply lists Wise, Payoneer, PayPal and Skrill. Outschool pays everyone through PayPal in USD. Cambly mentions direct deposit.

Three practical checks before you start teaching:

  1. Open the payout settings in your tutor account and confirm which methods it offers you as a Nigeria-based tutor. A help page may list options your country can't use.
  2. Set up the receiving account (for example Payoneer, or a USD account from a Nigerian fintech) in your own name, matching your NIN and BVN details exactly. A name mismatch is a common reason for held payments.
  3. Work out the fees at each step: the platform's withdrawal fee, the receiving service's fee and the exchange margin when you convert to naira.

Tutoring income is taxable like other self-employed income, and our tax guide for remote workers in Nigeria explains how that works under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. On a marketplace you're almost always an independent contractor, not an employee. Our article on contractor vs employee arrangements explains what that means for leave and benefits.

Teaching hours: when your students are awake

Tutoring is the one remote job where you can't choose your hours freely, because your students are usually in school or at work during the day. Here's how the main markets line up with Lagos time (WAT, UTC+1, no daylight saving):

Student locationTheir peak tutoring timeLagos time
UK, winter (GMT)4pm to 8pm5pm to 9pm
UK, summer (BST)4pm to 8pm4pm to 8pm
US East, summer (EDT)3pm to 8pm8pm to 1am
US East, winter (EST, from 1 November 2026)3pm to 8pm9pm to 2am
Gulf (Dubai, UTC+4)4pm to 8pm1pm to 5pm

UK students fit Nigerian evenings well. US students mean late nights, though US weekend mornings fall in the Lagos afternoon. Many adult learners on conversation platforms also book early-morning or lunchtime slots in their own time zone, which spreads demand across the day.

Power and internet

A lesson that drops halfway costs you a review, and early reviews decide whether new students book you. Before you open your calendar:

  • Have backup power that covers your full teaching block: an inverter with enough battery, solar or a generator positioned far enough away that students can't hear it.
  • Keep a second connection, such as a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network, and test switching between them mid-call.
  • Use a wired headset with a microphone. Laptop speakers pick up generator hum and street noise.
  • Light your face from the front. Students judge your intro video and first lesson partly on how clearly they can see and hear you.

Outschool, for example, sets a minimum of 3 Mbps upload and download. Even where a platform doesn't publish a figure, test your upload speed during your planned teaching hours, not at 6am when the network is quiet.

How to choose where to apply first

Apply to more than one place, but in a sensible order:

  1. Check eligibility first. Open the platform's own requirements or sign-up page and look for a residency rule. If Nigeria is excluded, stop there.
  2. Match the platform to your profile. No teaching experience: Cambly, if sign-ups are open, or Preply at a modest rate. Strong exam results or a teaching qualification: tutoring company ads and a higher Preply rate.
  3. Record a strong intro video. On marketplaces the video does the selling. Keep it short, show your face clearly in good light and say who you help and with what.
  4. Price for your first ten reviews, then raise your rate. On Preply your take-home rises as commission falls, and so does what students will pay once you have reviews.
  5. Track your real hourly earnings after commission, trials and fees, in a simple spreadsheet. If a platform keeps paying you less than $8 an hour after deductions, put your time elsewhere.

Red flags in "online tutor" offers

Tutoring attracts scams because the job sounds simple and the pay sounds good. Walk away if:

  • Someone asks you to pay a "registration", "training" or "placement" fee before you can tutor. Preply and Cambly don't charge to create a profile.
  • The "employer" contacts you only on WhatsApp or Telegram and has no website or careers page you can check.
  • You're promised a high dollar rate but asked to receive and forward money for "student payments".
  • An ad says it pays in dollars, but the contract or interview reveals naira pay at a fixed rate. That may be legal, but it isn't what you were told, so ask in writing before starting.
  • A recruiter wants your BVN, bank login or passport before any interview.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians tutor on Preply?

Yes, as far as Preply's published requirements show. Its tutor page sets no residency restriction, needs no certificate and lists Payoneer, Wise, PayPal and Skrill for payouts. Approval isn't automatic, and English is a crowded subject, so a clear intro video and a specific offer (IELTS, business English, maths for a named curriculum) help.

Does Cambly accept tutors from Nigeria?

Cambly's tutor page doesn't list country restrictions, but as of October 2026 it says it is temporarily limiting new tutor sign-ups. You can apply. Expect processing to be slow, and check which payout methods your account can use before teaching many hours.

Can I teach on Outschool or Wyzant from Nigeria?

No. Outschool only accepts teachers living for at least six months a year in its approved countries, which don't include Nigeria. Wyzant requires US residence and a valid Social Security Number.

How much can a Nigerian earn tutoring online in dollars?

It depends on your rate, hours and the platform's cut. On Cambly's published $0.17 a minute, 15 teaching hours a week comes to about $612 a month (about ₦834,000 at ₦1,362 to $1, 23 October 2026). On Preply, a $15 hourly rate leaves a new tutor $10.05 an hour after the 33% commission.

Do I need a TEFL certificate to tutor English online?

Not for every platform. Cambly and Preply both say no certificate is required. A TEFL or similar certificate can still help you charge more on Preply and qualify for tutoring companies that ask for one.

Are online tutoring jobs for UK students paid in pounds?

Not always. Some agencies hire Nigerian teachers for UK pupils but pay in naira, while companies like Lanterna Education advertise in pounds. Read the pay currency in the ad or contract, and ask in writing if it isn't stated.

Am I an employee if I tutor on a platform?

Usually not. Tutoring marketplaces treat tutors as independent contractors, so there's no paid leave, pension or employer tax deduction. You're responsible for your own tax in Nigeria.

Key takeaways

  • Preply is the most open dollar-paying tutoring marketplace for Nigeria-based tutors, but it keeps every trial lesson and 33% to 18% of each later lesson.
  • Cambly pays a fixed $0.17 a minute with no degree or certificate needed, but new sign-ups were limited as of October 2026.
  • Outschool and Wyzant are closed to tutors living in Nigeria because of their residency rules.
  • Tutoring company ads often pay well (Lanterna offers £22 an hour for IB tutors) but rarely state location eligibility, so ask first.
  • Work out your real hourly take-home after commission, trials, idle time and withdrawal fees before committing your evenings.
