Remote Jobs With Swedish Companies That Hire Internationally: What Nigerians Can Really Apply For
Which Swedish companies hire internationally, what "Sweden (Remote)" means, and the realistic routes for Nigerians, with examples checked in October 2026.

Some Swedish companies do hire internationally, but fully remote roles open to someone living in Nigeria are rare. Most Swedish employers hire remotely only in countries where they already have an office or a legal entity, and many "remote" Swedish roles are hybrid jobs tied to Stockholm, Malmö or Gothenburg.
That doesn't mean you should give up on Sweden. It means you need to know where the real openings are. In this guide we look at Swedish employers we checked in October 2026, explain what their job ads mean for a Nigerian applicant, and show you how to find the roles that genuinely accept Nigeria-based candidates. We also cover work permits, time zones, pay and the scams that use Sweden's good reputation as bait.
Everything here describes what employers' own pages showed as of October 2026. Openings change weekly, so always check the live ad before you apply.
Quick answer
Swedish companies that hire internationally usually do it within Europe or in countries where they have offices, so few of their remote jobs accept applicants in Nigeria. Your realistic routes are: roles labelled worldwide or EMEA that name Africa or Nigeria, contractor roles with Swedish startups, and local jobs at Swedish multinationals with Nigerian offices, such as Ericsson. You don't need a Swedish work permit if you work from Nigeria.
How Swedish companies usually hire remote workers
Sweden has a strong flexible-work culture, but that culture mostly applies to people who already live in Sweden or elsewhere in the EU. A Swedish tech company that lets staff work from home three days a week isn't necessarily set up to pay someone in Ibadan.
When we looked at Swedish employers' careers pages in October 2026, three patterns kept coming up.
Hybrid hubs, not "work from anywhere"
Many Swedish companies hire around a few city hubs and call the arrangement "hybrid". Teamtailor is a recruitment software company whose own careers page lists most roles in Stockholm. In October 2026, all 14 openings on Teamtailor's careers page were based in Stockholm, London, Toronto, Chicago, Berlin or Singapore. Several were marked hybrid and none was tagged fully remote, even though the page offers a "Fully Remote" filter.
That's typical. A Swedish employer can be very modern about remote work and still need you within commuting distance of an office.
Remote hiring follows legal entities
Companies hiring employees abroad either open a local entity or use an employer of record (EOR), a third-party firm that legally employs you on the company's behalf. Swedish companies tend to hire where they already have an entity. Neo4j's careers page, for example, lists offices in Malmö and Stockholm, plus the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Singapore and Australia. It listed no African location as of October 2026.
If a Swedish company has no entity in Nigeria and doesn't use an EOR or a contractor platform, it usually can't hire you as an employee, however strong your CV is. Our guide on contractor and EOR employee arrangements explains how each option works for someone in Nigeria.
Large Swedish multinationals hire in Nigeria, but on-site
Some well-known Swedish groups run local Nigerian subsidiaries. Those jobs are real, but they're usually office or field roles, not remote ones. We cover this route in its own section below because many readers miss it.
Swedish employers we checked (October 2026)
We list only companies whose own careers page or job ad we opened. This is not a ranking. Each one shows a different situation you'll meet when you look at Swedish employers.
| Employer | What the page showed | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Teamtailor | City-based roles, several marked hybrid, none fully remote | Not open to Nigeria-based remote applicants right now |
| Neo4j | Offices in Malmö, Stockholm and six other cities, no African office | Remote roles likely tied to those countries |
| Ericsson Nigeria | Lagos graduate role with office work, posted July 2026, now closed | Real local route, on-site |
Teamtailor
Teamtailor matters for a second reason: many Swedish employers use its software to host their careers pages. Their careers sites often sit on addresses ending in "teamtailor.com" and use the same labels, such as "Hybrid", "Fully Remote" and "On-site". Learn to read those tags once and you can scan dozens of Swedish job boards quickly.
Neo4j
Neo4j is a graph database company with offices in Malmö and Stockholm. Its careers page says staff work from its offices, from co-working spaces and from home. Read that as remote work around its existing locations, not open hiring worldwide. When we checked in October 2026, the job list didn't load in a form we could read, so open the live page and check each role's location yourself.
Ericsson Nigeria
Ericsson, the Swedish telecoms equipment group, operates in Nigeria as Ericsson Nigeria. A Business Operations Graduate role in Lagos was posted on 21 July 2026. It asked for a recent degree in business, HR, economics, logistics or a related field, and it mentioned regular office collaboration. The listing was closed when we checked in October 2026, but it shows how this route works: local hiring through the Nigerian subsidiary. Search the job ID on Ericsson's official careers site, not only on reposting sites.
What Swedish remote job labels mean for a Nigerian applicant
The location line in a Swedish ad tells you more than the job title does. Here is how to read the common versions.
| Label in the ad | Usually means | Can you apply from Nigeria? |
|---|---|---|
| Stockholm, Hybrid | Office days each week in Stockholm | No, unless relocating |
| Sweden (Remote) | Work from anywhere inside Sweden | No |
| Nordics or EU remote | Must live in those countries | No |
| EMEA remote | Europe, Middle East and Africa, often with exceptions | Only if Nigeria isn't excluded |
| Worldwide or Anywhere | Any country the company can pay | Often yes, check the details |
The "Sweden (Remote)" label is the one that catches people out. It means remote within Sweden. One remote-first company's Greenhouse job board shows the format well: in October 2026 its roles were labelled "United States (Remote)", "Germany (Remote)", "Sweden (Remote)", "India (Remote)" and so on. No African country appeared. Each label names the country you must live in.
Aggregators can mislead you in the same way. The first page of Remotive's Sweden remote jobs filter in October 2026 was almost entirely roles restricted to people in Sweden, such as payroll, sales and engineering posts with "Sweden" as the only allowed location. "Remote jobs in Sweden" usually means remote for Swedes.
For the wider meaning of these terms, see our explainers on what EMEA means in a remote job ad and what "worldwide remote" means from Nigeria.
Where Nigerians have a realistic chance
We could not verify a Swedish company with a live remote role that names Nigeria as an eligible location in October 2026. Be wary of any article that gives you a long list of "Swedish companies hiring Nigerians" without linking each one to a current ad. These are the routes that make sense instead.
Swedish startups hiring contractors
Young Swedish software, gaming, fintech and AI startups sometimes hire developers, designers, writers or support staff as independent contractors, because contracting needs no local entity. You invoice them, often through a platform such as Deel or Remote, and you handle your own tax in Nigeria. These roles appear on job boards with "Worldwide", "Anywhere" or "Remote (contractor)" in the location line. They also come through personal networks and LinkedIn far more often than through formal careers pages.
The trade-off is that contractors usually get no paid leave, pension or notice protection. Read the contract before you sign.
Africa-facing roles at Swedish consumer tech firms
Swedish companies with large user bases in African markets sometimes advertise partnership, growth or country manager roles covering Nigeria or sub-Saharan Africa. These roles are rare and usually need several years of relevant experience. They're worth a saved search if you work in partnerships, telecoms, marketing or business development.
Local jobs at Swedish multinationals in Nigeria
Ericsson Nigeria is the clearest verified example. Jobs at a Swedish group's Nigerian subsidiary come with a Nigerian contract, are paid in naira, and give you the chance to work with Swedish colleagues and processes. They're not remote, but they're a sensible stepping stone. Internal moves into regional or global teams are easier once you're inside the company.
EMEA roles that don't exclude Africa
Some Swedish employers with EOR arrangements hire across EMEA. Read the full ad: some list approved countries, and others say "EMEA (excluding certain countries)". If Nigeria or "Africa" appears in the list, or the ad says it hires anywhere in EMEA, apply. If it's unclear, a short email to the recruiter asking whether the company can hire someone based in Nigeria saves you hours. Our guide on checking whether a remote job accepts Nigerian residents has wording you can use.
Do you need a Swedish work permit to work remotely from Nigeria?
No, not if you live and work in Nigeria. A Swedish work permit is for people who will work in Sweden. If you stay in Nigeria and your employer pays you through an EOR, a contractor platform or a Nigerian subsidiary, you aren't working in Sweden.
You'll only need a permit if a Swedish company asks you to relocate. As of October 2026, the Swedish Migration Agency's guidance on working in Sweden says new work permit rules took effect on 1 June 2026. These include a salary requirement of at least SEK 34,470 a month (90% of the median salary, which was updated to SEK 38,300 on 16 June 2026) and a comprehensive health insurance requirement. Check the agency's site for the latest figures before you make any plans.
If you want to live abroad while keeping a remote job, that's a digital nomad visa question, not a work permit one. Our digital nomad visa guides cover the countries that offer them. For the general rules on remote work and visas, see whether you need a visa to work remotely for a foreign company.
Working hours: Sweden and Lagos are close
Time zones are one of the best things about Swedish employers. Sweden uses Central European Time. Lagos (WAT, UTC+1, no daylight saving) is on the same time as Stockholm in winter and one hour behind in summer.
So a 9am to 5pm Stockholm day is 9am to 5pm in Lagos in winter and 8am to 4pm in summer. Compare that with a US West Coast employer, where you might be online until 2am. In interviews, point out that you can join every stand-up and meeting live. A US-based candidate can't offer that to a Swedish team.
The flip side: your working day lines up with Nigeria's busiest grid and network hours, so you can't schedule your important calls for quiet night-time connectivity. Treat backup power (an inverter, solar, or a generator) and two internet connections (two ISPs, or a MiFi plus a phone hotspot) as basic job requirements.
Pay and getting paid by a Swedish company
Swedish salaries are set in Swedish kronor (SEK). The Migration Agency's median of SEK 38,300 a month (June 2026) describes pay for people working in Sweden. Don't expect a Nigeria-based remote worker to be offered that figure. Remote pay for people in Nigeria is usually lower than local Swedish pay, and contractors' rates vary widely by skill and company.
How you get paid depends on the arrangement:
- Contractor: you invoice in SEK, euros or dollars and receive the money through a platform or payment account.
- EOR employee: the EOR runs payroll and pays you, sometimes into a Nigerian bank account or domiciliary account.
- Nigerian subsidiary: you're paid in naira through normal Nigerian payroll.
If a Swedish client pays in euros or kronor, check whether your payment app accepts that currency before you agree terms, and compare the conversion fees. Our guide to receiving foreign payments in Nigeria compares the apps, and our guide to tax for remote workers in Nigeria explains your obligations under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
How to find Swedish remote jobs open to Nigerians
Use this routine instead of scrolling through "remote jobs in Sweden" lists.
- List Swedish companies in your field. Developers can look at Swedish software, gaming and fintech firms. Marketers and support staff can look at Swedish consumer apps with international users.
- Open each careers page directly. Many run on Teamtailor or Greenhouse. Filter by "Fully Remote" or "Remote" first, then read the location line of each ad.
- Discard country-locked roles. Skip anything marked "Sweden (Remote)", "Hybrid", "Nordics" or "EU only".
- Shortlist EMEA and worldwide roles. Read the full ad for excluded countries or a list of hiring countries.
- Ask when it's unclear. Send one short, polite message asking whether the company can hire or contract someone based in Nigeria.
- Add Ericsson and other multinationals with Nigerian offices to a separate list for local, on-site roles.
- Save searches on boards that show where applicants may live, so new matches reach you without daily scrolling.
Example (hypothetical): Amaka, a Lagos-based React developer, picks ten Stockholm software startups. Three have no remote roles, four list only "Sweden (Remote)" or hybrid posts, two advertise EMEA roles that exclude non-EU countries, and one posts a "Worldwide, contractor" frontend role. She applies to that one, mentions in her cover note that she works Stockholm hours live, and sets a saved search for the other nine.

Mistakes and scams to avoid
Sweden's good reputation makes it a favourite theme for fake recruiters. Watch for these:
- "Swedish company, remote job, visa included" offers on WhatsApp or Telegram. Real Swedish employers recruit through their careers pages, LinkedIn and established job boards.
- Requests for a "processing", "permit" or "equipment" fee. Legitimate employers don't charge you to be hired. Swedish work permit applications go through the Migration Agency, not through a recruiter's personal account.
- Applying to "Sweden (Remote)" roles and hoping. It wastes your time and can mark you as careless in the company's applicant system.
- Taking an aggregator's word for it. Always open the original ad on the employer's own site and check the location line yourself.
- Signing a contractor agreement without reading the payment and termination terms. Check the currency, the payment date and the notice period.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Nigerian work remotely for a Swedish company?
Yes, if the company can hire or contract someone living in Nigeria. Many Swedish employers only hire in countries where they have an entity, so check each ad's location line. Contractor roles and roles labelled worldwide are the most likely to be open.
Do Swedish companies hire Nigerians without relocation?
Some do, mostly as contractors or through an employer of record, but such roles are uncommon. Swedish multinationals such as Ericsson also hire locally through their Nigerian subsidiaries, though those jobs are usually on-site.
What does "Sweden (Remote)" mean in a job ad?
It means you can work remotely, but you must live in Sweden. It does not mean the job is open to applicants abroad. Look for "Worldwide", "Anywhere" or an EMEA list that includes Nigeria instead.
Do I need a Swedish work permit for a remote job I do from Nigeria?
No. A Swedish work permit covers work carried out in Sweden. You'd need one only if you moved there. As of October 2026, permits require a salary of at least SEK 34,470 a month, according to the Swedish Migration Agency.
What time zone do Swedish companies work in compared with Nigeria?
Sweden uses Central European Time. Lagos is on the same time as Stockholm in winter and one hour behind in summer, so you can work normal Swedish office hours without night shifts.
Will a Swedish company pay me in dollars?
Not always. Swedish salaries are usually set in kronor, and contractor rates may be in kronor, euros or dollars. Agree the currency in writing and check that your payment account can receive it.
Are Swedish remote jobs on Telegram or WhatsApp real?
Treat them with deep suspicion, especially if they promise a visa or ask for any fee. Confirm the job exists on the company's official careers page before you share documents or money.
Key takeaways
- Swedish companies do hire internationally, but mostly within Europe or in countries where they have an entity, so Nigeria-eligible remote roles are rare.
- "Sweden (Remote)", "Hybrid" and "Nordics" labels mean you must live in those places.
- Your best routes are contractor roles, worldwide or EMEA roles that include Nigeria, and on-site jobs at Swedish multinationals' Nigerian offices, such as Ericsson Nigeria.
- You don't need a Swedish work permit to work from Nigeria. Permits apply only if you relocate.
- Swedish hours match Lagos closely, which is a real selling point in interviews.
- Verify every opportunity on the employer's own site, and never pay to be hired.
