You can learn most remote work skills free of charge. The best free options in October 2026 are Alison's remote working course, LearnFree's Google Workspace and Microsoft Office lessons, Atlassian's free Jira, Trello and Confluence courses, the British Council's LearnEnglish business resources, and job-skill academies such as HubSpot Academy, Google Skillshop and freeCodeCamp.

The catch is that "free" means different things on different platforms. Some courses are free from start to finish. Some are free to learn but charge for the certificate. Others, including most of Coursera since August 2025, only let you try the first module before asking you to pay.

This guide sorts the options by the skill they teach, explains what each one really costs, and gives you a six-week study plan that works on a phone and Nigerian data. It also shows how to turn a finished course into something a remote employer will take seriously. A certificate on its own rarely gets anyone hired.

Quick answer

The best free courses for remote work skills combine three things: how to work on a distributed team (Alison's Best Practices for Remote Working), the tools remote teams use (LearnFree for Google Docs, Sheets and Teams, and Atlassian for Jira, Trello and Confluence), and one paid-work skill (HubSpot Academy, Google Skillshop or freeCodeCamp). Before you enrol, check whether the course is free to complete or only free to preview.

What counts as a remote work skill

Remote work skills fall into two groups. The first group is the skills every remote worker needs, whatever the job. The second is the job skill that someone actually pays you for. A course on "working from home" covers the first group. It will not get you hired unless you also have the second.

The first group includes:

  • Writing clear messages that a colleague in another time zone can act on without a call (asynchronous communication)
  • Running your own day: planning tasks, meeting deadlines and saying early when something is late
  • Using shared tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Zoom, Jira, Trello and Notion
  • Handling time zones without missing meetings
  • Basic security: strong passwords, two-factor authentication and spotting phishing emails

The second group is the role itself: customer support, bookkeeping, marketing, development, design and so on. Our remote career guides by role list the skills and courses for each one.

How we chose these free courses

We kept a course on this list only if it met all of these tests when we checked in October 2026:

  1. The provider's own page says the learning is free. We didn't rely on third-party lists, because many still describe terms that have since changed.
  2. It is self-paced. You can study at 11pm when the power comes back, not at a fixed class time.
  3. It teaches something a remote employer uses. We left out general motivation courses.
  4. It doesn't appear to block learners in Nigeria. None of the pages we checked limited enrolment by country, but sign-up rules can change.

We have not taken these courses ourselves, and the WorkRemote team has no partnership with any provider listed here. Prices and access rules change, so check the course page before you start.

Free courses on working remotely itself

Alison: Best Practices for Remote Working

This is the most direct free course on the subject. Alison's Best Practices for Remote Working is a beginner-level course that takes about 1.5 to 3 hours on average, according to the course page. It covers teamwork in virtual and hybrid teams, remote work policies, fixing technical problems, staying motivated, securing remote access and protecting data, and managing your time.

The learning is free. The page also offers a CPD-accredited certificate through a "Claim Your Certificate" option, but it didn't show a price when we checked. Alison generally charges for certificates, so expect a fee if you want one, and remember you don't need it to use what you learnt.

Who it suits: complete beginners who have never worked on a remote team and want the vocabulary before their first interview.

GitLab's "How to Manage a Remote Team" on Coursera (no longer fully free)

Many older lists recommend this course as free, so here is the current position. GitLab's How to Manage a Remote Team is taught by Darren Murph and Jessica Reeder of GitLab, which runs as a fully remote company. It has five modules totalling about 11 hours and ends with a peer-reviewed plan for moving a team to remote work. It is rated intermediate and aimed at people with at least a year of management experience.

As of October 2026, the course page says it is "Included with Coursera Plus" and that you need to buy the certificate option to access the materials. It mentions a possible free trial for eligible learners. In practice this is now a paid course with a free taste, not a free course.

What changed on Coursera

Coursera ended its old free "audit" option. Its August 2025 announcement of the course preview experience says a new preview model "replaces our audit experience". You can now try the first module of nearly every course for free, including graded assignments where the course has them, but full access needs payment.

Coursera also says it offers financial aid that can give eligible learners full access "for free or at a reduced cost", and that it uses regional pricing. If a particular Coursera course matters to you, apply for financial aid instead of assuming you can audit it.

Free courses for the tools remote teams use

Knowing the tools saves you embarrassment in your first week. A support agent who has never shared a Google Doc, or a project coordinator who has never moved a Jira ticket, gets noticed quickly.

LearnFree: Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and Teams

LearnFree, the site that used to be GCFGlobal, says it offers "Free Skills. Always." It has short, plain lessons on:

  • Google Docs, Drive, Sheets and Slides
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams
  • Gmail and computer basics
  • Internet safety
  • CV writing, interviewing skills, and job search and networking

The lessons are mostly text and images with some video, which keeps data use lower than video-only courses. This is the best free starting point if your computer skills are basic. For which jobs suit that level, see remote jobs for beginners with basic computer skills.

Atlassian: Jira, Confluence, Trello and Loom

Jira and Confluence show up in job adverts for project coordinators, QA testers, developers, Scrum Masters and support teams. Atlassian's learning hub says you can "find free courses" and lets you filter the catalogue by app, including Jira, Confluence, Trello and Loom. It also lists free online classes run by community experts.

Atlassian also sells instructor-led training and certifications. The learning hub didn't show their prices, so check before you assume a certification is free. The free courses are enough to put "Jira (Atlassian training)" on your CV honestly. Pair them with a practice board you can show an employer.

Microsoft Learn

Microsoft Learn's training hub offers self-paced interactive modules, learning paths and career paths linked to Microsoft credentials. It is most useful if you are aiming at IT support, Microsoft 365 administration, Power BI or cloud roles. The training hub page we checked did not state prices, so confirm on the module page that it costs nothing. Microsoft certification exams are a separate step from the learning modules.

Free courses for written English and communication

Most remote work happens in writing: Slack messages, emails, ticket replies and status updates. Clear, polite, specific English is a hiring advantage, especially for customer support, virtual assistant and operations roles.

The British Council's LearnEnglish site has free Business English resources, including "English for emails" and "Podcasts for professionals", plus free writing and listening practice from level A1 to C1. Its full courses and tutoring are paid, but the free resources are enough for steady practice. If your English is already strong, use the C1 materials to polish tone and conciseness rather than grammar.

For deeper practice, see improving written communication for remote work and business English for international remote jobs.

Free courses that build a paid job skill

Learning how to work remotely gets you through the door. The job skill is what you get paid for. These three providers teach skills that remote employers advertise for, and the learning is free.

HubSpot Academy (marketing, sales and CRM)

HubSpot Academy's course library describes itself as "completely free & online": you create a free account and get the whole library. Examples include the Social Media Marketing certification (about 5 hours) and the HubSpot Reporting certification (about 6 hours). There are also courses on lead management and on HubSpot's free marketing tools.

HubSpot is a CRM used by many small and mid-sized companies abroad, so these courses suit people aiming at digital marketing roles, sales development or email marketing.

Google Skillshop (Google Ads and Analytics)

Google's Skillshop runs free foundational certifications for Google Ads and Google Analytics. Google's own page on Skillshop professional certifications draws the line clearly: foundational certifications remain free, while the newer professional Google Ads certifications (Display, Search and Video) were open to a limited audience and, Google says, "will require a fee" in future.

The free foundational certificates are useful proof for PPC and performance marketing applications. They prove you know the platform. They do not prove you can run a profitable campaign, so add a small practice project where you can.

freeCodeCamp (coding)

freeCodeCamp is a donor-supported US charity whose stated mission is "to help people learn to code for free". Its curriculum covers web development, JavaScript, Python and data analysis, and you build projects as you go. Those projects can go straight into a portfolio.

Remote developer jobs are competitive, and a freeCodeCamp certificate alone won't get you hired. The projects you build will help. Our frontend developer career guide explains what comes after the first course.

Free, free to preview, or free except the certificate

Before you enrol, work out which kind of "free" you are looking at. This table summarises what we found as of October 2026.

Watch for these patterns:

  • A "free" course whose page only lets you start. That is a preview. Read the enrolment options before you put in hours.
  • Free learning, paid certificate. That is fine if you only need the skill. Many employers care more about what you can show than about the certificate.
  • "Free remote work training" on WhatsApp or Telegram that ends with a fee to "activate" a job. That is a scam pattern, not a course. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria explains the warning signs.

A free six-week study plan (from zero to job-ready basics)

Example (hypothetical): Amaka is a graduate in Ibadan who wants a remote customer support or virtual assistant job and has about an hour a day. This is a plan she could follow using only the free courses above.

In each week, also do one practical task that leaves evidence:

  1. Write a one-page remote work routine: your hours, your backup internet plan and how you'll report progress.
  2. Build a shared Google Sheet that tracks 20 mock support tickets, with columns and a filter.
  3. Write three professional emails: a delay notice, a polite follow-up and a handover note.
  4. Set up a public Trello board for a mock project and share a view-only link.
  5. Rewrite five rambling messages into short, clear ones.
  6. Put everything in a simple Google Drive folder and link it from your CV.

Time zone practice belongs in this plan too. Nigeria uses WAT (UTC+1) all year. As of October 2026, UK clocks have gone back, so Lagos is one hour ahead of London until late March. From 1 November 2026, US Eastern time is six hours behind Lagos. A 9am New York meeting is 3pm in Lagos. Practise converting meeting times until you can do it without thinking.

Studying on Nigerian data and unreliable power

Free courses still cost data and electricity, and Nigerian learners plan around both. A few habits help:

  • Choose text-heavy lessons first. LearnFree, HubSpot's written resources and freeCodeCamp's coding exercises use far less data than hour-long video lectures.
  • Download video when your data plan is cheapest. If your network or ISP has a night bundle, queue video lessons for then.
  • Study on your phone, practise on a laptop. Reading lessons works fine on a phone. Spreadsheets, Trello boards and code need a laptop.
  • Treat outages as a test. Remote employers will ask how you work through power and internet cuts. An inverter or solar backup, plus two internet sources (for example a MiFi and a phone hotspot), is the answer they want to hear.

For cheap ways to build skills beyond courses, see building digital skills without spending much money.

Turning a free course into proof employers accept

A row of free certificates on LinkedIn tells a recruiter you started something. It doesn't show you can do the work. To make a course count:

  • Keep the artefact, not just the badge. The Trello board, the mock ticket sheet, the email samples and the code repository are what get discussed in interviews.
  • Write it on your CV as a skill with evidence. "Built a ticket-tracking sheet in Google Sheets with filters and status columns (LearnFree course)" beats "Certificate in Google Sheets".
  • Match the course to the job ad. If ads for your target role mention Zendesk, HubSpot or Jira, learn that tool next rather than collecting unrelated certificates.
  • Be honest about level. A two-hour course makes you familiar with a tool, not an expert. Interviewers test this.

If you have no work history at all, our guide on proving your skills without work experience goes further, and remote jobs for Nigerians with no experience shows which roles hire beginners. Frequently asked questions

Are there free remote work courses with a certificate?

Yes, but most free certificates come from job-skill platforms rather than general remote work courses. HubSpot Academy's certifications and Google Skillshop's foundational certifications were free as of October 2026. Alison's remote working course is free to study, but its certificate is claimed separately and the price wasn't shown when we checked.

Can I still audit Coursera courses for free?

Generally, no. Coursera's August 2025 announcement says a free preview of the first module replaced the audit option on nearly every course. A small number of courses remain free, and Coursera offers financial aid that can cover full access for eligible learners.

Which free course should a complete beginner take first?

Start with LearnFree if you're not yet comfortable with Google Docs, Sheets or Outlook, then take Alison's Best Practices for Remote Working. Together they cover the basic tools and habits a remote team expects, in a few hours each, before you specialise in a job skill.

Do remote employers care about free certificates?

Some do, but they care more about evidence. A free Google Ads or HubSpot certificate can help your CV get past a first screen for marketing roles. What wins interviews is a sample you built, such as a campaign plan, a support ticket sheet or a coding project.

Can I take these courses on my phone?

Yes, for most of the reading. LearnFree, HubSpot and the British Council's resources all work in a mobile browser. Practical work such as spreadsheets, Jira boards and coding goes better on a laptop, and employers will expect you to have one for the job.

Are free courses on WhatsApp and Telegram channels legitimate?

Some channels simply share links to real courses. But any "training" that ends with a fee to secure a job, buy a starter kit or activate an account is a common scam pattern. Learn from the provider's own website, and never pay a recruiter to be hired.

How long does it take to learn remote work skills for free?

With about an hour a day, most people can cover the basics in four to six weeks: remote work habits, Google Workspace or Microsoft Office, one project tool and email writing. Learning a job skill to a hireable level takes longer and depends on the role.

Key takeaways

  • The strongest free mix is one course on how remote teams work, one on the tools they use and one on a job skill.
  • Alison, LearnFree, Atlassian, the British Council, HubSpot Academy, Google Skillshop and freeCodeCamp all offered free learning as of October 2026.
  • Coursera replaced its free audit option with a first-module preview in August 2025, so older "free Coursera" lists are out of date.
  • Free learning and a free certificate are different things. Check the enrolment page before you put in hours.
  • Employers respond to evidence such as boards, spreadsheets, email samples and code, more than to a list of badges.
  • Plan your study around data costs and power cuts, and be ready to explain your backup setup in interviews.

Next steps

Pick one course from each group above and start with the one that fills your biggest gap this week. Once you have a small portfolio, look at current remote jobs open to applicants in Nigeria to see which tools and skills the ads mention, and adjust what you learn next. On the jobs page, run a search and use "Get email updates" to receive a free daily digest of new matching jobs. If you want help presenting your new skills, the WorkRemote team's CV and LinkedIn rewrite is part of Premium (₦29,999 a month). Applying for jobs on WorkRemote is always free.
