Slack vs Microsoft Teams for Remote Communication
Slack vs Microsoft Teams for remote workers in Nigeria: how each works, data use on calls, device needs, freelancer access and habits managers notice.

If you get a remote job from Nigeria, you probably won't choose between Slack and Microsoft Teams. Your employer will already use one of them, and your job is to be good at it from your first day. In practice, Slack is common in tech start-ups and software companies. Teams is common in organisations that already run their email and files on Microsoft 365, such as corporates, consultancies, NGOs and many UK and European firms.
This guide compares the two from the side of the person doing the work rather than the IT manager buying the licence. It covers how each tool works day to day, what each costs in data on a Nigerian network, which phones and laptops they need, how freelancers juggle several clients' workspaces, and the habits that make you look reliable to a manager five or six hours away. All prices and limits are as of October 2026.
Quick answer
Slack and Microsoft Teams both offer channels, direct messages, voice and video calls and file sharing. Slack is mainly a chat tool with quick "huddle" calls and is popular with start-ups. Teams is part of Microsoft 365 and handles formal meetings and Office files better. For a remote job you rarely choose: you learn whichever tool your employer uses. The habits that matter most work the same in both: threads, clear status updates and careful use of data.
Who decides: your employer, not you
Most remote roles come with the tool already in place. Your contract will say nothing about Slack or Teams, but your first week will happen inside one of them, and a few job ads list "experience with Slack" or "Microsoft Teams" as a requirement.
A rough way to guess which one you'll get:
- Start-ups, SaaS companies and developer teams lean towards Slack, because it connects to tools like GitHub, Jira, Google Drive and their support platforms.
- Companies that use Outlook, SharePoint and OneDrive usually use Teams, because it sits in the same Microsoft account and stores channel files in SharePoint.
- Agencies and freelance clients might use either, and some use both: Slack internally, and Teams to talk to a corporate client.
Treat this as a pattern, not a rule. The only reliable signal is the job ad itself or what the recruiter tells you. If you're asked which you've used, the honest answer "I've used Slack daily and I'm comfortable in Teams" is worth more than claiming expert-level use of both.
Slack vs Microsoft Teams at a glance
| Feature | Slack | Microsoft Teams |
|---|---|---|
| Main strength | Fast chat, threads, app integrations | Meetings, Office files, Outlook calendar |
| Quick calls | Huddles (audio first, video optional) | Calls and scheduled meetings |
| Files | Shared in messages, links to Drive etc. | Stored in SharePoint and OneDrive |
| External people | Slack Connect or guest accounts | Guest access or shared channels |
| Typical employer | Start-ups, tech, SaaS | Corporates, NGOs, Microsoft 365 users |
Both have desktop, web and mobile apps. Both let you set a status, mute notifications outside your hours and search old messages, though how far back you can search depends on the plan your employer pays for.
How Slack works for remote teams
Slack organises conversation into channels (for example #support-escalations or #marketing), direct messages between people, and threads, which keep replies attached to the original message so a busy channel stays readable. A remote team that uses Slack well runs much of its day there, often in writing.
Huddles: Slack's quick calls
A huddle is a live call you start from any channel or direct message. According to Slack's huddles help page, video is optional (you switch it on with the camera icon), up to two people can share their screen at once, and on paid plans a huddle can have up to 50 participants, with 25 on video at the same time. On the free plan, huddles are limited to two people. In a browser, only Google Chrome and Firefox support huddles.
For Nigerian workers this matters because huddles are informal. A manager in London might say "quick huddle?" with ten seconds' notice. If your data or power is shaky, joining with audio only and your camera off is normal and acceptable.
What the free Slack plan limits
Employers usually pay for Slack, but you'll meet the free plan if you set up your own workspace to practise or a small client hasn't upgraded. Slack's plan comparison lists these free plan limits as of October 2026:
- You can access only the last 90 days of messages and files, and content older than one year is permanently deleted.
- Huddles are one-to-one only.
- Up to 10 app integrations.
- Slack Connect (chatting with people at other companies) is one-to-one only.
- No Workflow Builder, and no AI features such as conversation summaries.
The practical lesson: if a client runs on free Slack, don't treat it as storage. Save briefs, approvals and payment agreements somewhere permanent, such as email or a shared document. After 90 days you won't be able to scroll back to prove what was agreed.
Slack prices, if you're the one paying
Some Nigerian freelancers and agency owners pay for Slack themselves. Slack's pricing page showed prices in pounds when we opened it (as of October 2026): Pro at £7 per user a month on monthly billing or £5.75 a month on annual billing, and Business+ at £14.40 a month monthly or £12 a month annually. Enterprise pricing is through sales. Slack charges only for members who are active in a 28-day period. Prices shown to you may be in dollars and can differ by region, so check the page before budgeting.
How Microsoft Teams works for remote teams
Teams groups people into teams (often a department or a client), each with channels, plus one-to-one and group chats. Its strongest area is meetings: scheduled calls that show up in your Outlook calendar, with recordings, chat and shared files attached.
Files posted in a Teams channel live in SharePoint, so you open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents inside Teams while colleagues edit the same copy. If your role involves reports, spreadsheets or client decks, that's where Teams beats Slack. For the wider Microsoft toolset (Outlook, OneDrive, Excel online), see our planned guide on using Microsoft 365 in a remote job.
How Teams behaves on a weak connection
Microsoft's network guidance for Teams says that when bandwidth is short, Teams gives audio priority over video. That's useful on a congested 4G network: your voice should keep coming through even when your face freezes. The same page says Teams can deliver HD video in under 1.5 Mbps.
Teams and VPNs
The same Microsoft page recommends sending Teams traffic around a VPN rather than through it. It says VPNs are typically not designed for real-time media and can add latency and jitter. If you use a VPN for other work and your Teams calls sound robotic, disconnect the VPN for the call (unless your employer requires it, in which case tell IT) and test again.
Data, power and devices: the Nigerian side of the comparison
The marketing pages leave this section out, but it's the one that decides whether a Nigerian remote worker sounds professional on calls.
How much data a call can use
Microsoft publishes bandwidth figures per device for Teams. Slack doesn't publish equivalent huddle figures on the help pages we opened, so the Teams numbers are the best published guide. Treat them as a rough guide for Slack too.
| Teams activity (meetings) | Minimum (up/down) | Recommended (up/down) |
|---|---|---|
| Audio only | 10/10 kbps | 58/58 kbps |
| Video | 150/200 kbps | 2,500/4,000 kbps |
| Screen sharing | 250/250 kbps | 2,500/2,500 kbps |
Source: Microsoft Learn, Prepare your organization's network for Teams, checked October 2026.
Example (hypothetical): You join a one-hour team meeting. These are our own calculations from Microsoft's figures, assuming the rate holds for the full hour:
- Audio only at the recommended rate: 58 kbps each way comes to about 26 MB down and 26 MB up, so roughly 52 MB for the hour.
- Video at the minimum rate: 200 kbps down and 150 kbps up is about 90 MB plus 68 MB, roughly 160 MB.
- Video at the recommended rate: 4,000 kbps down and 2,500 kbps up comes to about 1.8 GB plus 1.1 GB. That's close to 3 GB for one meeting.
Real usage varies with layout, resolution and how many cameras are on. The lesson for a worker on a MiFi bundle is clear, though: camera-on meetings with everyone's video showing can eat a monthly data plan quickly. Keep your camera on for interviews, one-to-ones and team rituals where it's expected, and use audio for the rest. Our planned guides on internet options for remote work in Nigeria and staying productive when your connection is unreliable cover providers and backups.
Phones and laptops that run them
Slack's minimum requirements (as of October 2026) are worth checking before you accept an offer, because many Nigerian workers use older or second-hand devices:
- Desktop app: macOS 13 or later, Windows 11 version 23H2 or later, or recent Ubuntu or Red Hat Linux.
- Mobile app: iOS 17 or later, or Android 11 or later on devices with Google Play Services.
If your laptop still runs Windows 10, the supported route is Slack in Chrome or Firefox, which also supports huddles. If your phone is on Android 10 or older, plan to upgrade or rely on the laptop. Teams also has hardware and OS requirements; check Microsoft's current list for your device before your start date.
Power and connection habits that help
- Keep the desktop app on your laptop and the mobile app on your phone, signed in to the same workspace, so that a power cut doesn't take you offline. Switch to the phone on the inverter or a power bank and carry on.
- Have two ways online: a MiFi plus a phone hotspot on a different network, or fixed broadband plus mobile data.
- Before a scheduled meeting, close video streaming, cloud backups and big downloads on the same connection.
- If a call drops, write in the chat straight away ("Lost connection, rejoining in 1 min, audio only"). Silence looks worse than a dropped call.
Working across time zones in Slack and Teams
Lagos is on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year. From 25 October 2026 the UK is on GMT, so London is one hour behind Lagos. US Eastern is 5 hours behind Lagos until 1 November 2026 and 6 hours behind after that. A US manager's 9am Monday standup is 3pm in Lagos in winter.
Both tools give you ways to make the gap visible:
- Set your time zone correctly in your profile, so colleagues see your local time when they open your profile or message you.
- Use your status: "Offline until 9am WAT (3am ET)" stops people waiting on a reply that won't come.
- Pause notifications outside your hours, so you don't wake to a 2am ping.
- Schedule messages where your workspace allows it, so a note you finish at 11pm Lagos time lands at the start of your manager's morning.
Our planned guide to managing tasks across multiple time zones covers the planning side.
Habits that make you look good in either tool
Software skills are easy to learn in a week. Communication habits are what managers notice, and they apply in Slack and Teams alike.
Reply in threads
Answering in a thread keeps a channel readable for people catching up hours later in another time zone. Posting five separate replies in the main channel is one of the quickest ways to look new.
Write updates someone can act on without a call
Remote managers love an update they can read in 30 seconds.
Example (hypothetical) end-of-day update in a support team's channel:
EOD Tue (WAT): Closed 41 tickets, 3 escalated to billing (links in thread). Refund bug on Android reproduced, steps in JIRA-212. Tomorrow: clear the backlog in the Spanish queue first. Blocker: need access to the Stripe dashboard, @Sarah can you approve?
It covers what got done, what's next and what's blocking you, and it names the person who can unblock it.
Don't send "Hi" on its own
A message that just says "Hi" or "Are you there?" makes someone in another time zone wait a whole round trip. Put the question in the first message.
Use reactions sensibly
A thumbs-up or a tick tells the sender you've seen and handled a message without adding noise. Agree with your team what each reaction means.
Keep decisions somewhere permanent
Chat history can be limited by plan or deleted by retention settings. When something important is agreed (a deadline, a rate, a change of scope), confirm it by email or in the project tool. For the wider skill set, see our planned guide on communicating professionally with international colleagues.
Freelancers: juggling several clients' workspaces
Freelancers and virtual assistants often sit inside three or four clients' tools at once. The two products handle outsiders differently.
In Slack
A client can bring you in as a guest or connect with you through Slack Connect. Slack's guide to guest roles says guests exist only on paid plans. Single-channel guests are free and see one channel. Multi-channel guests see the channels they're given and are billed like regular members. Guest accounts can be set to switch off on a chosen date. Slack suggests Slack Connect instead when the outside person's own company already uses Slack.
What this means for you: don't be surprised if you only see one channel, and don't be offended when access ends with the contract. Keep your own copies of the work you might want for a portfolio, as long as the client allows it.
In Teams
Organisations invite outsiders as guests using an email address. Microsoft's guidance on collaborating with guests notes that a guest must be added to at least one team before guest features work. It also points to shared channels, which let people from another Microsoft 365 organisation work in a channel without signing in to that organisation. As a guest you'll switch between organisations in the Teams app, and notifications from a client you aren't currently viewing can be easy to miss. Check each organisation at set times in your day.
A simple multi-client routine
- Keep a separate browser profile for each client so their logins, Slack workspaces and Teams accounts don't mix.
- Mute channels you don't need, and turn on notifications only for direct messages and mentions.
- Check every workspace at the same three or four times a day and tell clients when those times are.
- Never move a client's files to your personal accounts without permission. Many contracts forbid it.
Learning both before you apply, at no cost
You don't need a paid course to learn either tool.
- Slack: Create a free workspace with a friend or study group. Practise channels, threads, huddles, status, reminders and searching. You can't use the free plan's huddle limit or 90-day history as an excuse in a real job, because employers usually pay, but the core skills are identical.
- Teams: If your university, NYSC programme, employer or a volunteer organisation uses Microsoft 365, you probably already have a Teams account. Use it to join meetings, share a screen, co-edit a Word file and check its channel files.
How to show it on your CV and in interviews
Listing "Slack, Microsoft Teams" under tools is fine, but it barely registers. Evidence of how you work in them is stronger. A line like "Coordinated a five-person volunteer team across Lagos and Abuja through Slack channels and weekly written updates" shows the habit, not just the software.
Example (hypothetical) interview answer to "How do you keep your manager informed when you're working different hours?":
I post a short written update in our team channel at the end of each day: what I closed, what's next and anything blocking me, tagging the person who can help. I set my status with my hours in WAT and my manager's local time, so nobody waits on me. If something's urgent and they're offline, I flag it in the thread and email as a backup.
For role-specific expectations, our customer support specialist career guide and virtual assistant career guide cover the wider toolkit, including help desks and calendars.
Scams that use Slack and Teams
Scammers know these tools look official. Typical patterns include "interviews" held entirely by text in a Slack-like chat or a Telegram group, a "Teams interview" from a personal email address, and "onboarding" that asks you to pay for equipment, software or training. A genuine employer may use Slack or Teams after you're hired, and many hold video interviews on Teams. They don't charge you to get the job, and their invitations come from a company domain you can match to the company's website.
Before you join any workspace or meeting, check the sender's email domain against the company's official site and the job ad. Our guide to spotting remote job scams in Nigeria covers the warning signs, and the planned guide on recognising fake remote job interviews covers interview-stage tricks specifically.
Frequently asked questions
Is Slack or Microsoft Teams better for remote work?
Neither is better overall. Slack suits teams that live in chat and connect many apps, and Teams suits organisations that work in Outlook, Word and Excel and hold many formal meetings. For a remote worker, the better tool is the one your employer uses, so be comfortable in both.
Can I use Slack on a Windows 10 laptop?
Yes, through a web browser. As of October 2026, Slack's desktop app requires Windows 11 version 23H2 or later, but Slack works in Chrome and Firefox, which also support huddles. Check Slack's minimum requirements page before you start a job, because supported versions change.
How much data does a Microsoft Teams meeting use?
It depends on video. By our calculation from Microsoft's published figures, an hour of audio at the recommended rate is about 52 MB in total. An hour of video at the recommended rate can approach 3 GB. Real usage varies, so turning your camera off when it isn't needed saves a lot of data.
Does the free Slack plan delete messages?
Yes. As of October 2026, the free plan shows only the last 90 days of messages and files, and content older than one year is permanently deleted. Keep important agreements in email or a shared document.
Should I put Slack and Microsoft Teams on my CV?
Yes, if you've used them, but show how you used them. A bullet describing written updates, async coordination or cross-time-zone teamwork tells an employer more than a bare tool list.
Do I need to pay for Slack or Teams as a remote employee?
No. An employer provides access to its own workspace or Microsoft 365 account. You'd only pay if you run your own team or agency. Anyone who asks you to pay for a Slack or Teams "licence" to start a job is very likely a scammer.
How do freelancers join a client's Slack or Teams?
They join as a guest. In Slack, clients on paid plans can add you as a single-channel or multi-channel guest, or connect through Slack Connect. In Teams, organisations invite guests by email or use shared channels with other Microsoft 365 organisations.
Is it rude to keep my camera off in Slack huddles or Teams meetings?
Usually not, for routine calls. Huddles are designed as quick, often audio-only conversations. Turn your camera on for interviews, first meetings, one-to-ones and anything your team treats as camera-on, and say briefly if you're audio-only because of your connection.
Key takeaways
- Your employer chooses the tool. Slack is common at start-ups and tech companies, and Teams at organisations built on Microsoft 365.
- Slack is stronger for fast chat and integrations. Teams is stronger for scheduled meetings and co-editing Office files.
- By our calculation from Microsoft's published Teams figures, an hour of video at the recommended rate can use close to 3 GB, while an hour of audio uses about 52 MB. Use video when it matters.
- Check device requirements early: Slack's desktop app needs Windows 11 23H2 or macOS 13, and its mobile app needs Android 11 or iOS 17 (as of October 2026).
- Threads, clear written updates, accurate time-zone status and keeping decisions outside chat matter more than knowing every feature.
Next steps
Set up a free Slack workspace this week and practise threads, huddles and a daily written update with a friend. If you have a Microsoft 365 account through school or work, do the same in Teams. Then browse remote jobs open to applicants in Nigeria and note which tools each ad mentions. After you search, you can save it with "Get email updates" to get a free daily digest of new matching jobs. For the rest of your toolkit, read our planned guides to project management software for remote teams and video conferencing tools for remote interviews.
