The remote jobs most likely to pay a Nigerian $100,000 a year are senior engineering roles: staff and senior software engineers, security engineers, machine learning and data engineers, and engineering managers. A smaller number of senior product and enterprise sales roles also get there. These jobs exist, but they are rare. Most of them want 5 or more years of experience, and many companies pay people outside the US on a lower "rest of world" band.
This guide covers the roles that can realistically reach six figures from Nigeria, using US pay data as a benchmark and real pay bands from live job ads we opened in October 2026. It explains how location-based pay cuts into the headline number, and why $50 an hour as a contractor is not quite the same as a $104,000 salary. It also lists the signals that tell you whether a role can pay you, not just someone in San Francisco, a six-figure sum.
Quick answer
From Nigeria, $100,000 a year is realistic mainly in senior technical roles: senior or staff software engineer, security engineer, ML or data engineer, and engineering manager. Some senior product and enterprise sales roles also reach it. Expect to need 5 or more years of experience. Expect many companies to pay Nigeria-based staff on a lower global band. As of October 2026, one live ad offered $80,000 to $130,000 for "rest of world" applicants against $150,000 to $180,000 in the US.
What "six figures" means in dollars, naira and hours
A six-figure salary means at least $100,000 a year before tax. Broken down:
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Yearly | $100,000 |
| Monthly | about $8,333 |
| Hourly (2,080 hours) | about $48 |
| In naira, yearly | about ₦136.2 million |
| In naira, monthly | about ₦11.35 million |
Naira figures use ₦1,362 to $1, the CBN NFEM weighted average for 23 October 2026. The rate moves, so treat these as rough figures.
Two points make the headline figure smaller than it looks:
- Gross is not take-home. You still pay Nigerian tax, transfer and conversion fees, and possibly an employer-of-record or platform cut. Our guide to tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains the tax side, and how to receive dollars in Nigeria compares payment apps and fees.
- Total package is not base salary. Some ads quote base plus bonus, or base plus equity. A $100,000 "package" might be a $90,000 salary with a 10% bonus target that isn't guaranteed.
If $100,000 is too far away for now, the $60,000-a-year bracket is covered in remote jobs paying $5,000 a month or more.
How rare six-figure remote jobs are from Nigeria
They are rare. Most ads that pay $100,000 or more are restricted to the US, Canada, the UK or the EU. Many of the remaining global or EMEA ads (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) pay Nigeria-based hires on a lower band. We haven't found a reliable count of these roles, so we won't make one up. In practice, though, a six-figure remote salary from Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt sits at the top end of the market. It isn't a typical outcome.
The reasons are structural, not personal:
- US-only and EU-only ads. Many companies can only employ people in countries where they have a legal entity or a payroll provider. "Remote" often means "remote within the US". We explain this further in why some remote jobs are not available to Nigerians.
- Location-based pay. Many remote-first companies start with a San Francisco or US benchmark and multiply it by a location factor.
- Hiring cost and risk. Hiring in Nigeria usually means paying an employer of record (EOR) or setting you up as a contractor. Companies weigh that cost against the salary.
- Seniority. Six-figure global bands are nearly always for senior, staff, principal or manager levels. Entry-level remote roles open to Nigeria pay far less.
How location-based pay works, with real numbers
PostHog, a software company that publishes its pay approach, explains it plainly. Its compensation handbook says it benchmarks against the San Francisco market and then applies a location factor. The factor measures what it costs to hire in a location, not the cost of living. Outside the US the floor is 0.6. The handbook doesn't publish a Nigeria factor, and it says countries where PostHog hasn't hired before may be missing from its calculator.
Example (hypothetical): a company benchmarks a senior engineer at $180,000 in San Francisco. At a 0.6 location factor, the Nigeria-based offer would be $108,000, which is still six figures. At a 0.5 factor, used by a less generous company, it drops to $90,000. The location factor alone can push you above or below six figures.
GiveDirectly, a charity that publishes pay by location, shows the same gap. As of October 2026, its Technical Program Associate or Manager ad lists Nigeria among its priority hiring countries. It quotes a Manager-level total package (base plus a 10% bonus target) of $107,070 in the US and $72,550 in Kenya. Nigeria-based applicants get their figure at the recruiter screen. The ad also states a no-negotiation policy. Same job, same organisation, and the African figure comes in well under six figures.
How companies set these bands is covered in more depth in how international companies set salaries for remote employees.
The best remote jobs for six-figure salaries from Nigeria
The roles below are ordered roughly by how often they reach $100,000 for people outside the US. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) figures are national medians for US workers in May 2025. They show how highly a role is valued. They are not what a Nigeria-based worker will be offered, and remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually lower.
| Role | US median pay, May 2025 (BLS) | Typical experience for six figures |
|---|---|---|
| Senior or staff software engineer | $135,980 a year (software developers) | 5+ years |
| Security engineer | $129,180 a year (information security analysts) | 5+ years |
| ML, AI or data engineer | $120,230 a year (data scientists) | 5+ years |
| Engineering or IT manager | $175,140 a year (computer and information systems managers) | 5+ years plus leadership |
| Senior product manager | No BLS category used here | 6+ years |
| Enterprise account executive | No BLS category used here | Proven quota record |
Senior and staff software engineer
Senior and staff software engineering is the most common route to a six-figure remote salary from Nigeria. Global companies hire engineers across borders more readily than almost any other role, and engineering pay benchmarks start high. The BLS software developers page puts the US median at $135,980 a year as of May 2025, and $64.44 an hour for the wider developer and tester group.
As of October 2026, Slate's Senior Software Engineer, Video Platform listing is full-time remote "anywhere from EST (UTC-5) to UTC+2", a window that includes Lagos at UTC+1. It offers $80,000 to $130,000 base for the rest of the world (plus equity) against $150,000 to $180,000 in the US. It asks for 5 or more years of professional programming and strong C or C++. A Nigeria-based candidate near the top of that band would pass six figures. One near the bottom would get $80,000, roughly ₦109 million a year at the house rate.
What gets engineers to the top of a band: specialist stacks (systems programming, video, payments, distributed systems), ownership of large projects, and clear written communication. Backend, infrastructure and mobile roles at product companies tend to pay more than agency or outsourcing work. See the software engineer salary guide for pay at earlier levels.
Security engineer
Security work pays well because mistakes are expensive and experienced people are scarce. The BLS information security analysts page gives a US median of $129,180 a year ($62.11 an hour) as of May 2025. It notes that many people come into the field after working in IT, often as network or systems administrators.
The catch for Nigerians: some security roles need US government clearance or citizenship, and those are closed to you whatever your skills. Look for application security, cloud security and detection engineering at commercial software companies. The cybersecurity analyst career guide covers the earlier rungs.
Machine learning, AI and data engineer
The BLS data scientists page gives a US median of $120,230 a year ($57.80 an hour) as of May 2025. Six-figure global offers usually go to people who ship production systems: ML engineers, MLOps engineers, and data engineers running large pipelines. Analysts building dashboards rarely get them. If you're coming from data analysis, the machine learning engineer career guide shows the skills gap you'd need to close.
Engineering manager and head of engineering
Management is the highest-paid category in the table. The BLS computer and information systems managers page gives a US median of $175,140 a year ($84.20 an hour) as of May 2025 and says these jobs usually need 5 or more years in a related role. Remote engineering managers in Nigeria are often promoted from inside a distributed team, so getting hired as a senior engineer first is the usual route.
Senior product manager
Senior product managers at global software companies can reach six figures, but remote product roles open to Africa are fewer than engineering roles. They also tend to ask for a track record of shipping products to users in the company's main markets. Our product manager salary guide covers more typical pay.
Enterprise account executive
Senior sales is the main non-technical route. Pay is usually a base salary plus commission, quoted as on-target earnings (OTE). OTE is what you earn if you hit quota, not a guaranteed figure. Six-figure OTE roles open to Nigeria are uncommon and usually involve selling into Africa, the Middle East or Europe. See the account executive salary guide for typical pay structures.
What about non-tech roles generally?
Customer support, virtual assistance, content writing and general admin rarely reach $100,000 from Nigeria, even at senior level. They can still pay well in dollars. Our best-paying remote jobs for Nigerians guide covers those realistic middle bands.
Remote jobs paying $50 an hour or more
$50 an hour is roughly six figures for a full-time worker: 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, and 2,080 × $50 = $104,000. The roles that reach $50 an hour are the same ones listed above. Hourly pay usually comes as a contract, either directly with a company or through a talent network or freelance platform.
The sum changes once you remember that contractors don't get paid leave:
| Scenario | Hours billed | Gross at $50 an hour |
|---|---|---|
| Full year, no time off | 2,080 | $104,000 |
| 4 weeks unpaid leave | 1,920 | $96,000 |
| 6 weeks off plus gaps between contracts | 1,840 | $92,000 |
Then subtract platform fees, payment and conversion fees, and the cost of your own laptop, power backup and internet. A $50-an-hour contractor can easily end up with less money than an employee on a $100,000 salary with paid leave and equipment covered. The contractor versus employee guide explains the trade-offs, including EOR employment.
Freelancers who reach $50 an hour from Nigeria are usually senior specialists with a niche and repeat clients. Examples are an experienced backend engineer, a security consultant or a Salesforce architect. Generalists bidding on marketplaces rarely get there.
How to tell whether a job can pay you six figures
A US salary in an ad says little about what a Nigeria-based hire will get. Before you apply, check these things on the ad itself:
- Is Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or "worldwide" actually eligible? "Remote" alone often means one country. Check the location line and any country list. As of October 2026, Alpaca's Senior Software Engineer, Market Data ad says "Remote - EMEA" and mentions teammates in Nigeria, but it doesn't confirm Nigeria for that particular role. Ask the recruiter if you're unsure.
- Is there a separate rest-of-world band? If the ad shows one, read that figure, not the US one. Ads with published bands are discussed in finding remote jobs with salary bands published in advance.
- Is the figure base, OTE or total package? Bonus targets, commission and equity are not guaranteed cash. Equity gets its own guide in remote jobs offering equity or stock options.
- What is the time-zone window? A window like UTC-5 to UTC+2 works from Lagos. Roles that need US Pacific hours mean working until around 1am or 2am in Lagos.
- Who pays you, and how? Find out whether you'd be employed through an EOR, contracted directly or hired by a local entity. This affects benefits, tax and how you receive dollars.
- Is it a Nigerian company paying in naira? Some senior Nigerian roles are advertised as remote. As of October 2026, Moniepoint's Principal Mobile Engineer ad is "Remote, Lagos, Nigeria", asks for at least 8 years of experience and doesn't state pay. These can be good jobs, but don't assume dollar pay unless the offer says so.
How to work towards a six-figure remote salary from Nigeria
There's no shortcut. People who get these offers usually have years of evidence behind them. This is the usual order:
- Get to genuine senior level first. Most six-figure global ads we opened asked for 4 to 8 or more years. Senior means you've owned systems or outcomes, not just held the title.
- Specialise where talent is scarce. C/C++ systems work, payments, security, ML infrastructure and large-scale data pay better than crowded general web development.
- Build public proof. Open-source contributions, technical writing, talks or a detailed portfolio. Remote hiring managers can't meet you in person, so give them something to read.
- Target companies that pay globally and say so. Look for ads with rest-of-world bands, EMEA or worldwide eligibility, and windows that include UTC+1.
- Practise long-form written communication. Distributed teams run on written proposals and updates. Clear, concise English is part of the job.
- Prepare a dependable work setup. An inverter or solar backup, two internet connections (for example fibre plus a MiFi or phone hotspot) and a quiet space. Senior people are expected to show up for on-call and important meetings.
- Negotiate with data. Know the band, your level and the location factor before you name a number. Our guide on negotiating a dollar salary covers this.
Example (hypothetical): Chidi is a backend engineer in Ibadan with seven years of experience, the last three running payment systems for a Nigerian fintech. He targets EMEA and worldwide roles with published bands, writes a short case study of a migration he led, and turns down roles that need Pacific hours. An offer at the middle of a $80,000 to $130,000 band would be about $105,000. That is a realistic stretch target for this profile, not a guaranteed outcome.
Common mistakes when chasing six-figure remote pay
- Reading the US range as your range. The US figure applies to US hires. Look for the global band or ask early.
- Applying to roles that legally exclude you. US-only, clearance-required or "must be authorised to work in the UK" roles won't change for a strong CV.
- Taking $50 an hour as equal to a $104,000 salary. Unpaid leave, fees and equipment costs make it less.
- Over-claiming seniority. Six-figure interviews test system design, leadership and depth. A senior title on its own won't get you through them.
- Falling for "six-figure" offers that ask for money. A legitimate employer never charges you to apply, train or get equipment. Unrealistic pay plus an upfront fee is a classic scam pattern. See how to spot remote job scams in Nigeria.
Frequently asked questions
Is a $100,000 remote salary realistic for someone living in Nigeria?
Yes, but mainly for senior technical professionals, and it's uncommon. Most six-figure offers open to Nigeria are for senior or staff engineers, security engineers, ML or data engineers and engineering managers with 5 or more years of experience. Many companies also pay people outside the US on lower bands.
How much is $100,000 a year in naira?
About ₦136.2 million a year, or about ₦11.35 million a month, at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). What you actually receive will be lower after tax, fees and the exchange rate on the day you convert.
Which remote jobs pay $50 an hour or more?
The same senior roles that reach six figures: senior software engineers, security engineers and consultants, ML and data engineers, engineering managers and specialist consultants. As of May 2025 the BLS US medians for these occupations were all above $57 an hour. Nigeria-based contractors usually get less than US rates.
Why do companies pay Nigerian remote workers less than US staff for the same job?
Many companies set pay by location. They start with a US benchmark and multiply it by a factor for each country. PostHog's published handbook, for example, uses a floor of 0.6 outside the US. GiveDirectly publishes a Kenya package roughly a third lower than its US package for the same role.
Can a freelancer earn six figures from Nigeria?
Yes, but it usually takes senior specialist skills and steady, repeat clients. At $50 an hour you'd need about 2,000 billed hours a year to reach $100,000. Gaps between contracts, unpaid leave and fees make that hard to sustain.
Do I need a degree for a six-figure remote job?
Not always. Many software companies care more about proven experience than a degree. But some employers and visa-linked roles do require one, and BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the usual entry route for information security analysts. Strong public proof of your work helps make up for not having one.
Are six-figure remote jobs taxed in Nigeria?
Yes. If you live in Nigeria, your income is generally taxable in Nigeria whoever pays you. How it's handled depends on your arrangement, for example working as a contractor or being employed through an EOR. Our Nigeria Tax Act 2025 guide for remote workers explains your obligations.
Key takeaways
- Six-figure remote salaries from Nigeria exist but are rare. They cluster in senior engineering, security, ML and data, and engineering management.
- Expect to need 5 or more years of real senior experience. Many global ads ask for 4 to 8 or more.
- Location-based pay is the biggest obstacle: as of October 2026, one live ad offered $80,000 to $130,000 for the rest of the world against $150,000 to $180,000 in the US.
- $50 an hour works out to about $104,000 for 2,080 hours, but contractors lose income to unpaid leave and fees.
- Check eligibility, the global pay band, the time-zone window and the payment setup before applying.
