Financial analyst and FP&A interview questions for remote jobs

FP&A interviews mix technical questions you can prepare for, like how depreciation flows through the statements, with judgement questions about forecasts and difficult budget holders. Most remote employers add a timed modelling test. Here are the questions you should be ready for.

About the role and your experience

Openers that check you understand the job and have done the work.

  1. Why FP&A and not accounting or investment banking?

    Why they ask

    Motivation and realistic expectations.

    How to answer

    Be honest and specific.

    Show a sample answer

I trained in audit, so I know how the numbers are built. What I enjoy more is using them to decide what happens next. FP&A puts me in those conversations, and it's a role I can do properly from Lagos.

Technical questions

What you know and how you'd do the work, often with a live task or test.

  1. If depreciation goes up by $10, walk me through the three statements.

    Why they ask

The classic test of whether you understand how the statements link.

    How to answer

Go statement by statement, including tax.

    Show a sample answer

Assuming a 30% tax rate, operating profit falls by $10 and net income by $7. On the cash flow statement, net income is down $7 but you add back the $10 depreciation, so cash from operations is up $3 because of the tax saving. On the balance sheet, fixed assets are down $10, cash is up $3 and retained earnings are down $7, so it balances.

  2. What is the difference between a budget and a forecast?

    Why they ask

    Basic but often answered badly.

    How to answer

    Explain purpose and timing.

    Show a sample answer

The budget is the plan agreed before the year starts, and it usually stays fixed so we can measure against it. The forecast is our latest best estimate of the year, updated monthly or quarterly as actuals come in.

  3. How would you build a revenue forecast for a subscription software company?

    Why they ask

Remote FP&A roles are often at SaaS companies.

    How to answer

Use drivers: starting customers or ARR, new sales, expansion, churn, pricing.

    Show a sample answer

Start with opening ARR, add new bookings by month from the sales pipeline and conversion rates, add expansion from existing customers, and subtract churn based on recent cohorts. Then convert ARR to recognised revenue monthly. Each driver sits in an assumptions tab so the CFO can change it.

  4. Explain churn, CAC and payback period.

    Why they ask

Startup investors and boards watch these.

    How to answer

Define each simply and how they connect.

    Show a sample answer

Churn is the share of customers or revenue lost in a period. CAC is what it costs in sales and marketing to win one new customer. Payback is how many months of gross margin from that customer it takes to earn back the CAC. If CAC is $1,200 and a customer brings $100 a month of gross margin, payback is 12 months.

  5. Which Excel functions do you rely on most for modelling, and why?

    Why they ask

A quick filter before the modelling test.

    How to answer

Name practical functions and good habits.

    Show a sample answer

SUMIFS for pulling actuals by department and month, XLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH for mapping accounts, and IFERROR sparingly. I avoid hard-coding inside formulas, keep inputs in one colour, and add a check row that turns red if the balance sheet doesn't balance.

  6. Write a SQL query to get total revenue by month for 2026 from an invoices table.

    Why they ask

Tech-company FP&A teams want analysts who pull their own data.

    How to answer

Write a simple, correct query and mention date handling.

    Show a sample answer

SELECT DATE_TRUNC('month', invoice_date) AS month, SUM(amount) AS revenue FROM invoices WHERE invoice_date >= '2026-01-01' AND invoice_date < '2027-01-01' GROUP BY 1 ORDER BY 1. I'd check with finance whether we want invoiced or recognised revenue, because they're different.

  7. How do you make sure a model is right before you send it?

    Why they ask

Errors in models are common and costly.

    How to answer

Mention checks, reconciling to actuals and a second look.

    Show a sample answer

Balance and cash checks on every period, reconciliation of the actual months to the ledger, a sense-check of growth rates against history, and I trace a few numbers from input to output. For anything going to the board, I ask a colleague to break it.

Behavioural questions

Past situations. Answer with a real example: what happened, what you did, what changed.

  1. A department head says your forecast is wrong and refuses to accept it. What do you do?

    Why they ask

    Budget holders push back constantly.

    How to answer

Listen, find the disputed assumption, test it with data, and document the agreed outcome.

    Show a sample answer

I'd ask which number they think is wrong and why. Usually it's one assumption, like hiring dates. If they have better information, I change it and note who gave it. If not, I show the data behind mine. Either way, the assumption and its owner go in the model notes.

  2. Tell me about a model you built that changed a decision.

    Why they ask

They want impact, not just activity.

    How to answer

Describe the question, the model, the answer and what happened.

    Show a sample answer

At a Lagos fintech I built a model of the cost to serve each customer segment. It showed small merchants were losing us about ₦1,800 a month each because of support costs. Management introduced a minimum monthly fee, and that segment broke even within two quarters.

Situational questions

Hypotheticals about problems you'd meet in the job.

  1. Marketing spent 20% over budget last month. How would you investigate and report it?

    Why they ask

Variance analysis is the core of the role.

    How to answer

Break it down, talk to the owner, separate timing from permanent, and say what it means for the forecast.

    Show a sample answer

I'd split it by vendor and campaign in the ledger, then ask the marketing lead what drove it. If it's a conference paid early, it's timing and the forecast doesn't change. If they've increased paid ads, I'd ask about the expected return and update the full-year forecast, then flag it to the CFO with the cash impact.

  2. How would you present a forecast that shows the company running out of cash in nine months?

    Why they ask

Delivering bad news clearly is part of the job.

    How to answer

Lead with the answer, show the drivers and give options.

    Show a sample answer

First line: at current burn we run out of cash in nine months, in July. Then the three biggest drivers of burn, and two or three options with their effect, such as delaying hires or a price change. I'd share it with the CFO privately before any wider meeting.

  3. What do you do when the data you need is messy or missing?

    Why they ask

Real company data is always messy.

    How to answer

Explain how you clean, estimate transparently and fix the source.

    Show a sample answer

I clean what I can and label any estimates clearly in the model. Then I tell the data owner what's wrong so it gets fixed at source, because next month I'll need it again.

Remote work questions

How you'll work from Nigeria with a team elsewhere: hours, power, internet, communication.

  1. Our CFO is in San Francisco. How would you work with them from Lagos?

    Why they ask

Eight or nine hours' difference is hard.

    How to answer

Show you understand the overlap and how you would use it.

    Show a sample answer

Our overlap is roughly my 5pm to 8pm. I'd do the analysis in my morning, send a short written summary before they start, and keep the live call for decisions. On board-pack weeks I'd plan to stay later.

  2. What is your setup for long modelling days and live reviews?

    Why they ask

    Remote employers check practicalities.

    How to answer

    Specific power, internet and equipment.

    Show a sample answer

A laptop with 16GB of RAM so large models don't crash, two monitors, solar backup that covers a full day, fibre plus a 4G backup. I save models to the shared drive every hour so nothing is lost if power goes.

Remote interview tips

Build and rehearse a three-minute walkthrough of your portfolio model. Many remote interviews start with "show me something you built".

Practise a timed test: give yourself 90 minutes to build a simple three-statement model from a one-page case. Speed and structure matter more than complexity.

Prepare one variance story and one model story with numbers. Remote interviewers cannot see your past work environment, so concrete examples carry more weight.

Questions people ask

Do FP&A interviews include a modelling test?

Usually. Expect a timed Excel or Sheets case, sometimes take-home over 24 to 48 hours. Keep inputs separate, add checks and write a short summary of your conclusions.

Will they ask valuation questions in an FP&A interview?

Sometimes, but less than in investment roles. Know how a DCF works at a basic level; spend most of your preparation on forecasting and variance analysis.

How should I explain Nigerian experience to a foreign interviewer?

Use their terms. Say "I owned the monthly forecast for a $40 million revenue business" rather than local job titles, and convert key figures to dollars.
