You find remote educational content writing jobs by searching for the right job titles (curriculum writer, assessment item writer, learning content developer) on edtech and publisher career pages, freelance marketplaces and remote job boards. Then you filter out the many ads that only accept US or Canadian residents. Teachers and subject specialists in Nigeria can get this work, but the open doors are usually contract roles, Africa-focused edtech companies, global e-learning projects and self-published resources. Salaried US school-curriculum jobs are harder to reach.

This guide explains the main types of educational writing work and the titles to search. It also shows how to read an ad's location rules, the samples that get you shortlisted, what the pay looks like, and how to avoid "academic writing" gigs that are really essay mills. Everything is written for someone applying from Nigeria, with naira conversions where they help.

Quick answer

Remote educational content writing means writing learning materials for pay, such as lessons, quiz questions, course scripts and study guides. To find it from Nigeria:

  • Search specific job titles on edtech career pages, Greenhouse and Lever boards, Upwork and remote job boards.
  • Skip ads that require US or Canadian residence.
  • Apply with two or three samples in your subject that are aligned to a named curriculum.

Expect contract or freelance work more often than salaried jobs.

What educational content writing actually covers

Educational content writing is writing designed to make someone learn something, not just read something. The reader is a student, a trainee or a teacher, and the writing is judged on whether it meets a learning objective.

That sets it apart from general content writing. A blog post for an edtech company's marketing team is content writing that happens to be about education. A lesson that teaches Year 9 students to balance chemical equations is educational content writing. Employers use both labels loosely, so read the duties, not just the title.

The main types of work

Type of workWhat you produceWho hires
Curriculum and lesson writingUnit plans, lessons, worksheets, teacher notesEdtech firms, publishers, school networks
Assessment item writingMultiple-choice and open questions, mark schemes, explanationsTest-prep firms, exam vendors, edtech
E-learning and course scriptingModule scripts, storyboards, quiz banksCorporate training firms, online academies
Study guides and explainersRevision notes, worked solutions, glossariesTutoring platforms, test-prep sites
Edtech marketing contentBlogs, emails, landing pages about learningEdtech marketing teams
Self-published resourcesPrintable worksheets and lesson packs you sellYou, via marketplaces

The first four are the core of educational writing. The fifth pays like general content work, and our content writer career guide covers it. The sixth is more like a small business than a job.

Where this overlaps with instructional design

Instructional designers plan whole learning experiences: the sequence, the activities, the assessment strategy and often the build in a learning platform. Educational writers usually produce the words inside that plan. Many writers grow into instructional design over time. If you want the bigger role, read our guide to becoming a remote instructional designer. For writing whole programmes for schools, see the curriculum developer career guide.

Job titles to search for

Searching "educational content writer" alone will miss most of the market. Employers use dozens of titles for the same work. Save this list and rotate through it:

  • Curriculum writer, curriculum developer, curriculum specialist
  • Content developer (education), learning content developer
  • Assessment item writer, item writer, question writer, assessment content developer
  • Instructional writer, e-learning writer, course writer
  • Subject matter expert (SME) writer, for example "maths SME" or "biology content expert"
  • Educational content editor, learning content editor
  • Lesson plan writer, worksheet writer, resource writer
  • Learning experience designer (often more senior and wider than writing)

Add your subject to the search. "Chemistry item writer" or "IGCSE maths content developer" returns fewer but far more relevant results than a generic phrase. Subject expertise is usually the thing employers are buying.

Where remote educational writing jobs are advertised

Edtech and publisher career pages

Most serious roles are posted first on the employer's own careers page. Many of those pages run on applicant tracking systems such as Greenhouse and Lever, which Google indexes well. Try searches like site:job-boards.greenhouse.io curriculum remote or site:jobs.lever.co "content developer" education, then open each ad and check the location section. Our planned guide on finding remote jobs on company career pages explains this method in detail.

Africa-focused edtech companies are worth a closer look because their learners and teams are often on the continent. For example, as of October 2026, ALX Africa had a Senior Learning Experience Designer role listed as remote on Greenhouse. The role covers curriculum design, team leadership and work with learning management systems. The ad does not list eligible countries. Instead, the application asks for your country of residence and whether you have the right to work there without sponsorship. That pattern is common, so always answer those questions honestly. This is a senior role, so treat it as an example of the kind of employer to watch, not an entry point.

Freelance marketplaces

Upwork, along with similar platforms, carries a steady flow of lesson-writing, quiz-writing and course-scripting projects, and many clients there hire internationally. Upwork's own fee calculator page says, as of October 2026, that the freelancer service fee varies between 0% and 15% of earnings, including bonuses. It applies to hourly, fixed-price and Project Catalog work. Factor that into your rates.

Search the marketplace with the same job titles listed above, and filter for clients with a payment history. Our planned piece on finding international content writing clients covers pitching and proposals.

Remote job boards

General remote boards and education-specific boards both list curriculum and item-writing roles. A lot of what they show is restricted to one country, so a board is a discovery tool, not a list of jobs you can take. On WorkRemote, listings in the writing category and the teaching category are remote roles open to applicants living in Nigeria. Each listing shows the company, its website and where applicants may live.

Selling your own resources

If you have taught for a few years, you can write and sell your own worksheets and lesson packs. Teachers Pay Teachers is the best-known marketplace for this. Its payout help page says, as of October 2026, that payouts go through Hyperwallet. Options include PayPal, direct deposit, Venmo and wire transfer, but which ones you see depends on your country, and international transfer fees vary by country. If you are in Nigeria, check during Hyperwallet setup which payout methods appear for you before you invest weeks in building a store. Income from this route is unpredictable and slow to build. It works best as a portfolio and side income, not a replacement salary.

Can you apply from Nigeria? Reading the location rules

Yes, for roles that accept applicants living in Nigeria. A large share of curriculum and assessment-writing ads, especially for US school content, require residence or work authorisation in the US or Canada. Before you write a cover letter, check four things in the ad:

  1. Where you must live. "Remote (US)", "must reside in the United States" or "Canada only" means a Nigeria-based applicant will be rejected, however good the samples.
  2. Hours. "Must work US Eastern hours" may be fine for a writer. Lagos is 5 hours ahead of New York in summer and 6 hours ahead in winter (US clocks go back on 1 November 2026), so 9am to 5pm Eastern is 3pm to 11pm in Lagos from November.
  3. Employment type. A contractor or freelance role is more often open internationally than a salaried employee role.
  4. Application questions. Questions about right to work in your country of residence are normal. Questions about US work authorisation signal a US-only role.
Ad wordingWhat it usually means for you
Remote, worldwide or anywhereOpen, but confirm on the application form
Remote, EMEA or AfricaUsually open to Nigeria; check the country list
Remote (US) or US residents onlyNot open from Nigeria
Freelance, contractor, globalOften open; you invoice and get paid as a contractor
Remote, no location statedUnclear; check the form or ask the recruiter

For more on these labels, see our planned explainers on what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria. If you are offered a contract and are unsure whether you are an employee or an independent contractor, read our guide to contractor versus employee arrangements in Nigeria.

Why so many curriculum jobs are US-only

Most K-12 (primary and secondary school) curriculum work in the US is written to state or national standards, such as Common Core for English and maths. Employers want writers who have taught to those standards in American classrooms. Payroll, tax and benefits rules also make it simpler for many US companies to hire only US residents. This is a hiring constraint, not a judgement on Nigerian writers. It does mean your time is better spent on roles that state wider eligibility.

What employers look for in an educational writer

Subject expertise you can prove

Employers mostly hire educational writers for what they know. A degree or teaching experience in the subject is the strongest signal. In Nigeria, a Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) registration, years spent teaching WAEC, NECO or Cambridge IGCSE classes, or examiner and marker experience all count. Put them near the top of your CV.

Curriculum and standards literacy

Good educational writing is tied to a framework. Know at least one well: the Nigerian national curriculum, the British National Curriculum, Cambridge IGCSE or A Level, the International Baccalaureate (IB) or Common Core. Show that you can write a clear learning objective, pitch content at the right reading level and match questions to a level of thinking. Bloom's taxonomy is the framework most employers mention for that last skill.

Assessment writing discipline

Item writing has its own craft:

  • Write stems that test one idea.
  • Write distractors (wrong options) that reflect real student mistakes.
  • Avoid clues that give the answer away.
  • Write explanations that teach.

If you have set exam papers for a school, describe that work specifically.

Following a style guide

Publishers and edtech firms send long style guides covering spelling (US or UK), formatting, inclusive language, accessibility and tone. Applicants who follow them exactly in the test task tend to stand out. Applicants who ignore them rarely get a second project.

Clean, original writing

Plagiarism checks are routine. Many employers also set rules on AI tools. Some ban them, while others allow them for drafting but require human review. Ask, and follow the rule.

Building samples that get you shortlisted

Most applications ask for writing samples, and many include a paid or unpaid test task. Generic blog posts won't help much here. Build samples that look like the work.

A strong set is two or three pieces in your subject, each labelled with the curriculum, level and learning objective:

  • One lesson or unit outline
  • One set of 8 to 10 assessment items with answer explanations
  • One student-facing explainer or study guide

Example (hypothetical): A chemistry teacher in Ibadan builds a sample pack labelled "Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry, Topic: Rates of reaction, Age 14 to 16". It contains:

  • A 45-minute lesson plan with objectives, a starter, a practical activity and an exit ticket
  • Ten multiple-choice questions, each with a distractor rationale
  • A one-page revision sheet written at a reading level suitable for the age group

She saves it as a single PDF and a Google Docs link, and sends it with every application.

Write original samples, not copies of past papers or textbook pages. If you wrote materials for a school employer, check that you are allowed to share them, or remove identifying details. Our planned guides on building a professional writing portfolio and creating writing samples without paid clients go further.

A short application message that works

Example (hypothetical), for a freelance item-writing project:

"Hello, I'm a secondary school mathematics teacher with six years of teaching WAEC and IGCSE classes, and I've set termly exam papers for my department. I've attached ten algebra items with distractor rationales, written to your stated grade level and US spelling. I can deliver 40 items a week and work to your style guide. I'm based in Nigeria and available for contract work."

The message is short, names the subject, proves it with a matched sample and states location and contract status up front.

How much educational content writing pays

Pay varies widely, and there is no reliable published figure for Nigeria-based educational writers. Use US data as a ceiling, not an expectation.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that instructional coordinators, who develop curricula and review teaching materials, earned a median of $77,440 a year in May 2025. That is about ₦105,473,000 at ₦1,362 to $1 (CBN NFEM weighted average, 23 October 2026). The same page says the typical entry route is a master's degree plus years of teaching experience. That figure describes US employees in a related, more senior occupation. It is not what a contractor in Nigeria will be offered. Remote pay for Nigeria-based workers is usually below US local pay.

What tends to move your rate:

  • Pay basis. Item and lesson writing is often paid per item, per lesson or per project rather than hourly.
  • Subject scarcity. Advanced maths, sciences, computing and specialist professional training tend to pay better than general primary content.
  • Credentials. Teaching licences, examiner experience and postgraduate degrees support higher rates.
  • Client type. Established publishers and funded edtech companies usually pay more than individual clients on marketplaces.

Example (hypothetical): You agree a $500 fixed-price project on Upwork to write 50 quiz questions. On a 10% service fee, you receive $450. At ₦1,362 to $1, that is about ₦612,900 before transfer charges and tax. Run the same sum on every offer so you know your real per-hour rate.

For getting dollar payments into a Nigerian account, see how to receive dollars in Nigeria. For tax on this income, read our guide to tax for remote workers in Nigeria.

A step-by-step plan to land your first project

  1. Pick a lane. Choose one subject and one or two curricula you know well. Being a specialist gets more replies than "I can write about any subject".
  2. Build your sample pack. Make the three pieces described above, labelled with curriculum, level and objective.
  3. Update your CV and LinkedIn. Lead with teaching or subject credentials, then writing work. Use the job titles employers search for in your headline, such as "Mathematics curriculum writer and assessment item writer".
  4. Set up searches. Save searches for your subject plus three or four job titles on Greenhouse and Lever via Google, on Upwork and on remote job boards.
  5. Filter hard on location. Drop US-only and Canada-only ads straight away. Keep worldwide, EMEA, Africa and contractor roles.
  6. Apply with matched samples. Send the sample closest to the ad, and follow any instructions on format or file type exactly.
  7. Treat the test task as the interview. Read the brief twice, follow the style guide, hit the word or item count and submit early.
  8. Track and follow up. Log every application, then follow up once after a week or two if there is a named contact.

Expect a slow start. Many writers win their first education projects through smaller freelance jobs, then use those as references for larger contracts.

Working from Nigeria: practical points

Most educational writing is asynchronous: you get a brief, write, submit and revise. That suits writers in Nigeria, because the time difference with the US matters less than in live roles such as tutoring. Editorial calls and onboarding sessions may still fall in US hours. With US Eastern 6 hours behind Lagos from 1 November 2026, a 10am Eastern call is at 4pm in Lagos.

Deadlines in this work are firm, because content often feeds a release date or a school term. Plan for power and internet failures:

  • An inverter or solar backup for your laptop and router
  • Two internet options, such as a MiFi plus a phone hotspot
  • Drafts saved in cloud documents so a dead laptop does not cost you a deadline

Many clients share work in Google Docs or Microsoft Word with tracked changes. Get comfortable with comments, suggestion mode and version history.

Scams and work you should refuse

Three patterns catch educational writers in Nigeria often.

Essay mills disguised as "academic writing" jobs. Ads on WhatsApp, Telegram and some freelance sites offer steady pay for "academic writing". What they mean is writing essays, dissertations or exam answers that students submit as their own. That is contract cheating, it breaches university rules in most countries and it is illegal in some. It is not educational content writing. Real educational writing produces materials that teach, under the employer's or publisher's name. Academic editing, done properly, is a different and legitimate service, which our planned guide on remote academic editing jobs explains.

Upfront fees. Some "recruiters" ask you to pay for a curriculum-writing certificate, a training pack or a registration fee before you can get projects. Legitimate employers do not charge you to apply or to start work.

Endless unpaid test tasks. A short test is normal. If a "client" asks for a full unit or 50 questions as a free test, they may be collecting free content. Offer a smaller sample or ask for the test to be paid.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nigerians get remote curriculum writing jobs?

Yes, but mainly with employers whose ads accept applicants in Nigeria, Africa, EMEA or worldwide, or through freelance contracts. Many US school-curriculum roles require US residence, so check the location section and the application form before you apply.

Do I need to be a teacher to become an educational content writer?

Not always, but it helps a lot. Employers want proof that you know the subject and how students learn it. Teaching experience, a relevant degree, examiner work or professional expertise for corporate training content all serve that purpose. Without them, start with study guides and explainers in a subject you know well.

What is an assessment item writer?

An assessment item writer creates test questions, answer options, mark schemes and answer explanations to a set specification. The work is often paid per item. It rewards precision, subject knowledge and careful use of the employer's style guide.

Which curriculum should I learn as a Nigerian educational writer?

Start with the one you have taught, whether that's the Nigerian curriculum for WAEC and NECO classes or Cambridge IGCSE. Then learn a second one that international employers use, such as the British National Curriculum, Cambridge or IB. Learn Common Core if you're targeting US content.

Is academic writing on WhatsApp or Telegram the same as educational content writing?

No. Most "academic writing" work offered on those channels is writing assignments for students to submit as their own, which is contract cheating. Educational content writing produces teaching materials published by an employer or under your own name.

How do I get paid by international clients from Nigeria?

Most clients pay through a platform such as Upwork, through an employer-of-record or contractor-payment service, or by bank transfer to a dollar account. Our guide to receiving dollar payments in Nigeria compares the options and their fees.

Can I sell worksheets on Teachers Pay Teachers from Nigeria?

Possibly. Teachers Pay Teachers pays sellers through Hyperwallet, and the payout methods available depend on your country, as of October 2026. Check which options Hyperwallet shows for Nigeria before you build a large store.

Is educational content writing the same as creating online courses?

No. An educational writer usually writes to someone else's brief and gets paid per project or salary. A course creator builds and sells their own course and takes on the marketing. See our planned guide on online course creator jobs if you want that route.

Key takeaways

  • Educational content writing means writing materials that teach, such as lessons, assessment items, course scripts and study guides. Edtech marketing content is a related but different job.
  • Search specific titles like curriculum writer, item writer and learning content developer, with your subject added.
  • Many curriculum and assessment-writing ads are limited to US or Canadian residents. Focus on worldwide, EMEA, Africa and contractor roles.
  • Two or three samples labelled with curriculum, level and learning objective will do more for you than a general writing portfolio.
  • US pay figures, such as the BLS median of $77,440 for instructional coordinators (May 2025), are ceilings for a related US occupation, not offers for Nigeria-based writers.
  • Refuse essay-mill "academic writing" work and any request for upfront fees.

Next steps
